Sevilla, the land of Flamenco (day 1 & 2: Plaza de Espana, Archivio General de Indias & Catedral de Sevilla)

Un compleanno particolare. Quattro notti nell'incantevole Siviglia, la terra del flamenco, nel cuore di una delle aree più affascinanti dell'intera Europa, l'Andalusia, il viaggio che Ale aspettava da tanto, tantissimo tempo e che vi racconteremo in lungo e in largo.

A special birthday. Four nights in the charming Seville, the land of flamenco, in the heart of one of the most fascinating areas of the entire Europe, the Andalusia. The journey that Ale has been waiting for a long, long time: are you ready?

Tre giorni pieni per la visita della città ci sono sembrati sin da subito più che sufficienti in fase di planning, quarto e quinto invece come sempre sono legati agli spostamenti (volo ryanair da Bergamo). Ed è per questo motivo che il nostro day 1 sarà davvero brevissimo. Atterriamo all'aeroporto di Siviglia che sono già le 8 di sera, giusto il tempo per prendere il bus, posizionato proprio fuori l'uscita, che porterà in centro (la fermata migliore è quella della Torre de Oro). Scoviamo, proprio a ridosso della torre, una economicissima catena di burgers "american style" (The good burger") molto simile all'amatissimo Shake Shack di americana memoria e, dopo dieci minuti, possiamo già dire che l'avventura è cominciata molto, molto bene.

Three days to spend in the city was the original plan, the first and the fifth day are conversely dedicated to the traveling (flight Ryanair from Milan-Bergamo). That's why the day 1 is really short. We land at 8 pm, just in time to catch the bus, located right off the exit, which will take us to the city center (the best stop is "Torre de Oro"). We find out, just right next to the tower, one of the inexpensive chain burgers "American style" ("The good burger " is the name) very similar to our beloved Shake Shack. After few minutes in Sevilla, we can already say that the adventure has started very, very good.

Il nostro hotel (enorme rapporto qualità prezzo), è sì situato a più di 3 km dal centro (dietro lo stadio del Betis Seville), ma ben servito dai mezzi di trasporto ed in particolare dai bus. Sì, il Silken Al Andalus Hotel ci sentiamo vivamente di consigliarlo.

Our hotel (great value) is located more than 3 km far from the city center (behind the stadium of Betis Seville), but well served by public transport, particularly buses. Well, yes, we strongly recommend the Silken Al Andalus Hotel.

E' tardo ottobre la ma temperatura supera già in mattinata i venti gradi. Le condizioni ideali per tuffarci nelle bellezze della città, partendo ovviamente dal suo simbolo, la Plaza De Espana, all'interno dei Giardini di Maria Luisa.

It's late october but even in the morning it's quite warm. The ideal conditions to visit all the beautiful things that Seville can offer, starting of course from its symbol, "Plaza de Espana", inside the Maria Luisa Garden.

La piazza, costruita per l'esposizione iberoamericana del 1929, è decisamente imponente.

The square, built for the Ibero-American exposition of 1929, is quite impressive.

La forma semicircolare rappresenta l'abbraccio della Spagna e delle sue antiche colonie, mentre le panche in ceramica sono dedicate alle 48 province spagnole.

The Plaza de España complex is a huge half-circle with buildings continually running around the edge accessible over the moat by numerous bridges representing the four ancient kingdoms of Spain. By the walls of the Plaza are many tiled alcoves, each representing a different province of Spain.

 Non solo, guarda verso il fiume Guadalquivir e simboleggia la strada da seguire per l'America.

There is something more. Overlooking the river Guadalquivir it symbolizes the way to follow if you are going to America.

E' possibile inoltre noleggiare una barchetta e percorrere il canale all'interno della piazza.

You can even rent a small boat and travel along the channel inside the square.

A ridosso della piazza c'è il parco di Maria Luisa, un'autentica oasi verde che immaginiamo essere un toccasana soprattutto durante i mesi estivi, dove la calura sivigliana diventa spesso opprimente.

