The ultimate 2 day trip itinerary in Edinburgh, the "Auld Reekie" city of Scotland (day 2: Princess Street Gardens, Edinburgh Castle, Old Town, Royal Mile, Palace of Holyroodhouse and National Monument)

Edinburgh is particularly famous for its medieval charm, which is especially evident when strolling through its magnificent Old Town, so different from the New Town, but equally fascinating. In the Middle Ages, Edinburgh was, in fact, a sort of fortress occupied by the English starting in the 7th century, who gave the city the name Eiden’s burgh (“burgh” meaning “fortified town”). Today, the imposing castle stands as a symbol of this glorious past and will take up much of a decidedly packed second day, during which we’ll explore the medieval heart of Edinburgh far and wide, walking through narrow streets and courtyards, ancient churches turned into markets, massive cathedrals, and of course the shops along the famous Royal Mile. If you’re looking for the perfect route to discover the best of Edinburgh in two days, here is the recommended itinerary for the second, very busy day in the Scottish capital.

(Victoria Street - Old Town)

(St Giles Cathedral)

We’d like to start the day at the foot of the castle, in the picturesque and immaculately maintained Princes Street Gardens, which offer a stunning view of the hilltop where the castle stands and the entire Old Town. Start your visit outside the gardens and then at the Scott Monument, which, at 61 meters tall, is the largest monument dedicated to a writer, in this case, the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. Then head to the National Gallery of Scotland, the last of the Scottish National Galleries (free admission), which houses works by artists of the caliber of Vermeer, Titian, Rembrandt, Velázquez, and several other Impressionists.

(Scott Monument)

Next to the National Gallery, you’ll find the steps leading down to the charming Princess Street Gardens, famous for the gilded Ross Fountain and St. John’s Church, a church particularly renowned for the view from its roof and its magnificent interior.

(Princess Street Gardens and Ross Fountain)

At the top of the volcanic hill known as Castle Hill, as mentioned, you'll notice the Edinburgh Castle. This is the place where we're about to spend the second half of the morning (please check the official website for opening hours and admission prices: https://www.edinburghcastle.scot/plan-your-visit/opening-times/). The historic fortress, built in several phases, has always been the tourist symbol of all of Edinburgh. It ranges from St. Margaret’s Chapel, dating back to the 12th century, to the Great Hall built by James IV in 1510, passing through the late 16th-century Half Moon Battery and the Scottish National War Memorial, which dates back to the post-World War I era. Cross the drawbridge to reach the Honours of Scotland (the Crown Jewels), among the oldest royal regalia in Europe, and the famous Stone of Destiny, upon which all Scottish monarchs have been crowned. Every day at 1:00 p.m. (except Sundays), a very special event takes place, a tradition dating back to 1861. At exactly 1:00 p.m., the Artillery General fires a shot from a modern cannon, which was once used to signal the exact time to sailors and locals.

(Edinburgh Castle)

Just outside the castle, look up at the sky and, if you can, try to spot a cannonball embedded in a building, the Cannonball House. You’ll find it right next to the staircase, but you’ll have to be pretty sharp-eyed to notice the cannonball in one of the windows on the west wall. There are two theories about what happened: the first is that the cannonball was fired from the castle toward Holyrood Palace while it was hosting Bonnie Prince Charlie during his Jacobite rebellion; the second and more plausible theory is that it was placed there on purpose to mark the elevation above sea level of the reservoirs on the surrounding hills that supplied the city with fresh water.

Head down the steps to the iconic Grassmarket, the charming square that in medieval Edinburgh served as both a marketplace and a site for public hangings. Don’t be surprised by the names of the pubs (such as The Last Drop, the final stop for those sentenced to death) or by the fact that the cobblestones of the square were once so uneven that they brought a man back to life moments after he had been hanged. Well, the death sentence was suspended, and the man was set free...

(Grassmarket)

As you might have guessed, for most of the day you won’t need to use public transportation. Everything is truly within… a very short walk, especially here in the beautiful Old Town, a charming labyrinth of medieval streets paved with black stone and lined with dark buildings, which gives the city an atmosphere that is elegant but with a sinister look. Legend has it, in fact, that the narrow streets (“wynds” in Scottish) are full of ghosts, as are the alleyways and covered passageways (closes).

