Dopo tanto ovest è giunto il momento di portarvi nel sud degli Stati Uniti, dove il selvaggio lascia spazio alla storia, dove la guerra di secessione sembra non essere mai terminata e le storie degli schiavi nelle piantagioni di cotone ti riportano indietro di cento anni, dove città incantevoli s'intersecano con storie di fantasmi... No, è vero che parliamo sempre di Stati Uniti d'America ma est (ed in particolare sud-est) ed ovest sono lontani anni luce. E, anche se il west rimane oggettivamente imbattibile, il "mini on the road" natalizio tra Georgia, nord della Florida, South Carolina ed un pizzico di North Carolina, ha saputo regalarci grandissime sorprese. Un viaggio che, tralasciando la breve puntatina a Boston per assistere al match Nba tra Boston Celtics e Chicago Bulls (consigliamo il video in fondo al post per assaporarne la "magia") in uno dei templi della pallacanestro, il Boston Garden, comincia proprio da Georgia e dalla sua città simbolo, Atlanta. E dal suo downtown, che visiteremo prima di percorrere i 400 km ed oltre che ci separano da Valdosta, l'ultima cittadina di una certa rilevanza prima di sconfinare in Florida.

After so much west the time has come for us to experience the south of the United States, where the wild leaves room for history, where the secession war never seems to be really over end and the stories of slaves into the plantations take you back in time, where enchanting cities intersect with ghost stories ... Well, it is true that we are still talking about the United States of America but east (and in particular south-east) is light years away from the west. And, even if the west still remains objectively unbeatable, the short "Christmas on the road" across Georgia, North Florida, South Carolina and a pinch of North Carolina, has been able to give us amazing surprises. A trip that, ignoring the brief stop in Boston for the NBA match between Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls in one of the basketball temples, the Boston Garden, starts right from Georgia and its symbolic city, Atlanta. And from its downtown, which we visit before traveling the 400 km and beyond that separate Atlanta from Valdosta, the last town of a certain importance before entering Florida.

COSA VEDERE AD ATLANTA - THINGS TO SEE IN ATLANTA

Essendo atterrati all'Aeroporto Internazionale di Atlanta-Hartsfield-Jackson all'ora di pranzo , possiamo dedicare ad Atlanta solamente qualche ora e le solite scelte dolorose ci portano a rinunciare sia al Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park che agli studi della CNN, due dei tre luoghi imperdibili della città. Non possiamo però rinunciare ad un altro sei simboli della città, il World of Coca Cola Museum, situato proprio nel cuore di downtown, all'interno del Pemberton Place, un'area di 80.000 metri quadri che comprende Il World Of Coca Cola (17 dollari), il Georgia Acquarium ed il Center for Civil and Human Rights. John Pemberton, lo conosciamo tutti, è il famoso farmacista che inventò la formula della Coca Cola...

As we landed in Atlanta-at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport at lunchtime, we can only spend a few hours visiting the city and the usual painful choices lead us to renounce both the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park and the CNN Center, two of the three unmissable places in Atlanta. Anyway we can't really miss another special place of the city, the World of Coca Cola Museum, located right in the heart of downtown, inside the Pemberton Place, an area of ​​80,000 square meters that includes The World Of Coca Cola ($ 17 ), the Georgia Acquarium and the Center for Civil and Human Rights. We all know that John Pemberton is the famous pharmacist who invented the Coca Cola formula ...

LA STORIA DELLA COCA COLA - THE COCA COLA HISTORY

Era l'8 maggio del 1886 quando John Pemberton inventò la bevanda che cambiò sostanzialmente il mondo. Ad essere onesti non solo era leggermente diversa da quella a cui siamo abituati, ma il suo scopo era quello di curare il mal di schiena e la stanchezza. Il primo nome che venne dato alla bevanda fu "Pemberton's French Wine Coca", perchè di fatto era una miscela di vino e foglie di coca che aveva già avuto largo successo in Europa. Il vino fu successivamente sostituito dalle noci di cola, una pianta tropicale reputata non dannosa per la salute, la Pemberton's French Wine Coca divenne l'attuale coca cola. La bevanda contiene un aroma, chiamato "7X" che proviene dalle piante di coca coltivate in Perù. Le foglie sono poi esportate in New Jersey, dove la Stepan Company, sotto l'egida dell'ente antinarcotici statunitense DEA, provvede a ottenere l'estratto aromatico decocainizzato, la cui produzione è interamente acquistata dalla The Coca-Cola Company. E l'Italia? La bevanda arrivò solamente nel 1960 (in lattina), vent'anni dopo venne importata anche quella in bottiglia.

It was May 8, 1886 when John Pemberton invented the drink that substantially changed the world. To be honest, it was not only slightly different from what we're used to, but it was intended to treat back pain and fatigue. The first name that was given to the drink was "Pemberton's French Wine Coca", because in fact it was a mixture of wine and coca leaves that had already had great success in Europe. The wine was subsequently replaced by cola nuts, a tropical plant not harmful to health, Pemberton's French Wine Coca became the current coca cola. The drink contains an aroma called "7X" that comes from coca plants grown in Peru. The leaves are then exported to New Jersey, where the Stepan Company, under the aegis of the US antinarcotics agency (DEA), obtains the decocainized aromatic extract: the production of which is entirely purchased by The Coca-Cola Company. And what about Italy? The drink only arrived in 1960 (cans), twenty years later we also imported the bottles.

Il museo si divide in due piani. Non appena avrete superato i controlli si aprirà davanti a voi il "Mondo Coca Cola" e cosa c'è di meglio di un assaggio della mitica bevanda inventata da Pemberton? Vi verrà consegnata una piccola lattina e da quel momento effettuerete un viaggio nella storia della bibita partendo dal "the Loft", una sala nella quale sarai circondato da affascinanti oggetti di ieri e di oggi.

The museum is divided into two floors. As soon as you have passed the security checks, the World of Coca Cola" appears in front of you. And what's better than a taste of the legendary drink invented by Pemberton? You will be given a small can and it means that you're definitely ready to start the tour.  It begins at the "the Loft", a room where you're be surrounded by fascinating objects of yesterday and today.

Vi scenderà qualche lacrima quando guarderete il filmato "Momenti di felicità legati alla coca cola" nel Coca Cola Theater e saluterete il mitico John Pemberton nel "Vault of the Secret formula", ovvero il caveau dove è strettamente sorvegliata la leggendaria formula segreta di Coca Cola.

You'll be probably crying while watching the short movie "celebration of life's moments of happiness"in the Coca Cola Theater and then say hello to the legendary John Pemberton in the "Vault of the Secret formula", where the legendary secret Coca Cola formula is closely watched.