Behind the plaza there is one of the most famous Seville's park. Its name is Maria Luisa park, a real green oasis. During the summer months, when the heat of Seville often becomes overwhelming, we believe it could be a kind of cure-all.

Particolarmente apprezzato da turisti e non, il parco ci colpisce parecchio essendo tra le altre cose anche molto ben curato e ricco di vegetazione "originale", viali in terra rossa e decorazioni in ceramica.

Especially popular with tourists and locals, the park affects us a lot because it's also very well kept and full of an "original" vegetation", red clay avenues and ceramic decorations.

Non è sicuramente un caso che il Parco Maria Luisa sia uno tra i luoghi maggiormente apprezzati di Siviglia.

It is definitely not a coincidence that the Maria Luisa Park is one of the most popular places in Seville.

Tornati nel cuore del centro storico per pranzo optiamo per un "must" quando si è in Spagna. Parliamo ovviamente del "100 Montaditos", una catena di mini panini davvero economici (1.00 euro) che meriterebbe un capitolo a parte.

Back in the heart of the old town for lunch we opt for a "must" when you are in Spain. We're talking of course about "100 Montaditos", mini sandwiches really cheap (1.00 euro each) that would deserve a separate chapter...

Non ci facciamo ingolosire troppo e ci limitiamo ad un panino a testa, anche perchè sappiamo già che non resisteremo al "jamon serrano", l'ottimo prosciutto crudo spagnolo!

we just eat one sandwiches, just because we already know that we won't resist the goodness of the spanish ham, called "jamon serrano".

Proprio nel cuore del centro storico prende vita uno dei quartieri più affascinanti dell'intera Siviglia.

Right in the heart of the old town it comes to life one of the most fascinating neighborood of Seville.

Il Barrio Santa Cruz, un susseguirsi di colori e profumi in strette vie caratterizzate da parecchi monumenti, negozi di souvenir e locali rustici dove gustare le mitiche tapas.

The Barrio Santa Cruz, a succession of colors and perfumes in narrow streets marked by several monuments, souvenir shops and rustic restaurants where you can enjoy the legendary tapas.

Camminiamo senza meta, che è poi anche ciò che ci piace maggiormente fare quando visitiamo le grandi città, mentre danzatori di Flamenco intrattengono turisti e non.

Walking aimlessly, which is also what we like most when in we are in the big cities, while Flamenco dancers entertain tourists and even locals.

Quasi a malincuore dobbiamo momentaneamente lasciare le viette del Barrio, dopo tutto c'è una città da visitare... La prossima tappa è l'Archivio Generale delle Indie (Archivio General de Indias, ingresso gratuito), situato all'interno di un palazzo del rinascimento.

We have reluctantly leave the Barrio, after all there is a city to visit ... The next stop is the General Archive of the Indies (Archivio General de Indias, free entrance), located in a Renaissance building.

Non ci colpisce molto, nonostante sia uno dei cinque archivi nazionali spagnoli e contenga documenti relativi all'impero spagnolo nelle Americhe e nelle Filippine.

The archive isn't that beautiful, despite being one of the five Spanish National Archives and contains documents concerning the Spanish empire in the Americas and the Philippines.

Proprio accanto all'Archivio delle Indie sorge un altro dei simboli di Siviglia, la Cattedrale, uno dei più grandi manifesti della cristianità all'interno di una città a forti tinte arabe anche se solamente a livello di architettura.

Right next to the Archive of the Indies there is another symbol of Seville, the Cathedral, one of the greatest posters of Christianity within a city where also Arabic culture has its own importance although only architecturally.

La cattedrale di Santa Maria della Sede di Siviglia è la più grande cattedrale gotica del mondo, ed il terzo edificio religioso per dimensione dopo la basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano e la cattedrale di Saint Paul a Londra. Al suo interno si trova anche la tomba di Cristoforo Colombo.

