If Arizona could give you the single place that you will bring forever in your heart (the Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon ...) however, there is a state, completely different from all the others, which probably beats all. We talk about the most popular destination for an "on the road": its name is California, a very special place on earth. Another place like California, where large cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego ) are very close to deserts, mountains, ocean and all the the things it can offer ... well simply does not exist at least in the North American continent. There is something for everyone here: those who love adventure will be satisfied, as well as those who love the sea or the mountains, or even those who love luxury (some neighborhoods of Los Angeles and Palm Springs above all) or small villages in the desert. We would like to draw a top 30, not just a top 10, but we are here for this, for our "ten must see places"! Don't forget that California is a very huge state and you are forced to make choices while you are organizing the trip.
SAN FRANCISCO
Chi non apprezza San Francisco, non è nostro amico. Su questo aspetto non cominciamo neppure a negoziare. Città unica al mondo e del tutto particolare: le principali attrazioni sono ovviamente il Golden Gate, l'isola di Alcatraz, la Lombard Street, il pier, chinatown (la più grande fuori dai confini cinesi) ed i mitici cable car. Dimenticatevi l'auto, immergetevi in "Frisco" e percorrete i suoi saliscendi a piedi o sfruttando i mezzi pubblici,,,
Who doesn't like San Francisco, can't be friend of us! we don't negotiate about this aspect. A very unique and particular city: the main attractions are of course the Golden Gate, Alcatraz Island, the Lombard Street, the Pier, Chinatown (the biggest outside China) and the wonderful cable car. Forget about your car, walk along Frisco's up and down or use public transport.
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK E SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK
Li uniamo poichè non sono lontanissimi l'uno dall'altro. Certo, Yosemite è sconfinato e quindi le distanze vanno ovviamente prese con le molle. Siamo in alta, altissima montagna (il Tioga pass è situato a 3000 metri), tra cascate enormi (le Yosemite falls sono le più grandi del nord america con i loro 740 metri), vallate e... anche orsi. Sì, in America non mancano mai. La Tioga Road, l'unica che attraversa il parco, nei mesi più freddi rimane chiusa, per cui è necessario in sede di organizzazione del viaggio accertarsi che sia agibile. Poco sotto Yosemite c'è un altro parco straordinario, il Sequoia National Park. I 75 km della General Hwy sono assolutamente scenografici ed attraversano la Giant Forest, dove le enormi sequoie dal tronco rossastro superano in altezza palazzi di oltre 20 piani.
They are two huge national park and you can easily visit both of them in a California trip because Yosemite and Sequoia are close each other. Of course, Yosemite is boundless and distances here are very important. It's high, very high mountains (the Tioga Pass is located at 3000 meters), there are huge waterfalls (the Yosemite falls are the largest of North America with their 740 meters), valleys and ... even bears. The Tioga Road, the only one that runs through the park, in the colder months is closed. Just below Yosemite there is another extraordinary park, Sequoia National Park. The 75 km of the Hwy General are absolutely spectacular and cross the Giant Forest, where redwoods are as high as 20 floor buildings.
DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
Rocce risalenti a quasi due milioni di anni fa, temperature che tranquillamente possono raggiungere anche i 50 gradi (all'ombra, se la trovate) ed un luogo, tra i tanti, del tutto particolare: Badwater, profondo 86 metri sotto il livello del mare e dove il sale accumulatosi sembra sabbia. La Death Valley è questo e molto altro: il nome incute timore (valle della morte) e non fa altro che aumentarne il fascino...

Chilometri e chilometri di natura di una bellezza stordente, una strada sospesa tra oceano foreste e montagne. La Highway 1, che collega San Francisco a Los Angeles, è una delle strade panoramiche più belle al mondo. L'immagine che più simboleggia la bellezza del Big Sur è offerta dal Julia Pfeiffer state park (uno dei tanti state park che potrete visitare), dove la McWay Fall si getta direttamente sulla spiaggia di una baia inserita in un contesto naturale dai colori irreali. La 17mile drive è un'altra perla: la incrocerete appena lasciata Monterey, un loop (a pagamento) da effettuare in auto che vi porterà nel lusso più totale in una natura con pochi eguali nella cittadina di Pebble Beach.
Miles and miles of beautiful nature, a road suspended between ocean, forests and mountains. the Highway 1, which connects San Francisco to Los Angeles, is one of the best scenic drives in the world. The picture that best symbolizes the beauty of Big Sur is offered by Julia Pfeiffer State Park (one of many state park that you can visit in this area), where McWay Fall comes directly on the beach in a bay situated in a natural place with unreal colors. The 17mile drive is another gem: just left Monterey, you'll find a loop (there is a small fee, about 10 dollars) and with your car you'll be in the town of Pebble Beach: an exclusive luxury place in a nature with few equals.
