Altro giro, altro parco. Dopo tutto, siamo o no nell'area
dei "grandi parchi"? Oggi è il giorno dello Zion, uno di quei
National Park che raramente viene pubblicizzato a dovere, ma che soprattutto
gli americani (e non solo gli abitanti dello Utah), apprezzano moltissimo.
Parliamo di un luogo visitato ogni anno da due milioni e mezzo di visitatori,
nel sud-ovest dello stato, non lontano dai confini con Arizona e Nevada.
Another round, another park. After all, are we or not in the
"great parks" area? Today is the day of Zion, one of the National
Park that is rarely publicized properly, but especially the Americans (and not
only the residents of Utah) greatly appreciate it. Let's talk about a place
visited every year by two and a half million visitors, located in the southwest
of the state, not far from the borders with Arizona and Nevada.
Alle 10 siamo già a ridosso del parco e questa volta non
abbiamo dubbi, anche perchè non abbiamo molta scelta.
It's 10 am and we are already next to the park. There is a
long queue, but this time we know what it should be done!
Parcheggiamo appena fuori il parco e usufruiamo la navetta
gratuita, l'unico modo per visitare l'intero parco e soprattutto l'area a nord
sino al Tempio di Sinawawa dal 1 aprile al 31 ottobre. Come anche per il Bryce
Canyon, la navetta farà diverse fermate.
Leave the car just outside the park and get the free
shuttle, the only way to visit the whole park and especially the northern area
up to the Temple of Sinawawa from April the 1st to October the 31st. As for the
Bryce Canyon, the shuttle will do several stops.
Il rischio di flash flood è sempre elevato in quest'are
degli Usa, ma per oggi possiamo stare tranquilli.
Flash floods can suddenly happen in this area of the United
States, but today it's very safe.
Zion è un'enorme gola di più di venti chilometri e profonda
ottocento metri, il paradiso degli alpinisti e non solo.
Zion is a huge gorge more than twenty kilometers and eight
hundred meters deep), a paradise for climbers and much more.
Gli amanti dell' "hiking" avranno pane per i loro
denti e chi come noi si appresta a vivere una veloce sosta all'interno del
parco non potrà coglierne in pieno lo spettacolo può offrire.
Hiking lovers will love this place more than us, just
because a fast visit is not enough if you want to live, and not just visit, the
park.
Ci sarebbe la possibilità di effettuare diversi trail che
portano a diverse "emerald pool", le piscine naturali simbolo
dell'intero parco.
There could also be the possibility to do a lot of trails
that lead to different "emerald pools", symbol of the entire park.
Noi però non possiamo permetterci lunghi trail, anche perchè
ci aspetta il tappone verso la Death Valley nel pomeriggio, effettuiamo dunque
solamente quello che parte dal Temple di Sinawawa.
But we can not afford long trails, also because a long stage
is waiting for us. We'll have to be at the Death Valley in the late afternoon,
so just the Temple of Sinawawa is part of our today schedule.
Faremo solamente la parte "turistica", chiamiamola
così, quella del Zion Narrows Day Hike. Gli escursionisti più esperti da qui
partono per "gitarelle" della durata anche di dodici ore che regalano
in determinati momenti dell'anno luoghi come questo...
We will only do the Zion Narrows Hike Day, the area where
tourists usually go. From here expert hikers starts a twelve hours trail which, at certain times of
the year, gives view like this ...
Noi ci accontentiamo di un'oretta buona di trail; certo non
raggiungeremo le incantevoli "pool", ma il panorama non è affatto
male.
One hour trail is enough for us. Yes, of course we won't
reach the enchanting pools, anyway the view is not so bad.The most important rock formations of the park such as the
Watchman and the West Temple are in the background.
Così come i mitici scoiattoli che mangiano, mangiano,
mangiano... e si godono l'America. Proprio come noi!
As well as the legendary squirrels who eat, eat, eat ... and
enjoy America. Just like us!
Come il caldo, che mai ci lascerà durante queste esperienza
nel Soutwest americano.

Il fiume Virgin River, che scorre all'interno del Canyon, è
un toccasana. Verrebbe voglia anche di fare un bel bagno, ma questa volta non
siamo attrezzati: i costumi e l'asciugamano sono sulla macchina...
The Virgin River, which flews inside the canyon, is a

ready, swimwears and towels are in theback of the car...