The Santa Maria's Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, and the third biggest religious building after the Basilica of Saint Peter and Saint Paul's Cathedral in London. Inside the cathedral there is the tomb of Christopher Columbus.

Noi però siamo strani e la parte che gradiamo maggiormente è la salita sul campanile, la torre della Giralda (incluso nel costo del biglietto), dal quale è possibile ammirare uno splendido scorcio di Siviglia.

Actually we are weird and the part that we like most about it is the Giralda tower (included in the ticket price), from which you can admire a splendid view of Seville.

L'Ale può dare ampio sfogo al fotografo che c'è in lei e, ovviamente, non vuole più scendere.

Ale can make a lot of pictures and doesn't want to leave this place anymore.

La giornata letteralmente vola ed alle 19 siamo cotti ed affamati. I ritmi spagnoli però, si sa, sono molto lenti: veniamo rimbalzati un paio di volte dal ristorante che avevamo scelto per la sera (bodega dos de mayo, numero 73 di 1914 su tripadvisor: 15 euro a testa) e quindi ne approfittiamo per per visitare il centro commerciale La Corte Ingles. Alle 20.30, finalmente, il locale apre (siamo abituati ai ritmi americani noi...) e possiamo esordire con le tapas.

We've done a lot of things and time literally flies. It's already 7pm  and we're cooked and hungry. The Spanish rhythms, you know, are very slow: we would like to have dinner the waiter from the restaurant we've selected for the evening (Bodega dos de mayo, number 73 of 1914 on tripadvisor: 15 euros each) says it's too early. No problem, let's do some shopping at La Corte Ingles! At 8.30 pm the restaurant finally opens (we are used to American rhythms...): it's "tapas time"...

Ne scegliamo sei, sono tutte abbastanza buone ed ovviamente le sbraniamo. L'unico neo è che il locale è un po' troppo turistico e, come diciamo sempre noi, se non ci va la gente del posto...

We pic 6 tapas, all of them are quite good. We've to say that this restaurant is full of tourists and, you know, if there aren't locals around you...

La chiusura è invece per le vie del Barrio Santa Cruz, colma di giovani e piena di vita. Ci facciamo trascinare e concludiamo la giornata con un Legendario invecchiato sette anni, uno dei rum più buoni che abbiamo mai bevuto. Era il 2010 ed eravamo a Cuba. Finalmente l'abbiamo ritrovato...

The last stop of the day is in the Barrio Santa Cruz again. It's full of people, especially young people. We get the "Legendario" aged seven, the most, the rhum we drunk in Cuba in 2010. One of the best ever!

Sevilla, the land of Flamenco (day 3: Macarena, Triana & Royal Alcazar)

La nostra giornata comincia dal nord della zona centrale di Siviglia. La fermata con il nostro bus è Calle Torneo, a ridosso del Ponte della Barqueta: da qui inizieremo la visita al caratteristico quartiere de La Macarena. Percorriamo Calle Resolana sino a raggiungere la Torre de los Perdigones, una torre industriale all'interno dell'omonimo parco. La torre è visitabile, a pagamento, noi preferiamo limitarci a qualche foto e, col senno di poi, scopriremo essere stato un discreto errore. Sulla torre, ed in particolare nella "zona scura", si può godere, infatti, di bellissimi panorami sulla città.

Day 3 begins from the north of the old town of Seville. The bus stop is called Calle Torneo, near the Barqueta bridge, where we start the visit to the characteristic neighborhood of La Macarena. We walk along Calle Resolana until reaching the Torre de los Perdigones, an industrial tower. The tower can be visited but we prefer to take just some pictures. We then find out that we've made a mistake. On the top of the tower, and in particular in the "dark area", in fact, you can enjoy beautiful views of the city.

Quando raggiungiamo la "muraglia" intuiamo che stiamo finalmente per entrare nel cuore de La Macarena: è uno dei simboli del quartiere,una costruzione di mura con 8 torrioni, di cui 7 quadrati ed uno ottagonale, risalente al tempo della dominazione almoravide.

