Stati Uniti, dove mangiare? La nostra "top ten"

Prima di lasciare gli Stati Uniti (almeno per un po') e raccontare gli altri trip, volevamo chiudere con il... cibo, che da sempre è parte importante, se non addirittura principale, dei nostri viaggi. Siamo o no quelli che, se possono, finiscono a mangiare nei posti che Adam Richman visita in "Man vs Food"? Sì, e allora non potevamo non completare i nostri racconti sugli Stati Uniti con la nostra "top ten". Ah, ovviamente parliamo di catene e non di singoli ristoranti per due motivi: il primo, principale, è che deve essere un locale accessibile a tutti i viaggiatori in giro per gli Usa, secondo ma non meno importante, perchè a livello economico decisamente più vantaggioso rispetto ad un "normale" ristorante.

Dimenticatevi la decina (forse meno?) di catene filo-americane che troviamo in Italia, là ce ne sono centinaia, forse migliaia e per l'americano medio uscire a cena spesso e volentieri significa finire lì, che sia un fast food o una catena di ristoranti. Noi, ovviamente non li abbiamo provati tutti (anzi...) e per questo la nostra top ten non potrà essere completa, ma farà riferimento ovviamente solamente ai locali in cui siamo stati, tralasciando dunque i vari Mc Donald's, Burger King (li abbiamo anche qui...), The Cheesecake Factory, Ruby Tuesday, Texas Roadhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings, Denny's, Chili's, Applebee's e moltissimi altri ancora che proveremo, speriamo, nei prossimi trip. Ah ovviamente la lista comprende colazione, pranzo e cena e fa parte del "nostro personalissimo cartellino". Liberi di dissentire (anche perchè noterete molte catene del nord est, dove abbiamo passato molto tempo) ed eventualmente di commentare in fondo all'articolo, fornendo il vostro contribuito alla causa.

Before leaving the United States (at least for a while) and talk about the other trips, we want to close with ... food, which has always been an important part, if not the main, of our travels. Are we or not the man vs food followers?  Yes, and then we are forced to complete our stories about the U.S. with our restaurants "top ten". Of course we talk of chains for two reasons: first, main, is that it must be a place accessible to all travelers around the United States, second but no less important, because chain are cheaper rather than a "normal" restaurant.

Forget about the ten (maybe less?) chain-restaurants american style we have in Italy. Into the United States there are hundreds, perhaps thousands chain-restaurants:  for the average American to go out to dinner often means ended there , it's a fast food chain or a of restaurants. We haven't tried al of them and this is why our top ten list may not be complete, of course, but will refer only to the places where we have been, then ignoring  McDonald's, Burger King, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruby Tuesday, Texas Roadhouse , Buffalo Wild Wings, Denny's, Chili's , Applebee's and many others who will hopefully try in the next trip . Of course, the list includes breakfast, lunch and dinner and is part of "our very own taste" Free to disagree (because you will notice many chains belong to the northeast of the Us, where we spent a lot of time ) and eventually to comment at the bottom of the article, providing your contribution to the cause.

1) TGI Friday's

"In here it's always friday". Già dallo slogan ("qui è sempre venerdì) e da quel TGI che non è altro che "Thank god is friday" s'intuisce che lo spirito del locale è molto giovanile. Spesso troverete 5-6 tv accese su vari eventi sportivi (ma non è una novità negli Stati Uniti) e dovrete armarvi di tanta pazienza quando la hostess vi consegnerà una sorta di telecomando che vibrerà quando finalmente il tavolo che, affamato, aspetti, si è liberato. Sì, non è un caso, infatti, che il TGI in cui vi troviate sia pieno...

"In here it's always friday". The slogan and what TGI means (thanks god it's friday) say all about TGI Friday's. The spirit of the place is very youthful. Often you will find 5-6 televisions that are broadcasting various sport events and you will have to arm yourself with patience when the hostess gives you some sort of remote control that will vibrate when finally the table is ready.