La visita del primo piano si concluderà al "Milestone Refreshment", dove potrai esplorare la storia di The Coca Cola Company e al "Bottle Works", da dove potrai osservare il processo di imbottigliamento.

The visit to the first floor will end at "Milestone Refreshment", where you can explore the history of The Coca Cola Company, and at the "Bottle Works", from where you can observe the bottling process.

Al secondo piano del museo, nel "4D Theater", uno scenziato eccentrico vi guiderà in un'esperienza video multisensoriale alla ricerca della formula segreta, mentre un altro teatro, il Perfect Pauses Theater, mostra i migliori spot legati alla bevanda.

On the second floor of the museum, in the "4D Theater", an eccentric scientist will guide you through a multisensory video experience in search of the secret formula, while another theater, the Perfect Pauses Theater, shows the best spots related to the drink.

Il finale non può che essere dedicato agli acquisti e soprattutto, al taste (gratuito) di moltissime bevande del marchio coca cola. Potrete scegliere in quale continente fermarvi e sperimentare tutte le varianti della bibita (e degli altri brand targati Coca Cola Company) che sono offerte in giro per il mondo. Scoprirete bevande che non conoscerete perchè non presenti nel mercato italiano ed avrete voglia di assaggiarle tutte. Alcune sono davvero molto strane. In Sud America, per esempio, abbiamo sperimentato la "Fanta Colita". Il suo gusto? Simile al ghiacciolo all'amarena...

You will discover drinks that you've never heard because they are not offered in your country and you will want to taste them all. Some are really very strange. In South America, for example, we have experienced the "Fanta Colita". 

I LUOGHI DI THE WALKING DEAD - THE WALKING DEAD LOCATIONS

Se siete amanti del celebre telefilm "The Walking Dead", l'avventura in una Georgia ben poco turistica, ma al contempo decisamente affascinante, dove la campagna e le piccole cittadine vi riportano in un'America lontana anni luce da quella ammirata nei film, non vi spaventerà di certo. E' vero che alcune delle locations del telefilm sono situate ad Atlanta, ma è nei dintorni di Senoia, un piccolo paesino disperso nelle campagne dello stato, che gli zombie vagano senza meta ed i superstiti costruiscono i loro villaggi. Con il poco tempo a disposizione abbiamo scelto di visitarne solo alcuni, a parer nostro i più significativi (su internet troverete ulteriori info legate agli altri luoghi, secondari, della serie). Il tour comincia dalle locations di Atlanta e quindi da Terminus, all'angolo tra Ormon St SE e SW, uno dei luoghi che nelle prime stagioni ha decisamente svolto un ruolo importante nella serie. Nonostante sia un'area privata, all'angolo tra Doane ST SW e Windsor ST SW è possibile superare le recinzioni ed avvicinarsi a quella che nella realtà è una fabbrica. La zona non è bellissima, ma non pericolosa.

If you love the famous TV series "The Walking Dead" you jave to go on a pilgrimage to all the series locations. Where? Well, you'll have to travel along a Georgia not very touristy, but at the same time very fascinating, where the countryside and the small towns make you experience a different America. It is true that some of the locations of the show are located in Atlanta, but it is in the vicinity of Senoia, a small village dispersed in the countryside of the state, that zombies wander aimlessly and the survivors build their villages. It's already late afternoon, it means that we could visit only few places, the most significant in our opinion. The tour starts from the locations of Atlanta and then from Terminus, on the corner of Ormon St SE and SW, one of the places that in the first seasons has definitely played an important role. Despite being a private area, on the corner between Doane ST SW and Windsor ST SW you can overcome the fences and get closer to what is actually a factory. The area is not so beautiful, but it's definitely not dangerous.

Decisamente più carina (e residenziale) quella dove sorgono le case di Rick e Morgan (rispettivamente al 813 Cherokee Ave SE e 376 Ormond St SE), situate non lontano una dall'altra a ridosso di Grant Park. (da sinistra a destra: la casa di Morgan e quella di Rick).

Tra le cose da vedere ad Atlanta sono diverse quelle che rimandano alla celebre serie tv. E ce n'è una di immagine, in particolare, che difficilmente un fan di The Walking Dead si toglierà dalla mente. Siamo agli inizi della serie e Rick Grimes, a cavallo, entra in città percorrendo la desolatissima Freedom Parkway. Il ponte che dovrete cercare è il Jackson Street Bridge (Jackson St Ne) dove troverete sicuramente diversi turisti (e locali) che vorranno come voi scattare una foto. Il simbolo di The Walking Dead è proprio questo...

Among the things to see in Atlanta, many of them are connected to the famous TV series. And there's one image, in particular, that a Walking Dead fan will hardly remove from his mind. This is the very beginning of the series and Rick Grimes, on horseback, enters the city along the desolated Freedom Parkway. The bridge you need to look for is the Jackson Street Bridge (Jackson St Ne) where you will certainly find several tourists (and locals). That's the symbol of The Walking Dead...

Quaranta miglia a sud di Atlanta, nel cuore delle campagne del "Peach State", ovvero il nick name della Georgia, c'è una cittadina che ai più non dirà nulla, ma che di fatto è la "Mecca" degli aficionados di The Walking Dead. Parliamo di Senoia che, a proposito di "nicknames", è conosciuta anche come "the perfect setting for life". Deve essere stato sicuramente la tranquillità che aleggia nella minuscola cittadina a spingere autori e sceneggiatori a sceglierla come location principale per ambientare la serie tv.

Forty miles south of Atlanta, in the heart of the "Peach State" countryside, there is a small town that you won't probably recongnize. Anyway you have to know that this is a kind of Mecca for The Walkind Dead lovers. We are talking about Senoia, which is also known as "the perfect setting for life". It must certainly have been the tranquility that hovers in the tiny town to push authors and screenwriters to choose it as the main location to set the TV series.

Tutto o quasi qui ricorda The Walking Dead, anche i "cafes", ma purtroppo è tutto desolatamente chiuso essendo la vigilia di Natale. O forse è giusto così, fa molto... "The Walking Dead".

Almost everything here reminds The Walking Dead, even the "cafes", but unfortunately it is all desolately closed being Christmas Eve. Anyway that's the perfect atmosphere, is this The Walking Dead or not? 

Ma è nella parte a sud di downtown che è racchiuso il meglio. Attorno a Morgan Street le barriere di lamiera segnano il confine, come nello show, con l'inaccessibile Alexandria. Tutto è come nel telefilm, ad eccezion fatta per i tanti cartelli "no trespassing" che invitano i tanti turisti che la visitano a non addentrarsi al suo interno.

But it's south of downtown where you can admire the best of The Walkind Dead. Around Morgan Street the sheet metal barriers mark the border, as in the show, with the inaccessible Alexandria. Everything is like in the series, with the exception of the many "no trespassing" signs that invite the many tourists who visit it not to go inside.

