Sono solo alcune delle eccellenze di Milwaukee, la principale città del Wisconsin, una città a misura d'uomo ad un'ora di treno da Chicago, nel nord del Midwest, dove d'inverno fa freddo (molto freddo) ed in estate si sta molto bene. Fondata nel 1818 dal francese Solomon Juneau, crebbe a dismisura grazie soprattutto all’immigrazione tedesca, la cui influenza è ben visibile ancora oggi grazie alle tante birrerie (Milwaukee è la casa della Miller, una delle birre più famose d'America) ed all'Oktoberfest che viene celebrato ogni ottobre. Oggi, pur non essendo propriamente una città che richiama folle di turisti, Milwaukee è una città godibile, capace negli ultimi sessant'anni di vivere un vero e proprio restyling, che ha permesso di ridurne lo spopolamento ed aumentarne la vivibilità. Soprattutto per chi visita Chicago, una breve tappa nella "città di Fonzie" è vivamente consigliata. These are just a few of the excellences of Milwaukee, Wisconsin's principal city, a human-scale city an hour's train ride from Chicago, in the northern Midwest, where it is cold (well, very cold!) in winter and very comfortable in summer. Founded in 1818 by Frenchman Solomon Juneau, it grew by leaps and bounds thanks largely to German immigration, whose influence is still clearly visible today thanks to the many breweries (Milwaukee is the home of Miller, one of America's most famous beers) and the Oktoberfest celebrated every October. Today, while not exactly a city that draws throngs of tourists, Milwaukee is an enjoyable city, capable in the last sixty years of experiencing a real makeover that has reduced depopulation and increased livability. Especially for those visiting Chicago, a short stop in the “city of Fonzie” is highly recommended. E' a Milwaukee che è nato il mito della Harley-Davidson, è qui che nel 1901 William Silvester Harley e Arthur Davidson hanno creato un marchio divenuto leggenda . Una volta usciti dalla Milwaukee Intermodal Station vi basterà camminare per cinque minuti superando il Sixth Street Northe Bridge per raggiungere quello che a tutti gli effetti è il "mondo Harley-Davidson", il paradiso per tutti gli appassionati di due ruote. Qui troverete uno splendido museo (orari: 10-17), il Negozio Harley-Davidson (10-17.30), lo spaccio aziendale (11-17.30) ed il Motor Bar and Restaurant (Aperto dalla domenica al mercoledì dalle 11:00 alle 20:00 e dal giovedì al sabato dalle 11:00 alle 21:00). Ottantamila metri quadri dedicati al mondo Harley, con in testa ovviamente il sorprendente museo, due piani che ripercorrono gli oltre 120 anni di storia di questo marchio, dai primi giorni, ai grandi modelli di ultima generazione. Tra le dieci cose da vedere da Milwaukee, beh... non può davvero mancare l'Harley Davidson Museum!
PROSSIMO STOP: Milwaukee Public Market. Per raggiungerlo potrete camminare per 1,6 km passando nuovamente davanti alla Intermodal Station, la stazione dei treni. 1) Harley Davidson Museum

It is in Milwaukee that the Harley-Davidson myth was born, it is here that in 1901 William Silvester Harley and Arthur Davidson created a brand that has become a legend. Once you leave the Milwaukee Intermodal Station, just walk for five minutes past the Sixth Street Northe Bridge to reach what is for all intents and purposes the “Harley-Davidson World,” a paradise for all two-wheeled enthusiasts. Here you will find a beautiful museum (opening hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), the Harley-Davidson Shop (10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.), the company store (11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and the Motor Bar and Restaurant (Open Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.). Eight acreds dedicated to the world of Harley-Davidson, led of course by the amazing museum, two floors tracing the more than 120-year history of this brand, from the earliest days, to the great models of the latest generation. Among Milwaukee's top ten things to see, well... you really can't miss the Harley Davidson Museum!
NEXT STOP: Milwaukee Public Market. To get there you can walk 1.6 km past again the Intermodal Station, the train station. From here, if you do not want to walk, you can board THE MKE HOP STREETCAR (https://thehopmke.com/interactive-map/) for free, which will take you right in front of the Public Market in a couple of minutes.
2) Historic Third Ward & Milwaukee Public Market
Il Milwaukee Public Market è sicuramente l'emblema dell'Historic Third Ward, la zona sicuramente più accattivante e creativa della città. Quest'area, infatti, è ricca di ristoranti e gallerie d'arte, punto di ritrovo per i tanti artisti della città di Milwaukee. Eppure Third Ward non è sempre stata così affascinante come lo è ora: questa è, infatti, l'antica area commerciale fondata dalla comunità irlandese (e poi devastata da un incendio nel 1892), una zona decisamente malfamata e con un alto tasso di criminalità. Per tutti era la “bloody third”. Furono gli italiani a ripopolare la zona dopo l'incendio: crearono diverse imprese e ridiedero vita ad un quartiere che perse tuttavia nuovamente centralità con la costruzione dell'autostrada. A cambiare le carte in tavola, a ridosso degli anni'80, fu l'opera di riqualificazione che ha portato Third Ward a diventare la zona più trendy di Milwaukee. Pensate che il tratto di Riverwalk che attraversa questo quartiere è stato premiato nel 2007 dalla American Institute of Architects come eccellenza nell’architettura urbanistica.
2) Historic Third Ward & Milwaukee Public Market
The Milwaukee Public Market is surely the epitome of the Historic Third Ward, surely the city's most engaging and creative area. This area, in fact, is filled with restaurants and art galleries, a gathering place for the city of Milwaukee's many artists. Yet Third Ward has not always been as glamorous as it is now: this is, in fact, the former commercial area founded by the Irish community (and then devastated by fire in 1892), a decidedly run-down area with a high crime rate. It was just called the “bloody third.” It was the Italians who repopulated the area after the fire: they created several businesses and revitalized a neighborhood that lost centrality again, however, with the construction of the highway. In the1980s this area has been redeveloped and now Third Ward is just the Milwaukee's trendiest area. Consider that the stretch of Riverwalk that runs through this neighborhood was honored in 2007 by the American Institute of Architects as excellence in urban architecture.
Il bellissimo Milwaukee Public Market ne è il fiore all'occhiello. Parliamo del più importante mercato cittadino di Milwaukee ed è quasi interamente dedicato alla vendita alimentare. E' il luogo migliore per gustarsi il pranzo, in compagnia dei tantissimi "locals" che l'affollano sostanzialmente tutti i giorni della settimana.