La "steak" alla salsa al Jack Daniels è il piatto più gustoso, ma qui potrete trovare di tutto. Un cocktail che accompagna la cena invece della solita birra e, soprattutto, degli ottimi desserts. Per cui, se potete, arrivate con spazio alla fine della cena.

Non siamo riusciti a trovare le "locations", ma essendoci Tgi Friday's anche in Europa dovrebbe significare che tutti gli Stati Uniti siano coperti.

The steak with the Jack Daniels sauce is the prettiest dish, but here you can find everything. A cocktail that accompanies dinner instead of the usual beer and, above all, excellent desserts. So, if you can, find some space in your stomach at the end of the dinner. 

We could not find the "locations", but if you can find Tgi Friday's in Europe should mean that all the Uniteds States are covered.

2) SHAKE SHACK

Alzi la mano chi, a due passi dalla 5th avenue di New York, non ha assaggiato il "mitico" panino di Shake Shack? Probabilmente "quel panino" entrerà nella vostra "top 3" di sempre. Shacke Shack significa mangiare con 4.50 dollari un panino (più patatine fritte e coca) indimenticabile. New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, Washington D.C. e New Yersey sono gli stati americani che possono vantare Shake Shack nel loro territorio, in Europa invece potrete trovarlo in moltissime città del medio oriente (Dubai su tutte) e poi Londra, Istanbul e Mosca. Ci abbiam provato a richiedere il franchising per l'Italia, ma "per ora non è nostra intenzione esplorare il mercato italiano" è stata la risposta. Come per TGI Friday's, inconcepibile che qui in Italia non ci sia.

Raise your hand if you haven't  tasted the "mythical" Shake Shack burger, in New York, few steps far from the 5th avenue? Probably that burger will go into your "top 3" of all time. Shacke Shack means eating a burger with $ 4.50 (plus fries and coke), an unforgettable experience. New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, Washington, D.C. and New Yersey are the american states that are offering Shake Shack in their territory: in Europe, however, you can find it in many cities of the Middle East (Dubai in particular) and then London, Istanbul and Moscow. We have tried to get the franchise for Italy, but "now it is not our intention to explore the Italian market" was the answer.

3) BUBBA GUMP

Run, Forrest, Run! Chi ha visto Forrest Gump sicuramente un salto da Bubba Gump prima o poi lo vorrà fare. Una catena del tutto particolare, specchio fedele del film e ristorante unico nel suo genere. Per chiamare il cameriere al tavole niente "excuse me", ma occorre girare il cartello posizionato sul tavolo in "stop Forrest stop"... e poi tanto, tanto pesce di qualità. Ed è proprio per questo che, rispetto agli altri che citeremo, un po' più costosetto. 

Copre buona parte degli Stati Uniti (qui per le locations) e anche buona parte dell'est asiatico (Giappone, Cina e Indonesia su tutte) e Messico.

Run, Forrest, Run! Anyone who has seen the movie Forrest Gump definitely is forced to sto at Bubba Gump sooner or later. A chain completely unique, a true reflection of the movie and a unique restaurant. To call the waiter at the tables you don't have to say "excuse me", but you need to turn the sign placed on the table in "Stop Forrest Stop" ... and then lots and lots of quality fish. And it is precisely for this reason that, compared to the other restaurants we are talking about, it's more expensive.

It covers much of the United States (here for locations), and a large part of East Asia (Japan, China and Indonesia in particular) and Mexico.

4) TACO BELL

Burger King? Mc Donald? Noooooo, il miglior fast food a stelle e strisce è TACO BELL, il preferito, e di gran lunga, da Marco. Ne abbiamo parlato poco durante i racconti, ma ci siamo fermati spesso per un taco. Non è un caso che non abbiamo foto che riguardino Taco Bell: appena entriamo pensiamo a sbranare quello che abbiamo scelto.

Burger King? Mc Donald? Noooooo, the best fast food in the US is TACO BELL, Marco's favourite. We have talked about it not so much during the stories, but we stopped often for a taco. It is not an accident that we don't have pictures about Taco Bell: when we are there in our mind there is only "eat tacosssssssss".

