Prende il nome dal canale (che in realtà non fu mai costruito), che avrebbe dovuto dividere le due culture che all'inizio del 1800 popolavano la Louisiana, i francesi e spagnoli che vivevano nel quartiere francese e gli americani provenienti dal Kentucky e dal resto degli stati del Midwest. La vostra visita della città di New Orleans non può non partire da qui, prima di tuffarsi nella selvaggia Bourbon Street, croce e delizia della città. Circoscritta da Canal St & Esplanade Ave, tra Dauphine St & Royal St, Bourbon Street è il cuore della vita notturna di New Orleans. Qui il jazz risuona per le strade, nei locali e nelle piazze di quella che di fatto è la via principale del French Quarter. Il suo nome dice già tutto e rimanda ai tempi della New Orleans che fu, fatta di note musicali, alcol, divertimento ma anche schiavitù, lavoro duro e sterminate piantagioni di cotone. Qui si passa da un bar all'altro, ma nel vero senso della parola...
CANAL STREET AND BOURBON STREET BY NIGHT
Canal Street is the main street of the city, marked by high-end hotels, restaurants and shops. It forms the upstream border of the vieux carrè, the French Quarter. It takes its name from the canal (which it wasn't actually never built), which was supposed to divide the two cultures that populated Louisiana at the beginning of 1800, the French and the Spaniards who lived in the French Quarter and the Americans from Kentucky and the rest of the states of the Midwest. Your visit to the city of New Orleans begins here, before plunging into the wild Bourbon Street, the city's torment and delight. Bordered by Canal St & Esplanade Ave, between Dauphine St & Royal St, Bourbon Street is the heart of New Orleans nightlife. Jazz rings out in the streets and in the clubs. Its name already says it all and refers to the times of the "old" New Orleans, made by musical notes, alcohol, entertainment but also slavery, hard work and endless cotton plantations. Here you go from one bar to another, literally.

DOVE DORMIRE E CENARE A NEW ORLEANS
E' risaputo che, lontano dal cuore pulsante, ovvero il French Quarter, New Orleans non sia proprio sicurissima. Per questo sono moltissimi quelli che cercano una sistemazione molto centrale che però spesso e volentieri costringe a sforzi extrabudget considerevoli. Se siete alla ricerca di un comodo ed economico alloggio appena fuori dal centro consigliamo il Prytania Park Hotel, che noi abbiamo trovato ad 83 euro ad agosto. Hotel senza troppe pretese ma perfetto per chi non vuol sforare il budget. Al suo esterno passa il tram (trafficatissimo) che in 15 minuti arriva a Canal Street. L'area dove sorge l'hotel, seppur periferica, non ci è sembrata per nulla pericolosa. A livello culinario avrete davvero l'imbarazzo della scelta. Potrete sperimentare la cucina cajun da Dooky Chase e da Pierre's Maspero, quest'ultimo un autentico pezzo di storia a New Orleans, oppure gustare il mitico po-boy da Mahony's Po-Boy Shop oppure da R & O's, entrambi scoperti in "a tavola con Guy". Da Cooter Browns Tavern & Oyster Bar (509 S Carrollton Ave) troverete una fantastica philly cheese steak con salsicce d’alligatore e gamberetti (Man greatest food). Per chi ama la cucina più raffinata (e costosa) consigliamo Johnny Sanchez, uno chef che offre una nuova versione della cucina messicana. Alcuni dei ristoranti che abbiamo consigliato non si trovano nel centro storico, avrete dunque bisogno della vostra auto per raggiungerli.
WHERE TO STAY AND DINE IN NEW ORLEANS
It is well known that, far from the beating heart, which is the French Quarter, New Orleans is not the safest town in the world. This is why many tourists look for a very central accomodation that often, however, forces to considerable extrabudget efforts. If you are looking for a comfortable and cheap accommodation just outside the french quarter, we recommend the Prytania Park Hotel (we paid 83 euros in August). It's a unassuming hotel, but perfect for those who do not want to go over budget. The tram station is located just outside the hotel (always busy): get on it and you'll be in Canal Street in 15 minutes. The area where the hotel is located, although on the outskirts of the town, did not seem dangerous at all. As regards places to dine you will be spoiled for choice. Experience the Cajun cuisine at Dooky Chase and Pierre's Maspero, a real piece of history in New Orleans, or enjoy the legendary po-boy at Mahony's Po-Boy Shop or R & O's, both discovered following the tv show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives ". At Cooter Browns Tavern & Oyster Bar (509 S Carrollton Ave) you will find a fantastic philly cheese steak with alligator sausages and shrimp (Man's greatest food). For those who love the finest (and expensive) cuisine, we recommend Johnny Sanchez, a chef who offers a new version of Mexican cuisine. Some of the restaurants we recommended are not located in the historic city center.

Ne troverete tantissime di guide online dedicate al french quarter. Per questo non ci soffermeremo troppo sul "cosa visitare a New Orleans" ma vi proponiamo qualche chicca davvero imperdibile del quartiere. Senza dimenticare che sostanzialmente ogni casa del french quarter ha una storia da raccontare e che varrebbe la pena soffermarsi ad ogni angolo di uno dei quartieri più intriganti degli Usa.

The French Quarter (Vieux Carré, as the inhabitants of New Orleans call it) has a rectangular shape with a checkerboard pattern and is bordered on one side by the Mississippi river and Rampart Street and on the other side by Canal Street and Esplanade Avenue. It is picturesque and rich in history, every corner could get some amazing surprises and tell you years and years of the city's history.

