When you think about west Arizona is definitely the first state that comes into your mind. The tipycal "on the road" will usually take you to the north of the state and California will certainly be main part of your trip. But the real west is... Arizona! Phoenix is the main city, its symbol is cactus and many are the places you can't miss, especially in the north but not only there. To describe Arizona as its best we have chosen the ten places we believe are the mirror of the state, avoiding the two most famous: Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. You don't need us to discover this famous places. We have visited some of the places of the top ten, many others have still to be visited and, to be honest, this top ten should easily be a top thirty, because in every corner od this state you can find something special. Our top ten is NOT A RANKING, we just want to help people if they want to visit Arizona, even one of the most "mexican state" (Texas is the other one) and not only because it's close to the borderline. Oh, well, in Tucson there are 362 sunny day every here, it certainly means that in Arizona is hot, very very hot. Especially in summer time.
1- ANTELOPE CANYON
- fino a pochi anni fa era quasi sconosciuto, adesso è diventato una meta sin troppo richiesta, tanto che gli orari migliori per la visita a questo splendido canyon (a ridosso di mezzogiorno, quando la luce scende perpendicolare dentro al canyon), vanno letteralmente a ruba. Esistono due versanti del canyon, l'upper ed il lower: il primo è sicuramente più "turistico", per i fotografi è sostanzialmente come essere in paradiso. Siamo a Page, centro nord dello stato, a ridosso del confine con lo Utah
Until few years ago Antelope Canyon was almost unknown, now it has become as famous as the best times to visit this beautiful canyon (near midday, when the light falls perpendicular into the canyon), is always sold out. There are two sides of the canyon, the upper side and the lower side: the first one is certainly more "touristy" and for photographers is basically like being in paradise. We are in Page, in the center-north of the state, near the Utah borderline.
2- HORSESHOE BEND
- E' il fratellone del Gooseneck state park che trovate in Utah, probabilmente un po' più bello. Vi troverete a pochi metri dal canyon, sotto di voi il fiume Colorado. Al tramonto i suoi colori sono formidabili. Dista poco meno di venti minuti da Page e quindi dall'Antelope Canyon
It's the Gooseneck state park (Utah) big brother, probably is even more beautiful... You'll be few meters far from the canyon, behind you there is the Colorado river. At sunset its colours are amazing. Horseshoe bend is just twenty minutes far from Page and from the Antelope Canyon
3- THE WAVE
- Questa è una perla, ma solo per coraggiosi e, nel complesso, persone che non si arrendono al "primo no". Il motivo per il quale sono in pochi ancora oggi a conoscere questo splendido luogo della terra è dovuto al fatto che è davvero molto, molto difficile da raggiungere. La camminata è di quasi due ore (più altrettante per tornare) e non ci sono particolari segnalazioni sul percorso da intraprendere, ma la grande difficoltà è ottenere il permesso per accedervi. Bisogna prendere parte ad una lotteria (costa sui 5 dollari, non rimborsabili) e sperare che gli indiani, che lo gestiscono così come l'Antelope Canyon e la Monument Valley, estraggano il tuo nome. Se però ce la fate, The Wave a Coyote Butte (confine con lo Utah, a nord'ovest dello stato) è impareggiabile! Se doveste andarci: 6-7 litri di acqua a testa, frutta, barrette energetiche, un gps, una mappa dettagliata e non sottovalutate il deserto.
This is a pearl, but only for the brave and for people who don't surrender when they get a "no" as an answer. The reason why just few people still know this beautiful place on earth is the fact that it's really difficult to get to. The trail is almost two hour long to get to The Wave and there are no special reports and indications on the path. But the great difficulty is to get permission: you have to win a lottery (the cost is about $ 5, non-refundable) holds by the Indians (who run the wave, Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley). But if you are lucky, The Wave at Coyote Butte (near Utah border, noth-west) will be one of the best experience of your entire life! If you go there: remember to bring with you much water, fruit, energy bars, a GPS, a detailed map and don't underestimate the desert.
4- I LUOGHI MITICI DELLA ROUTE 66/MYTHICAL PLACES OF ROUTE 66
- La route 66 attraversa da est a ovest l'intero stato dividendolo sostanzialmente in due parti. Qui si è fatta la storia della "mother road" e molto ancora rimanda al passato, a quando la route 66 dominava l'intero continente nordamericano. E ci sono alcune cittadine, su tutte Seligman, Kingman e Hackberry che le rendono omaggio. Anche solo per acquistare un souvenir sono tappe obbligatorie...