Poco dopo pranzo lasciamo Zion con l'idea di visitare la
città di fantasma di Grafton, non lontano dall'entrata del parco. La strada è,
come spesso succede, isolata e desistiamo quando notiamo che prima di
raggiungere la cittadina dovremmo affrontare quasi due miglia di sterrato. Non
vogliamo rischiare e decidiamo dunque di rimetterci in marcia, direzione Death
Valley. Varchiamo prima il confine con l'Arizona per un brevissimo tratto e poi
quello con il Nevada...
We leave Zion after lunch. Not far from the park there is
the ghost town of Grafton and we are getting there. The road is, as often
happens, isolated and for the last two miles very dirt. Maybe it's better if we
come back, we really can't destroy our car. So let's go to the Death Valley,
crossing the firstly the Arizona borderline and the Nevada borderline .
e, per il solito discorso de "gli Americani ci
sorprendono sempre", troveremo l'espresso più economico di sempre dal
solito ineffabile Mc Donald's che, quando manca caffeina, vi verrà sempre in
soccorso. La sfida è aperta. Se lo troverete ad un prezzo minore negli Stati
Uniti beh... ve lo offriamo noi!
American people always surprise us. It happens often and
this is just another example. We need an espresso coffee and in a Mc Donald's
we get the cheapest espresso ever. Really ever! The challenge is officially
open. If you find it at a lowe price (in the United States), we'll pay it for
you!
Per arrivare alla Death Valley passiamo anche da Las Vegas,
ma non sarà oggi che ci fermeremo nella "sin city". Continuiamo lungo
il deserto del Nevada, non lontano dalla mitica e piena di mistero Area 51 (che
proprio all'ultimo abbiamo deciso di togliere dal nostro itinerario), sino ad
arrivare ad Amargosa Valley.
To get to the Death Valley we drive also through Las Vegas,
but this is not the "sin city"' day. We continue along the Nevada
desert, not far from the legendary and full of mystery "Area 51" (we
have decided to remove it from our route few days before leaving Italy), till
getting to Amargosa Valley.
No. non ci sono molte alternative. Se stai per visitare la
Death Valley e decidi di non pernottare all'interno del parco (Furnace Creek
lodging) tra le poche cittadine a ridosso dell'enorme valle della Morte, lato
est, c'è Amargosa Valley. Pieno deserto del Nevada, verrebbe da dire decadente
deserto del Nevada. Non c'è nulla di nulla, ma questa volta nel vero senso
della parola. Ad un certo punto, quando il navigatore ci avvisa che mancano 3
chilometri al raggiungere la destinazione prefissata, cominciamo a
preoccuparti. Non c'è una casa, una pompa di benzina. Nulla. Poi eccolo
comparire, il Longstreet Inn & Casino, un'autentica oasi nel deserto.
Well, there isn't much choice. If you're planning to visit
the Death Valley and you don't wanna spend the night inside the park (Furnace
Creek Lodging), you can select one of the few towns around the park (east
side). One of them is Amargosa Valley, in the middle of the Nevada Desert, the
decadent Nevada desert. This place is really located in the middle of nowhere.
At one point, while the gps is telling us that we are approaching Alamogordo,
we realize that something is going wrong. No houses, no gas station. What's
going on? There, like an oasis in the desert, the Longstreet Inn & Casino
appears in front of us.
Non è un hotel, è una città.
That's not a hotel, it's an entire town!
C'è un casinò, un minimarket, un bar, due steakhouse (una
molto "easy" e l'altra di livello), una piscina, un laghetto con
animali da fattoria e ovviamente le camere.
You don't need anything else: there is a casino, a small
market, a bar, two steakhouse (the first one very "easy", the second
one "high level"), a pool, a lake with farm animals and of course
rooms.
Wow, mai vissuta un'esperienza del genere. Siamo noi, gli altri turisti e nient'altro. Ah, l'hamburger con funghi, peperoni, mais, purè con salsina non ci deluderà...
Wow, we have never had an experience like that. It's us,
other travelers and really nothing else. Well, hamburger with peppers,
mushrooms, corns and mashed potatoes don't let us down!
La location perfetta per preparare la giornata successiva, quella che avrà come clou la visita della Death Valley. L'Ale studia, Marco gioca. Giusto così.
That's the perfect location, we can just plan the day after,
when we'll visit the magnificent Death Vallet. While Marco is playing and
joking, Ale plans. That sounds good!
