Eastern Sierra Nevada, the huge mountain range that divides California and Nevada and leads to Reno, the main city of northern Nevada, is a special place for a change of plan. You'll encounter the desert on the right, the mountain range on the left and many amazing places in the middle, more or less hidden, which make this stage as amazing as the previous two. Una volta incrociata la "California 270" svolta a sinistra e continuare per 10 miglia lungo l'ennesima strada sterrata che vi catapulterà indietro di cento anni. No, da questo momento non saremo più negli anni 2000, bensì nel 1859...
We are going to travel along the California-Nevada boundary basically throughout the day till reaching Susanville, a tiny town not far from the highlight of the next day, the Lassen Volcanic National Park. anyway, first of all we have to talk about one of the main attractions of the entire area along with the majestic Lake Tahoe. To do this you need to make a detour just fifteen miles south of Bridgeport, along the "395". then turn left on "California 270" and continue for 10 miles along another unpaved road that will catapult you back in time. Stiamo per scoprirlo, perchè di cose da vedere a Bodie ce ne sono moltissime e scopriremo solo sul posto che quasi un'intera mattinata scorrerà via in quella che un centinaio di anni fa era uno dei crocevia del vecchio e selvaggio west. C’è qualcosa di magico anche nel solo percorrere gli ultimi tratti della polverosa strada che conduce al Bodie Historic State Park (orari estivi: 9-18, ingresso 8 euro a persona).

You'll need an entire morning to visit a very special place in the world, a town which was one of the crossroads of the old wild west one hundred years ago. There is something magical about just walking through the last stretches of the dusty road leading to the Bodie Historic State Park (summer timetables: 9 am-6 pm, entrance fee: 8 euros per person).

Eppure alla fine del XIX secolo, Bodie era tutto tranne che una ghost town. La città era una fiorente comunità mineraria con circa 10.000 abitanti e possedeva i servizi e le attrazioni delle maggiori città, tra cui due banche, una banda musicale, la ferrovia, molti giornali e anche una prigione. Ben 65 saloon caratterizzavano la main street e, ovviamente, omicidi, sparatorie, risse da osteria e assalti alle diligenze erano all'ordine del giorno. A Bodie esisteva un quartiere cinese che arrivò a contare centinaia di residenti ed era dotato di un tempio taoista. Come in altre città minerarie c'era anche un popolare quartiere a luci rosse, all'estremo nord dell'abitato.
Yet at the end of the nineteenth century, Bodie was everything except a ghost town. The city was a thriving mining community with about 10,000 inhabitants and had all the services and attractions of major cities, including two banks, a music band, railroads, many newspapers and even a prison. 65 saloon featured the main street and, of course, murder, shooting and assaults on diligence were on the agenda. There was also a Chinese neighborhood with more than hundreds of people and there was even a Taoist temple. Like the other mining towns, there was also a popular red light district, at the very far north of Bodie.

Once the gold runs out, Bodie experienced a downfall. Yet it maintained a permanent population for many years in the twentieth century, even after the fire that devastated most of its economic centers in 1932. As time went on, however, citizens have slowly disappeared as the gold and, about half a century ago, the last residents moved and left Bodie, leaving the uninhabited buildings and at the mercy of the desert and the cold of the winter months.
Cosa visitare a Bodie? Sostanzialmente tutto. C'è una città intera da esplorare, nonostante i diversi terremoti che hanno messo a serio rischio alcuni dei già fragili edifici dell'ex città mineraria, all'interno del Bodie Historical State Park. Una guida, acquistabile a parte, vi spiegherà ogni singolo edificio, ma il solo passeggiare per le sue vie polverose saprà regalarvi grandi emozioni. E c'è una leggenda del tutto particolare, che meglio spiega quello che cento anni fa era Bodie. Una ragazza, la cui famiglia si stava trasferendo da San Francisco proprio a Bodie, scrisse dell'imminente approdo nella Sierra Nevada nel suo diario “Good, by God, I’m going to Bodie”. La seconda versione è “Goodbye God, I’m going to Bodie". Già, esistono due versioni. Quale sarà quella vera?
What to Visit in Bodie? Basically everything. There is a whole city to explore, despite the various earthquakes that have seriously jeopardized some of the fragile buildings of the former mining town, within the Bodie Historical State Park. A guide, which can be purchased separately, explains every single building and just walking through its dusty streets will give you a lot of emotions. There is even a very particular legend that best describes what one hundred years ago was Bodie. It's a story about a little girl whose family was moving from San Francisco to Bodie; Depending on who tells it, she wrote in her diary either: “Good, by God, I’m going to Bodie”-or-“Goodbye God, I’m going to Bodie”. Which is the truth?
