Quando si pianifica un road trip bisogna sempre mostrare una certa flessibilità. I piani cambiano, a volte in corsa, a volte poco prima di partire per il viaggio. E' quello che è successo a noi, quando con il cuore affranto abbiamo realizzato che i tremendi incendi che hanno afflitto nel mese di luglio 2025 l'area a nord del Grand Canyon aveva lasciato profonde cicatrici dietro di sé. Da un momento all'altro, infatti, oltre ai danni già pesanti causati al North Rim del Grand Canyon, anche l'unico lodge del parco, il Grand Canyon Lodge, si era sgretolato arrendendosi alla forza dirompente del fuoco. Un colpo al cuore, un enorme colpo al cuore. Sarebbe stata la prima volta nel versante nord del Grand Canyon, quello meno turistico, un'esperienza che sin dall'inizio avevo chiesto a Roberta (che non era mai stata al Grand Canyon) di poter fare perchè sapevo non avrebbe deluso. Da qui avremo proseguito verso nord, e quindi verso Las Vegas, per poi riprendere la Route 66 sino a Los Angeles. I piani cambiano e sono cambiati anche i nostri, abbiamo detto. E quindi niente più North Rim, ma via verso il South Rim e poi di nuovo verso la Route 66. Un programma ridisegnato per questa e per la prossima tappa, che nonostante tutto ci ha regalato grandissime emozioni ed anche un pizzico di adrenalina...
When planning a road trip, you always need to be flexible. Plans change, sometimes during the journey, sometimes just before you set off on your journey. That's what happened to us when we realized with a heavy heart that the terrible fires that plagued the area north of the Grand Canyon in July 2025 had left deep scars behind. In fact, in addition to the already heavy damage caused to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, the park's only lodge, the Grand Canyon Lodge, had also crumbled, succumbing to the destructive force of the fire. It was a blow to the heart, a huge blow to the heart. It would have been our first time on the north side of the Grand Canyon, the less touristy side, an experience that I had asked Roberta (who had never been to the Grand Canyon) to do because I knew it would not disappoint. From there, we would have continued north, and then to Las Vegas, before taking Route 66 to Los Angeles. Plans change, and so did ours, we said. So no more North Rim, replaced by the South Rim and then back to Route 66. A redesigned itinerary for this and the next leg, which despite everything gave us great emotions and even a bit of adrenaline...
CATHEDRAL WASH TRAILHED, IL SENTIERO VERSO IL COLORADO RIVER
Dobbiamo ammettere che nei sedici giorni spesi negli Stati Uniti è filato tutto liscio, tranne che per un paio d'ore, ovvero quelle che vi stiamo raccontando. Avevo chiesto a Roberta se, prima di raggiungere il South Rim del Grand Canyon, potessimo fare una sosta in quello che era il tratto della tappa originaria, ovvero quello che ci avrebbe portato al North Rim. A Bitter Springs dunque abbiamo svoltato a destra dirigendoci verso il Marble Canyon ed il Colorado River, con l'obiettivo di raggiungere nuovamente il Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Volevo percorrere un sentiero, non dei più facili, ma che ci avrebbe regalato un finale da sogno, ovvero raggiungere le sponde del fiume Colorado. Questo trail è il Cathedral Wash Trailhead, uno dei più belli tra quelli situati nei dintorni di Page (6 km a/r).
CATHEDRAL WASH TRAILHED, THE TRAIL TO THE COLORADO RIVER
We have to admit that during our sixteen days in the United States, everything went smoothly, except for a couple of hours, which we are about to tell you about. I asked Roberta if, before reaching the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, we could make a stop at what was the original stage of the trip, the one that would have taken us to the North Rim. So, at Bitter Springs, we turned right towards Marble Canyon and the Colorado River, with the aim of reaching the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area again. I wanted to take a trail that was not the easiest, but which would give us a dream ending, namely reaching the banks of the Colorado River. This trail is the Cathedral Wash Trailhead, one of the most beautiful trails in the Page area (6 km round trip).