3) Lakefront Trail and Bronze Fonz
Il Riverwalk è da ormai più di trent'anni il lungofiume della città di Milwaukee, che si estende per ben venti isolati e costeggia il Milwaukee River, collegando tra di loro i distretti di Third Ward, Downtown e Beerline B, partendo dall’University of Wisconsin e passando per la McKinley Marina, il Veteran’s Park e il Milwaukee Art Museum. Particolarmente frequentato nei mesi estivi, quando finalmente Milwaukee si libera del gelido freddo del nord del Midwest, non è raro per il visitatore imbattersi in qualche festival che proprio durante l'estate si svolgono con regolarità. La grande attrazione del Riverwalk è sicuramente la statua di Bronze Fonz, che raffigura il mito della sit-com Happy Days Arthur Fonzarelli (Fonzie), ma particolarmente amata dai locali è anche quella dell'anatra Gertie, una femmina di Germano Reale che nel 1945 fece il suo nido proprio sotto il ponte di Wisconsin Avenue. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale la piccola famiglia di pennuti diede un messaggio di speranza ai cittadini, che spesso si fermavano ad osservare i progressi della covata: delle 9 uova deposte, 5 si schiusero. Gertie e i suoi piccoli furono trasferiti dapprima al centro commerciale Gimbels, dove furono salutati da oltre due milioni di persone, ed infine ricollocati nel laghetto del Juneau Park.

3) Lakefront Trail and Bronze Fonz
The Riverwalk has been the city of Milwaukee's riverfront for more than thirty years now, stretching a for twenty blocks and skirting the Milwaukee River, linking together the Third Ward, Downtown, and Beerline B districts, starting at the University of Wisconsin and passing through McKinley Marina, Veteran's Park, and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Particularly busy in the summer months, when Milwaukee finally breaks free from the frigid chill of the northern Midwest, it is not uncommon for the visitor to come across a few festivals that just happen with regularity during the summer. The Riverwalk's big attraction is definitely the Bronze Fonz statue, which depicts Happy Days sitcom legend Arthur Fonzarelli (Fonzie), but particularly beloved by locals is also that of the Gertie duck, a female Mallard who made her nest right under the Wisconsin Avenue bridge in 1945. During World War II, the small feathered family gave a message of hope to citizens, who often stopped to watch the brood's progress: of the nine eggs laid, five hatched. Gertie and her hatchlings were first moved to Gimbels Mall, where they were greeted by more than two million people, and finally relocated to the Juneau Park pond.

4) City Hall
Risalente al 1895, il City Hall è l'imponente municipio di Milwaukee. Il palazzo ha otto piani e vanta una torre di oltre 100 metri, la cui campana è dedicata a Solomon Juneau, fondatore e primo sindaco di Milwaukee. La sommità della torre è stata ricostruita a seguito di un incendio nel 1929, e ricorda molto le torri civiche tipiche della Germania.

5) Veterans Park & Lake Park
Veterans Park è il principale polmone verde dell'area centrale di Milwaukee. Il parco sorge sulle sponde del lago Michigan: seduto su una panchina, potrai rilassarti osservando lo splendido corso d’acqua e lasciarti cullare dalla fresca brezza, oppure decidere di affittare un pedalò o un kayak e partire all’avventura. Continuando a nord costeggiando il lago Michigan entrerete nel Lake Park, che fa parte di un sistema di ben 200 km di sentieri che si snodano per tutta la città di Milwaukee. Al suo interno non mancate il bellissimo faro.