 (Royal Mile)

Start your adventure in the Old Town by strolling down picturesque Victoria Street, one of Edinburgh’s most iconic and frequently photographed streets. Located in the Old Town, it is famous for its distinctive curved shape, its two-story architecture, and the colorful facades of its buildings.

(Victoria Street)

Not far from Victoria Street, look for a very unusual statue of a dog. It is Greyfriars Bobby, a long-haired Skye terrier, belonged to John Gray, an Edinburgh policeman. Grey and Bobby were best friends until the officer passed away from tuberculosis in 1858. When Bobby’s master was buried in Greyfriars Cemetery, the dog accompanied his friend and lived for the following 14 years in the Cemetery, next to his owner’s grave, and hence why he is called Greyfriars Bobby. During this time, Bobby’s loyalty to his master became notorious in Edinburgh and people would go to the Cemetery to feed him and give him water. In 1872 Bobby died and was buried not far from John Gray’s grave so that they could finally be together. Since his death, Bobby has become a local hero and is still remembered to this day. A statue of Bobby was placed on the south side of George IV Bridge and citizens and visitors can visit his grave in Greyfriars. His dish and collar are shown at the Museum of Edinburgh and numerous books and films have been made about his life.

(Greyfriars Bobby Statue)

Then head back up the steps and explore a must-see destination on a two-day visit to Edinburgh: The Royal Mile, the main street of Edinburgh’s Old Town that connects the Castle with the Royal Palace, Holyroodhouse Palace, the Royal Family's residence when they are in Edinburgh. It is undoubtedly the most touristy street but also the most charming in all of Edinburgh, full of iconic landmarks and countless little shops.

(Royal Mile)

Within just a mile, you’ll find a wealth of attractions, starting with Makars’ Court and the Writers’ Museum (free admission, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), which is certainly a must-see in the City of Literature. The Writers’ Museum in Edinburgh houses manuscripts, portraits, and personal mementos of three great Scottish writers: Sir Walter Scott, the inventor of the modern historical novel; Robert Burns, one of the most famous figures in the history of Scottish literature; and Robert Louis Stevenson, author of the world-famous “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” The beauty of the visit continues outside the museum, in Makars’ Court, a beautiful courtyard where several plaques are displayed, engraved with some of the most famous quotes from Scotland’s most important writers.

(The Writers Museum)

 (Makars' Court)

Not far from Makars' Court, you’ll notice a narrow alleyway, one of many in the Old Town, that is, in fact, the most famous in all of Edinburgh. We’re talking, of course, about Advocate Close, a passageway built in 1544. With its narrow, steep stairs, it takes you down the hill a bit, offering a splendid view of the lower part of the city, with the Scott Monument—which we visited earlier in the day—dominating the skyline.

(Advocate Close)

Across the way stands the imposing St. Giles’ Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh. It is, in fact, the cradle of Scottish Presbyterianism, and its fame is linked to the Calvinist reformer John Knox, who served as its minister from 1560 to 1572. Inside, don’t miss the Thistle Chapel (last entry at 4:30 p.m.), built with fine wood and stone in 1911 for the Knights of the ancient and noble Order of the Thistle. Among the things to see in Edinburgh in two days, the Cathedral is an absolute must on your itinerary.

 (St Giles Cathedral)

Speaking of places of worship, just a few dozen meters from the Cathedral, a former Gothic church deconsecrated in 1952 is now home to a remarkable local craft market (10 a.m.–6 p.m., free admission), the Tron Kirk Market. Its name, Tron (which in Scottish refers to a unit of weight), is a testament to the church’s past; it was built in the 17th century right next to the site where the market was held every day.

(Tron Kirk Market)

We’re rapidly approaching the end of the “most beautiful mile in the city,” but if you really don’t want to miss any of Edinburgh’s iconic sights in two days, we highly recommend stopping first at World’s End. It is now a renowned pub, but in the city’s glorious past, when the Old Town was, in fact, enclosed within city walls, this was the exact spot where the city walls crossed the city of Edinburgh. It’s no coincidence that Netherbow Port, one of Edinburgh’s gates, was located not far from World’s End Close. In order to leave the walled city, a toll was once required, and many of the poorest people, unable to afford it, never left the Old Town. Their world, therefore, ended here. It was their “World’s End.”

