Dopo avervi parlato delle migliori spiagge e delle città più affascinanti dell'isola, è il momento di entrare ancor di più nel vivo di quel gioiellino chiamato Minorca. Come? nel modo più semplice possibile, ovvero raccontandovi quelle che secondo noi sono le "5 cose da fare" sull'isola di Minorca. E vi assicuriamo che non è stato affatto semplice sceglierne solamente cinque, tante sono le attività ed i luoghi imperdibili che compongono i quasi 700 km quadrati dell'isola spagnola, dando ampio spazio anche al cibo ed alle specialità minorchine...
After telling you about the best beaches and most charming towns on the island, is it time to get even more into the heart of that little gem called Menorca. How? In the simplest way, by telling you what are for us the "5 things to do" on the island of Menorca. And we assure you that it was not easy at all to choose only five of them, because there are many activities and unmissable places that make up the almost 700 square kilometers of the Spanish island. Well, we've also reseved some space for the food and specialties of Menorca...
1) PARC NATURAL S'ALBUFEIRA DES GRAU
In vetta non poteva che esserci il Parco Naturale S'Albufeira des Grau, il principale motivo per cui Minorca è Riserva Mondiale della Biosfera. Dove siamo? Ad una ventina di minuti da nord di Mahon, la capitale, all'interno di un'area di 2000 ettari che è da sempre uno dei paradisi per gli amanti del birdwatching. Ma S'Albufeira des Grau è molto di più. Qui troverete sentieri naturalistici, spiagge (soprattutto quella di Es Grau), piccole comunità, scogliere, lagune ed isolotti. Oltre ovviamente alle tantissime specie di uccelli.
1) PARC NATURAL S'ALBUFEIRA DES GRAU
At the top there could only be S'Albufeira des Grau Natural Park, the main reason why Menorca is a World Biosphere Reserve. Where are we? About 20 minutes north of Mahon, the capital, within a 2,000-hectare area that has always been a haven for birdwatchers. But S'Albufeira des Grau is much more than that. Here you will find nature trails, beaches (especially that of Es Grau), small communities, cliffs, lagoons and islets. As well, of course, as the many species of birds.
COME VISITARE IL PARCO ED I MIGLIORI TRAILS
Solitamente la base di partenza per la visita del parco è la laguna, punto di osservazione della fauna ornitologica nell'isola, ma anche la storia qui ha il suo peso, grazie all'antico nucleo urbano di Sa Torreta de Tramuntana. Ma chi visita il parco non vorrà farsi mancare qualche piccola escursione a piedi ed è proprio qui che vogliamo concentrarci, ovvero sui tre migliori sentieri escursionistici. Già, perchè pur essendo un parco naturale molto famoso, non è così semplice la ricerca delle informazioni su internet.
HOW TO VISIT THE PARK AND THE BEST TRAILS
Usually the starting point for visiting the park is the lagoon, a vantage point for birdlife on the island, but history also plays a role here, thanks to the ancient urban center of Sa Torreta de Tramuntana. But those visiting the park will not want to miss out some short hikes. That's why we would like to talk about the three best hiking trails in Menorca, because despite being a very famous natural park, it is not so easy to search for information on the Internet.
I tre sentieri più famosi sono dislocati in tre differenti aree del parco, motivo per il quale ci siamo recati al visitor center (Centre d'Interpretació Rodríguez Femenias: Urbanizacion Llimpa) prima di avventurarci nella vegetazione di S'Albufeira des Grau. Spulciando su internet, avevamo notato che due dei tre sentieri prendevano il via proprio a ridosso del visitor center, mentre per il terzo sarebbe stato necessario recarsi nel piccolo paese di Es Grau, proprio vicino alla laguna. Convinti che i migliori sentieri fossero i primi due, abbiamo chiesto al ranger un consiglio, ma la sua risposta è stata decisamente eloquente. "Se amate il birdwatching vi consiglio i primi due, altrimenti recatevi ad Es Graus e percorrete il percorso Sa Gola".
The three most famous trails are located in three different areas of the park, which is why we went to the visitor center (Centre d'Interpretació Rodríguez Femenias: Urbanizacion Llimpa) before venturing into the vegetation of S'Albufeira des Grau. Looking through the Internet, we had noticed that two of the three trails starts right next to the visitor center, while the third would require going to the small village of Es Grau, right next to the lagoon. We thought that the best trails were the first two, we asked the ranger for advice, but her answer was decidedly eloquent. "If you love birdwatching I recommend the first two, otherwise go to Es Graus and walk the Sa Gola trail".
