Il luogo comune è che le Hawaii siano care. Tutto ciò è vero, ma solo in parte perché, se da una parte i prezzi sono un po' più alti rispetto agli altri 49 stati, dall'altra è pur sempre possibile godersi questo splendido paradiso terrestre senza svenarsi. Tutto cambia però quando si decide di prendere parte a qualche escursione organizzata. Dopo tutto in tutti gli Stati Uniti d'America tutto ciò che è entertainment si paga. E profumatamente anche. Separarsi dunque da 200-300 bei dollaroni è da mettere sostanzialmente in preventivo se non si è disposti ad accontentarsi di tutto ciò che le Hawaii offrono "gratis". Noi, dopo una lunga ricerca, abbiamo deciso che il jolly lo avremmo giocato per l'escursione in Quad nei luoghi di numerosi film e serie tv. E' la terza ed ultima giornata ad Oahu e grande protagonista sarà la costa a nord dell'isola, quella dei surfisti e dell'oceano che, violento, s'infrange sugli scogli e sulle spiagge. Cominceremo dalla parte est e da uno dei luoghi più visitati dell'isola, il Byodo In Temple, situato all'interno di un cimitero (l'ingresso al cimitero è gratuito, quello al tempio è invece a pagamento). Il Byodo In è una fedele riproduzione di un tempio giapponese, circondato da giardini per la meditazione e minuscoli ponti.
The cliché is that Hawaii islands are expensive. All this can be true because prices are a bit 'higher than the other 49 states, but it's always possible to enjoy this beautiful paradise without spending a lot money. After a long research, we decided to play our personal wild card doing the ATV tour in the places of many movies and tv series. This is the third and final day in Oahu and we're going to explore the northern part of the island, that of surfers and violent ocean shattered on the rocks and beaches. Starting from one of the most visited places on the island, the Byodo In Temple, located inside a cemetery (the entrance to the cemetery is free, you'll have to pay for the temple). The Byodo is a faithful reproduction of a Japanese temple surrounded by gardens for meditation and tiny bridges.
Proseguendo lungo il versante est della costa, sicuramente più selvaggio rispetto al sud, incrociamo la città di Kaawa ed il Kualoa Ranch. E' all'interno di questo ranch gestito dalla famiglia Morgan che effettueremo l'escursione, prenotata dall'Italia, sul quad.
Driving along the eastern side of the coast, definitely wilder than the south, we encounter the city of Kaawa and the Kualoa Ranch. In this ranch, run by the Morgan family (they offer many tours), we're going to go on excursion with the ATV
Il ranch offre diverse tipologie di escursioni: kayak, equitazione, snorkeling, barca a vela, ma soprattutto uscite in jeep e quad nei luoghi che hanno segnato la storia della cinematografia delle Hawaii. Lost e Jurassic Park sono stati girati all'interno di questo ranch per la maggior parte della loro durata.
The ranch offers different types of excursions: kayaking, horseback riding, snorkeling, sailing, and above all jeep and quad tour in the places that have marked the history of cinematography of Hawaii. Lost and Jurassic Park were filmed in this ranch for most of the time.

In alta stagione l'escursione di una sola ora costa 85 dollari, 129 quella di due ore. Che poi è quella che noi abbiamo scelto di effettuare. Arrivati al ranch, enorme, facciamo il check in e siamo pronti ad avventurarci con il nostro quad seguendo la guida. Attraversiamo luoghi storici che hanno fatto la storia della cinematografia americana, partendo dalla costa ed avventurandoci poi all'interno dell'isola. Ma sono ovviamente Jurassic Park (e Jurassic World), Lost e Hawai Five-O i due capolavori principe realizzati nel Kualoa Ranch. Anche noi attraversiamo il cancello di Jurassic World.
Jurassic Park (and Jurassic World), Lost and Hawaii Five O are obviously both masterpieces in Kualoa Ranch. Also we even cross the Jurassic World gate.
After the adventure on quad (fortunately theguide has kept a fairly good oace, providing a bit 'of adrenaline) is time to drive along the north coast. The scenic Bway is the number "83", also called Kamehameha Highway, which runs through the towns of Punaluu and Laie (with its Mormon temple and especially the Polynesian Cultural Center, portrayed as an absolute must, but which seems to be the most classic tourist trap) and Kahuku.
I panorami sono molto interessanti, interrotti ogni tanto da qualche chiosco e ristorante dove gustare pesce di ottima qualità. Questo è il regno dei surfisti ed i nomi delle spiagge sono lì a testimoniarlo: su tutte spicca la Banzai Pipeline beach. Per chi volesse invece uno shave ice, la famosa immensa granita delle Hawaii, Matsumoto Shave Ice è il posto giusto. Arrivati a conclusione della "'83" (centro nord dell'isola), non lontano dal mare, viriamo verso sud lungo la 89, prosecuzione di fatto della Kamehameha highway. Sbagliamo ad imboccare una deviazione e finiamo in una zona militare, ma fortunatamente questa volta niente "ramanzina": "Il Dole Pineapple è lungo la "89", lo troverete tra una manciata di miglia" ci spiega il marines appostato di guardia. Già, noi stiamo andando proprio dal re delle banane e dell'ananas, dal signor Dole.

Il Dole Pineapple Visitor Center è un paese dei balocchi per chi ama la frutta e soprattutto ananas. Ce n'è davvero per tutti i gusti e noi optiamo per un cremoso gelato all'ananas (prezzi piuttosto altini), ma per chi volesse c'è a disposizione un trenino con cui raggiungere le piantagioni (anch'esso costosetto), un labirinto (probabilmente il più grande del mondo) e diverse possibilità per spendere un paio d'ore buone all'interno della piantagione
The Dole Pineapple Visitor Center is a land of toys for those who love fruits and especially pineapple. There's something for all tastes and we opt for a creamy ice cream with pineapple (prices aew pretty high), but there is also the possibility to get the train which runs through the plantations (expensive), a maze (probably the largest in the world) and many possibilities to spend a few good hours within the plantation.
Not far from the Dole Pineapple there is finally a historic place of Hawaii and Oahu: the Kukaniloko Birthstone State Monument. At the center of the pineapple plantation, in a forest of eucalyptus trees and coconut palms, there are some rocks where the Hawaiian queens came to give birth. However, there's a entrance fee and we've already spent a lot of money today. We have to come back to Waikiki and spend the final part of the daily budget in a different way. We then find out that's a bad way.
Destinazione California Kitchen per... la pizza hawaiana. Già, perchè anche se nel nostro bel programmino culinario c'era la volontà lasciare la degustazione dei piatti tipici a quando avremmo raggiunto Maui, alla pizza tuttavia non abbiamo saputo resistere. E ovviamente siamo qui per la "hawaian pizza", con ananas, prosciutto e altri ingredienti che la nostra memoria ha prontamente rimosso. Per fortuna solamente metà pizza sarà "hawaian style". Bene, ma non benissimo.
Destination California Kitchen for ... the Hawaiian pizza. Yes, because although in our culinary nice little program there was a willingness to taste the local dishes in Maui, it's to resist the tempation to have pizza.