Taco Bell significa Messico e più specificatamente cucina Tex Mex. E non fatevi ingannare, non è assolutamente per mangioni: anzi, un taco, magari light, a pranzo e siete pronti per ripartire senza quella sensazione di sonno che spesso i fast food ti "regalano". Taco Bell conta 6.500 locali in giro per gli Stati Uniti, 300 in Canada e parecchi in giro per il mondo (Sud America soprattutto). Anche qui manca l'Italia, purtroppo.

Taco Bell means Mexico and more specifically Tex Mex cuisine. And don't be fooled, is not only for big-eater: a taco, maybe light, at lunch, and you're ready to go without that feeling of "i want to sleep now!" that often fast foods give to you. Taco Bell has 6,500 clubs around the United States, 300 in Canada and several around the world (mainly South America). Also here Italy isn't involved, unfortunately.

5) CUPCAKE CHARLIE

"Life is short... eat a cupcake". La vita è breve... mangia un cupcake. I migliori che abbiamo mai assaggiato, enormi e di svariati gusti. L'unica pecca? Questa catena la si può trovare solamente in New England, quella zona a nord degli Stati Uniti che ha come città maggiormente riconosciuta Boston. Se capitate da quelle parti (Mashpee in Massachusetts, Plymouth in Massachusetts, Foxboro in Massachusetts e Newport in Rhode Island) fermatevi da Charlie e gustatevi uno dei suoi meravigliosi cupcake. Quelli al limone sono probabilmente i più buoni.

"Life is short ... eat a cupcake." The best cupcake we have ever tasted, huge and varied tastes. The only problem? Cupcake Charlie can be found only in New England, the area in the north of the United States which has the most recognized city Boston. If you are in this area (Mashpee-Massachusetts, Plymouth-Massachusetts, Foxboro-Massachusetts, and Newport-Rhode Island) stop at Cupcake Charlie and enjoy one of his wonderful cupcake. The lemon one is probably the best.

6 ) DUNKIN' DONUTS

Per come la vediamo noi, "chi vuole wifi gratis va da Starbucks, chi vuole fare colazione come si deve con una ciambella buonissima ed un "dunkaccino", quelli cool insomma, vanno da Dunkin' Donuts.

Our thinking is: who wants to get free Wifi goes to Starbucks, who wants to have breakfast as it should be, qith a donut and a delicious Dunkaccino and be.. cool, goes to Dunkin' Donuts.

Noi non siamo neppure così tanto dispiaciuti quando la colazione non è compresa nell'hotel/motel in cui abbiamo dormito la notte precedente, a patto ovviamente che nelle vicinanze ci sia Dunkin' Donuts. Invece del solito anonimo muffin, la super ciambella (e ce ne sono davvero di tutti i tipi) con il Dunkaccino e via per la città.

We aren't disappointed if breakfast isn't included in the hotel where we are staying. But only if there is a Dunkin' Donuts around us. Instead of the boring muffin offered by the hotel/motel, the amazing donut and the Dunkaccino.

Come si intuisce dall'immagine qui sotto (i puntini gialli), Dunkin' Donuts è sì molto diffuso negli Stati Uniti, ma è soprattutto l'est del paese (e soprattutto il nord-est, dove è nato) ad esserne fornito.

As you can see in the picture, Dunkin' Donuts is widespread in the United States, but you can find it mainly the east of the country (and especially the north-east, where he was born).

7) NINETY NINE RESTAURANT

Nel rapporto qualità-prezzo è sicuramente tra i migliori. Non in tutti i ristoranti ti capita di cenare con un piatto a 9.99, magari a base di Angus come piace tanto a Marco... a cui han regalato una clam chouder (la tipica zuppa del New England) perchè il suo Angus era in ritardo di due minuti-due.
O dove i bambini a pranzo mangiano gratis se i red-soks il giorno prima hanno vinto!

Huge value here. Not at all the restaurants can offer Angus with 9.99 dollars. For what you pay here (not so much), you can find good dishes and waitresses are very kind. When marco's dish was late (2 or 3 minutes, not more), they offered him a Clam Chouder! 
Or where kids eat free if the day before red-soks won the match!

