Northern California, Western Nevada & Oregon - The second time around is always better (Day 7: klamath Falls - Eugene)

Sì, tutto qui ruota intorno all'unico parco nazionale dello stato, Crater Lake National Park, l'orgoglio principale a livello naturalistico dell'intero Oregon.

Thinking about Oregon, it comes immediately to mind the Nike, which has been the pride of the Beaver State for over 50 years. And then, in terms of natural beauty, there’s the wild coastline, landscapes that range from desert to mountain in the span of just a few kilometers, the city of Portland, and much more, so much so that we wouldn’t be surprised if, in about ten years, the “Pacific Wonderland”—as many of the state’s license plates proclaim—becomes a popular destination not only for American tourists but also for European ones. To be honest, we hope this never happens, because that natural paradise called Oregon should be admired with all the peace, tranquility, and often solitude that certain parts of the state still offer. The further you drive along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, after leaving Klamath Falls behind, the more the landscape changes. Towns are less and less and few of them are more than just ghost towns, such as Fort Klamath, a sort of tiny “gate town” you’ll come across shortly after turning onto Route 62, also known as the Crater Lake Highway. Yes, everything here revolves around the state’s only national park, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon’s greatest natural treasure.

(Crater Lake National Park)

Crater Lake is a dormant volcano located in the southern part of the Cascade Range, the mountain range that stretches from north to south, from northern Washington State to northern California. The lake is known for its intense blue color, which is the result of its depth of 1,900 feet (nearly 600 meters), making it the seventh-deepest lake in the world.

Did you know that, when the first visitors took photos of Crater Lake and got the photos developed,, Kodak offered to refund the cost of development because they believed the lake’s blue color was so unreal that it couldn’t possibly be true? According to them, it was clearly a mistake in the printing process. Legend or reality? The fact is that that you’ll hardly ever see a blue like Crater Lake’s anywhere else. Among the things to see and do in Oregon, well… Crater Lake National Park is definitely a must-see…

Come visitare e cosa vedere a Crater Lake? E' semplicissimo.

How to visit Crater Lake and what is there to see? It’s very simple. The road that runs along the lake, allowing visitors to admire it from various viewpoints, is called Rim Drive, and just the drive will let you experience the best the lake has to offer as you travel along the entire rim of the crater for about 33 miles (divided into east and west sections). But if you’re looking for a little something extra, you can take the boat to Wizard Island, a small cone-shaped island located in the center of the lake. Don’t forget that to reach the boat, you’ll need to hike the 2.2-mile (round trip) Cleetwood Cove Trail down to the lake’s shore, which is 700 feet below road level. Going down won’t be difficult at all, but going back may be challenging.

(Garfield Peak Trail)

Let's start by telling you about the trail we hiked, one of the most scenic ones: Garfield Peak, a 3.3-mile trail with an elevation gain of about 300 meters, located east of Crater Lake Lodge. Several spots along the trail offer different and unique views of the Phantom Ship and Dutton Cliff, especially in the late afternoon when the colors of the lake change. If you make it to the end, it means you’ll be at the summit of Garfield Peak. Before embarking on the trail, stop (just before the lodge) at the Sinnot Memorial Overlook, one of the best vantage points for viewing Crater Lake.

Phanton ship – sun notch trail

From here, we recommend taking Rim Drive counterclockwise until you reach the park’s other iconic areas. The other most notable viewpoints are as follows:

Phantom Ship – Sun Notch Trail

A rock formation rising from the water, shaped like a ship preparing to set sail. To get the best view, you can take a trail (1.2m) that leads to the top of the Sun Notch promontory.

Pinnacles Overlook

Pinnacles Overlook
This detour along the eastern side of the Rim Drive well worth the 6 miles off the main road. You'll be able to admire something different, spires reminiscent of those of Bryce Canyon, although, of course, they’re nowhere near as impressive as Utah’s magnificent hoodoos.

Pumice Castle Overlook
A layer of orange pumice rock is the hallmark of this viewpoint, located 1.1 miles west of Cloudcap Overlook and 2.4 miles east of Phantom Ship Overlook.

Cloudcap Overlook
This overlook is located at the end of Oregon’s highest paved road (1 mile), a short detour off the Rim Drive.

Merriam Point

A beautiful viewpoint at the end of the Volcanic Legacy Byway. From here, you can choose to leave the park heading north or complete the loop along Rim Drive.

Watchman Overlook
The best sight on Wizard Island, a cone emerged from Crater Lake about 7,300 years ago. It is located 3.8 miles west of the Village. If you feel like hiking, the main alternative to Garfield Peak, is the 3.5 km round-trip trail (the first part is all uphill) that leads to the summit at The Watchman Observation Station.