Le Pretre Mansion (716 Dauphine St)
La Pretre Mansion salì agli onori della cronaca quando un turco benestante affittò la casa portando con sé servitori e belle ragazze. Una notte si udirono delle urla e la mattina seguente i vicini trovarono l'inquilino e le giovani bellezze che giacevano morte in una pozza di sangue. Il mistero rimase irrisolto.

Le Pretre Mansion (716 Dauphine St)
The Pretre Mansion hit headlines when a wealthy Turk rented the house, bringing with him servants and beautiful girls. One night there were screams and the next morning the neighbors found the tenant and the young beauties lying dead in a bloodbath. The mystery remained unsolved.
Bourbon Orleans Hotel (717 Orleans St)
Qui i ricchi uomini bianchi venivano presentati a potenziali amanti, donne di colore libere. L'edificio divenne in seguito un convento per le suore della Sacra Famiglia, il secondo ordine più antico di suore nere nel paese.
Il vodoo è ben radicato a Nola ed anche i negozi di souvenir offrono tutta la mercanzia connessa al genere. Ma la House of Vodoo va oltre. E' davvero inquietante. Bamboline fatte mano, fantocci di pezza, spilloni di vario tipo....

In this place the rich white men were introduced to potential lovers, free black women. The building later became a convent for the Sisters of the Holy Family, the second oldest order of black nuns in the country.

The vodoo is deep seated in Nola and also the souvenir shops offer all the merchandise related to vodoo. But the House of Vodoo goes further. It is really disturbing. Handmade dolls, rag dolls, different kinds of pins ....

The Lalaurie Home (1140 Royal ST)
Non mancano le storie legate alle abitazioni di New Orleans. Qui la vedova per due volte Madame Delphine Macarty de Lopez Blanque ed il dottor Louis Lalaurie erano soliti organizzare feste stravaganti. Una notte nel 1834 scoppiò l'incendio. I vicini si avventurarono per salvarli e trovarono sette schiavi affamati incatenati in posizioni dolorose. La vista, combinata con le voci che circolavano sugli schiavi di Delphine che pare si fossero suicidati fecero infuriare i vicini che costrinsero Madame Lalaurie e la sua famiglia a fuggire a Parigi. Non mancano anche qui i racconti di fantasmi, soprattutto quello di un bambino schiavo che cadde dal tetto cercando di sfuggire alle crudeltà di Delphine. L'edificio fu in passato quartier generale dell'Unione durante la Guerra Civile, una casa da gioco e casa dell'attore Nicolas Cage.

Questo mercato in stile europeo è presente da oltre 200 anni. Nato come trading post dei nativi americani prima della colonizzazione europea, il mercato è il più antico del suo genere negli Stati Uniti. E' situato a ridosso del Café du Monde ed è stato ricostruito e rinnovato diverse volte.
The Lalaurie Home (1140 Royal ST)
There is no shortage of stories related to New Orleans houses. In this building, the twice widow Madame Delphine Macarty de Lopez Blanque and Dr. Louis Lalaurie used to organize extravagant parties. One night, in 1834, the fire broke out. After the blaze was put out, the fire fighters discovered a horrible sight behind a secret, barred door in the attic. All of the doubts about Madame Lalaurie were realized.... This fact combined with the rumors circulating about Delphine's slaves who apparently committed suicide, forced her to leave town forever. There are also ghost stories, especially that of a slave child who fell from the roof trying to escape the cruelty of Delphine. The building was once the headquarters of the Union during the Civil War, a gambling house and home of actor Nicolas Cage.
The Historic French Market (1008 N Peters St)
This European-style market has been present for over 200 years in town. Former a trading post of Native Americans before European colonization, the market is the oldest of its kind in the United States. It's located very close to the famous Café du Monde and has been rebuilt and renovated several times.

Cafè du Monde (813 Decaur St)
Il Cafè du Monde è rimasto chiuso solamente dopo qualche uragano, ma nei giorni restanti (e nelle notti) è sempre circondato da tantissimi turisti in attesa di gustare il "Cafè au Lait" (uno schiumosissimo cappuccino), ma soprattutto i "beigneès", una sorta di zeppole fritte e ricoperte da uno strato di zucchero al velo. Un altro cafè da non perdere è il Cafe Beignet.

Fu qui che nel 1803, la Lousiana fu annessa agli Stati Uniti. E' stata progettata dall'architetto Louis H. Pillé, che si è ispirato alla famosa Place Des Vosges di Parigi. E' un quadrato verde con al centro la statua equestre di Andrew Jackson, settimo presidente degli Usa ed eroe della battaglia di New Orleans contro gli inglesi.

Jackson Square (700 Decatur St)
It was here that in 1803, the Lousiana was annexed to the United States. It was designed by architect Louis H. Pillé, who took inspiration from the famous Place Des Vosges in Paris. It's a green square with the equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson located in the middle, the seventh president of the United States and hero of the battle of New Orleans against the British.

Il Presbytère fu originariamente progettato come canonica della cattedrale. Non fu tuttavia mai usato come canonica, ma divenne un palazzo di giustizia della città e ora ospita l'eccellente Louisiana State Museum.

La cattedrale cittadina sembra un castello delle fiabe: torri bianche, tetto blu e stradine in mezzo ai fiori per raggiungerla. E' la più antica cattedrale cattolica degli Stati Uniti, ma in realtà è stata ricostruita per ben tre volte in seguito ad un uragano e ad un incendio.

Within the New Orleans Jazz National Historic Park you will find the Jazz Walk Of Fame (916 N Peters St), a pedestrian path along which there're all the great Jazz stars, including of course also Louis Armstrong .
