Christmas time in Athens (day 1-2)

Il solito volo trovato ampiamente sotto i 100 euro e l'altrettanto solito hotel trovato ad un prezzo economico ci ha spinto lo scorso periodo natalizio a visitare una delle città più affascinanti del mondo, Atene. No, non è la "nostra" città, troppa storia e troppa cultura per due come noi che... aspettano la sera per cenare con le specialità del posto, ma una volta nella vita bisogna andarci. Per forza. Con poco più di 200 euro a testa di budget (compreso il volo) abbiamo speso cinque giorni (dal 26 al 30 dicembre), di cui tre interi, nella capitale greca...

The flight found well below the 100 euros and the  hotel found at an affordable price has pushed us last Christmas time to visit one of the most fascinating cities in the world, Athens. No, it is not "our" city, too much history and too much culture for two of us (we wait for the evening to dine with local specialties...), but once in life you have to go there. With a budget of 200 euros each (including flight) we spent five days (December 26 to 30) in the Greek capital ... 

Arrivati in hotel (Central Athens Hotel, 4 notti a 319 euro) il "regalo" inaspettato ed ancor più bello è la vista dell'Acropoli dal bar-terrazza.

At the hotel (Central Athens Hotel, 4 nights  for 319 €), the "gift" unexpected and even more beautiful is the view of the Acropolis from the terrace bar. 

Il tè delle 5 ed il tramonto che avvolge l'Acropoli diventeranno tappa fissa anche nei successivi tre giorni.

The 5 o'clock tea and the sunset surrounds the Acropolis become a "must" of the next three days. 

Tra una veloce lettura delle varie mappe/cartine e tutto quello che "fa viaggio" è già ora di cena. Andiamo in esplorazione, ben consci che ad attenderci nel centro di Atene (zona Monastiraki) ci sarà solamente l'imbarazzo della scelta, con i consueti "butta dentro" che proveranno di tutto per convincerti. Noi optiamo per un localino caratteristico con musica live subito dopo aver appurato che, un po' come ai quartieri latini di Parigi, si fa a gara a far pagare di meno...

Among a quick reading of the various maps and all that "makes the trip" is already time for dinner. Let's go exploring, knowing that in the center of Athens (Monastiraki area) there will be a lot of restaurants that are waiting for us, with the usual man who will try to convince you to come in. We opt for a typical restaurant with live music: as in the Latin Quarter in Paris, is very cheap.

No, stavolta l'Ale il "sirtaki" non lo ballerà, è troppo impegnata a sbranare tutto ciò che aspettavamo di mangiare da più di due anni: tutto ciò che riguarda le olive, la moussaka...

How it is going to end is so predictable...

Sì, lo sappiamo, la stiamo facendo lunga... già, ma il giorno successivo ha diluviato e, di cose da raccontare non ce ne sono poi tantissime. Avremmo voluto cominciare a visitare la città, ma la pioggia ci ha "forzati" in un lungo tragitto in metro (la più bella che abbiamo mai visto) per dirigersi in immenso centro commerciale nei pressi del centro olimpico greco (per intenderci, zona O.A.K.A., luogo che gli appassionati di basket europeo riconosceranno...).

Yes, we know it, we are waisting time... but the day after it will rain all day long and we don't have so much things to tell. We want to start exploring the city, but the rain "forces" us to take the subway (one of the best in the world) and stop in a huge mall near the Olympic greek center.

Sì, gli appassionati di storia, arte e cultura dovranno pazientare ed aspettare il giorno successivo. I "big eater", come noi, sono invece accontentati nuovamente perchè... è già sera...

Yes, lovers of history, art and culture must be patient and wait for the next day. The "big eater", like us, are satisfied because ... it's already evening ... 

e siamo pronti per innamorarci del souvlaki bar (uno dei tanti posti in cui cenare del centro di Atene), locale dove ceneremo due delle quattro sere in cui siamo rimasti nella città greca.

Più che mangiare tutto, mangiamo di tutto... ci ricordiamo solo di un qualcosa che terminava con "..souvlaki pork": a Marco è bastato leggere questo nel menù.

More than just eat everything, it's eat every kind of greek food!!  We remember only something that ended with "pork souvlaki .." For Marco it  was enough...

La ciliegina sono i soli 20 euro spesi per una cena interminabile. Fenomenale.

Ecco, se magari vi starete chiedendo se i prezzi sono così bassi per la crisi la risposta è "no", è un fatto isolato. Il governo ha, infatti, imposto che i prezzi debbano restare alti. Fare shopping non è affatto conveniente e, a proposito di crisi, vogliamo chiarire subito una cosa importante. Un turista che si affaccia ad Atene dirà la stessa cosa di un turista che arriva a Roma. "Dov'è la crisi? Mi pare tutto normale qui". Lo abbiamo pensato e detto anche noi, perchè non sapevamo se,proprio dove ora c'è il souvlaki bar, magari fino a tre mesi prima ci fosse un alimentari. Essere in "crisi economica", come lo siamo noi, è un conto, diventare un paese da terzo mondo è un altro. Atene è sempre Atene e la Grecia è sempre la Grecia. Uno dei posti più incantevoli al mondo.

