USA - the deep south: Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Arkansas (day 2: Dallas - Midland, Texas)

Ogni on the road presenta, presto o tardi, quella che comunemente viene definita la tappa di trasferimento. E, nonostante ogni angolo dei cinquanta stati sia sempre pronto a regalare qualcosa di emozionante, anche negli Stati Uniti spesso e volentieri occorre avere un po' di... pazienza. E di pazienza, quando si attraversa l'immenso stato del Texas, ce ne vuole sempre parecchia. Le prime 350 delle 5000 miglia spese nel sud degli Stati Uniti ci portano nell'ovest dello stato, una deviazione che abbiamo fortemente voluto per uno e un solo motivo, ovvero visitare uno dei national park più belli in assoluto e che nei precedenti viaggi texani avevamo mancato, il Big Bend National Park. E allora ci toccano quasi 500 km di ranch e trivellatrici, che ci permettono di fantasticare su uno stato così tanto famoso in Italia e allo stesso tempo così poco visitato.

Every road trip presents, sooner or later, what is commonly called a transfer stage. And, despite every corner of the fifty states is always ready to give you something exciting, even in the United States it is often necessary to have a little ... patience. Well, you'll need a lot of patience when traveling through the immense state of Texas. The first 350 of the 5000 miles spent in the deep south of the United States took us to the west of the state, a detour that we strongly wanted for one and only one reason: we wanted to visit one of the most beautiful national park ever, the Big Bend National Park. Unfortunately, we missed it during our previous Texan trips. That's why we're here, traveling 300 miles over ranches and drilling machines, which allow us to fantasize about a state which is very famous and not so popular.

Il Texas, soprannominato "The Lone Star State", lo stato della stella solitaria, è enorme (è grande due volte l'Italia) e non regala le bellezze che l'ovest americano sa offrire. Il west comincia qui, è vero, ma dal punto di vista morfologico presenta un paesaggio a metà tra le grandi pianure degli Stati Uniti centrali ed il territorio desertico-montuoso del west, che se da una parte non richiama i turisti, dall'altra ha fatto la fortuna di molti pionieri anche e soprattutto grazie al petrolio. Eppure, una volta entrati in sintonia con il Texas ed i Texani, si è spinti a sognare. Dalla cucina Tex-Mex, che prende il nome proprio dalla ferroria Texan-Mexican, ai cowboy ed i fuorilegge che hanno scritto la storia del vecchio west, dalle storie di confine segnate dal fiume Rio Grande alla grande tecnologia, modernità e ricchezza dell'attuale Texas che, al pari della California, è una nazione all'interno di un'altra grande nazione chiamata Stati Uniti. Non è un caso che si dica che "tutto è più grande in Texas...".

Texas, dubbed "The Lone Star State" is huge (it's twice the size of Italy) but does not offer the same beauties that the American south and northwest can offer. It is true that the west begins here, but it presents a landscape halfway between the great plains of the central United States and the desert-mountainous territory of the west, which on the one hand doesn't tend to attract tourists, on the other made the fortune of many pioneers also and above all thanks to oil. Yet, once you empathize with Texas and the Texans, you're driven to dream. You'll dream the Tex-Mex kitchen, which takes its name from the Texan-Mexican railroad, the cowboys and outlaws who wrote the history of the old west, all the border stories marked by the Rio Grande river and, of course, the great technology, modernity and richness of the current Texas that, like California, is a nation within another great nation called the United States. It is no coincidence that it is said that "everything is bigger in Texas ...".

WEATHERFORD - QUANTA FRUTTA...
La città mantiene le sue radici pionieristiche e conserva tutto il patrimonio del vecchio west, ma è rinomata anche per i suoi farmers market, i mercati agricoli che animano il suo downtown. Il più importante è il Weatherford Farmer's Market (217 Fort Worth Hwy), la cui specialità estive sono le pesche, le noci pecan e le angurie.

WEATHERFORD'S FARMERS MARKET
The city retains its pioneering roots and preserves all the heritage of the old west, but is also renowned for its farmers markets that animate its downtown. The most famous is the Weatherford Farmer's Market (217 Fort Worth Hwy), whose summer specialties are peaches, pecans and watermelons.