Negozi, alberghi e case sono conservati con cura: le troverete con lo stesso aspetto che ebbero il giorno in cui l'ultimo abitante se ne andò proprio per avere lo stesso aspetto del giorno in cui Bodie cessò di esistere.Vecchi veicoli e distributori di benzina e il cimitero solitario danno un’immagine di vita e di morte in questo remoto angolo dell’alto deserto californiano che richiama ogni giorno tantissimi visitatori. Intravederete anche la scuola, con i libri lasciati sui banchi, il motel ed i saloon dell'epoca. Un viaggio indietro con la mente di almeno cento anni è inevitabile...
Stores, hotels and homes are carefully preserved: All looking exactly as they did then, when the last inhabitant left the town and Bodie became a ghost town. Cars, gas station and the lonely graveyard gives an image of life and death in this remote corner of the California High Desert that boasts many visitors every day. You will also notice the school, with the books on the benches, the motel and the mayor saloon. A journey through time with your mind is just inevitable ...
Non lontano da Bodie e dalla cittadina di Bridgeport, ci sarebbe un altro luogo del tutto particolare, Travertine Hot Springs, una piscina termale naturale con vista sulla Sierra Nevada, molto amata dagli abitanti della contea di Mono. Non esistono "fee" per l'ingresso, la hot springs è "naturale" ed è consentito l'accesso a chiunque. (Jack Sawyer Rd., Bridgeport). Doveste avere più tempo rispetto a noi, Travertine Hot Springs potrebbe essere una chicca da non perdere, così come il bellissimo Lake Tahoe che, come le hot springs, era parte del nostro programma originario. Lake Tahoe che è situato per metà in California e per metà in Nevada. Avremmo dovuto raggiungere la bellissima Emerald Bay con il suo State Park, ma non avevamo calcolato che nei week end estivi il lago è letteralmente preso d'assalto non solo dagli abitanti del luogo ma anche dai turisti americani che arrivano dalle grandi città come Sacramento, San Francisco e anche Los Angeles. D'altronde Lake Tahoe, con le sue acque blu balneabili, è una sorta di paradiso. Avevamo anche programmato un trail (va ottenuto un permesso scritto dal ranger), l'eagle falls trail che regala viste bellissime sulla baia (Emerald Bay) e sulle montagne della Sierra. Il consiglio che diamo è quello di pernottare almeno una notte a Lake Tahoe per godersi davvero le bellezze del territorio. E per chi ama rilassarsi nelle acque cristalline è la zona di Zephyr Cove quella perfetta e ricca di resort.
Not far from Bodie Ghost Town and the town of Bridgeport, there's another very special place, called Travertine Hot Springs, a natural hot spring with an amazing view on Sierra Nevada mountains, a kind of paradise for Mono County inhabitants. There is no "entry fee", the hot spring is "natural" and anyone is allowed to get into the hot water (Jack Sawyer Rd., Bridgeport). If you have more time to spend in this area, Travertine Hot Springs could be the ice on the cake, as well as the beautiful Lake Tahoe which was part of our original schedule. Lake Tahoe, blue as a topaz and circled by majestic peaks, this High Sierra gem straddling the California-Nevada border is a bucket list essential. We should have reached the beautiful Emerald Bay with its State Park, but we did not calculate that in the summer weekends the lake is literally full of locals and tourist coming from the mayor cities of the west coast. Besides Lake Tahoe, with its blue bathing water, is a kind of paradise. We also planned a trail (a ranger's permission must be obtained), the eagle falls trail that gives beautiful views on the bay (Emerald Bay) and the Sierra Mountains, but it's definitely too late. The advice is to spend at least one night at Lake Tahoe to really enjoy the beauties of this area. And for those who like to relax in crystal clear waters, in the Zephyr Cove area you can also find many resorts and spend an amazing weekend.

Noi, che invece una notte non possiamo spenderla sul lago, ci "accontentiamo" di visitare una cittadina del tutto particolare, situata proprio poco dopo aver varcato nuovamente il confine con il Nevada. Siamo a Genoa, il più antico insediamento in Nevada. Arrivarono i mormoni per primi qui e la chiamarono Mormon Station. Dobbiamo risalire al 1861, quando i pionieri mormoni arrivato in questo territorio a ridosso del Lake Tahoe. Per diversi anni Mormon City fu anche la capitale dello stato e, solamente parecchi anni dopo venne ribattezzata Genoa, in onore di Cristoforo Colombo e della città di Genova, a testimonianza, l'ennesima, che tra "noi" e "loro" c'è sempre un grado di separazione.We can not spend the night on the lake, this is the reason why we're now in a special little town located just shortly after crossing the Nevada border. This is Genoa, the oldest settlement in Nevada. The Mormons get there first and called the town Mormon Station. We have to go back to 1861 when the Mormon pioneers arrived in this area near Lake Tahoe. For several years Mornon City was also the capital of the state. After many years it has been renamed Genoa, in honor of Christopher Columbus and the city of Genova, to testify that there's always a legacy between the United States and Italy.