 (The World's End)

The last two iconic sites on the Royal Mile are undoubtedly the Canongate Tolbooth, one of the Royal Mile’s most beloved buildings, partly due to the clock added in 1820 (it now houses the People’s Story Museum, a free museum dedicated to the people of Edinburgh over the past 300 years) and the Kirkyard, which is especially beautiful in the spring when the cherry blossoms make it truly picturesque. We would have also liked to visit the Scottish Parliament (free admission;  we recommend checking the official website: https://www.parliament.scot/visit/plan-your-visit for the opening hours), but on the day of our visit, a session was in progress, which prevented us from visiting the various chambers. If, like us, you aren’t so lucky, you can fall back on the adjacent Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence in Scotland of the British Royal Family. It was here that Mary Stuart, a few months pregnant, witnessed the murder of her secretary David Rizzio, ordered by her jealous husband, while outside you’ll find the ruins of the monastery and a garden where monks once grew food and medicinal plants. On the official website (PALACE OF HOLYROODHOUSE) you’ll find opening hours and ticket prices.

(Palace of Holyroodhouse)

It’s now late afternoon, and to to conclude in the best way, we’d like to treat ourselves to another stunning view. Yesterday we visited the iconic Arthur’s Seat; today we’re moving just a few hundred meters from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to Calton Hill and its National Monument, a spot that, according to Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, offers the best view of all of Edinburgh.

(Calton Hill - view of Arthur's Seat)

(Calton Hill)

If you’re looking for things to see in Edinburgh over two days, be sure to take the short walk up Calton Hill to admire not only the city from a prime vantage point, but also the National Monument, a sort of Parthenon, a project that was never actually completed. The panoramic view of the city and the Firth of Forth never fails to amaze both tourists and locals alike.

The ultimate one day trip itinerary in GLASGOW, the "The Dear Green Place" of Scotland

When you think of Scottish cities, the stunning city of Edinburgh immediately comes to mind, one of the most sought-after destinations for countless tourists from all over the world. But when visiting the Scottish capital, your attention often turns to another city about an hour’s drive away, Glasgow, and it’s not uncommon for visitors to spend at least a day there alongside their visit to Edinburgh (two or three days). Until just a few years ago, Glasgow was a bleak mix of poverty and unemployment, but it has since become one of Scotland’s crown jewels, ranking as the 57th most livable city in the world. A true miracle for “The Dear Green Place” (the city’s nickname, derived from the Gaelic name for Glasgow, Glaschu, adopted to promote the preservation of the urban fabric, tree planting, and environmental restoration throughout the city), one of Europe’s top ten financial hubs, as well as a capital of design and culture. The once-notorious city has transformed from an ugly duckling into a truly enjoyable place, focusing heavily on the best it has to offer, from art (there are several museums, all free of charge!), to the architecture of Ronnie Mackintosh, to beer and music.

(University of Glasgow)

 (Glasgow Necropolis)

It’s no coincidence that Glasgow is a UNESCO City of Music. And then there’s the cuisine, which is surprisingly a source of pride for a city that ranks second only to London in terms of the quality and variety of British cuisine. Local products like fish and mushrooms, as well as the legendary haggis, Scotland’s national dish (a mixture of minced sheep’s offal with onion, kidney fat, oatmeal, salt, and spices, mixed with broth and served with turnips and potatoes), and the incredible breaded and fried "Mars! (yes, you heard that right!) will make you connect with the local culture and traditions. But what can you see in Glasgow in a single day? The premise is that a single day is enough to visit the city, but you’ll have to rush around quite a bit. The best solution, in fact, is two days: you'll then have enought time to enjoy all the museums and attractions at a leisurely pace. A word of advice? Although it’s a very charming city, Glasgow can’t hold a candle to the stunning Edinburgh. For this reason, if possible, visit it before heading to the Scottish capital...