The route 66 crosses from east to west the entire state dividing it into two parts. Here has become the story of the "mother road" and many things still refer to the past, when the route 66 was dominating the entire North American continent. And there are some towns, for example Seligman, Hackberry and Kingman, that will never forget it. You can't miss this towns and buy a souvenir!
5- SEDONA & OAK CREEK CANYON
- La capitale americana della spiritualità new age, qui l'arte è di casa e non è raro trovare per le sue vie scrittori ed artisti. Ma Sedona è famosa anche e soprattutto per le sue rocce rosse e per i suoi canyon (Oak Creek), considerati dagli indiani di un tempo, gli apaches e gli Yavapai, terre magiche. E come dargli torto. Siamo ad un'oretta e mezza di macchina sia dal Grand Canyon che da Phoenix.
The American Capital of the New Age spirituality, here there is a little bit of art in the air and it is not uncommon to find writers and artists. But Sedona is also famous for its red rocks and its canyon (Oak Creek), considered by the Indians, Apaches and Yavapai, magical lands. And how can they be wrong? Sedona is just an hour and a half far from both the Grand Canyon and Phoenix.
6- CANYON DE CHELLY
- Il Canyon de Chelly, pronunciato "Scei" è per palati fini. Se siete amanti della storia, qui ce n'è per 3000 anni, sin dal 1200 AC. Una cultura precedente alla nostra, quella degli indiani Anasazi, che dal 700 dopo cristo hanno vissuto lì in splendide case scolpite nella roccia. Ora sono gli indiani navajo a gestire l'intera area
- Canyon de Chelly (pronunciation "Scei") is for connoisseurs. If you love history, here you can find 3000 years. A culture that came before ours, we are talking about Anasazi Indians, who lived here from 700 after in beautiful houses carved into the rock. Nowadays this area is run by navajo.
7- I LUOGHI MITICI DEL VECCHIO WEST/MYTICAL PLACES OF THE WEST
Se avete visto almeno un film western nella vostra vita, la Monument valley e Sedona su tutti. Certo, ma non solo. A sud ovest c'è Yuma, di "quel treno per Yuma", Bisbee, Benson e soprattutto Tombstone, dove tutto è fermo ai tempi del vecchio west. Lì vivevano i fuorilegge...
If you have ever seen at least one western movie in your entire life, Monument Valley and Sedona are your places. Sure, but there is something more. Yuma (south west), famous for "the train to Yuma", Bisbee, Benson and especially Tombstone, where everything is still in the days of the old wild west.
8- SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK
- A ridosso di Tucson, il Saguaro park è il parco dei... cactus a candelabro. Ne troverete tantissimi e, se lo visiterete all'alba o al tramonto vi regalerà colori incredibili. Ci sono due versioni del parco, quella ad est di Tucson e quella ad ovest, a testimonianza di quanto sia vasto, come del resto tutto in Arizona.
- Near Tucson there is the Saguaro National Park, the park of the... Saguaro Cactus! You'll find a lot of them and, if you visit the park at sunrise or sunset, colour will be wonderful. There are two sides of the park: the first one is located west of Tucson, the second one east of Tucson. That's because everything in Arizona is very huge!

9- IL LAGO POWELL
- Dopo la visita all'Antelope Canyon un po' di relax al Lago Powell è un must. Uno splendido lago artificiale in mezzo ai canyon, una sorta di oasi. Il tour in battello che vi porterà fino al rainbow bridge è molto, molto interessante ma purtroppo non economico (a piedi lo si raggiunge solo con un trail di un paio di giorni!)
-After visiting Antelope Canyon a little bit of relaxation at Lake Powell is really deserved. A beautiful artificial lake in the middle of the canyons, a sort of oasis. The boat tour that will take you up to the rainbow bridge is very, very interesting but unfortunately not cheap (there is even a trail, but it takes two days to get to the rainbow bridge).
10 - PAINTED DESERT E PETRIFIED FOREST
- Un deserto silenzioso e colorato (ogni roccia ha un colore diverso) ed una foresta dove poter ammirare tronchi una volta in legno ed ora cristallizzati. Che l'Arizona sappia regalare fenomeni naturali unici è risaputo ed anche qui madre natura non è stata da meno. Entrando dal New Mexico lungo la route 66 saranno i primi veri "luoghi imperdibili" dell'Arizona che vi troverete davanti.
A silent and colorful (every rock has a different color) desert and a forest where you can admire trunks once wooden and now crystallized. Arizona gives you unique natural experiences and this is well known. Entering from New Mexico along Route 66 those will be the first true Arizona "must see places"...