Ed è proprio quello che abbiamo fatto. Abbiamo lasciato l'auto nel parcheggio davanti alla laguna (quello del Bar Es Grau: Plaça de Mestre Jaume) ed abbiamo percorso in senso antiorario il sentiero di 2.2 km (un loop trail) davvero molto carino. Dovrete seguire la strada principale (Carrer S'Arribada) per circa 300 metri, poi una svolta a destra vi consentirà di entrare nel sentiero vero e proprio. La prima parte è quella più affascinante, con una passerella che vi permetterà di superare le piccole lagune ed il canale Sa Gola. Le viste che vi troverete di fronte saranno davvero affascinanti.
And that is exactly what we did. We left the car in the parking lot in front of the lagoon (the one at Bar Es Grau: Plaça de Mestre Jaume) and hiked counterclockwise the 2.2 km trail (a loop trail) that is really very nice. You will have to follow the main road (Carrer S'Arribada) for about 300 meters, then a right turn will allows to enter the trail proper. The first part is the most fascinating one, with a footbridge that crosses the small lagoons and the Sa Gola canal. The views in front of you will be truly fascinating.
La parte conclusiva del percorso, decisamente semplice e ben segnalato (impiegherete circa 40 minuti per percorrerlo), si svolgerà sulla spiaggia, finissima e poco affollata, sino a raggiungere il bar dove avrete lasciato la vostra vettura. E gli altri percorsi? Per chi fosse interessato, il meno sconosciuto è il Percorso Belvedere di Cala Limpia, che attraversa l'area sud est della laguna ed è lungo 1.70 km. L'ultimo è il Percorso Belvedere di Sa Madrona (2.8 km), che consente di percorrere tutta la costa sud ovest di Es Grau
2) CAP DE FAVARITX
Siamo ancora all'interno del Parco Naturale S'Albufeira des Grau ma ci siamo spostati a 20 km a nord-ovest di Es Grau. E' qui che sorge uno dei fari più belli, se non il più bello delle intere Baleari, ovvero Cap de Favaritx. Il suo fascino non è soltanto legato alla bellezza estetica, ma anche e soprattutto per lo splendido paesaggio che lo circonda. Totalmente isolato dalla civiltà, infatti, è circondato da basse scogliere di ardesia scura, creando così un paesaggio lunare molto simile a quello che trovereste in molte aree degli Stati Uniti. Vi sembrerà di aver lasciato l'isola di Minorca per qualche minuto...
The final part of the trail, which is decidedly simple and well-marked (it takes about 40 minutes to complete it), runs along the fine, uncrowded beach until you reach. What about the other trails? For those interested, the least unfamiliar is the Cala Limpia Belvedere Trail, which runs through the southeastern area of the lagoon and is 1.70 km long. The last is the Belvedere Route of Sa Madrona (2.8 km), which allows you to walk the entire southwest coast of Es Grau
2) CAP DE FAVARITX
We are still within the S'Albufeira des Grau Natural Park but have moved 20 km northwest of Es Grau. It is here that stands one of the most beautiful lighthouses, probably the most beautiful in the entire Balearic Islands, namely Cap de Favaritx. Its charm is not only related to its aesthetic beauty, but also and above all because of the splendid landscape that surrounds it. Totally isolated from civilization, in fact, it is surrounded by low cliffs of dark slate, thus creating a lunar landscape very similar to what you would find in many areas of the United States. You will feel like you have left the island of Menorca for a few minutes....
Il parcheggio situato proprio a ridosso del faro è molto piccolo, per questo consigliamo di lasciare la vostra vettura nell'ampio parcheggio situato a circa 1.5 km di distanza dal faro e percorrere la scenografica Carrer de Favaritx a piedi, fermandovi ad ogni angolo per scattare qualche foto panoramica. La tradizione, inoltre, vuole che durante il plenilunio, chi dovesse avventurarsi in questa parte dell’isola potrà godere di forza, energia e fertilità.
The parking lot located right next to the lighthouse is very small, so we recommend that you leave your car in the large parking lot located about 1.5 km away from the lighthouse and walk along the scenic Carrer de Favaritx, stopping at every corner to take some panoramic photos. Tradition also has it that during the full moon, those who should venture to this part of the island will enjoy strength, energy and fertility.