WHAT TO SEE IN GLASGOW IN ONE DAY

FROM KELVINGROVE PARK TO THE NECROPOLIS

As we mentioned, visiting Glasgow in a single day is possible, but you’ll need to get up early and start exploring the city from the crack of dawn. We’ll begin our adventure from the west (Kelvingrove Park), then spend the middle of the day near the historic center, and finish up in the east at the Necropolis. Are you ready? Then let’s begin this journey to discover “The Dear Green Place” from the West End and its green lung, Kelvingrove Park, among squirrels (there are tons of them) and statues.

(Kelvingrove Park)

Take your time exploring it before heading to the adjacent Kelvingrove Museum, the crown jewel of this part of Glasgow. The museum opens at 10 a.m. (11 a.m. on Fridays and Sundays) and admission is free: in this stunning red-sandstone building, you can admire Salvador Dalí’s Christ of St. John of the Cross, works by Botticelli, Titian, Rembrandt, Picasso, Cézanne, Matisse, and Van Gogh, as well as explore the children’s section, filled with prehistoric animals and armor.

 (Kelvingrove Museum)

From here, a five-minute walk will take you to the University of Glasgow (founded in1451), Scotland’s second-oldest university, surpassed only by the University of St. Andrews, and the fourth-oldest in the English-speaking world, housed in a Neo-Gothic building designed by architect George Gilbert Scott. The University of Glasgow is also famous for being considered a sort of “real-life Hogwarts,” thanks to its neo-Gothic architecture, beautiful cloisters, and spacious courtyards that strongly resemble the school from the Harry Potter films. Although it was not used as a filming location, its atmosphere makes it a popular destination for fans visiting Scotland.

Cross the  Kelvin river and you’ll find yourself on the small but charming Ashton Lane, the beating heart of Glasgow’s West End nightlife. On weekends, Glaswegians—the residents of Glasgow—flock to this picturesque alley, which remains the Scottish city’s best-kept secret. With its small restaurants, bars, and a historic cinema, you’ll find just about everything along Ashton Lane, which, while it’s at its best in the evening, is also thoroughly enjoyable during the day. From Ashton Lane, take the distinctive metro (it looks like a capsule!) which will take you to Glasgow’s historic center in just a few stops.

IL CENTRO DI GLASGOW, TRA MURALES E STATUE... PARTICOLARI

GLASGOW'S CITY CENTER, AMONG MURALS AND PARTICULAR STATUES

It’s lunchtime, and before venturing out to explore Glasgow’s charming historic center, we stop at Sichuan House, a typical restaurant from China’s Sichuan region, to enjoy some excellent Asian delicacies before visiting the Glasgow School of Art (1845), internationally recognized as one of Europe’s top academic institutions in the field of visual arts.

(Sichuan House)

But strolling through the historic center also means admiring the countless murals that are part of the City Center Mural Trail, a project that, for nearly 20 years now, has been “brightening up” some of Glasgow’s streets with graffiti and murals by reducing the negative visual impact of the “old” Glasgow. In short, everything here has a purpose. This includes the street art trail that takes visitors to less typical parts of the city, helping small businesses survive while also giving visibility to top-tier artists. On the official website (https://www.citycentremuraltrail.co.uk/), you can find a list of the most important murals and their locations.

 (City Center Mural Trail)

The pedestrian city center revolves around Buchanan Street and Queen Street, undoubtedly among the top sights to see in Glasgow in a day. Here you’ll find well-known and lesser-known brands, department stores, and Victorian-style buildings interspersed with decidedly more modern structures. Also worth visiting is Clyde Street, home to some of the city’s most famous murals, and the Merchant Street area, which owes its name to its history as a residential neighborhood for wealthy merchants dealing in tobacco, sugar, and tea during the second half of the 19th century. This is also where “Medieval Glasgow” originated, as evidenced by the clock tower and the Trongate Steeple. We found it completely closed for renovation work, but the crown jewel of the historic center is undoubtedly George Square, the enormous square dedicated to King George III of England (1782). When it was built, the square was essentially a muddy expanse, but then it got an important role thanks to the Georgian-style houses, hotels, the Glasgow-Edinburgh railway station, and Glasgow City Chambers.