Anche qui però l'area si restringe, purtroppo, al nord est degli Stati Uniti. Una delle sue caratteristiche sono le "99 ragioni per cui lo amerete": tutte e 99 le troverete scritte all'interno del ristorante.

You can find the "99 restaurants" in the northeast of the United States. The "99 reasons why you will love it" are amazing. You will find all the 99 reasons inside the restaurant.

8) KFC Kentucky Fried Chicken

E' il fratellino, o fratellone di Taco Bell poichè hanno in comune la proprietà. Anzi, spesso li troverete insieme. Però KFC è molto più americano, con il cestello pieno di alette di pollo (tanto per citare un esempio) è un'esperienza da provare. Ovviamente qui comanda il pollo e potrete ordinarlo davvero in ogni modo.

KFC is the Taco Bell's little brother (or maybe the big brother). They have the ownership in common, In fact, often, you can find them together. But KFC is much more American, with the basket full of chicken wings (just to cite one example). Obviously here chicken is dominat and you can order it really in any way.

9) JAMBA JUICE

Quando sei di corsa oppure il caldo sta avendo la meglio, un frullato da Jamba Juice è il top. Frullati normali e light, con ogni tipo di frutta... un must soprattutto per le ragazze. Jamba Juice lo si può trovare in 20 stati (qui per le locations e, ovviamente, nelle città più importanti)

When you are in a hurry or maybe it's really hot outside, Jamba Juice's smoothie is the best. Normal, light... and with every kind of fruit... a "must" especially for women. You can find Jamba Juice in 20 states (here for the locations).

10) SUBWAY

E' l'ancora di salvataggio. Già, quando sei in difficoltà, magari in una città sperduta in mezzo al deserto o nelle riserve indiane, sai che lui ti salverà. Parliamo di Subway, il fast food più diffuso (ha di recente superato Mc Donald e Burger King) negli interi Stati Uniti. Numeri da record per Subway, che più volte ci è venuto incontro quando la sera, in certe parti del paese, trovi tutto chiuso. Si sta espandendo a macchia d'olio anche in Europa (ma ovviamente cala e di molto la qualità), perchè permette per la prima volta al cliente non solo di scegliersi il pane, ma anche gli ingredienti da inserire. In soldoni, ognuno si fa il panino che vuole e... solitamente tale panino è anche parecchio grande!

Let's talk about Subway, the most popular fast food in the entire United States. Record numbers for Subway, that saved us several times in the evening when, in certain parts of the country, all the restaurants were closed. You can find it also in Europe (but obviously quality is different): the nicest thing is that allows the customer to choose not only bread, but also the ingredients. Everyone makes the sandwich he wants and usually ... this sandwich is also quite big!

La Top Ten sarebbe finita qui, ma c'è un ma... Ci sarà la volta che il vostro aereo atterrerà in tarda serata o magari di notte, oppure che vi verrà qualche particolare voglia (birra, hot dog, patatine, cioccolato...) in orari o zone in cui è complicato trovare qualcosa di aperto. Quel giorno vi ricorderete del mitico 7Eleven...

The Top Ten would end here, but...there is a but ... There will be a time when your plane will land  late in the evening or even at night, or that there will be some particular desire (beer, hot dogs, chips, chocolate. ..) in a time or areas where it is difficult to find something open. That day you will remember the legendary 7Eleven...

... il più delle volte sarà vicino ad una pompa di benzina ed avrà qualche indiano/indiana (d'Asia però, non d'America) alla cassa che capirà l'inglese meno di voi (tra l'altro in India è diffusissimo, forse è questo il motivo...) ma lì troverete quello che cercate. Il minimarket aperto il più delle volte 24 ore su 24 che finirete per apprezzare, anche soltanto se avrete bisogno di una bottiglietta di acqua o di una dottor pepper.

Most of the times you will find it close to a petrol pump and will have Indians (Asians, not americans) at the cash desk and they will understand English worse than you, but at 7Eleven you will find what you are looking for. The most convenient store most of the time is open 24 hours: you will go there even if you're only looking for a small bottle of water or a Dr. Pepper.