Il parcheggio non è semplice da trovare (sulla sinistra, a bordo strada), ed il sentiero nonostante si spinga verso destra (e quindi verso il fiume), comincia da sinistra, passando poi sotto la strada. Nei giorni prima aveva piovuto, e anche questa mattina il cielo non prometteva nulla di buono. Avevo tuttavia mandato una mail al visitor center del Glen Canyon che mi aveva sconsigliato di avventurarmi nella giornata di ieri, ma che avrei tranquillamente potuto percorrerlo oggi. I segnali però non erano incoraggianti. Ci siamo solo noi, piove, notiamo impronte non proprio rassicuranti nel terreno ed il sentiero sapevamo essere non proprio semplicissimo, con tratti in cui avremmo dovuto arrampicarsi per superare i "wash".
The parking lot is not easy to find (on the left, at the side of the road), and although the trail heads to the right (and therefore towards the river), it starts on the left, then passes under the road. It had rained in the previous days, and even this morning the sky does not bode well. However, I had sent an email to the Glen Canyon visitor center two days before: "I suggest you not to go today (yesterday), tomorrow (today) it will be better" was their reply. The signs, however, were not encouraging. We were the only ones there, it was raining, we noticed some rather worrying footprints in the ground, and we knew the trail wasn't exactly easy, with sections where we would have to climb to get over the washes.
La pioggia aumenta e, giunti a tre quarti del percorso, non riusciamo più a proseguire. Il Colorado non è molto lontano, lo sentiamo in lontananza, ma l'acqua nei wash e quella che sta cadendo copiosamente ci fanno desistere. Vedo che Roberta è spaventata (ha imparato durante il viaggio cosa siano i flash flood e la loro pericolosità) è anche un po' arrabbiata con me...sulla via del ritorno, fradicia, so che mi sta maledicendo!
The rain intensifies and, three-quarters of the way there, we can just no longer continue. Colorado is not far away, we can hear it in the distance, but the water in the washes and the heavy rain force us to give up. I can see that Roberta is scared (she learned during the trip what flash floods are and how dangerous they can be) and she is also a little angry with me... on the way back, soaking wet, I know she is cursing me!
Come vi avevo accennato però sono due le ore in cui è successo di tutto. Prima la paura nel sentiero, poi, appena lasciato il Glen Canyon, l'essere fermato dalla polizia per la prima volta dopo 25 viaggi. Ebbene sì, me lo sono meritato perchè stavo andando oltre i limiti. Appena realizzo che il poliziotto ha fatto inversione mi fermo a bordo strada, un erroraccio. "Perchè ti sei fermato, non avevo le luci accese" dice lui. "Ehm, so di aver sbagliato quindi mi sono subito fermato.". "Prosegui per un miglio, troverai una piazzola, fermati li" controbatte. Sono pronto alla mia prima multa americana. "Ti ho fermato perchè stavi viaggiando oltre i limiti consentiti" mi dice aggiungendo "come mai siete così fradici?". "Arriviamo dal Cathedral Wash, abbiamo preso tanta acqua e volevamo arrivare il prima possibile all'hotel per asciugarci". Non so se è per pietà, non so se è stata la faccia di Roberta che era tutto un programma ("si rende conto con chi sto andando in giro io?") o se per i miei mille viaggi in Usa ("così tanti? come mai non ti trasferisci? mi ha detto), ma la multa non arriva. "Questo ragazzi è un "warning per speed limit", (avvertimento per limiti di velocità). Potete andare... piano però!". Nella lista delle cose sperimentate negli Stati Uniti aggiungiamo anche questa. E nella lista del perchè non smetto di amarli sì, c'è anche questo!