3) BARRANC D'ALGENDAR
Se i primi due luoghi che vi abbiamo menzionato sono decisamente famosi ed affollati di visitatori, lo stesso non si può dire del bellissimo Barranc d'Algendar, forse il più affascinante tra i luoghi meno visitati di Minorca. Già, perchè nonostante si tratti di un bellissimo canyon con un'altrettanto semplice e divertente camminata, il Barranc rimane uno dei segreti meglio custoditi dell'isola, il che renderà la visita ancor più suggestiva. Questa volta siamo lontani da Mahon, la città di riferimento è Ferreries, anzi la grande rotonda lungo ma "ME-1" che apre le porte sulla città. Qui dovrete seguire il Camì d'Algendar, una piccola strada stretta (in salita per il primo tratto) che in una decina di minuti buoni vi porterà al parcheggio del canyon.
3) BARRANC D'ALGENDAR
If the first two places we mentioned above are definitely famous and crowded with visitors, the same cannot be said of the beautiful Barranc d'Algendar, perhaps the most fascinating of Menorca's less visited places. That's right, because although it is a beautiful canyon with an equally easy and enjoyable walk, the Barranc remains one of the island's best-kept secrets, which makes the visit even more evocative. This time we are away from Mahon, the town of reference is Ferreries, indeed the large traffic circle along the "ME-1" that opens the gates onto the town. Here you will have to follow the Camì d'Algendar, a small narrow road (uphill for the first stretch) that in a good ten minutes takes visitors to the canyon parking lot.
Fate attenzione perchè il parcheggio è uno solo (siamo su un terreno privato) ed è distante 500 metri dall'inizio del percorso (su una curva a gomito). Dopo aver lasciato la vostra vettura, percorrere a ritroso un pezzettino della strada che avrete appena percorso, poi sulla destra non potrete non notare l'ingresso alla gola.
Please be careful, because there is only one parking lot (this is a private land) and it is 500 meters away from the beginning of the trail (on a sharp bend). After leaving your car, walk backwards a small piece of the road you've just traveled, then you cannot fail to notice the entrance to the gorge, located on the right.
Da qui comincia il sentiero che vi condurrà nel cuore del Barranc d'Algendar, uno dei 30 Barrancs che si formano nella parte centrale dell'isola e che sfociano nelle tante calette di Minorca. Il più grande e famoso è proprio il Barranc d’Algendar, che possiede l’unico torrente dell’isola in cui l’acqua corrente è presente durante tutto l’anno, anche in estate.
The path that leads visitors into the heart of the Barranc d'Algendar, one of the 30 Barrancs that form in the central part of the island and flow into the many coves of Menorca, begins right here. The largest and most famous Barranc is precisely the Barranc d'Algendar, which has the only creek on the island where running water is present throughout the year, even in summer.
Il tratto più suggestivo è sicuramente il primo (El pas d'en Revull), circa 500 metri di passeggiata all'interno del bosco tra slot canyon ed un paesaggio molto simile a quello delle fiabe. Terminato questo tratto vi troverete su una mulattiera costeggiata dal fiume: da qui avrete due opzioni, svoltare a destra e tornare al parcheggio (avrete percorso così 1 km) oppure svoltare a sinistra e seguire per ancora un pezzetto il sentiero prima di tornare sui vostri passi.
The most impressive stretch is definitely the first one (El pas d'en Revull), a quick walk inside the forest between slot canyons and a landscape very similar to that of fairy tales. At the end of this section you will find yourself on a mule track bordered by the river: from here, there're two options, turn right and return to the parking lot (it's a 1 km loop trail) or turn left and follow the path for a little more before retracing your steps.
Siamo all'interno del Barranc e, se avrete svoltato a sinistra, vi imbatterete dopo neppure 500 metri nel Font de ses Penyes, una piccola fonte (senza acqua). Dall'altra parte della strada noterete anche la casa S'Aranjassa, gestita dalla Caritas. Noi abbiamo continuato ancora per un pezzetto lungo il Camì Vell, che all'epoca univa Ciutadela con Mahon, sino a raggiungere il ponticello sospeso che consente l'attraversamento del fiume ed il proseguimento del sentiero. Una volta raggiunto il ponte siamo tornati sui nostri passi.
We are within the Barranc and, if you turn left, you will come across the Font de ses Penyes, a small spring (without water). Across the street you will also notice the S'Aranjassa house, run by Caritas. We continued a little further along the Camì Vell, which at the time joined Ciutadela with Mahon, until we reached the small suspension bridge that allows visitors to cross the river and continue on the path. Once at the bridge we retraced our steps.
4) MONTE TORO
Una visita a Minorca che si rispetti non può prescindere dal Monte Toro, ovvero la vetta più alta dell'isola grazie ai suoi 357 metri di altitudine. E' il punto d'osservazione perfetto di tutta Minorca, situato a circa metà strada tra Mahon e Ciutadela.