Ci sono anche i binari del treno, in disuso, gli stessi che i superstiti hanno percorso più e più volte. Nonostante sia la vigilia di Natale sono tanti i curiosi che si avvicinano ad "Alexandria", chiedendosi dove siano gli altri luoghi sacri del più importante telefilm legato agli zombie. Non lontano, la Raleigh Studios custodisce, infatti, la fattoria di Hershel, la prigione, la tana dei salvatori ed anche il bosco dove Negan per la prima volta ha mostrato a Rick ed agli altri Lucille.

There are also the disused train tracks, the same ones that the survivors have traveled over and over again. Despite being the Christmas Eve, there are many curious people who come to "Alexandria", wondering where the other sacred sites of the most important TV series related to the zombies are located. Not far from here, the Raleigh Studios guards, in fact, the farm of mister Hershel, the prison, the lair of the saviors and also the forest where Negan for the first time showed Lucille to Rick and the others.

2017 XMAS TRIP - THE SOUTH-EAST: Georgia, Northern Florida, South Carolina and much more (day 2: from Valdosta to Orlando: Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area)

Non è raro che in un on the road lungo la south-east coast il viaggiatore si trovi a dover riempire il "buco", molto grande, che separa Atlanta, città principale della Georgia, con Orlando, il primo grande polo attrattivo della Florida. Dalle campagne del "Peach State" ai laghi paludosi del "Sunshine State", quasi 700 km che, se non preparati nel migliore dei modi, possono anche risultare monotoni. Eppure di cose da vedere tra Atlanta e Orlando ce ne sono moltissime, basta solo saper scegliere ed avere anche un pizzico di fortuna. Quella che, nel nostro on the road, complice il periodo poco fortunato (a ridosso del Natale), non sempre abbiamo avuto. Ci eravamo lasciati a Valdosta, poco prima di entrare in Florida, dopo aver visitato i luoghi di The Walking Dead, ed è proprio dalla città con fortissimi legami con l'Italia che ripartiamo. Valdosta è il capoluogo della contea di Lowndes ed è soprannominata "Azalea City" (il Festival delle Azalee si svolge ogni anno a marzo). Fu fondata il 7 dicembre 1860 e prende il nome da quello della tenuta dell'ex governatore George Troup che a sua volta deriva dalla regione italiana della Valle d'Aosta. Sì, c'è sempre un grado di separazione tra "noi" e "loro"...

It is not uncommon that in an on the road along the south-east coast, a traveler has to cover many miles coming from Atlanta, the Georgia's main city, towards Orlando, Florida's first major attraction. From the "Peach State" campaigns to the "Sunshine State" swampy lakes. Almost 500 miles, which can also be monotonous if you don't find some interesting stops along the way. You've to know that there are many things to see between Atlanta and Orlando, just a question of making right decisions. And also have a bit of luck. In fact, we haven't been that lucky during our trip, because of the weather and also because it was Christmas Time... We left you in Valdosta, just before entering Florida, after visiting the Walking Dead's locations: it's time to resume our trip from a city with a strong connection with Italy. Valdosta is, in fact, the county seat of Lowndes County and called the Azalea City, as the plant grows in profusion there. The city hosts an annual Azalea Festival in March. It was founded on 7 December 1860 and takes its name from that of the estate of the former governor George Troup, which derives from the Italian region of Valle d'Aosta. Yes, there's always something "italian" in the United States...

Ma è ad una quindicina di chilometri a nord-est che la città offre il suo meglio (4661 Knights Academy Rd, Valdosta), lungo una strada sterrata che condurrà ad una sorta di "T - intersection", giunti alla quale dovrete svoltare a sinistra. Dove siamo? Al Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA, ingresso gratuito), 1350 acri di paludi che fanno parte di un complesso ancora più grande di terre paludosi (18.000 acri) chiamato Carolina Bay, la seconda palude boscosa più grande dello stato dopo la Okefenokee Swamp.

Anyway, it is about fifteen kilometers north-east of Valdosta where the entire area offers its best (4661 Knights Academy Rd, Valdosta), along a dirt road that will lead to a sort of "T-intersection", where you'll have to turn left . Where are we? At the Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA, free admission), which encompasses 2,623 acres of state-owned property and 5,874 acres of land under license from the U.S. Air Force. The WMA consists of approximately 3,059 acres of upland pine and hardwood forest and 5,438 acres of cypress/gum wetlands. Grand Bay totals 1,350 acres and is part of a 18,000-acre wetlands complex of Carolina bays and forested swamp second in size only to Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia.

Grand Bay WMA si trova in un'area conosciuta come "flatwoods" e diversi acri sono di proprietà dell'Aeronautica Statunitense ed in particolare dalla Moody Air Force. Prima di visitarla, dunque, controllate che non siano in programma sessioni di training che, come succede ad esempio anche al White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, fanno sì che il parco resti chiuso.

Grand Bay WMA is located in an area known as "flatwoods" and several acres are owned by the US Air Force and in particular by the Moody Air Force. Therefore, before visiting it, check that training sessions are not scheduled as happens for example at the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico.

Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area offre ai visitatori l'opportunità di saperne di più sull' habitat paludoso grazie Grand Bay Wetland Education Centre, una sorta di mini-visitor center che apre le porte verso quella che sarà la vera e propria escursione. Ovvero il trail di 2 km (a/r) lungo una passerella che vi porterà nel cuore della "wetland". Non lontano si snoda anche un sentiero escursionistico di 3 miglia attraverso pini "flatwoods".

Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about a wetland habitat from the Grand Bay Wetland Education Center. It's a sort of mini-visitor center that opens the doors to what will be the excursion, the hike (1.2 miles, roundtrip) along a boardwalk that will take you to the heart of the "wetland". There is also a 3-mile hiking trail through pine flatwoods and a camping area used on weekends, when planes from Moody Air Force Base are not using the adjacent bombing range.

E' Natale e ci siamo sostanzialmente solo noi lungo il "boardwalk" e, anche se l'inverno non è il periodo migliore per ammirare la flora e la fauna (aironi, alligatori, lontre di fiume, procioni, linci rosse, volpi grigie, cervi dalla coda bianca diversi tipi di rane, topi d'acqua della Florida...) del Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area, l'escursione di un'oretta entra di diritto negli "highlights" dell'on the road.

It's Christmas and we're alone along the boardwalk. Although winter is not the best time to admire the Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area's wildlife, the excursion is one of the "highlights" of the on the road. Frequently observed wading birds include cattle and great egrets; great blue, little blue, green and tri-color herons; and white ibis. Anhingas are also common on the marsh. Common moorhens and purple gallinules nest here also. Rarely seen but present are American bitterns, black-crowned and yellow-crowned night herons. A small population of Florida sandhill cranes has been introduced to the area, and individuals can be seen or heard throughout the year. You can also see gators, gopher tortoises and indigo snakes. Dudley's Hammock, a rare example of a mature broadleaf-evergreen hammock community, is found in the area.