(Glasgow city center)

Turn the corner and you can’t help but be struck by the statue of the Duke of Wellington, Glasgow’s main attraction. How can a statue be considered one of the must-see sights in Glasgow in a day and yet end up on a list of the 10 most bizarre monuments in the world? The reason lies in the orange traffic cone (though depending on the time of year, you might find something else) perched atop the Duke of Wellington’s hean, a tradition that began in the 1980s, when a drunk student climbed the statue to “honor” the duke by placing a “new crown” on it. At first, city officials tried time and again to remove the cone, but it got replaced every time. Over the years, what appeared to be an act of vandalism became a symbol of local identity.

 (Duke of Wellington)

The statue of the Duke of Wellington stands in front of the entrance to the GOMA museum (free admission), Scotland’s leading museum of contemporary art, housed in the Royal Exchange building, where stocks and commodities were bought and sold for centuries. In this museum, you’ll find works by Warhol, among others, as well as a significant section dedicated to photography.

(Goma Museum)

 THE AREA NORTHEAST OF GLASGOW

FROM THE OLDEST BUILDING TO THE BEST VIEW OF THE CITY

Due to time constraints and logistical issues (they are located too far from the city center, and we only had one day to spend in Glasgow), we decided not to visit the Burrell Collection, the world’s largest collection assembled by a single individual, Sir Burrell, a shipping magnate who collected some 8,000 objects during his lifetime and later donated them to the city, and the Science Centre, with its rounded, futuristic silhouette that houses over 300 science-related attractions, many of which are interactive. The clock's ticking and we are now nearing the end of the day. To wrap up the afternoon, we recommend taking the bus and heading northeast to visit both Provand’s Lordship and the cathedral, two iconic sites that are definitely among the must-see attractions in Glasgow in a day. Provand’s Lordship is, in fact, the oldest building in the city (1471 – free admission), and by visiting it, you can experience how the wealthier classes lived during that period.

 (Provand's Lordship)

Across the street stands Glasgow Cathedral (last admission at 4:30 p.m.), which was fortunately spared by the various wars that have ravaged the United Kingdom over the centuries. Around the 7th century, St. Mungo, now the patron saint of Glasgow, founded a small chapel here, which over the centuries has taken on its current majestic Gothic appearance. Inside the Lower Church, there is an altar under  which the saint is believed to be buried.

(Glasgow Cathedral)

But if you want to enjoy an amazing view of the cathedral itself and of all of Glasgow, walk around the cathedral and head up the hill to the Necropolis, home to a Victorian cemetery that houses the remains of some 50,000 people and over 3,500 monuments, including mausoleums, gravestones, and memorials. It’s a truly evocative place, perhaps the most evocative in all of Glasgow.

(Glasgow Necropolis)

Down the hill to the east, you’ll notice the imposing Tennent’s Brewery, one of the most famous breweries in the world. Here in Glasgow, you can visit the Tennent’s Wellpark Brewery, which boasts over 450 years of brewing tradition and award-winning beers, to learn all about the Tennent’s brand and its history. But the real gem, in our opinion, is the small Drygate Brewery, located right between the Necropolis and the Tennent’s complex. Stop by, have a beer with the locals, and—why not—wrap up your action-packed day exploring the city by staying there for dinner. You’ll find a youthful atmosphere and, if you’re lucky, live music also. Of all the places we visited on our trip between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Drygate has by far become our absolute favorite.

The ultimate four day trip itinerary in Amsterdam, the "Venice of the North" - (day 1: Dam Square, Spui Square, Begijnhof, Bloemenmarkt, Red light district, Ouede kerk, Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder, Chinese Quarter, The Waag and A'dam Lookout)

I canali, splendidi, i mulini a vento, i tulipani.

The beautiful canals, the windmills, the tulips. And then there are the museums, the history, and a timeless charm that blends with the youthful spirit of the Red Light District. No, Amsterdam isn’t like any other city; Amsterdam is one of a kind. And no conversation about Amsterdam is complete without mentioning mentioning the water and the dam that was built eight centuries ago to divert the course of the Amstel River and which effectively marked the beginning of the construction of what we now call Amsterdam. The “Venice of the North,” so named for its numerous canals (165!) stretching over 70 km, is a unique example of architecture and engineering in the world, with its colorful houses and picturesque bridges creating a truly evocative atmosphere that still todays testifies to the so-called “Golden Age,” when Amsterdam (in the 17th century) dominated the world commercially.

E no, non stiamo scherzando.