THURBER - IERI CITTA' FIORENTE, OGGI GHOST TOWN

Una piccola deviazione verso nord vi condurrà, se volete, nella cittadina di Palo Pinto, dove potrete visitare l'Old Jail Museum (5th & Elm streets), una prigione di arenaria costruita nel 1882. La Old Jail è un complesso di capanne di edifici di frontiera che ripercorre la vita ai tempi del vecchio west.  E’ aperto dalle 10:00 alle 15:00 (dal giovedì al sabato). Noi invece continuiamo a percorrere la Interstate 20 che ci condurrà fino a Midland, facendo tappa a Thurber. 

THURBER - YESTERDAY A THRIVING CITY, TODAY A GHOST TOWN

A small detour to the north will take you, if you wish, to the town of Palo Pinto, where you can visit the Old Jail Museum (5th & Elm streets), a sandstone prison built in 1882. The Complex, offers jail and jail yard, pioneer cabins, Fort Black Springs, a carriage house, and plenty of artifacts. It contains a remarkable amount of memorabilia from early Palo Pinto County alongside extensive exhibits on the county’s ranching historyt. It is open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM (from Thursday to Saturday). Anyway, we prefer to follow Interstate 20 (which will lead us to Midland) and stop atThurber

Thurber con i suoi 10 abitanti è la principale ghost town del Texas. Quasi 100 anni fa gli abitanti erano più di 9000, ora altro non è che un “pit stop” lungo la interstate 20. Eppure all'epoca fu una delle città più moderne del Texas, essendo la prima completamente fornita di elettricità fornita dalla Texas and Pacific Coal Company, padrona della città stessa.Immigrati provenienti da tutto il mondo hanno lavorato nelle miniere di carbone di Thurber per oltre 30 anni, fornendo carbone alle ferrovie.  In uno stato non noto per il carbone, Thurber ha prodotto tonnellate di "diamanti neri" per più di 30 anni. E adesso? Di cose da vedere a Thurber non ne sono rimaste molte. La principale è The Smokestack, la ciminiera, ed il particolarissimo ristorante,  The Smoke Stack Restaurant (239 Private Road 741, Mingus), situato nel vecchio edificio mercantile del Texas e del Pacifico. E ovviamente il cimitero, che tuttavia non è così semplice da visitare. L'unico a possederne le chiavi è proprio il padrone del ristorante, che previa consegna di un documento d'identità, vi offrirà il necessario per accedervi. 

Thurber with its 10 residents is the main ghost town of Texas. Why? Barely 100 years agom Thurber used to have more than 9.000 residents, but now it's a kind of quick pit stop on Interstate 20. Yet at the time it used to be of the most modern cities in Texas, being the first fully supplied with electricity supplied by the Texas and Pacific Coal Company, which actually was also the owner of the city. Immigrants from all over the world worked in the coal mines of Thurber for over 30 years, providing coal to the railroads. In a state not known for coal, Thurber has produced tons of "black diamonds" for more than 30 years. And now? There were not many things left to see in Thurber. The main one is The Smokestack. Don't forget to miss also The Smoke Stack Restaurant (239 Private Road 741, Mingus), housed in the old Texas and Pacific merchant building. And of course the cemetery, which is not so easy to visit. The only person who owns the keys is the owner of the restaurant...

EASTLAND E LA PIU' GRANDE...

Non saremmo in America se non ci fosse un oggetto, una scultura, una qualsiasi cosa che sia la più grande al mondo. Vi abbiamo abituato agli oggetti più impensabili, ma questa volta raggiungiamo l'apice con la cittadina di Eastland e con The Big Soup Can, il più grande barattolo di zuppa di pomodoro al mondo (Interstate 20 Access Rd, vicino al Dairy Queen). E non si può dire che non sia davvero grande, come conferma il video in fondo alla pagina.

EASTLAND AND THE WORLD BIGGEST...