IL SOUTH RIM DEL GRAN CANYON - GUIDA ALLA VISITA
Il Grand Canyon lo conoscono tutti. E' un luogo magico, sognato da molti, ma che non aveva colpito così tanto il sottoscritto durante la prima visita. Succede a molti di dire "bello, per carità, il Bryce Canyon è molto più affascinante". E potete sostituire il Bryce Canyon con altre bellezze dell'Arizona e dello Utah. Come con Tulsa, la seconda volta è stata decisiva perchè mi sono letteralmente innamorato di una delle sette meraviglie del mondo, un'enorme fenditura scavata dal fiume Colorado nel corso di milioni e milioni di anni. Mi aspettavo tantissime persone ed invece c'èra pochissima gente. Eppure era agosto... E percorrere in quasi totale solitaria la Hermits Rest Route (attraverso la navetta messa a disposizione del parco) e godersi nel migliore dei modi un fantastico tramonto è stata davvero la ciliegina sulla torta di questo breve excursus dalla Route 66.
As I mentioned, however, everything happened in the space of just two hours. First, the fear on the trail, then, just after leaving Glen Canyon, being stopped by the police for the first time after 25 trips. Well, I totally deserved it because I wasjust speeding. As soon as I realized that the police officer had turned around, I pulled over to the side of the road, which was a big mistake. “Why did you stop? I didn't have my lights on,” he said. “Um, I know I was wrong, so I stopped right away.” “Continue for a mile, you'll find a lay-by, stop there,” he replied. I was ready for my first American ticket. “I stopped you because you were traveling over the speed limit,” he said, adding, “Why are you so wet?”. “We're coming from Cathedral Wash, we got caught in a downpour and wanted to get to the hotel as soon as possible to dry off.” I don't know, perhaps simple compassion, or probably becauseof Roberta's face that said it all (“do you realize who I'm traveling with?”) or maybe because of my many trips to the US (“so many? Why don't you move here?” he said), but the ticket didn't come. “Guys, this is a speed limit warning.” You can go... but slowly!" We add this to the list of things we've experienced in the United States. And to the list of reasons why I never stop loving them.
THE SOUTH RIM OF THE GRAND CANYON - VISITOR'S GUIDE
Everyone knows the Grand Canyon. It is a magical place, dreamed of by many, but it did not impress me that much during my first visit. Many people say, “It's beautiful, of course, but Bryce Canyon is much more fascinating.” And you can replace Bryce Canyon with other beautiful places in Arizona and Utah. As with Tulsa, the second time was decisive because I literally fell in love with one of the seven wonders of the world, a huge crevice carved out by the Colorado River over millions and millions of years. I expected lots of people, but instead there were very few. And yet it was August... Walking almost alone along the Hermits Rest Route (via the shuttle provided by the park) and enjoying a fantastic sunset in the best possible way was really the icing on the cake of this short excursion from Route 66.
Il South Rim, l'unico aperto in questo momento dopo i disastri causati dagli incendi del 2025, è anche quello più turistico. Qui trovate tanti alloggi, una cittadina di riferimento (Tusayan) e tutti i servizi che rendono la permanenza davvero comoda. Arrivando da est, tuttavia, il visitatore si troverà di fronte una parte di Grand Canyon attraversabile con la propria vettura, fermandosi ai vari view point e percorrendo anche qualche sentiero. Di cose da vedere nel Grand Canyon ce ne sono davvero tante...
The South Rim, the only part of the Grand Canyon still open at the moment after the disasters caused by the fires of 2025, is also the most touristy. Here you will find plenty of accommodation, a town (Tusayan) and all the amenities you need to make your stay truly comfortable. However, visitors coming from north east (Page) will find themselves facing a part of the Grand Canyon that can be crossed by car, stopping at various viewpoints and even walking along a few trails. There are so many things to see in the Grand Canyon...