Il boardwalk, ad eccezione del primissimo tratto, dispone di corrimano e protezioni ed è quindi adatto anche ai più piccoli. Con la ciliegina finale della torre di osservazione alta 17 metri sulla quale non solo è possibile salire, ma anche ammirare l'intera distesa da una posizione privilegiatissima.

The boardwalk, with the exception of the very first stretch, has handrails and protections and is therefore also suitable for children. The final icing is the  54-foot-high observation tower overlooking open prairie and a heron rookery in the bay's center. That's definitely a privileged position...

Quando ci si avvicina al confine con un altro stato americano, significa che è giunto il momento di aguzzare la vista in cerca del "welcome sign", il cartello di benvenuto nel successivo stato a stelle e strisce. A volte ci sono, a volte no. A volte sono bellissimi, altre volte meno. Ecco, al confine tra Florida e Georgia, lungo la highway 75 è davvero tutto semplicissimo. Le due uscite, distanti pochissime miglia una dall'altra, vi permetteranno di visitare sia il "Georgia Visitor Center", che il "Florida Visitor Center", nei quali potrete raccogliere materiale informativo sui due stati e fare foto in tutta tranquillità ai vari "welcome sign". Anche questa è America...

When you approach the border with another US state, it means that the time has come to sharpen your sight in search of the "welcome sign". Sometimes they are located along the way, sometimes you can't find them, sometimes simply there's no welcome signs. Sometimes they are nice, others not so nice. Here, on the border between Florida and Georgia, along the highway 75 it's really very simple to find them. The two highway-exits, a few miles away from each other, will allow you to visit both the "Georgia Visitor Center" and the "Florida Visitor Center", where you can collect informative material about the two states and take pictures in complete tranquility to the " welcome sign ". This is America too ...

Prima di arrivare ad Orlando ci sarebbero ancora due stop imperdibili che, tuttavia, ci siamo trovati costretti a saltare. Il primo è Alexander Springs, una natural pool (con acque color turchese) che durante i mesi caldi richiama tantissimi turisti e locali. Non potendo fare il bagno a causa delle temperature, che si aggiravano sui 7-8 gradi, non avrebbe avuto molto senso pagare la "day fee" di 5.50 dollari a persona per entrare nella riserva.

Before reaching Orlando there would still be two unmissable stops that, however, we've been forced to skip. The first one is called Alexander Springs, a natural pool (with turquoise waters) that during the warm months attracts many tourists and locals. Not being able to swim because of the temperatures, which were around 7-8 degrees (celsius), we decided non to pay the "day fee" (5.50 dollars per peson) to enter the reserve.

Il secondo è invece un autentico gioiellino, il Fern Hammock Springs nell'Ocala National Forest. E, a dirla tutta, nonostante come spesso succede il gps non abbia per nulla aiutato, le abbiamo provate tutte per raggiungerla. Abbiamo chiesto anche a qualche locale che tuttavia ci ha guardato con occhi spalancati. "Eppure siamo sicuri che esista, o forse no..." abbiamo pensato per almeno una mezz'oretta sino a quando l'abbiamo trovato. La gioia, tuttavia, è durata meno di un secondo. E' Natale ed il parco (ingresso 5 dollari a persona) è desolatamente chiuso ed a ricordarcelo è una sbarra a ridosso del chiosco adibito a ticket counter. Un vero peccato. Eppure la visita al Fern Hammock Springs continuiamo a consigliarla e l'indirizzo che più vi permetterà di avvicinarvi ad essa è il seguente: 26701 East Highway 40 Silver Springs, Fl 34488. Una volta entrati, percorrerete un trail di 1 miglio all'interno della storica Juniper Springs Recreation Area che conduce alla pittoresca Fern Hammock Springs, soprannominata anche "The Aquarium" per via dei continui ribollimenti sotto la superficie dell'acqua. Il blu caraibico delle acque fa poi il resto. Chiaramente, a differenza di quasi tutte le hot springs naturali del centro nord della Florida, qui non è possibile fare il bagno a causa delle alte temperature dell'acqua, ma sembrerà davvero di essere in una fiaba...

The second is instead a real gem, Fern Hammock Springs in the Ocala National Forest. To be honest, despite GPS did not help us at all (as often happens in the United States), we've tried everything to get to Fern Hammock. We also asked some locals who nevertheless looked at us with wide eyes. "Well, we are sure that it exists, or maybe not ..." we've thought for at least half an hour until we found it. Anyway, joy lasted less than a second. It's Christmas and the park (admission: 5 dollars per person) is desolately closed and a bar is just there to remind us that that's not our day. Such a pity. If you wanna visit Fern Hammock Springs the address that will allow you to get as closer as possible is 26701 East Highway 40 Silver Springs, Fl 34488. Once you enter, just walk a 1 mile trail within the historic Juniper Springs Recreation Area that leads to the picturesque Fern Hammock Springs, also known as "The Aquarium" due to the constant boiling below the surface of the water. The Caribbean blue water then does the rest. Clearly, unlike almost all the natural hot springs of central North Florida, it is not possible to swim here due to the high temperatures of the water, but it will really seem to be in a fairy tale ...

2017 XMAS TRIP - THE SOUTH-EAST: Georgia, Northern Florida, South Carolina and much more (day 3: Orlando: Magic Kingdom)

Il mini on the road natalizio, vissuto a ritmi decisamente più blandi, ci permette di parlare anche di un'America diversa, quella dei parchi. No, non quelli che vi abbiamo sempre dettagliatamente raccontato, bensì della gioia dei più piccoli e non solo: i parchi divertimento. Un piccolo excursus in un mondo che, pur avendo avuto modo di conoscere a più riprese, fino ad oggi non ci era sembrato potesse meritare un capitolo a parte ed essere raccontato più o meno nel dettaglio. Dopo tutto, se siete ad Orlando, nel regno del divertimento e della magia Disney, si tratta solamente di quale parco scegliere... o no? No, perchè anche dopo che avrete scelto il parco a tema che più vi ispira, vorrete essere sicuri di non gettare letteralmente alle ortiche i 100 e oltre dollari che avrete speso (per persona) per visitare il parco prescelto. Noi non ci riteniamo così esperti come invece lo siamo per altri aspetti a stelle e strisce, ma l'ultima esperienza ci ha spinto a provare a dare qualche piccolo consiglio ad eventuali futuri viaggiatori che volessero imbattersi in un parco Disney, anzi in questo caso nel parco Disney per eccellenza, Magic Kingdom. Dopo tutto, ci mancava solo quello di Orlando dopo aver visitato quelli di Parigi e Los Angeles, mentre ad Orlando avevamo optato per Island Of Adventure, Universal Studios ed Epcot, quest'ultimo facente parte del mondo Disney.