It wouldn't be called America if there wasn't an object, a sculpture, anything that is the... biggest in the world. We have accustomed you to the most unthinkable objects, but this time we reach the peak of artistic creation: this is the town of Eastland with its "Big Soup Can", the largest tomato soup in the world (Interstate 20 Access Rd, close to the Dairy Queen). Can't say it's not really big and the video at the bottom of the page will confirm it.

A Eastland troverete anche un altro farmers market, Meghann's Market (701 W Main St). Più raffinato del precedente, ma meno familiare. Tuttavia, una delle migliori pecan pie del viaggio l'abbiamo gustata qui.

While in Eastland you will also find out another farmers market, Meghann's Market (701 W Main St). More refined than the previous one, but less familiar. However, we have enjoyed here one of the best pecan pies of the trip right here!

CISCO - IL PRIMO HOTEL DELLA CATENA HILTON

Lo sapevate che la piccola Cisco ha dato il via ad una delle più grandi catene di hotel al mondo? La città è, infatti, finita sulle mappe perchè proprio qui, nel 1919, Conrad Hilton, acquistò il primo hotel, che di fatto diede il via ad un impero con pochissimi eguali. Eppure Conrad Hilton arrivò a Cisco con l’idea di comprare una banca, ma visto il costo elevato della stessa, decise di acquistare il Mobley Hotel. Che ora diventato un museo locale e community center.  

CISCO - THE FIRST HOTEL OF THE HILTON CHAIN

Did you know that the little town of Cisco started one of the biggest hotel chains in the world? Right here, in 1919, Conrad Hilton, bought the first hotel, the first of many on this grand journey that turned him to one of the biggest entrepreneurs in the world. Yet Conrad Hilton came to Cisco with the idea of buying a bank: the bank purchase fell through and he decidet to buy his first hotel, the 40-room Mobley Hotel. Which is now a local museum and community center.

ABILENE, LA CAPITALE AMERICANA DELLE FIABE

Abilene è la capitale americana delle fiabe e, a conferma di tutto ciò, ci sono 23 sculture (storybook characters) sparse nella città. Da non perdere in città anche la Pappy Slokum Brewing Co. che produce una belgian pale ale e un'american porter. (409 S Treadaway Blvd) e, nella vicina Buffalo Gap, una delle steakhouse più rinomate del west Texas, la Perini Ranch Steakhouse (3002 Fm 89, Buffalo Gap). Nell'ultimo tratto, quello che conduce a Midland, tra un ranch ed un pozzo di petrolio, spicca il Roscoe Wind Farm, il secondo più grande parco eolico del mondo come energia prodotta. Produce abbastanza energia per soddisfare il fabbisogno di circa 250.000 case texane. Nulla di eccezionale comunque, come del resto l'anonima anche se parecchio grande Midland, dove l'unica vera attrazione è la George W Bush childhood house, la casa dove è cresciuto George W. Bush (1412 W Ohio Ave). Un po' poco per due affamati d'America con noi. Ma questo è il Texas, prendere o lasciare. E noi prendiamo. Sempre.

ABILENE, THE STORYBOOK CAPITAL OF AMERICA

Abile is the official storybook capital of America. You will find characters of every kind in the downtown cultural district, home to the largest public collection of storybook characters. With 24 sculptures (and counting), these characters brand Abilene as the Storybook Capital of America. Be sure you won't miss also the Pappy Slokum Brewing Co. which produces a Belgian pale ale and an american porter (409 S Treadaway Blvd) and, in the nearby town of Buffalo Gap, one of the most renowned steakhouses in west Texas, the Perini Ranch Steakhouse (3002 Fm 89, Buffalo Gap). In the last section, the one that leads to Midland, between a ranch and an oil well, you'll notice the Roscoe Wind Farm, the second largest wind farm in the world as energy produced. It produces enough energy to meet the needs of about 250,000 Texas homes. Nothing exceptional, however, like the anonymous  Midland, the final destination of the first stage. Even if it's quite big, the only real attraction is the George W. Bush childhood house, the house where the president George W. Bush grew up (1412 W Ohio Ave).That seems a little low for two hungry for... America like us. But this is Texas, take it or leave it. Well, we take it. Always.
