The old wild... southwest - Summer 2015 (day 11 - Hoover Dam & Las Vegas)

Quando sei a Las Vegas o nei suoi dintorni, la visita alla mitica "Hoover Dam", la diga di Hoover, non può non essere contemplata. Noi siamo pronti a sfidare le solite temperature infernali di agosto e di buon'ora percorriamo la quarantina di chilometri che separano, in direzione sud, Las Vegas da Boulder City.

When you're in Las Vegas a visit to the legendary "Hoover Dam" can't really be missed. We are ready to challenge the usual hellish temperatures driving along the thirty miles which separate Las Vegas from Boulder City.

E, quando il lago Mead, il più grande lago artificiale degli Stati Uniti "figlio" proprio della diga, si apre davanti a noi è il segnale che stiamo approcciando anche la Hoover Dam.

And, when Lake Mead, the largest man-made lake in the United States, a kind of "son" of the dam, appears in front of us it means that we're approaching the Hoover Dam.

Superiamo i controlli (si tratta di una zona ad altissimo rischio di attentati terroristici) a cui sono sottoposti le vetture in procinto di oltrepassare la diga e raggiungiamo il parcheggio gratuito (ce n'è uno a ridosso del visitor center, ma 10 dollari ci paiono decisamente eccessivi) situato in... Arizona.

This is an area with a high risk of terrorist attacks, so we are facing a kind of checkpoint before entering into the Hoover Dam are. Close to the visitor center there is even a free parking (10 dollars), but we prefer to leave the park in a free parking located in.. Arizona!

Già, Arizona. Perchè la Hoover Dam è collocata a cavallo tra gli stati del Nevada e quello dell'Arizona, il che la rende ancor più unica.

Yes, Arizona. Because the Hoover Dam is located on the borderline between Nevada and Arizona. This is one reason why it's so special...

Il caldo si fa sentire già alle 10 del mattino, ma lo spettacolo offerto dalla natura, questa volta in coabitazione con l'uomo è di una bellezza stordente. Il caldo è un prezzo che paghiamo volentieri...

It's 10 am but it's already very hot. Anyway, the show offered by men and nature is suggestive.

Più di 200 metri di altezza, altrettanti in lunghezza (alla base), il black Canyon ed il solito fiume Colorado sullo sfondo fanno della "Hoover Dam" la diga certamente più famosa d'America.

More than 200 meters high, as many in length (at the base), the Black Canyon and the Colorado River in the background certainly make the "Hoover Dam" Dam the America's most famous dam.

E' possibile anche effettuare visite guidate all'interno della diga stessa e della centrale elettrica per scoprire a fondo segreti e funzionamento di questa incredibile opera dell'uomo, noi preferiamo ammirarla da fuori, facendo avanti e indietro e passando diverse volte da uno stato all'altro.

You can also take guided tours of the dam and of the power plant and learn more about secrets and the operation of this amazing enormous machine made by the man. Anyway, we prefer to admire it from outside, walking several times along the bridge and passing from one state to another.

Dopo tutto, non saremmo noi se non cominciassimo a fare gli "stupidini".

After all, are we silly or not?

Prima di lasciare la diga rientriamo in Nevada e, poco prima della postazione "controlli" parcheggiamo l'auto in un piazzale e raggiungiamo il Memorial Bridge.

Before leaving the dam we return to Nevada and, just few steps before the checkpoint station, we stop at the Memorial Bridge.

Costruito nel 2009, permette non solo alle auto di "scavalcare" la diga dall'alto, ma anche ai turisti di ammirarla da una posizione impareggiabile.

Built in 2009, it allows tourists to admire an unrivaled location and cars to pass over the dam.

Lasciata la diga e ritornati a Las Vegas, da amanti dei programmi di Adam Richman (Man vs food e Man finds food), decidiamo di rendergli omaggio anche in questo "on the road" e per farlo abbiamo scelto un luogo del tutto particolare.

Left the dam and back to Las Vegas, as Adam Richman's tv programs lovers (Man vs Food and Man Finds Food), we decide to make him happy even in this on the road choosing a very special place.

Siamo sulla strip e l'hotel è il Cosmopolitan: siamo alla ricerca della "the secret pizza" che, come racconta già il nome, sappiamo non essere facile da scovare perchè nascosta in mezzo all'ennesimo enorme hotel chiamato Cosmopolitan.

We are hitting the Strip. The stop is at the Cosmopolitan Hotel looking for "the secret pizza" which, as also its name tells, we know it's not easy to find, because it is hidden inside this big hotel.

Uno degli inservienti ci viene incontro e sorridendo ci spiega che al secondo piano troveremo quello che andiamo cercando. Lo capiamo dalla coda, lunghissima. Finalmente possiamo testare la "pizza di Adam", buona anche se non economicissima.

An attendant helps us and explanes that we can find "the Secret Pizza" at the second floor.
We understand that we finally have found it because of the long queue. Finally we can taste "Adam's pizza" and it is deliciuos but not so cheap.

Ne approfittiamo per visitare gli hotel che sono situati dalla parte opposta della strip rispetto allo stratoshpere: l'Excalibur con la sua tipica ambientazione medievale...

As we are in the opposite side of the Strip to the Stratosphere, we decide to visit the hotels around there: Excalibur with its tipical medieval setting...

...e soprattutto il New York, New York, sicuramente uno di quelli che più ci ha colpito tra quelli meno lussuosi.

...and above all the "New York New York", of course one of those that most impressed us among those less luxurious.

Neppure i soliti quaranta gradi "Vegas" ci fermano e proviamo a visitarli sostanzialmente tutti, scoprendo una Las Vegas decisamente diversa da quella festosa e piena di luci della sera.

105° F outside, but we keep on visiting hotels, discovering a different Las Vegas comparing to the funny and lightnening one of the night.

E tutto sommato non ci dispiace neppure.

And we like it.

Anche per la sera abbiamo in serbo un gioiellino per quanto riguarda il cibo. Siamo o no in America? Sì. E siamo o no a Las Vegas dove puoi trovare di tutto, da Gordon Ramsay alla pizzeria più nascosta?

For the evening we have a "foodpearl": are we in America or not?! Yesm we are! And.. are we or not in Vegas, where you can find everything... from Gordon Ramsay's restaurants to the most hidden pizzeria?

Sì. E allora non possiamo non fare gli americani e, grazie al solito immenso fiuto dell'Ale (ma anche di tripadvisor), ci fiondiamo ancora lungo la strip alla ricerca dello Stripburger, piccola paninoteca all'inizio della strip (zona Palazzo). Fantastico: crediamo che la foto parli da sola...

Yep! So we do "americans" and, thanks to Ale's nose (and also thanks to tripadvisor) we decide to eat at the Stripburger, on the Strip, a small restaurant in the Palazzo Hotel's zone. Awsome: the picture tells everything...

Non è e non sarà mai la nostra città preferita, però i colori e l'atmosfera di Las Vegas non possono passare inosservati.

This is not (and it would never be) our favourite city, but colours and atmosphere of Las Vegas stay impressed.

Ammiriamo i gondolieri del Venetian...

We look at the gondoliers of the Venetian..

e chiudiamo la serata, come è giusto che sia, con uno splendido cupcake dal "boss delle torte", all'interno del solito bellissimo "Venetian".

Let's end the night with a delicious red velvet cupcake from "the cake boss", inside the Venetian.

Sì, le calorie acquistate oggi non si contano neppure ma, com'è il proverbio? Ah sì, "quello che succede a Las Vegas, resta a Las Vegas". Anche i chili!

Ok, we didn't count the calories of today, but "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". Also pounds!