The quick Christmas on the road allows us to talk about a different America, that of the parks. No, not those that we have always talked about: it's time to talk about the... amusement parks. A small excursus in a world that, although, having had the opportunity to get to know it very well, never got a chapter in our blog. After all, if you're in Orlando, in the realm of Disney fun and magic, it's just about which park to visit... or not? No, it's not working in this way. You'll have to select the park and also be sure not to literally waste the 100 and over dollars you have spent (per person). We do not consider ourselves as expert as we are in other american aspects, but the latest experience has led us to try to give some advice to future travelers who want to run into a Disney park. In this case the world famous Magic Kingdom. After all, we only needed that of Orlando after visiting those in Paris and Los Angeles: during our previous Orlando trips we decided to visit Island Of Adventure, Universal Studios and Epcot. The last one is part of Disney World.

Una volta giunti al parcheggio con la vostra auto (che rimane sempre, a parer nostro, la soluzione migliore), avrete la possibilità di raggiungere il parco in due modi. Il primo è con il Ferry che attraversa il lago che separa il parking lot da Magic Kingdom, un'esperienza gratuita e tutto sommato anche carina, l'altra è salire sulla monorotaia che in minor tempo vi porterà davanti agli ingressi. E se, come noi sarete già muniti di ticket, accertatevi che il nome che compare su uno dei biglietti sia colui che ha effettuato l'acquisto dei biglietti stessi. Se, come è accaduto a noi, si trattava di un regalo, dovrete avere con voi il passaporto, altrimenti resterete fuori dai cancelli. Per fortuna li avevamo con noi...

Once you reach the parking lot with your car (which is, in our opinion, still the best solution) you will have the possibility to get to the park in two different ways. You can take the Ferry which crosses the lake that separates the parking lot from Magic Kingdom: that's free of charge and all in all even a nice experience. The second option is to get on the monorail that will take you in front of the entrance of the park. It's definitely quicker but less fascinating. If you already got your tickets (like us), make sure that the name that appears on one of the tickets is the same person who made the purchase of the tickets. Otherwise you must have your passport with you. This situation happened to us: this was a gift, it means we didn't purchase the tickets. Howewer, we had our passports with us!

Come avrete intuito non tutto sempre fila liscio ed è proprio sul "cosa non fare" che vogliamo puntare il dito, più che essere una "guida" del parco. Quando andare a Magic Kingdom? Abbiamo appurato sulla nostra pelle che durante le festività natalizie è un autentico delirio. E delirio è certamente un eufemismo. Il prezzo dei biglietti che era aumentato del 10%  dal 23 di dicembre al 3 di gennaio ci aveva fatto insospettire, ma non avremmo mai immaginato che le ore di coda per le attrazioni più importanti del 26 dicembre 2017, giorno in cui abbiamo visitato il parco, erano tre. A volte anche quattro. Duecentoquaranta minuti. In tutta la giornata siamo riusciti a salire su 3 attrazioni. Le conclusioni le lasciamo a voi...

As you may have guessed, not always everything goes perfectly and we want to talk precisely about "what not to do" rather than being a "guide" of the park. When to go to Magic Kingdom? We know this well enough from our own experience during the Christmas holidays: that time is an authentic delirium. Well, this world is certainly an euphemism. The cost of the tickets that increased by 10% from December 23rd to January 3rd should have got our attention. Howewer, we never tought that the we would have about three to four hour wait. Two hundred and forty minutes. It was the 26th of December, 2017. We only did three attractions.

Ma neanche il fast pass vi ha salvato? Come saprete nei parchi divertimento il fast pass spesso vi facilità e di molto la vita. Quello gratuito (gli altri, costosissimi, non li vogliamo neppure sentir nominare) è il più "famoso". Sono diverse le zone adibite all'ottenimento (gratuitamente, lo ripetiamo) della "scorciatoia" che vi permetterà di evitare code chilometriche. Sceglierete tre attrazioni, quelle che più v'ispirano, e riceverete un ticket che vi ricorderà l'ora nella quale dovrete presentarvi all'entrata dell'attrazione prescelta. Se sarete in difficoltà ci sarà sempre qualcuno del parco a darvi una mano.

Did the fast pass save us? As you know the fast pass would often make life easier. The free ones are the most "famous". There are several areas where you can get them for free. This is substantially a kind of "shortcut" that allow you to avoid queues. You'll have to choose three attractions, the ones that inspire you the most, and you will then receive a ticket with a time stamp. You must be at the the entrance gate of the attraction at the right time. If you are in trouble, just ask. There are many orderlies working in the park.

In alternativa potrete, sfruttando l'efficiente wi-fi del parco, collegarvi ad internet e ottenere i tre fast pass sul sito del parco divertimento che state visitando. E' decisamente più comodo perchè potrete consultare la prima ora disponibile per il fast pass di ciascuna attrazione. Perchè non l'abbiamo usato? Ci abbiamo provato, collegandoci già alle 10 del mattino il primo orario disponibile per le attrazioni di punta erano le 23 circa...

Alternatively you can select the efficient wi-fi offered within the park, connect to the internet and get the three fast passes on the website of the park you are visiting. It is definitely more convenient because you can consult the first available time of each attraction. Why did not we use the three fast pass? We definitely tried to use them. We connected on the internet for the first time at 10 am, but the first available time was... at 11 pm!

Beh, ma allora Magic Kingdom non è poi così...magico. No, calma. detto che il periodo Natalizio potrebbe regalarvi sorprese sgradite, il mondo Disney è di una bellezza stordente. Grandi e piccoli rimangono ammaliati dalla magia, nel vero senso della parola, che aleggia all'interno del parco. Incontrare i personaggi Disney, parlarci e scattare qualche foto insieme a loro, non ha prezzo. E, a dirla tutta, è stato proprio nell'ultimo viaggio che siamo riusciti ad entrare maggiormente a contatto con loro. Sembra assurdo, ma se da una parte l'attesa per le attrazioni era di 3-4 ore, in venti minuti buoni l'Ale è riuscita ad incontrare sia Ariel che Trilli. Due "characters" stupendi. E simpaticissimi.

Well, then we're saying that's not as much magic to remember. No, no no. Magic Kingdom is something truly magic, a stunning beauty you won't forget but you've just to remember that Christmas time is probaby the worse period to visit it. Meet the Disney characters, talk with them and take some pictures is howewer just priceless. And, to be honest, it was on the last trip that we managed to get really in touch with them. It seems absurd, but we've waited for more than three hours to ride a roller coaster and just twenty minutes before meeting Ariel and Tinker. Two wonderful and amazing "characters".