Incrocerete il Desert View Watchtower, uno dei view point più interessanti ed affollati di questo tratto di Grand Canyon, con la sua Watch Tower (una torre d'ispirazione indiana che ospita alcuni affreschi Hopi) che svetta su tutto il crinale. Da non perdere neppure i successivi Navajo Point e Lipan Point, dai quali si può ammirare il fiume Colorado e fare una sosta al Tusayan Museum, dove sono raccolti documenti, gioielli e utensili delle culture Anasazi e Hopi.L'ultimo stop prima di entrare nel Grand Canyon Village è Moran Point, mentre se avrete voglia di camminare il sentiero da non perdere è il Shoshone Point Trail (3.4 km a/r).
You will come across Desert View Watchtower, one of the most interesting and crowded viewpoints on this stretch of the Grand Canyon, with its Watch Tower (an Indian-inspired tower housing some Hopi frescoes) towering over the entire ridge. Don't miss the next stops, Navajo Point and Lipan Point, from which you can admire the Colorado River and stop at the Tusayan Museum, which houses documents, jewelry, and tools from the Anasazi and Hopi cultures. The last stop before entering Grand Canyon Village is Moran Point, and if you feel like walking, don't miss the Shoshone Point Trail (3.4 km round trip).
Per visitare invece la parte centrale del parco, quella del Grand Canyon Village, dovrete per forza di cose usufruire delle navette messe a disposizione dal parco nazionale. Il sistema di navette è molto organizzato e consente al visitatore di usufruire di tre circuiti chiusi, collegati tra loro ma non sovrapposti. Le linee sono verde, blu e rosso. La Village Route percorre l'intero Grand Canyon Village, collegando i lodge con i vari ristoranti ed il visitor center del Grand Canyon National Park.
To visit the central part of the park, the Grand Canyon Village, visitors have to use the shuttles provided by the national park. The shuttle system is very well organized and allows visitors to use three closed circuits, which are connected but do not overlap. The lines are green, blue, and red. The Village Route runs through the entire Grand Canyon Village, connecting the lodges with the various restaurants and the Grand Canyon National Park visitor center.
Quella più interessante è però la Hermits Rest Route, che si occupa della parte più a ovest del South Rim. Ed è proprio qui che ci siamo concentrati, su questa strada di 13 km che ha letteralmente cambiato la mia opinione su tutto il Grand Canyon.
The most interesting, however, is the Hermits Rest Route, which covers the westernmost part of the South Rim. And this is where we focused our attention, on this 13 km road that literally changed my opinion of the entire Grand Canyon.
Questa linea (ross), consente dal 1 marzo al 30 novembre dal Grand Canyon Village di raggiungere Hermits Rest, il punto più ad ovest del parco. Quando questo percorso è attivo, nessun veicolo privato può percorrere la Hermit Road. E' possibile scendere in tutte le fermate e riprendere poi la navetta quando compie il percorso inverso. Gli stop sono i seguenti: Bright Angel Trailhead: Trailview Overlook Maricopa Point, Powell Point, Hopi Point, Mohave Point, The Abyss, Pima Point e Hermits Rest. Noi siamo rimasti sulla navetta sino al penultimo view point (Pima Point) e poi abbiamo percorso a piedi il tratto che ci ha portato a Hopi Point e Mohave Point, il luogo dove abbiamo potuto ammirare uno dei tramonti più belli del viaggio.
This line (red) runs from March 1 to November 30 from Grand Canyon Village to Hermits Rest, the westernmost point of the park. When this route is active, no private vehicles are allowed on Hermit Road. You can get off at any stop and then take the shuttle back when it makes the return trip. The stops are as follows: Bright Angel Trailhead: Trailview Overlook Maricopa Point, Powell Point, Hopi Point, Mohave Point, The Abyss, Pima Point, and Hermits Rest. We stayed on the shuttle until the penultimate viewpoint (Pima Point) and then walked the stretch that took us to Hopi Point and Mohave Point, where we were able to admire one of the most beautiful sunsets of the trip.