Why is it Genoa and not Genova? We asked the gentle lady at a sort of "visitor center" located in a small corner. "Well, we are americans and can not pronounce Genova ... for this reason you are in Genoa (with the accent on the letter " o "), and not in Genova" (accent on the letter "e") . Genòa is better, definitely better.
Genoa è una delle cittadine più belle che troverete in Nevada. E' piccola, molto piccola (circa 300 abitanti), il che la rende poco più di una ghost town, ma è molto viva, con locali all'aperto e tanta musica. E non mancano neppure le attrazioni, come il Mormon Station State Park Museum, il Genoa Courthouse Museum e, alcuni degli edifici che hanno scritto la storia del Nevada. Il più bello? Sicuramente il Thirst Parlor, il più antico "thirst parlor" del Nevada (nel video potrete ammirarlo nel suo splendore). Ah, che non vi venga in mente di entrare nel saloon con un cavallo, è ancora severamente vietato e c'è tanto di cartello a ricordarvelo. Solo in America...Genoa is one of the most beautiful town you will find in Nevada. It is small, very small (about 300 inhabitants), which makes it little more than a ghost town but is very lively. E' il giorno delle cittadine particolari. Per una volta niente natura, ma luoghi che recitano (o hanno recitato) un ruolo da protagonista lungo la Sierra Nevada. Ce n'è un'altra del tutto particolare, non lontana da Genoa, e che di fatto è la città più importante del Nevada. No, non è Las Vegas e neppure Reno, bensì Carson City, la capitale dello stato nonostante i soli 55.000 abitanti. Carson City durante la propria storia fu un crocevia per l'estrazione dell'argento (in città è possibile visitare anche il museo, nella quale è presente la prima zecca utilizzata in Nevada) ed ora è una ridente città fatta di locali, case molto carine ed ovviamente... lo State Capitol, simbolo dell'intera città, edificato completamente con pietra arenaria e sede centrale del tribunale, della Corte Suprema e di completissimi archivi e biblioteche di Stato.
This is a particular day. Forget about nature, it's time to explore some nice towns and cities along the Sierra Nevada. Not far from Genoa there's one of the most important cities in Nevada: no, we're not talking about Las Vegas and not even about Reno, but Carson City, Nevada's capital. During its history Carson City has been a crossroads for silver extraction (there's a museum in downtown) and is now a beautiful city made of bars, pretty houses and of course ... the State Capitol, the symbol of the whole city, completely built with sandstone, headquarters of the the Supreme Court and the state libraries.
L'ultima tappa prima di arrivare a Susanville è Reno. Siamo sempre nel Nevada, in una sorta di brutta copia di Las Vegas. Deve la sua fama alla combinazione divertimento-natura, offrendo così un pacchetto turistico più completo rispetto a quello della "vicina" Las Vegas. Il primo casinò negli USA vide luce proprio a Reno, ed il fatto che nelle vicinanze si trovi il lago Topaz, nel bel mezzo di un'area desertica, la rende appetibile agli occhi di qualche turista. Qui però si viene sostanzialmente per due motivi, il gioco d'azzardo oppure o i divorzi. Già, i divorzi. E se il gioco d'azzardo è una normalità nel Nevada (non mancano i casinò e gli hotel di un certo livello con annessi i casinò), sorprende come la città di Reno sia la capitale americana dei divorzi. La città è famosissima ormai in tutto il mondo per la rapidità dei contratti di divorzio matrimoniale, in contrapposizione ai matrimoni rapidi che si celebrano nell'eterna rivale Las Vegas. E sono tanti gli americani che, tra una puntatina alla roulette e una al black jack, colgono l'occasione per effettuare un "divorzio lampo". Siamo sempre in America, nulla ormai ci sorprende più. Noi tuttavia preferiamo la tranquillità di Susanville, California, dove di fronte al nostro motel intravediamo anche due cervi, per nulla impauriti da persone e auto. L'America che amiamo è decisamente questa...
The last stop before reaching Susanville is the city Reno. This is still Nevada and with a population of over 235,000, Reno is the largest city in Northern Nevada. It is located in the southern part of Washoe County, nestled on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in an area called the Truckee Meadows. Known as "The Biggest Little City in the World" Reno is famous for its hotels and casinos, as the birthplace of Harrah's Entertainment and because it can offer a fun-nature combination. There are two major reasons to come to Reno, gambling and divorces. Divorces? Yes, right! If gambling is a kind of "must" in Nevada, surprisingly Reno is also the american capital of divorces. Nevada, Reno in particular, became famous as the divorce capital in the 1940s and 1950s. It had a residency requirement of only six weeks, and the courts were quite accommodating in granting divorce decrees without a lot of acrimonious hearings. Las Vegas was a wide place in the road then, and Reno was where the night life was. However, we still prefer the tranquility of Susanville, California, where we're spending the night. In front of our room's door there are two deers... this is "our" America!