E poi c'è il parco, diviso in sei aree, tutte splendidamente affascinanti. Main Street Usa ricorda la classica "main street", la strada principale, di una piccola cittadina americana, Frontierland ricorda i tempi della frontiera, della corsa all'oro e del vecchio e selvaggio west, mentre Liberty Square è un tuffo nella storia americana. E poi c'è l'area per i più piccoli, Fantasyland, quella futuristica (Tomorrowland) e quella "avventurosa", Adventureland. E quando il castello disney s'illumina e comincia lo spettacolo (ore 18 nel periodo invernale), non vorrete essere da nessun'altra parte, un po' come quando a fine serata ad Epcot prende il via lo show dei fuochi d'artificio. Magic Kingdom è magia, il posto migliore per tornare bambini. Uno di quei luoghi in cui si può ancora volare con la fantasia. Nonostante code e fast pass...

And then there is the park, which is divided into six areas, all beautifully fascinating. Main Street Usa recalls the classic "main street" of a small American town, Frontierland recalls the times of the frontier, the gold rush and the old and wild west, while Liberty Square is a dive into the American history. And then there is the area for the little ones, Fantasyland, the futuristic one (Tomorrowland) and the "adventurous" one, Adventureland. And when the world famous Disney Castle lights up and the show begins (6 pm in the winter), you will not want to be anywhere else, a bit like when at the end of the evening Epcot kicks off the fireworks show. Magic Kingdom is just... magic, the best place to return children. One of those places where you can still fly with your imagination. Despite queues and fast passes ...

2017 XMAS TRIP - THE SOUTH-EAST: Georgia, Northern Florida, South Carolina and much more (day 4: from Orlando to Daytona Beach: Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge and Daytona Speedway)

Archiviata la parentesi disneyana, è tempo di rimettersi in marcia ed esplorare la Florida più selvaggia. No, non stiamo tornando alle Eveglades, stiamo viaggiando verso la costa atlantica, tra laghi paludosi e poca civiltà. La "50", conosciuta anche come E Colonial Drive e poi Cheney Highway è la lunga e monotona strada che collega Orlando con la costa atlantica, fatta di wetlands, wildlife refuges and areas e riserve naturali, ma anche di una città (una delle poche a dir la verità) del tutto particolare. Siamo a Christmas, dove è... sempre Natale. A ricordarvi dove siete sarà un albero, posizionato proprio lungo la "50" (sulla sinistra, provenendo da Orlando), perennemente addobbato con addobbi natalizi. Noi però siamo qui per rendere omaggio a quella che a tutti gli effetti è la seconda peculiarità di una città che, come avrete notato, tende a differenziarsi dalle altre nonostante sia molto piccola e non abbia un downtown.

Magic Kingdom is now behind us, it is time to get back on the road and explore the wildest Florida. No, we are not returning to the Eveglades, we are traveling towards the Atlantic coast, between swampy lakes and very few towns. The "50", also known as E Colonial Drive and then Cheney Highway is the long and monotonous road that connects Orlando with the Atlantic coast: it is made of wetlands, wildlife refuges and areas and nature reserves, but also of very special city. We're talking about Christmas, where it's ... always Christmas. To remind you of where you are there's a tree, located right along the "50" (on the left, coming from Orlando), perennially decorated with Christmas decorations. Anyway, we're not here for the tree, but to pay tribute to what is the second peculiarity of a city that, as you may have noticed, tends to differentiate itself from the others despite being very small and does not have the classical downtown.

Non preoccupatevi, tutto quello che vi serve lo troverete lungo la E Colonial Drive, come Swampy (est della città), semplicemente il più grande alligatore al mondo. Dove c'è aria di world guinness, noi ci siamo. Swampy, venerato da locali e non, è lungo ben 200 piedi ed è situato nel parcheggio del "Jungle Adventures, A real Florida Animal Park", un parco a tema dedicato soprattutto a grandi e piccini. Avventurarvi nel parco vi permetterà di incontrare gators, serpenti, pantere della Florida e moltissimi altri animali che vivono in queste aree.

Do not worry, you'll find everything you need along the E Colonial Drive, like Swampy (east of the city), simply the biggest alligator in the world. When it comes to "world guinness record", we are there. Swampy, revered by locals and tourists, is 200 feet long and is located in the parking lot of "Jungle Adventures, A real Florida Animal Park", a theme park dedicated to animals. Venturing into the park will allow you to meet gators, snakes, Florida panthers and many other animals that live in these areas.

Noi scegliamo di accontentarci di ammirare solamente il "mitico" Swampy, ma riusciamo ad intravedere (non siamo a conoscenza del motivo per cui fosse in un recinto) anche l'orso bruno della Florida, di cui onestamente ignoravamo l'esistenza. Nel percorso con l'airboat potrete ammirarli, con fortuna, nel loro ambiente naturale.

We choose to admire only the "mythical" Swampy, but also glimpse even the Florida's brown bear. Honestly, we didn't even know that Florida hosts bears! You can take an airboat tour and admire the wildlife in their natural environment.

Solitamente, chi si avventura in queste latitutidini lo fa per uno e un solo motivo, il Kennedy Space Center di Cape Canaveral, di cui abbiamo parlato nel diario di viaggio legato alla Florida (https://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.it/2015/01/xmas-in-florida-day-3.html). Noi invece, una volta giunti a Titusville, imbocchiamo la Max Brewer Memorial Parkway ed entriamo nel Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, a livello naturale la grande sorpresa dell'on the road natalizio.

Usually, those who venture into this part of Florida are doing it for only one reason, the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, which we talked about in the travel diary related to Florida (https://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.it/2015/01 /xmas-in-florida-day-3.html). We don't. Once in Titusville, we take the Max Brewer Memorial Parkway and enter the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, the natural surprise of the on theroad.

Cape Canaveral con il Kennedy Space Center non è lontano, anzi fermandosi in alcuni view point s'intravede l'enorme edificio della Nasa. Dopo poche miglia, al bivio, mantenete la destra e dirigetevi al visitor center. Lì troverete tutte le informazioni su uno dei luoghi più sottovalutati dell'intera Florida. Il Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge contiene oltre 1000 specie di piante, 117 specie di pesci, 68 anfibi e rettili, 330 uccelli e 31 specie di mammiferi, di cui 21 specie sono considerate in pericolo di estinzione sia dallo stato della Florida che dal governo federale statunitense.

Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center are not far and if you stop at some viewpoints you can see the huge NASA building. After a few miles, at the fork, keep right and head to the visitor center. There you will find all the information on one of the most underrated places in the whole Florida. The NWR contains over 1000 species of plants, 117 species of fish, 68 amphibians and reptiles, 330 birds, and 31 mammal species, of which 21 species are listed as endangered by the state of Florida or by the US federal government.

