Ogni occasione è buona per viaggiare. Anche un week end, anche con la decisione presa all'ultimo momento. Dove andiamo senza spendere tanto? Perchè non nella relativamente vicina Slovenia. Detto, fatto. Circa 450 km separano Milano dal confine sloveno, è l'occasione perfetta per vivere due giorni pieni lontano da casa senza dover prendere voli e restare nel "low cost" che tanto ci appartiene (nel caso doveste volare, l'aereoporto principale è quello di Lubiana). Scegliamo come base il carinissimo hotel "Al ponte" di Gradisca d'Isonzo, a dieci km dal confine sloveno (ma ricordatevi che in Slovenia gli alloggi costano davvero pochissimo) e dopo aver acquistato il pass autostradale sloveno, 7.50 euro per una settimana, siamo pronti per immergerci nelle colline e nel verde che caratterizza uno degli stati più sottovalutati, ma nello stesso tempo più belli, d'Europa.
DAY 2: Vintgar gorges & lake Bled
Every occasion is good to travel. Even a weekend, even if the decision has been taken at the last moment. Where do we go without spending much money? Why not Slovenia? It ain't too far! About 450 kilometers separate Milan from the Slovenian border, that is the perfect opportunity to experience two full days away from home without flights in a "low cost" mode (if you are flying, the main airport is Ljubljana). Our base for the two days will be the "Al ponte" hotel in Gradisca d'Isonzo, just 10 kilometers far from the borderline, but don't forget that lodging in Slovenija is definitely cheaper! Just the time to purchase the Slovenian motorway pass (7:50 € for a week) and we ready to immerse ourselves in the hills and the green setting in one of the most underrated, but at the same time most beautiful, states in Europe.
Stiamo guidando verso le grotte di Postumia, una cinquantina di chilometri a ovest di Lubiana, probabilmente il fiore all'occhiello dell'intera Slovenia e tra le grotte più famose al mondo. Anzi, forse le più famose.
We are driving towards Postojna, about fifty kilometers west of Ljubljana. The Postojnska cave are probably the highlight of the entire Slovenia and one of the most famous caves in the world. Well, perhaps the most famous.

Il trenino vi accompagna per 3.7 chilometri , poi inizierà la vera e propria visita guidata (la durata totale è di un'ora e mezza) all'interno di uno dei più importanti fenomeni carsici al mondo.
The train will take you, after 3.7 chilometers, to the point where the visit officially starts. This is in one of the most important karst phenomena in the world.
Scopriamo anche che le grotte sono in continua espansione: poco tempo prima alcuni scienziati avevano, infatti, appena scoperto un altro tratto che ha, di fatto, aumentato la lunghezza delle grotte stesse che prima era di 24 chilometri.
We even find out that the caves are growing: scientists had, in fact, just found another stretch that increased the length of the caves which used to be 24 kilometers.

Parliamo di un castello medievale e sin dai primi racconti non si riesce a non immedesimarsi nelle avventure di Erasmo da Predjama, personaggio del quale è difficile non provare simpatia.
It's a medieval castle and since the first stories you can not empathize with the adventures of Erasmus of Predjama.
Non vi sveliamo tutta la storia, però non possiamo davvero non svelare il finale. Il "nostro" Erasmo che, attenzione, era tutto tranne che "stupido", finì malissimo la sua avventura nel castello: tradito e poi ucciso dalle palle di fuoco lanciate dai nemici mentre si trovava al... gabinetto. Se volete vivere l'atmosfera medievale in un scenografico castello, questo è davvero il posto che fa per voi.
We do not reveal the whole story, but we are forced to reveal the ending because it's very funny. "Our" Erasmus which wasn't "stupid", ended his adventure in the castle very badly: betrayed and then killed by the fireballs thrown by enemies while he was in the... toilet .... If you want to experience the medieval atmosphere in a spectacular castle, this really is the place for you.
Poi ovviamente, quando c'è l'Ale di mezzo non può mai finire con la semplice visita di un luogo. "Marco posso tirare con l'arco? Posso?". "Puoi, puoi". Una gentile coppia del luogo, infatti, consente ai turisti di cimentarsi con il tiro con l'arco con soli tre euro.
Then obviously, when ale gets involved a surprise is always behind the corner. "Marco, can i do archery? Please, please!". "Ok, you can, you can". A nice couple, in fact, allows visitors to live this experience with just three Euros.
Non sappiamo se per pietà o altro ma, dopo aver spiegato nei dettagli la posizione da tenere prima di lanciare la freccia, viene concesso all'Ale di tirare non meno di sei-sette volte. Con risultati, mettiamola così, modesti. Bene, ma non benissimo.

Soddisfatti dell'avventura ci dirigiamo verso Lubiana, città molto più viva di quello che ci si possa aspettare.

Giriamo per le vie e, soprattutto, scopriamo che è in scena un mercatino dei sapori fantastico. Ogni venerdì, infatti, Lubiana si affolla soprattutto di "gente del posto" per il Odprtra Kuhna, la cucina aperta.
While we are walking around the narrow streets of the old town, we find out a lot of food stands. Every Friday, in fact, many "locals" come to downtown for the Odprtra Kuhna, the open kitchen.
E' il mercato delle bontà appena cucinate, con vari chef sloveni che preparano dal vivo e propongono i propri piatti sugli stand. Difficilmente troverete da sedervi, neppure sulle scalinate a fianco del mercatino, ma i vari stand non vi deluderanno. Anche in relazione al costo (decisamente basso) delle varie prelibatezze soprattutto slovene. Che ricordiamo essere una cucina che risente tantissimo dell'influenza degli stati confinanti. Assaggiamo diverse pietanze, su tutte degli gnocchi agli spinaci e formaggio tipici della Slovenia.

The Predjama Castle reigns over the surrounding area, perched high up in a vertical cliff. It's a romantic sight throughout the year: in the spring and the summer its surroundings are abundant with blossoms and flowers, in the autumn it is clad in the colours of surrounding forests and it is at its most enchanting in the winter when is full of snow. Predjama Castle is in the Guinness World Record Holder as the largest cave castle in the world.