You’ll need to be patient with the weather (especially in spring and fall), because within minutes, you might actually experience all four seasons. And no, we’re not kidding. At the end of March, we experienced snow, rain, and sunshine in less than an hour... But if you can accept this changeable weather, then you’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful city, which we’ll help you explore with our 4-day guide to Amsterdam.

 GETTING AROUND AMSTERDAM

As always happens in the big cities, the best way to get around is by public transportation, which is truly efficient in the Netherlands. The metro, trams, buses, and ferries will allow you to travel from one place to another, and we recommend getting a 4-day pass—that’s all you’ll need to fully enjoy the city of Amsterdam. We found a great deal (March 2026) on the Getyourguide website, which is significantly cheaper than the official site (https://gvb.nl/bezoek-amsterdam/informazioni-turistiche-italiano). Keep in mind that the route from Schiphol Airport to the city center isn’t included: you’ll need a separate ticket, which we found—also at a discounted price—on the “Tiqets” app. However, it’s not necessary to purchase it in advance since the trains run very frequently.

WHAT TO SEE IN AMSTERDAM IN 4 DAYS

DAY 1 - FROM DAM SQUARE TO THE STUNNING VIEW FROM A'DAM LOOKOUT

What to see in Amsterdam in 4 days? First of all, we must say that four—or even better, five—days are ideal for visiting the “Venice of the North” and enjoying both the many museums the city offers and taking short excursions to the surrounding areas, including, above all, the picturesque Keukenhof, the world’s most famous tulip park. But we must simply begin our adventure at the place where the city of Amsterdam essentially eas born: the bustling Dam Square, one of the most popular squares in all of Europe, thanks to its many shops, bars, and restaurants, but also and above all, because of the majestic Royal Palace and the nearby Nieuwe Kerk. In the center of the huge square stands an obelisk over 20 meters tall dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives during World War II. Dam Square, which takes its name from the dam built in 1270 on the Amstel River, has always been the main face of the city of Amsterdam: here, in fact, over the course of eight centuries, markets, executions, uprisings, and much more have taken place, all in front of the majestic Royal Palace, whose interiors are particularly elegant. Above all, the Reception Hall, the place where Dutch monarchs receive foreign dignitaries and celebrate the most important events.

 (Dam Square)

One tram stop away (from Dam to Rokin) is the second square, Spui, which is reachable also by walk (few hundreds meters). It is made of colorful houses, charming cafés, shops, and markets. It’s cozy and far less famous than the previous one.

(Spui)

In one of the narrow side streets, you’ll notice the Begijnhof, the historic convent courtyard accessible through a gate from Spui Square. A true refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city, it features a courtyard surrounded by historic houses (at number 34 you’ll find the oldest in all of Amsterdam), gardens, and the beautiful Gothic Engelse Kerk. This complex was once home to the Beguines, a Catholic sisterhood of women who lived in communities dedicated to prayer.

(Begijnhof)

Continue south for 400 meters and you’ll reach one of the highlights of Amsterdam’s historic center: the Bloemenmarkt, Amsterdam’s famous flower market, located along the picturesque banks of the Singel canal, one of the most beautiful in this part of the city. What was once a floating market along the canal is now a mecca for flower lovers (and tulip enthusiasts in particular), a veritable mosaic of colors and scents that is sure to enchant you...

(Bloemenmarkt)

Let’s head north (800 meters) and venture into one of Amsterdam’s most iconic neighborhoods: the Red Light District, where, in an evocative labyrinth of streets and alleys, you’ll find history and modernity, the “forbidden,” and culture. Although it’s a neighborhood best experienced in the evening (and at night), even during the day the Red Light District, whose name comes from the red neon lights that illuminate the streets in the dark, is decidedly lively and will let you experience a different side of Amsterdam, one that’s no less fascinating.

(Red Light District)

While in the neighborhood, don’t miss the majestic Oude Kerk (Old Church), a 12th-century Gothic church considered the oldest building in Amsterdam (13th century). From the 70-meter-high bell tower, you can enjoy a splendid view of the city, but its crowning glory is undoubtedly the carillon, which, thanks to its 47 bells, has been playing beautiful melodies every fifteen minutes for over 300 years.