Il Merritt Island NWR Complex fornisce percorsi escursionistici per il pubblico, soggetti ovviamente a restrizioni di accesso da parte della NASA. Prima di visitarlo, controllare dunque che in agenda non ci siano particolari attività legate alla Nasa. Al visitor center potrete percorrere un brevissimo trail che sarà una sorta di "piccolo aperitivo" rispetto a quello che vi aspetterà più avanti.

Management of the NWR is provided through the Merritt Island NWR Complex, providing provides hiking and driving trails for the public, subject to access restrictions from NASA. It is a 'gateway site' for the Great Florida Birding Trail. At the visitor center you can hike a very short trail that will be a sort of "little aperitif" compared to what you will visit later.

La natura è chiaramente predominante e, con la solita dose di fortuna, non è raro incontrare qualche animale particolare. L'accesso all'area, seppur gestita dal National Park Service, è gestita in maniera differente rispetto a quanto siamo stati abituati.

Nature is clearly predominant and, with the usual dose of luck, it is not uncommon to see any particular wildlife. The access to the area, although managed by the National Park Service, is managed differently than we have been used to.

La maggior parte del Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge è gratuita, l'unica eccezione è la Black Point Wildlife Drive, per la quale si paga una fee di 10 dollari a vettura (il pass annuale dei national park è valido).

Most of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is free of charge, the only exception is the Black Point Wildlife Drive, for which you pay a day-fee (10 dollars per car). The annual national park pass - America the beautiful is valid.

Ed è proprio questa la grande attrazione del parco, il vero motivo per cui il Merritt Island Refuge è entrato di diritto tra le grandi sorprese positive del viaggio. Per accedervi svoltate a sinistra dopo aver lasciato il visitor center e percorrete a ritroso la Max Brewer Memorial Parkway sino al bivio. Lì, svoltate a destra e proseguite per un paio di miglia. Sulla sinistra troverete la "one way road" denominata Black Point Wildlife Drive, una strada sterrata ben tenuta che si estende su un terreno paludoso compreso tra l'Indian River e l'Oceano Atlantico. Il loop è di 7 miglia.

This is the major attraction of the park, the real reason why the Merritt Island Refuge has entered by right among the great positive surprises of the trip. To access it, turn left after leaving the visitor center and follow the Max Brewer Memorial Parkway back to the junction. Once there, turn right and continue for a couple of miles. On the left you will find the "one way road" called Black Point Wildlife Drive, a well-kept dirt road that extends over marshy land between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. The loop is 7 miles long.

Il percorso è corredato da diversi punti di sosta (segnalati con un numero) sulla laguna. Per chi ama il birdwatching o più in generale la wildlife qui troverà il suo paradiso: aironi, cicogne, tartarughe, alligatori... c'è davvero l'imbarazzo della scelta e non dovrete neppure essere fortunati per avvistarli. E sullo sfondo la piattaforma di lancio di Cape Canaveral, un bellissimo connubio tra la tecnologia e la natura, che interagiscono senza danneggiarsi.

The drive is accompanied by several view points (marked with a number) on the lagoon. For those who love birdwatching will find their paradise right here: herons, storks, turtles, alligators ... This is an embarrassment of riches and you won't have to be lucky to spot them. The launch platform of Cape Canaveral in the backgroun, a beautiful combination of technology and nature, which interact without damage.

Al punto di sosta numero nove, quasi in conclusione del loop, prende il via il Cruickshank Trail, il bellissimo trail che vi catapulterà nelle zone più remote della "wetland". Capirete che il percorso è quello giusto perchè, proprio in avvio di trail, una piccola torre vi permetterà di ammirare il paesaggio da posizione privilegiata.

The Cruickshank Trail begins at the view point number nine, almost at the end of the loop. This is a beautiful trail that will catapult you into the most remote areas of the wetland. You will realize that the trail is the right one because, just at the beginning, a small tower will allow to admire the landscape from a privileged position.

Non si trovano grandi informazioni a riguardo su internet ed è un peccato perchè, seppur poco battuto dal turismo di massa, il Merritt Island Refuge ed in particolare la Black Point Wildlife Drive sono stupendi.

You won't find many informations about this place on the internet and it's a shame because, even if not visited by mass tourism, the Merritt Island Refuge and in particular the Black Point Wildlife Drive are wonderful.

E proprio la scarsa conoscenza della materia ha fatto si che, dopo quasi due miglia percorse, tornassimo sui nostri passi. L'area era sempre più remota e non intravedevamo la fine del trail, che solo dopo abbiamo scoperto essere un loop di ben 5.2 miglia!

When in doubt, we find retracing our steps to be a wise place to begin. This is what happened during the hike. The lack of knowledge of the subject has meant that, after almost two miles walked, we decided to come back.  The area was increasingly remote and we couldn't see the end of the trail, which then we found out that was a loop of 5.2 miles!

Lasciato il Merritt National Wildlife Refuge imbocchiamo per la prima volta la "1", la strada costiera che seguiremo sostanzialmente sino a Jacksonville, l'ultima grande città della Florida prima di sconfinare in Georgia. Siamo "stranamente" di corsa, c'è il Daytona Speedway ad aspettarci e non possiamo permetterci ulteriori soste, ma se capiterete da queste parti non mancate la cittadina di Oak Hill ed in particolare il Seminole Rest Trail, un percorso di 0.30 all’interno del Seminole Rest Historic Site. Situato all'interno di un'antica piantagione e di un importante sito archeologico sull’Indian River Lagoon, il Seminole Rest fornisce un'interpretazione eccellente di questo avamposto costiero attraverso le acque scintillanti del Canaveral National Seashore. Un sentiero lastricato ed una passerella sul lungomare ti incoraggiano a non calpestare questi rari primi tumuli della Florida, dove le ceramiche risalgono al 2000 a.C. Troverete due edifici storici, tra cui la casa di Instone, una plantation house costruita prima del 1890 e la casetta del custode costruita sempre negli stessi anni. Il percorso interpretativo segue la battigia e poi scorre intorno agli edifici in mezzo alle mangrovie.