Reaching the "wall" we realize that we are finally into the heart of La Macarena: the wall is one of the symbols of the neighborhood, a building with eight towers, dating from the time of the Almoravid domination.

Di fronte alle mura sorge il Parlamento dell'Andalusia.

In front of the wall there is the Parliament of Andalucia.

L'arco sancisce l'accesso ufficiale all'interno del barrio de La Macarena, un quartiere che, al pari del barrio Santa Cruz, non potrà deludervi.

The arch establishes the official access into the barrio of La Macarena, a district which will not disappoint.

A destra dell'arco ecco comparire immediatamente il principale simbolo del quartiere, la Cattedrale: la famosa statua della Madonna della Macarena che risale al ‘700 e che raffigura la disperazione della Madonna dopo la condanna del figlio.

The main symbol of the neighborood, the cathedral, appears just on the right: the famous statue of the Madonna of the Macarena, dating back to '700, that shows the desperation of the Madonna after the conviction of her son.

Il quartiere è un susseguirsi di chiese, di storia e di piccole vie. Sicuramente è meno commerciale e turistico del Barrio Santa Cruz ma ugualmente affascinante.

The neighborhood is a succession of churches, history and small streets. It is surely less commercial and touristic than the Barrio Santa Cruz but equally fascinating.

Lo percorriamo interamente sino a raggiungere Plaza de la Incarnacion. Qui sorge l'Espacio Metropol Parasol, una costruzione imponente, la più grande al mondo in legno, che funge da protezione dal sole durante i mesi più caldi.

We walk along the entirely neighboroods up to the Plaza de la Encarnacion. el Espacio Metropol Parasol is located here: it's an imposing building, the world's largest wooden work, which serves as protection from the sun during the warmer months.

Il mercatino di prodotti agricoli e alcuni bar rendono quest'area decisamente vivibile e vivace.

The farmers' market and some bars make this area very livable and vibrant.

Siamo a ridosso dell'ora di pranzo ed un altro quartiere ci sta aspettando, Triana.

It's almost lunch time and another neighborood is waiting for us: its name is Triana.

Attraversiamo il fiume Guadalquivir lungo il Puente de S. Telmo ed intravediamo subito il simbolo del quartiere stesso, il mercato al coperto.

We cross the river along the S. Telmo bridge and immetiately notice the symbol of Triana, the indoor market.

La "gente del posto" va a far la spesa qui ed anche noi non riusciamo resistere.

Locals come here: this is our place.

Un cono di "chorizo" diventa il nostro "aperitivo". Avremmo mai potuto dire di no?

A cone full of chorizo becomes out "appetizer". 

Triana è il quartiere "gypsy" di Siviglia, il più spartano, sicuramente in passato il più semplice, abitato da operai e da gruppi gitani che ne hanno influenzato l'anima. Triana non ha nulla a che vedere con gli altri quartieri di cui abbiamo parlato, nonostante l'area pedonale ed i tanti ristoranti che ne caratterizzano l'area centrale. Il Flamenco, le Sevillanas, ma anche la corrida sono sostanzialmente nati qui.

Triana is Seville's gypsy neighborood, in the past certainly the simplest, inhabited by workers and gypsies groups that have influenced the soul of the entire area. Triana has nothing to do with the other districts that we talked about, despite the pedestrian area and the many restaurants that characterize the main street. Flamenco and Sevillanas, but also "corridas" are essentially born here.

Proprio in uno dei bar nel cuore di Triana nascerà anche il nostro amore per il "caprino" spagnolo (queso de cabra) servito, sotto forma di Tapas, in questo caso con miele, aceto balsamico e noci. Ci accompagnerà da qui al termine della nostra spedizione in Andalusia.

Just in one of the bars in the heart of Triana we fall in love for the special spanish goat cheese (queso de cabra), in this case served as a tapas with honey, balsamic vinegar and walnuts. Iborn even our love for "goat" Spanish (queso de cabra) served in the form of tapas, in this case with honey, balsamic vinegar and walnuts. The goat cheese will become a part of our trip! 