(Oude Kerk)

Just a short walk from the Oude Kerk, don’t miss one of the most fascinating museums in all of Amsterdam: the Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder, or Church of Our Lord in the Attic (opening hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., admission: 18 euros). The name says it all, because this church was built in the attic of a house and served as a clandestine place of worship during the 17th century, when Catholicism was banned during the Dutch Reformation. It is one of the most intriguing examples of clandestine churches, or “schuilkerk,” in the entire Netherlands, and served its purpose until 1888, when, following the opening of St. Nicholas Basilica, Amsterdam’s main Catholic church, it was converted into a museum, the second oldest after the Rijksmuseum.

If you didn’t know that there’s a church hidden in the attic of this house, well… nothing here suggests the presence of a religious building. Certainly not the first part of the museum tour (tickets), which develops inside a large 17th-century house, exceptionally well-preserved and overlooking the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal, amid narrow corridors, cramped staircases, and domestic spaces such as kitchens, bedrooms, and living rooms decorated in the style of the era. The church, built on the upper floors of the house, was commissioned by the wealthy Catholic merchant Jan Hartman and inaugurated in 1663. At that time, Catholics were forbidden from professing their faith in public, and both Catholic churches and monasteries were confiscated and used for Protestant worship. Catholics have to look for alternatives and celebrate Mass in hidden house churches. After all, the principle of freedom of conscience applies in the Republic of the Netherlands. Behind the front door, everyone is allowed to think and believe what they want. This creates an exceptional climate of tolerance for the time, in which different religious population groups can live together in the city.

Once you cross the canal, you’ll reach the lively Chinatown, whose history dates back to the 12th century, when Amsterdam effectively became a major commercial hub and, as a direct result, attracted immigrants from all over the world, including, of course, China. Even today, more than 300 years later, the neighborhood retains its distinctive architecture, featuring narrow streets lined with shops and restaurants, as well as several temples, including the famous Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple, the largest Chinese-style Buddhist temple in Europe, built by members of a Buddhist order from Taiwan.

 (Chinatown - Amsterdam)

Before leaving the historic center (as you may have guessed, all the places we visited today were very close to one another), there’s still one neighborhood to explore: the medieval Nieuwmarkt district, home to one of the oldest buildings in all of Amsterdam, The Waag. What was once (in the 15th century) the city’s actual gateway and part of the ancient medieval walls is now (after several transformations) one of the city’s most famous café-restaurants.

 (The Waag)

It’s now late afternoon, and to conclude this first day in the best possible way, we head to the beautiful Amsterdam Centraal Station (opened way back in 1889), whose façade reflects the grandeur and ambition of Amsterdam’s Golden Age. We walk through it and get to the pier, where free boat rides lead to other side of the city, Amsterdam-Noord. We’re here because we’re about to head up to the A’Dam Lookout (tickets), the iconic observatory located at the top of the A’DAM Tower in Amsterdam’s northern district, which offers a breathtaking view of the city, the harbor, the canals, and the polder landscape.

(A'Dam Lookout)

This imposing 100-meter-tall structure offers a unique bird’s-eye view of the city, but it’s not your typical observation deck. In addition to the unparalleled 360-degree view of Amsterdam and the surrounding towns, there’s much more to discover at the top of this building, which can be reached via a beautiful elevator filled with color and music. Depending on the ticket you’ve purchased, you can also ride the virtual roller coaster of the Amsterdam VR Rollercoaster Ride and, above all, experience the adrenaline rush of Over the Edge, simply the highest swing in Europe. The ticket that includes only the observation deck visit (with an audio guide) costs 16 euros, while the “complete” ticket (observation deck, rollercoaster, and Over The Edge) costs 29.50 euros. Among the things to do in Amsterdam in four days, a visit to the top of the A’Dam Lookout is an absolute must!

Decisamente consigliato...

Where to have dinner in Amsterdam? Take advantage of the fact that you’re ending the first day in Amsterdam-Noord and, if you like, have dinner in this area. We chose Van der Werf, but to get there you’ll need to head back to Central Station and take a different (free of charge) ferry to NDSM-werf. The atmosphere at this bar-restaurant (which is great for both happy hour and after-dinner drinks) is very youthful, and the menu is small but of excellent quality. Highly recommended...