4) City Hall
Dating back to 1895, this is Milwaukee's imposing City Hall. The building has eight stories and boasts a tower over 100 feet high, whose bell is dedicated to Solomon Juneau, founder and Milwaukee's first mayor. The top of the tower was rebuilt following a fire in 1929, and is very reminiscent of typical civic towers in Germany.

5) Veterans Park & Lake Park
Veterans Park is the main green lung in the central Milwaukee. The park sits on the shores of Lake Michigan: sitting on a bench, you can relax while observing the beautiful waterway and be lulled by the cool breeze, or decide to rent a paddleboat or kayak and set off on an adventure. Continuing north along Lake Michigan you will enter Lake Park, which is part of a system of no less than 200 miles of trails that wind throughout the city of Milwaukee. Inside, don't miss the beautiful lighthouse.

6) "The Calling"
Lasciando il parco a sud la vista che si apre davanti a voi è "da cartolina". Qui spiccano i musei Mam e poco più a sud il Discovery World. Ma, proprio sulla curva che dà il via a Wisconsin Avenue, la principale via del centro di Milwaukee, non potrete non notare la scultura "The Calling" di Mark di Suvero. Si erge per 40 piedi ed è fatta di acciaio e travi, che l'artista ha dipinto un colore rosso-arancio ad immagine e somiglianza di un sole nascente che è anche il "nickname" della scultura stessa.

6) “The Calling”
Leaving the park to the south, there's a “postcard-perfect” view. Prominent here are the Mam Museums and a little further south the Discovery World. But just on the curve that kicks off Wisconsin Avenue, the main thoroughfare of downtown Milwaukee, you cannot fail to notice Mark di Suvero's sculpture called “The Calling.” It stands 40 feet tall and is made of steel and beams, which the artist painted a red-orange color in the image and likeness of a rising sun that is also the “nickname” of the sculpture itself.

7) Wisconsin Avenue
Wisconsin Avenue, la via che si estende dal lago Michigan fino alla Marquette University è l'arteria principale di Milwaukee. Spiccano lungo la via il murales dedicato a Yannis Antetokoumpo, la stella dei greca dei Milwaukee Bucks della Nba e il palazzo della Corte Federale.
PROSSIMO STOP: Great Lakes Distillery (2.4 km - consigliato il bus 18) - Da qui bus 19 per raggiungere la Lakefront Brewery
7) Wisconsin Avenue
Wisconsin Avenue, the street that stretches from Lake Michigan to Marquette University is Milwaukee's main artery. Prominent along the street are the mural dedicated to Yannis Antetokoumpo, the Greek star of the Nba's Milwaukee Bucks, and the Federal Court building.
NEXT STOP: Great Lakes Distillery (2.4 km - bus 18 recommended) - From here bus 19 to Lakefront Brewery.
8) Great Lakes Distillery e Lakefront Brewery
Milwaukee è nota negli Stati Uniti anche per essere la città della birra: qui, infatti, sorgono molti birrifici storici (uno è molto famoso e ne parleremo a breve), tutti con i propri specifici prodotti che, negli anni, hanno contribuito allo sviluppo della cultura enogastronomica della città di Milwaukee. La prima birreria aperta in città dopo che il proibizionismo fu abolito è la Great Lakes Distillery, che ogni giorno offre tour della distilleria. Se non vuoi prendere parte alle visite guidate, potrai sempre visitare la tasting room, dove sorseggiare una birra accompagna da un piatto di cheese curds, le crocchette di formaggio tipiche dello stato del Wisconsin. Altrettanto interessante è la Lakefront Brewery, anche e soprattutto per la sua suggestiva posizione a bordo fiume. Tra le caratteristiche più interessanti di questa brewery c'è anche il fatto che consente visite guidate fino a sera e, in accompagnamento vengono offerti ben 4 assaggi di birra.
PROSSIMO STOP: Marquette University (3 km - Bus 19)
9) Marquette University
L'università principale di tutto lo stato del Wisconsin è Marquette University, situata proprio ad un tiro di schioppo dal downtown di Milwaukee. Fondata dai Gesuiti nel 1881, è una delle più grandi università gesuite degli Stati Uniti ed accoglie quasi 12.000 alunni. E, come sempre quando ci si trova in una università statunitense, è affascinante visitarne il campus, andando in questo caso alla ricerca di edifici antichi, almeno per quanto riguarda gli Stati Uniti, come ad esempio la Chiesa del Gesù. Nel cuore del campus spicca anche la St Joan of Arch Chapelle, trasportata pietra per pietra dalla Francia e rimontata a Milwaukee negli anni sessanta.