4) MONTE TORO
A self-respecting visit to Menorca cannot ignore Monte Toro, which is the island's highest peak thanks to its 357 meters of altitude. It is the perfect vantage point of all Menorca, located about halfway between Mahon and Ciutadela.
Una volta saliti in cima (con la vostra auto), oltre a godere della splendida vista, potrete ammirare il Santuario risalente al XVII secolo, oggi abitato da una comunità francescana, pranzare nel ristorante con la vista più bella di tutta l'isola e fare un giro nel bellissimo negozio in cui potrete trovare di tutto, dagli abiti ai souvenir.
Once you climb to the top (with your own car), in addition to enjoying the beautiful view, you can admire the 17th-century shrine now inhabited by a Franciscan community, have lunch in the restaurant with the most beautiful view on the entire island, and take a tour of the beautiful store where you can find everything from clothes to souvenirs.

5) IL CIBO PIU' BUONO DI MINORCA
Nonostante sia un'isola relativamente piccola, i retaggi delle diverse culture che hanno abitato l'isola nel corso degli anni hanno decisamente lasciato il segno nella cucina minorchina. Ed è stata, almeno per noi amanti del buon cibo e desiderosi di sperimentare le prelibatezze del luogo, una piacevolissima sorpresa. Il colpo di fulmine è scattato (dopo 20 minuti spesi sull'isola) con l'Ensaimada, il dolce iconico di Minorca, probabilmente di origine araba. L'Ensaimada ha una base di farina, acqua, zucchero, uova e strutto, e si può cospargere di zucchero a velo, o eventualmente riempire. Il ripieno tradizionale è fatto di cabell d’àngel, una sorta di marmellata di zucca, ma si può farcire anche con dell’ottima crema pasticcera. Il bar con la migliore Ensaimada pare sia Can Pons, a Es Mercadal.
5) MINORCA'S TASTIEST FOOD
Despite being a relatively small island, the legacies of the different cultures that have inhabited the island over the years have definitely left their mark on all the Menorcan cuisine. And it has been a very pleasant surprise, at least for us, lovers of good food and eager to experience the local delicacies. It was love at first sight with the Ensaimada, Menorca's iconic dessert, probably of Arab origin. Ensaimada has a base of flour, water, sugar, eggs, and lard, and can be sprinkled with powdered sugar, or possibly filled. The traditional filling is made of cabell d'àngel, a kind of pumpkin jam, but it can also be stuffed with excellent custard. The bar with the best Ensaimada is Can Pons, in Es Mercadal.
Un altro piatto imperdibile è la Caldereta de Langosta, la famosa zuppa di aragosta di cui abbiamo parlato già nel secondo post. E', infatti, uno dei simboli della cittadina di Es Fornells, ed è di fatto una zuppa d aragoste preferibilmente femmine e non troppo giovani. Più sono vecchie, infatti, migliore sarà la qualità del brodo. Insieme all’aragosta ci sono anche pomodorini, cipolle, peperoncino verde, rametti di prezzemolo e fette di pane tostato. Noi tuttavia ci siamo innamorati di un piatto decisamente più semplice, che a Minorca rappresenta una sorta di inizio pasto, il Pan Tomate. E' un piatto semplicissimo, a volte può anche esser considerato uno spuntino, ed è molto simile alla nostra bruschetta. Vi basterà un buon pane, appena bruscato, bagnato col pomodoro ed un filo d'olio e non potrete più farne a meno. Concludiamo la carrellata di prelibatezze menzioniamo la Sobrasada, la salsiccia più famosa dell'isola, fatta con carni suine selezionate, i mitici Pastissets, biscotti di pastafrolla a forma di fiore, e l'altrettanto famoso formaggio di Mahon.
Another not-to-be-missed dish is Caldereta de Langosta, the famous lobster soup that we already mentioned in the second post. It is, in fact, one of the symbols of the town of Es Fornells, and is basically a soup of lobsters that are preferably female and not too young. The older they are, in fact, the better is the quality of the broth. Along with the lobster there are also cherry tomatoes, onions, green chilies, sprigs of parsley and slices of toasted bread. However, we felt in love with a decidedly simpler dish, which in Menorca is something of a starter: its name is Pan Tomate. It is a very simple dish, which sometimes can even be considered a snack, and is very similar to our bruschetta. All you need is a good bread, freshly toasted, soaked in tomato and a drizzle of oil, and you won't be able to do without it. Last bu not least, we mention the Sobrasada, the island's most famous sausage, made from selected pork, the legendary Pastissets, flower-shaped pastry cookies, and the equally famous Mahon cheese.