Il pomeriggio invece lo dedichiamo al Royal Alcazar (9.50 euro), l'enorme palazzo reale.

We decide to spend the entire afternoon at the Royal Alcazar (9.50 euros is the entrance fee), the huge royal palace.

Qui l'influenza del popolo arabo incontra la cultura del cristianesimo.  L'ex residenza del Califfo è stata infatti, dopo la riconquista, convertita in un monastero senza però avere perso nulla della bellezza ed armoniosità dell'architettura moresca.

In Here the influence of the Arab people encounter the culture of Christianity. The former residence of the Caliph was in fact, after the reconquest, converted into a monastery without having lost any of the beauty and harmony of Moorish architecture.

Storia, cultura, arte e paesaggio si mescolano e ti tolgono il fiato.

History, culture, art and landscapes are mixed and will take your breath away.

Sì, anche il paesaggio, perchè il parco, enorme, è davvero bellissimo ed è quasi scontato perdersi tra i labirinti della vegetazione.

Yes, even the gardens. That's because these gardens are really huge and you almost get lost in the labyrinths of vegetation.

Anche noi, che solitamente non ci dilunghiamo nelle visite, restiamo all'interno del Royal Alcazar per due orette buone.

We are not used to stay for a long time in a place, but at least 2 hours should be spent inside the Royal Alcazar.

Per cena ancora Triana e ancora una volta... è presto. Dobbiamo assolutamente aspettare che arrivino almeno le 20.30 per entrare nella Bodega SigloXVIII, un ristorantino che avevamo scovato quasi per caso durante la passeggiata pomeridiana per il quartiere. Tripadvisor ci conferma che qualità ed economicità (le caratteristiche che cerchiamo sempre e comunque) non mancano (numero 304 di 1983 in città), ed essendo i primi clienti veniamo anche coccolati. Testiamo il vino spagnolo (Tinto de Verano, ottimo) e poi, ovviamente tapas. La più buona? Ovviamente il queso de cabra, questa volta con marmellata di fichi.

Dinner time. Again Triana and again... very early!!! We absolutely have to wait. The Bodega Siglo XVIII is a restaurant that we had discovered by chance during the afternoon walk around the neighborhood. TripAdvisor confirms that quality and affordability (the characteristics that we are always looking for) are good (number 304 of 1983 in the city). Being the first customers we are also pampered! Let's taste the Spanish wine (Tinto de Verano, excellent) and then, of course tapas. The best one? Obviously the "queso de cabra", this time with fig jam. You cannot believe how good this dish is.

Per goderci ancora di più l'atmosfera serale "sevillana" decidiamo di... farcela a piedi fino all'hotel. Quasi 4 km, dopo averne macinati una quindicina buoni durante la giornata. Idea brillante il giusto, mettiamola così. Costeggiamo il Guadalquivir fino a raggiungere la ruota panoramica: ci saranno almeno 200-300 ragazzini (dai 12 ai 18 anni) intorno a noi che si divertono, forse anche troppo, tanto che una volante della polizia decide che "può bastare così" e ne arresta qualcuno, mentre gli altri scappano. "Siamo in mezzo ad una retata" commentiamo sorridendo, mentre qualche genitore arrivato sul posto non la prende proprio benissimo. Mai nei nostri viaggi avevamo visto una città così giovanile...

To enjoy the evening atmosphere even more we decide to... to walk to the hotel. Almost 4 km, after having walked for at least 15km during the day. What a choice, maybe the worse ever! Along the Guadalquivir until reaching the Ferris wheel: there are at least 200-300 guys (ages 12 to 18) around us having fun. Well, maybe too much fun: a police man decides that "this is enough" and stops someone, while others are escaping. "Wow, In the middle of a round-up" we are saying , while some parents just arrived at the scene are not so happy. Seville is definitely a young town. Well, don't worry: it's very, very safe.
