A Maui tutto è giovane, a partire dal suo atteggiamento. La maggior parte dei turisti si riversa qui per il suo mare, per l'elevata qualità dei resort e per le tantissime attività che è possibile effettuare nella seconda isola per grandezza della dorsale hawaiana. Ma Maui è anche e soprattutto molto altro. Ed è per questo che le abbiamo concesso un giorno in più (4 interi ed una mezza giornata), perchè consapevoli che avrebbe potuto regalarci qualcosina in più rispetto alla pur splendida Oahu. Gli aerei della compagnia "Hawaian" che collegano le varie isole sono una sorta di "taxi" e durante il tragitto una voce registrata racconta alcune delle peculiarità delle isole hawaiane. Un modo piacevole per trascorrere la mezz'ora di volo che separa Honolulu e Kahului, dove ha sede l'aereoporto principale dell'isola di Maui.
Everything is young in Maui, starting from its attitude. Most tourists come here for its sea, for the high quality of lodging and resorts and the many activities that you can do in the second largest island of the Hawaiian ridge. Anyway Maui is also and above all much more. That's why we decided to spend one more day here (four and a half day), because we already knew that this island could have given us something more than the even beautiful Oahu. The planes of "Hawaian" which connect the various islands are a sort of "taxi" and during the flight a recorded voice tells about some of the peculiarities of the Hawaiian Islands. A pleasant way to spend the half-hour flight that separates Honolulu from Kahului, home to the main airport of the island of Maui.

E che l'Aloha Spirit qui aleggi maggiormente lo intuiamo immediatamente, quando al rental cars stranamente non usciamo "sconfitti", ma addirittura con un upgrade gratuito. Invece della solita utilitaria (disponibilità terminata) ci offrono la mustang. Bianca.

Kaanapali is probably the best area if you're looking for a hotel or a resort. Also because it's very close to a very beautiful town.

Parliamo di Lahaina, nord ovest dell'isola. Le case tipiche del New England, in un contesto puramente hawaiano fatto di montagne verdi ed alte, palme e anche la statua di Budda più grande al di fuori dell'Asia. E poi la storia, splendida della città, fatta di re e regine e di baleniere che, a partire dal 1 ottobre 1819, fecero di Lahaina il principale punto di approdo della flotta americana nel Pacifico. Tra i marinai che sbarcarono nel 1849, alla vigilia di violente rivolte che scossero la città, c'era anche tale Herman Melville che stava raccogliendo spunti per i suoi racconti su Moby Dick, Typee e Bily Budd. Difficilmente rimarrete indifferenti davanti a Lahaina. Parcheggiate appena fuori dal centro in uno dei tanti parcheggi gratuiti ed esploratela, assaggiando "il miglior pesce dell'isola" e visitando le varie gallerie d'arte che, soprattutto il venerdì notte, si animano. Le baleniere ormai non ci sono più, ma le balene continuano ad aggirarsi nei paraggi.
This is Lahaina, northwest of the island. Typical New England style houses, in a purely Hawaiian environment made of green and high mountains, palm trees and also the largest statue of Buddha outside of Asia. And then the story of the city, made of kings, queens, princesses and whalers that, as of October 1, 1819, made Lahaina the main point of call of the American fleet in the Pacific. Among the sailors who landed in 1849, on the eve of violent riots that shook the city, there was also Herman Melville who was gathering ideas for his stories on Moby Dick, Typee and Bily Budd. You will enjoy everything about Lahaina. Just find a park outside the main streets in a free parking lot and explore the town, taste"the best fish of the island" and visit the various art galleries, especially on a Friday night. There are no more whalers, but whales are still around this magical town.
LAHAINA, COSA VEDERE?
Partendo dalla Baldwin Home, un palazzo del 1834, e dal vicino Masters Reading Room, siamo già nella via principale, Front Street, fatta di gallerie, ristoranti e bar con terrazza. Non lontano dal Lahaina Courthouse, che ora ospita una galleria d'arte, ammiriamo il più grande baniano degli Stati Uniti. Talmente grande che la sua ombra copre quasi mezzo ettaro.
Starting from the Baldwin Home, a palace built in 1834, and the Masters Reading Room, we are already in the main street, called Front Street, made up of galleries, restaurants and bars with terraces. Not far from the Lahaina Courthouse, which now houses an art gallery, we admire the biggest banyan in the United States. So bigger that its shadow covers almost half a hectare.
Imperdibili sono anche la missione di Hongwnji (tempio buddista del 1927) e l'esotico Wo Hing Temple. Al termine di Front Street invece, girando a sinistra lungo Ala Moana Street, incontriamo, all'interno della Lahaina Jodo Mission, anche il più grande Buddha al di fuori del continente asiatico.
You shouldn't miss also the Hongwnji mission (Buddhist temple of 1927) and the exotic Wo Hing Temple. At the end of Front Street, turn left along Ala Moana Street and admire in the Lahaina Jodo Mission also the largest Buddha outside the Asian continent.
Ma Lahaina è speciale soprattutto a fine giornata. Cominciare la passeggiata un'ora prima del tramonto ci fa assaporare tutto il fascino di questa cittadina. Qui il tramonto è un qualcosa che vale da solo il prezzo del biglietto. Noi faremo il possibile e l'impossibile per non perderlo sostanzialmente ogni sera.
But Lahaina is mainly special in the evening. Begin the walk one hour before sunset makes us enjoy all the charm of this town. Sunset is amazing in here. We will do the possible and the impossible to not miss it substantially every night.
Front Street si riempie e le barche si mettono in posizione: nessuno sembra voler perdersi questo splendido spettacolo della natura. Il sole si nasconde dietro l'oceano regalandoci uno spettacolo che difficilmente dimenticheremo.
Front Street fills up and the boats are all in the middle of the ocean: nobody don't want to miss this wonderful spectacle of nature. The sun is hiding behind the ocean giving us a show that we hardly forget.
Come difficilmente dimenticheremo il "seafood" di Lahaina. In particolare quello dello spartano (ed economico) Paia Fish Market. Se cercate la qualità a buon mercato, "this is the place". Non mancano però neppure le catene come Hard Rock Cafè e Bubba Gump e non manca neppure un carinissimo outlet situato proprio dietro l'Hard Rock Cafè a due passi dal mare: il "The Outlets of Maui".
We will also hardly forget Lahaina's seafood. In particular that of the Spartan (and cheap) Paia Fish Market. If you look for quality cheap, this is the place. There are also some chains-restaurants like Hard Rock Cafe and Bubba Gump and even an outlet located just behind the Hard Rock Cafe: the "The Outlets of Maui".