If you're maybe wondering if the prices are so low because of the crisis, the answer is "no", it is an isolated case. The government has, in fact, dictated that prices should remain high. Going shopping is not cheap and, talking about crisis, we want to say an important thing. A tourist that goes to Athens says the same thing as a tourist says in Rome. "Where is the crisis? It seems quite normal to me here." We thought and said it when we arrived in Athens, maybe because we did not know if, just where now there is the souvlaki bar, maybe up to three months before there was a bakery.... Being in "economic crisis", as we are, does not mean becoming a third-world country. Athens is always Athens and Greece is still Greece. One of the most enchanting places in the world.

Christmas time in Athens (day 3)

Pioviggina, ma oggi non ci ferma nessuno. Ci sono tante cose da vedere. Da piazza Syntagma parte il nostro tour che ci porterà (a piedi) a raggiungere le principali attrazioni di Atene.

It's drizzling, but today nobody can stop us. There are so many things to see. From Syntagma square our tour starts and will take us (by walk) to the main attractions of Athens. 

L'esordio è con il Tempio di Zeus, all'epoca greca il più grande al mondo.

The first thing we see is the Temple of Zeus, in Greek times the largest in the world. 

Attraversata la Plaka, uno dei quartieri più affascinanti dell'intera città, arriviamo ai piedi dell'Acropoli, la vera grande meta della spedizione. Fortunatamente la pioggia ha cessato di scendere e possiamo affrontare il tortuoso sentiero che ci porterà in cima (durata 15 minuti).

Across the Plaka district, one of the most fascinating of the whole city, we arrive at the bottom of the Acropolis, the truly great destination of the trip. Fortunately it's not raining anymore, and we can deal with the tortuous path that will lead us to the top (duration 15 minutes).

Da quassù si domina l'intera città: riusciamo anche a scorgere il luogo dove eravamo solamente una mezz'oretta prima, ovvero il tempio di Zeus.

From here you can see the entire city: we can also see the place where we were only half an hour before, the temple of Zeus. 

Anche il Partenone, seppur in fase di restauro, si lascia guardare. Parliamo, recita wikipedia, del tempio più famoso dell'intera grecia e lodato come la migliore realizzazione dell'architettura greca e classica. Il Partenone è inoltre simbolo duraturo dell'antica grecia e della democrazia ateniese e rappresenta uno dei più grandi monumenti culturali al mondo. Dovrebbe bastare...

The Parthenon, even "work in progress", is amazing. Let's talk, says wikipedia, about the most famous temple in the whole Greece and praised as the best achievement of Greek architecture and classical. The Parthenon is also enduring symbol of ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy and is one of the greatest cultural monuments in the world. That should be enough ... 

La giornata è intensa. Dopo aver attraversato l'Agorà con le sue rovine (andrebbero spese almeno un paio d'ore qui, ma noi non ci soffermiamo troppo...) e, dopo una breve sosta da Starbucks (sempre utile quando cerchiamo il wifi) facciamo ritorno in piazza Syntagma, ovvero da dove avevamo cominciato la nostra giornata. Proprio a due passi dalla piazza più importante dell'intera atene c'è un bellissimo parco, subito dietro il parlamento. Parliamo del Zappeion Park, che ci regala una mezz'oretta buona di riposo dopo le lunghe camminate della mattinata.

The day is full. After going through the Agora with its ruins (a couple of hours should been spent  here, but we are fhave a lot of things to see...) and, after a quick stop at Starbucks (always useful when we are looking for free wifi) we return to the Syntagma Square, where our day started. Just a few steps from the most important square of the entire city, there is a beautiful park, just behind the parliament. Let's talk about Zappeion Park, which gives us a good half hour of rest after the long walks in the morning.

Appena usciti dal parco (dalla parte opposta piazza Syntagma) riusciamo, a sorpresa, ad assistere anche al cambio della guardia...

Just outside the park (the opposite side of Syntagma Square) we, surprisingly, also see the changing of the guard ... 

Finita? Macchè, l'interminabile secondo giorno deve ancora riservarci il pezzo pregiato, lo "Stadio Panathinaiko" (o "Kallimarmaron")...

Poi, ovviamente, noi siamo particolari: stiamo un quarto d'ora all'Agorà e più di due ore allo stadio...

Of course, we are weird: we spent 15 minutes at the Agora and more than two hours at the stadium...

Staremmo anche per uscire quando scopriamo un tunnel che crediamo porti a quelli che una volta erano gli spogliatoi. Ora sono luogo di culto. Assoluto. Già, perchè lì giacciono tutte le fiaccole di tutte i giochi olimpici, estivi ed invernali.

