New York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (day 9)

Nonostante tutto quello che è accaduto nella giornata precedente, le ore piccole e la stanchezza... non possiamo permetterci il lusso di non rispettare la tabella di marcia. E, anche in questa occasione, il mitico diner (che qualche ora prima ci aveva permesso di effettuare il check in) ci viene davvero incontro. Già, perchè non solo la colazione è inclusa, ma si effettua proprio nel diner. Questa volta dunque ci va davvero di lusso e ne approfittiamo, mangiando di tutto di più, sia per quanto riguarda il dolce che il salato...

Despite all the things happened the day before, we can't waste time this morning. And, on this occasion, the legendary diner (where we did the check in few hours before) is still saving us. Infact, breakfast is included... and we are going to have it at the diner!!! A real american breakfast, with sweet and salty food.

Ora sì, siamo pronti per partire verso un avventura che ci porterà ad attraversare sei stati e compiere (ma ancora non lo sapevamo...) 5mila chilometri con la nostra Chrysler.

Now it's really time to leave for an adventure that will take us to cross six states and drive for 5 thousand kilometers with our Chrysler.

La prima tappa ci porterà da Cheyenne, la capitale del Wyoming, a Keystone, nel South Dakota (278 miglia), attraversando da sud verso nord est il "the cowboy state", ovvero il Wyoming. E, che siamo nel regno dei cowboy lo intuiamo subito: praterie, pochissime cittadine (ne abbiam trovata un con 3 come numero di abitanti) e tanta natura selvaggia.

During the first stage (from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Keyston, South Dakota: 278 miles) we cross the "cowboy state" from the south to the north. And we immediately notice that we are in Wyoming: grasslands, very few towns (we found a town with 3 inhabitants) and so much wildlife.

La strada è lunga e prima di entrare nel South Dakota scorgiamo il cartello che segnala l'Oregon Trail, una delle principali strade di migrazione americane che dall'est portavano verso l'impervio ovest.

It's a long trip and before entering the South Dakota we see the Oregon Trail historical sign, one of the main streets of American migration from the east that led to the steep west. 

Entrati nel South Dakota, la prima tappa è il Custer State Park (ingresso 10 dollari). Se si arriva da sud/sud-ovest è la porta di entrata delle Black Hills, la cui punta di diamante è ovviamente il Mount Rushmore. Il Custer significa natura e animali... e nonostante un violento acquazzone riusciamo ad avvistarli.

Entering in South Dakota, the first step is the Custer State Park (admission 10 dollars). If you are coming from the south/south west this is the port of entry of the "black hills". The diamond is of course the Mount Rushmore. Custer State Park means nature and wildlife... and despite a violent storm we see a lot of animals.

Incrociamo immediatamente qualche asinello "on the road"...

ma ovviamente sono i bisonti il simbolo dell'area che stiamo visitando.

but of course the symbol of this area are the bison.

Lasciato il Custer ci dirigiamo verso il Mount Rushmore: percorriamo la panoramica Iron Mountain Road e, all'improvviso, ecco spuntare il famoso tunnel "con vista sui presidenti".

Leaving Custer State Park we head towards the Mount Rushmore: we are driving along the scenic Iron Mountain Road when, suddenly, we see the famous tunnel "with the view on the presidents." 

Siamo ancora ad una quindicina di miglia dal Mount Rushmore, ma anche da lontano la scultura è imponente. Keystone è la classica cittadina western: come moltissimi dei paesini che caratterizzano sia il South Dakota che il Wyoming non è molto grande, ma offre di tutto e lì potresti benissimo spendere anche un'intera settimana...

We are still about fifteen miles far from Mount Rushmore, but even if  we are far from it, sculpture is impressive. Keystone is the classic Western town: it is not very big, but it offers everything and you can even spend one week there

Dopo cena vorremmo assistere allo spettacolo che ogni sera (d'estate) si tiene davanti al Mount Rushmore, rimandando alla mattina successiva il "presidential trail", ma la pioggia ancora una volta decide di metterci i bastoni tra le ruote.

After dinner we would like to watch the show that every night (in the summer) is held in front of Mount Rushmore but the rain once again decides to stop us.

a metà strada, seppure a malincuore, decidiamo di tornare indietro. Risparmiamo 11 dollari e tanta, tantissima acqua, che da lì a poco sarebbe scesa su Keystone e sul Mount Rushmore. L'appuntamento con "i faccioni" è però solamente rimandato...

halfway we decide to come back to the hotel. We save $ 11... but the appointment with the Mount Rushmore is just postponed ...