Leaving the Merritt National Wildlife Refuge, for the first time we take the "1", the coastal road that we will follow till Jacksonville, the last major city in Florida before crossing the border into Georgia. The Daytona Speedway is waiting for us and we can not afford further stops, but if you happen in these lands do not miss the town of Oak Hill and in particular the Seminole Rest Trail (0.3 miles). At the site of a former plantation and important archaeological site on the Indian River Lagoon, Seminole Rest provides excellent interpretation of this coastal outpost across the shimmering waters from the main portion of Canaveral National Seashore. A paved path and boardwalk loop around the complex encourages you to not step on these rare early Florida mounds, where pottery dating back to 2000 B.C. has been found. A paved path, the Seminole Rest Trail provides an easy stroll around Seminole Rest, a former plantation on the Indian River. Sitting atop a series of large middens topped with cedars and an oak hammock – it holds thousands of years of history, first as a coastal encampment for Florida’s early peoples (2000 B.C. – 1040 A.D.) and during the Spanish period, home for the Ais and Timucua Indians. There are two historic buildings on site, including the Instone House, a plantation home built before the 1890s, and an caretaker’s cottage of a similar vintage. The interpretive trail follows the shoreline and then loops around the buildings to parallel a mangrove-lined slough on the return trip. La nostra testa è però già proiettata verso il tempio della velocità, il Daytona International Speedway, nella città di Daytona. Definirlo il tempio della velocità è quasi riduttivo: solamente pochi altri circuiti (negli Usa solo Indianapolis) reggono il confronto con uno dei tracciati più famosi al mondo: qui è stata scritta la storia del motorsport americano e non solo.

However, our head is already projected towards the temple of speed, the Daytona International Speedway, in the city of Daytona. Defining it "the temple of speed" is almost simplistic: only a few other circuits (only Indianapolis in the United States) stand comparison with one of the most famous circuits in the world: the history of American motorsport was written in this place.

Purtroppo tutti i tour per la giornata sono sold out e, anche se ci fosse stato ancora posto, non sarebbe stato così affascinante come paventato. Sono in corso, infatti, alcune prove sul circuito e la parte più interessante, ovvero l'ingresso in pista, non sarebbe stato possibile. In ogni caso la lezione l'abbiamo imparata. D'ora in poi prenoteremo tutto da casa.

Unfortunately all the tours for the day are sold out and, even if there had still been tickets available, it would not have been the same. In fact, some tests are under way on the circuit and we wouldn't been allowed to walk on the circuit, definitely the most interesting part of the tour. In any case, we've learned the lesson. Right now we will definitely book anything from Italy!

Al Daytona Speedway esistono tre diversi tipi di tour (speedway tour, all-access tour e vip tour), ma per quelli che vogliono qualche brivido in più è possibile anche guidare una vettura Nascar (per i neofiti, quelle di "cars") in pista. Sono otto qui i tour tra i quali scegliere, dai costi però proibitivi. Si parte dai 250 dollari del "ride along" ai 2500 del "world champion". La delusione per non poter effettuare il tour "All-Access Tour" è forte, ci dobbiamo accontentare del museo che, per gli amanti della velocità, rimarrà comunque un "must".

There are different types of tours at Daytona Speedway (speedway tours, all-access tours and vip tours), but for those who want some more thrills it is also possible to drive a Nascar car (for newcomers, those of "cars") on the track. There are eight tours here to choose from, but prices are prohibitive. From the 250 dollars of the "ride along" to the 2500 of the "world champion". False expectations create disappointment and that's why we're feeling for not being able to make the tour "All-Access Tour": we can just visit the museum which, for lovers of speed, is still a "must".

Al suo interno più di cent'anni di storia del circuito e di auto naturalmente, un pezzo di storia americana davvero imperdibile. Un aneddoto su tutti. Ve lo ricordate quel gioiellino chiamato "cars - motori ruggenti"? E ve lo ricordate Hudson Hornet, il grande maestro di "Saetta Mcqueen"? Bene, volete sapere qual è stata la prima auto a letteralmente dominare in quel di Daytona? Una Ford? No. Una Chevrolet? No, una Hudson con l'immortale Herb Thomas, per tutti "Hudson Hornet". Metà del vecchio tracciato di Daytona era sulla spiaggia e quindi sullo sterrato, metà sull'asfalto. Non c'è bisogno che vi spieghiamo dove "Hudson Hornet" faceva la differenza.

Inside the museum you can find more than a hundred years of the circuit's history and of course learn more about all the cars which have written the story of Daytona Speedway. A truly unmissable piece of American history. An anecdote about the Daytona Speedway history. Do you remember that little gem called "cars"? Yes? Do you remember Hudson Hornet, who explained drifting to a skeptical Saetta McQueen? Well, do you want to know what was the first car to literally dominate in that of Daytona? A Ford? No. A Chevrolet? No, a Hudson! With the immortal Herb Thomas, well known as "Hudson Hornet". Half of the old route of Daytona circuit was on the beach and then on the dirt road, half on the asphalt. We do not need to explain where "Hudson Hornet" made the difference.

Ah, non c'è bisogno di dirvi che ben 80 record di velocità sono stati stabiliti sulla sabbia di Daytona. Il primo? 68 miglia orari nel febbraio del 1903. L'ultimo 276 miglia nel marzo del 1935.

If now Nascar is the second most recognized car racing brand in the world (second only to Formula 1), it is largely due to Herb Thomas, the pioneer of speed. There is no need to tell you that as many as 80 speed records have been established on the sands of Daytona. The first one? 68 miles per hour, in February 1903. The last was 276 miles per hour in March 1935.

Ecco, se il Daytona Speedway ci ha comunque impressionato, lo stesso non si può dire della città di Daytona. Bruttina, a tratti anche pericolosetta, e con molte serrande abbassate. Un po' meglio, ma solo un pochino, la vicina Daytona Beach che, se da una parte è ancora oggi considerata la "the world famous beach" (anche se ormai durante lo spring break moltissimi studenti americani scelgono Panama Beach come meta), non ci ha impressionato molto. Forse perchè c'era brutto tempo, o forse solo perchè era inverno. Discorso diverso invece merita la cena.

Here, if the Daytona Speedway still impressed us, we cannot say the same for the the city of Daytona. Ugly, sometimes even dangerous, and with many stores that are boarded-up. A little 'better, but just a little bit, the nearby Daytona Beach which is still considered the "the world famous beach" (even though by spring break many American students choose Panama Beach as a top destination). In any case we didn't fall in love with it, maybe because of the bad weather or maybe just because it was winter time. The dinner alone... deserves instead an entire chapter.

Proviamo per la prima volta le "gator bites" all'Ocean Deck (che consigliamo), un piccolo ristorantino con vista sulla spiaggia e molto frequentato dai locali, situato a ridosso di downtown Daytona Beach. La carne di alligatore ci ha ricordato quella del pollo, motivo per cui difficilmente la proveremo nuovamente. Il motivo? Il pollo costa meno della metà...

We try the "gator bites" for the first time at the Ocean Deck (which we recommend), a small restaurant located close to downtown Daytona Beach. With a great view on the beach, The Ocean Deck is local family owned Daytona Beach tradition for over 50 years, featuring live music and dancing every night of the week. A classic restaurant where locals go. Gator bites reminded us of chicken, just slightly more expensive.