While we are thinking that the tour is going to finish, we find a tunnel that leads to a place that we think once was the changing room. Now it's a place of worship. Absolute. Yes, because there lie all the torches of all the Olympic Games, both summer and winter.

Christmas Time in Athens (day 4)

Ultimo giorno pieno ad Atene e, come sempre succede nei nostri viaggi, è il momento in cui ci togliamo qualche sfizio. L'idea è quella di andare al Pireo e, se ci sarà la possibilità, visitare una delle isolette raggiungibili dal porto di Atene. Prendiamo la bellissima (ristrutturata per le Olimpiadi del 2004) metro ateniese e raggiungiamo il Pireo. Le persone sono molto diverse, più "sgamate" per farla facile, e Marco capisce finalmente perchè tra Panathinakos, la squadra della città, e Olympiacos, la squadra del Pireo, ci sia così tanta rivalità. Tra Atene città e Pireo c'è tanta, tantissima differenza.

Last full day in Athens and, as always happens in our travels, it is time to do something we particularly like. Our idea is to go to Piraeus and, if there is a chance, visit one of the islands not far from Athens. We take the beautiful subway (renovated for the 2004 Olympics) and reach the Piraeus. The people are very different, smarter, and finally Marco understands why and there is so much rivalry between Panathinaikos and Olympiacos. Between Athens downtown and Piraeus there is lots and lots of difference.

Davanti a un caffè e solamente dopo aver preso un pizzico di confidenza con il posto, decidiamo che "l'escursione s'ha da fare". Saliamo su un velocissimo ferry che ci porterà nel giro di un'oretta ad Egina.

In front of a coffee and only after taking a bit of a feeling, we decide to do the excursion to the island. We take a fast ferry that will take us in a matter of an hour to Aegina. 

Sarà anche dicembre, ma appena sbarchiamo capiamo immediatamente che il giubbetto non ci servirà. Uno spettacolo la temperatura!

Ok it's december, but as soon as we arrive in Aegina we immediately realize that we don't need the jacket. Amazing temperature.

L'isoletta è davvero caratteristica e piena di turisti che immaginiamo la vivano 365 giorni all'anno.

The island is really quaint and full of tourists even in december.

Pranziamo con una mega insalata greca a due passi dal mare...

e giriamo per i negozietti, in attesa che il nostro ferry torni a prenderci.

Tornati in città optiamo per un "come back" al "nostro" Souvlaki Bar per un gyros, l'ultimo della spedizione.

Back in town we opt for a come back to "our" Souvlaki Bar for a gyros, the last one.

Ma come spesso accade le cose ci sfuggiranno di mano e saremo allora costretti ad una lunga camminata per le vie di Atene con l'obiettivo di smaltire la cena.

But as often happens, things get out of hand and then we are forced into a long walk through the streets of Athens, with the aim of disposing dinner. 

Anche qui però "bene ma non benissimo" come si dice in questi casi. "Dai, è l'ultima sera, facciamo il giro intorno all'Acropoli" è la brillante idea dell'Ale... terribile ovviamente. Facciamo un Monastiraki-Plaka-giro intorno all'Acropoli e rientro a Monastiraki che definire interminabile è quasi riduttivo.

Even here, however, "good but not great" as people say in these cases. "Come on, it's the last night, we should walk around the Acropolis" is the brilliant ​​Ale's idea ... obviously a terrible idea. A tour around Monastiraki-Plaka-Acropolis and Monastiraki again...

E siamo ovviamente talmente pieni per fermarci in uno dei tanti pub all'aperto che caratterizzano la zona più viva della città. Rimediamo allora con i negozi, alcuni davvero "weird"...

And we are obviously so full to stop at one of the many outdoor pub that characterize the liveliest area of ​​the city. Then we stop at the shops, some really "weird" ... 

LE CONCLUSIONI
Di cose da dire ce ne sono tante. Innanzitutto che Atene non è economicamente impegnativa, nè a livello di Hotel, nè a livello di ristoranti (lo shopping invece lo è). Un paio di giorni sono abbastanza per visitare la città, poi ovviamente molto dipende da quanto alto sia il vostro interesse per la storia di Atene e tutto quello che può offrire. Ad esempio, per quanto riguarda noi, temevamo di pagare a caro prezzo il giorno "perso" causa pioggia, invece siamo anche riusciti ad effettuare l'escursione ad Egina...Ah, può anche non essere la miglior città per shopping e divertimento "serale-notturno", ma almeno una volta nella vita da Atene bisogna passarci...

CONCLUSIONS
There are many things to say. First of all, Athens is not economically demanding. A couple of days are enough to visit the city, then of course it depends on how high is your interest in the history of Athens and all the things it has to offer. For example, as for us, we were afraid to pay a high price for the day "lost" due to rain, however we were also able to make the trip to Aegina ... oh, it may not be the best city for shopping and night-entertainment, but at least once in your life you have to go to Athens ...