SAN DIEGO
Troppo spesso sottovalutata e "terza incomoda" dopo Los Angeles e San Francisco, San Diego vi stupirà. Classica città di confine, vive l'influenza messicana, ma qui potrete trovare di tutto, anche un'importante comunità italiana. Le spiagge più belle della costa le troverete qui e anche la strada che la collega a Los Angeles (attraverserete la famosa Orange County di O.C.) è imperdibile. Il centro nevralgico è il Gaslamp (tra negozi e ristoranti), ma sia la Jolla, dove troverete le spiagge più belle "baywatch style", la Old Town, e la lussuosa penisola di Coronado non vi deluderanno. Anche qui, come in tutta la costa, potrete ammirare i leoni marini...
Too often underestimated comparing to the most famous Los Angeles and San Francisco, but San Diego will amaze you. It's a classical border city, living the Mexican flu, but here you can find everything, even an important Italian community. The most beautiful beaches of the entire west coast coast are around San Diego and even the road that connects the city to Los Angeles (crossing the famous Orange County of "The O.C.") is a must. LOS ANGELES
Di Los Angeles si può dire tutto ed il contrario di tutto. Città immensa, o vi innamorerete di lei oppure non vi dirà nulla. I suoi quartieri chic (Beverly Hills...), il cinema, il divertimento (disneyland e Universal Studios), le spiagge (Santa Monica, Venice Malibu) sono luoghi famosi in tutto il mondo.
About Los Angeles you can say everything and anything. Immense city, you'll love it or you won't like it. Its chic neighborhoods (Beverly Hills and much more ...), hollywood, entertainment (Disneyland and Universal Studios) and beaches (Santa Monica, Venice Malibu) are well known all over the the world.
NAPA VALLEY
La regione della Napa Valley, insieme a Sonoma, da vita ad una delle regioni viti vinicole più attive e prestigiose al mondo. Gli amanti del turismo eno-gastronomico (come noi!) non possono assolutamente perdersi questa zona appena a nord di San Francisco. Si tratta di un'area molto ma molto simile alla nostra Toscana.
The Napa Valley region and Sonoma, create one of the most active and prestigious wine vines region in the world. Food and wine lovers and people who love food-tourism (like us!) should not miss this area just north of San Francisco. This area is very, very similar to our Tuscany.
THE DESERTS
I deserti occupano il 25% del territorio californiano. Ce ne sono due. A sud il Colorado deserts, con il bellissimo Joshua tree National Park e la città di Palm Springs, un'oasi incredibile in mezzo al deserto. Più a nord, poco fuori Los Angeles e lungo la Route 66, c'è il deserto del Mojave che vi condurrà sino alla Death Valley. Se state progettando un viaggio a tinte californiane, molto probabilmente ne attraverserete almeno uno dei due e sarà un'esperienza unica.
Deserts occupy 25% of the California's territory. There are two deserts: south-east of Los Angeles there is the Colorado deserts, with the beautiful Joshua Tree National Park and the city of Palm Springs, an incredible oasis in the desert. Further north, just outside Los Angeles and along Route 66, there's the Mojave Desert that will lead up to the Death Valley. If you are planning a trip to California, most likely you'll pass through at least one of the two deserts and it will be a unique experience.
BODIE & CALICO GHOST TOWN
Sono due cittadine fantasma del vecchio west, fondate dai cercatori nell'epoca della "gold rush". Bodie è a ridosso del Mono Lake (ad est di Yosemite), Calico invece è lungo la route 66 nei pressi di Barstow. Ce ne sarebbe una terza, appena varcato il confine con il Nevada, proprio fuori la Death Valley. Anche se facente parte di un altro stato la segnaliamo comunque perchè comoda da visitare se si è nei pressi della valle della morte. Il suo nome è Rhyolite.
They are two ghost towns of the old west, founded during the "gold rush". Bodie is near the Mono Lake (east of Yosemite), Calico issituated along Route 66 near Barstow. There would be a third ghost town, just crossed the border with Nevada, just outside the Death Valley. Although part of another state this town should be visited if you're around the Death Valley. Its name is Rhyolite.
THE SWIMMING HOLES
In California può fare molto caldo, come testimonia la Death Valley, e ci sono dei luoghi naturali di assoluto refrigerio incredibilmente non ancora diventate mete turistiche. Si chiamano "swimming holes", delle piscine naturali dove rilassarsi e cercare refrigerio. La più "famosa" è probabilmente il god's bath a Sonoma, lungo la strada che collega Yosemite con San Francisco. In California it can be very hot, as evidenced by the Death Valley, but there are natural places of absolute coolness. It's incredible but they are not yet a very famous tourist destinations. They are called "swimming holes", natural pools where you can relax. The most "popular" is probably the god's bath in Sonoma, along the road that connects Yosemite with San Francisco.