Discovery Point
It was right here, in 1853, that gold prospector John Hillman first stumbled upon what he did not hesitate to call the “Deep Blue Lake.” The 2.2-mile round-trip trail of the same name also begins here.

Once you leave Crater Lake, you can choose among two roads. The first heads north along the The Dalles-California Highway (“97”), which will take you to the Washington state border in the driest part of the state. Among the natural wonders you can visit, which we covered in depth in our posts dedicated to the 2017 trip (OREGON), are the Fort Rock State Natural Area, the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, the lively city of Bend, the stunning Smith Rock State Park, and finally the scenic Painted Hills within the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Or, as we did, you can follow the Willamette Valley Scenic Byway (Oregon Route 58), one of the most scenic roads in the Cascade Range in central Oregon, offering 86 miles of lush forests, sparkling lakes, stunning wildlife, and plenty of places to hike, fish, camp, swim, or simply stop and relax. Along the route, towns and services are scarce, if not entirely absent; Oakridge, 40 miles southeast of Eugene, is the only town of any significant size. Yes, as is often the case in this wonderful American state called Oregon, you’ll find yourself in an almost completely unspoiled setting. Along these 86 miles of Scenic Byway, you shouldn't miss Salt Creek Falls State Park, a state park famous for being home to Oregon’s second-highest waterfall (after Multnomah Falls, which we featured on our 2017 trip), with a drop of 87 meters (286 feet). Salt Creek Falls is one of the state’s most impressive waterfalls, with an average annual flow of 50,000 gallons per minute cascading over the rocks. You can admire it from above or by following a short trail lined with informational signs that allows visitors to get quite close to the waterfall. We stopped at the end of the trail, but we noticed several locals continuing all the way to the base of the falls itself, even though there is no marked trail and the risk of slipping and getting hurt is very, very high.

And then there are the iconic covered bridges typical of New England but also particularly common in the Pacific Northwest. You’ll find several of them along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, starting with the most picturesque one, the Historic Office Covered Bridge, in the tiny community of Westfir. The bridge spans the Willamette River at the southern end of the Aufderheide National Scenic Byway, on the edge of the Willamette National Forest, and it is not only the longest covered bridge in Oregon (55 meters) but also one of only two bridges in the state to feature a triple-truss Howe structure. It is also the only covered bridge west of the Mississippi River equipped with a separate pedestrian walkway. We also visited the Panwin Covered Bridge, built in 1921 as a 23-meter (75-foot) single-lane bridge over Lost Creek, and the Historic Pengra Covered Bridge, tucked away in the countryside of the Willamette Valley, not far from Eugene.

Well, Eugene. Our day comes to a close in Oregon’s third-largest city, along the Willamette River, which gives its name to the entire valley, a stunning wine region particularly famous for its Pinot Noir. The Willamette Valley is an incredibly beautiful area, with rolling hills, mysterious forests, and majestic volcanoes. It’s also one of the world’s leading wine regions thanks to its unique soil and climate, making it a must-visit for any wine lover. The region is widely acclaimed for its wide range of wineries, from small family-run operations to large corporate estates, offering two types of premium wines: reds and whites. Their quality has been recognized worldwide. Since we didn’t have time to visit a winery (a flaw of the United States is that many businesses, even in the summer, close at 5 p.m.), we decided to stop in downtown Eugene and treat ourselves to an excellent glass of wine at Jscott Cellars, a wine bar we’d chosen as our top option to finally taste Oregon wine.

 (Jscott Cellars - Eugene)

In Eugene, a charming college town, there’s a truly youthful vibe. And it’s not just about the wine, because sports reign supreme here, so much so that it’s been dubbed “Tracktown USA,” the world capital of track and field. And the connection to Nike is incredibly strong. That’s right, because even though the offices and campus of the world-famous footwear company are located in Beaverton, south of Portland (we talked about this in a dedicated post from our 2017 trip), Nike was actually founded right here in Eugene in the 1960s, thanks to student and middle-distance runner Phil Knight and his track and field coach Bill Bowerman (from the University of Oregon). In Eugene, and specifically at Hayward Field (the university’s track and field stadium), Bowerman tested his first shoe designs, using even a waffle iron to create the famous serrated sole. If you love sports, and track and field in particular, you’ll feel like you’re in heaven: it’s here, in fact, that the legendary “trials” are held every four years to qualify American athletes for the upcoming Olympics. Every restaurant and bar here is all about wine and sports.

But if you really want to hang out with college students in a truly unique setting, don’t go too far from Matthew Knight Arena, the venue where the Oregon Ducks of the NCAA basketball play their home games. Right across the street, there’s a small pizzeria, which, of course, is called TrackTown Pizza, where you’ll likely be one of the very few adults. Everything there is all about sports, the Oregon Ducks, Nike, and track and field. And the pizza tastes even better because this is where you can really experience the “real” America...
