Chattanooga. And it is precisely the city of Tennesse the highlight of a day that has led us to leave Alabama, traveled from south to north in less than 24 hours. This is another day spent along the civil rights trail, but also in the middle of the nature (finally!). And it can't be missed the usual unfailing goodies that only the US can give and that distinguish every road trip.

We left you in Clanton, Alabama, with the promise that we would have shown you one of the most original water tower in the state. An enormous peach (120 feet high, contains 500,000 liters of water) that dominates the entire city. All this is not random. Chilton County, in fact, is the most important peaches production center in Alabama, even though the Clanton water tower is not the tallest of all those shaped like a peach. If you are looking for world guinness records you will have to go to Gaffney, South Carolina.

UN'ENORME STATUA DELLA LIBERTA' A BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA?
L'Alabama Civil Rights Trail ci porta a Birmingham, la più popolosa città dell'Alabama. Non prima però di aver attraversato cittadine sperdute nelle campagne dello stato, come Thorsby (ex insediamento scandinavo), Calera o Alabaster ed aver scovato l'ennesima... statua della Libertà proprio alle porte di Birmingham. La Statue of Liberty Replica è situata all'interno del Liberty Park, all'angolo tra River Run e Liberty Parkway ed è alta ben 36 piedi, in scala 1/5 rispetto a quella situata a New York City. Costruita nel 1958, è una delle più grandi repliche al mondo.

But not before we cross some lost towns in the countryside of the state, such as Thorsby (formerly a Scandinavian settlement), Calera or Alabaster and find yet another ... Statue of Liberty right on the outskirts of Birmingham. Always south of the city, another green area not to be missed is Vulcan Park (701 Valley View Dr), the symbol of a city that has always been very active in the production of steel. Ma chi passa da Birmingham solitamente è attratto dal Civil Rights District. Già, perchè anche Birmingham, come Montgomery e Selma di cui abbiamo parlato nel precedente post, è stata teatro negli anni 60 di sanguinose lotte per i diritti civili, che lo splendido Kelly Ingram Park (5th Ave N at 16th St) vi farà rivivere in una semplice passeggiata. Situato proprio nel cuore di downwtown, il parco si distingue come "luogo di rivoluzione e riconciliazione": durante il movimento per i diritti civili, lo storico Kelly Ingram Park divenne, infatti, il punto focale della resistenza popolare al razzismo e alla discriminazione razziale. Gli eventi raffigurati all'interno del Kelly Ingram Park rappresentano ciò che accadde a metà degli anni sessanta in città: troverete allora statue raffiguranti cani poliziotto ed estintori che furono lanciati addosso ai manifestanti che si erano riuniti per protestare.

Located right in the heart of downwtown and distinguished as "A Place of Revolution and Reconciliation," historic Kelly Ingram Park serves as a threshold to the Civil Rights District. During the Civil Rights Movement, this public park became the focal point of a grassroots resistance to the inhumanities of racism and discrimination by law and by custom. Events which took place in Kelly Ingram Park vividly portrayed the realities of police dogs and fire hoses turned on marchers who gathered for civil rights demonstrations in the 1960's.

Era il 15 settembre del 1966 quando due membri del Ku Klux Klan fanno esplodere una bomba all’interno della 16th Street Baptist Church, massacrando 4 ragazzine che si stavano preparando per la messa. Dal lato opposto della strada è invece situato il Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (ingresso: 15 dollari) che ripercorre l'intera lotta. Located near Kelly Ingram Park, you can not miss the 16th Street Baptist Church (1530 6th Avenue N), the scene of one of the bloodiest events regarding the fight for civil rights. It was September 15, 1966 when two members of the Ku Klux Klan detonated a bomb inside the 16th Street Baptist Church, slaughtering 4 girls who were preparing for mass. On the opposite side of the road you'll see the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (admission: $ 15) which traces the entire struggle. Inside the museum you can visit the cell where Martin Luther King wrote the Letter from Birmingham jail.

Gli appassionati di motori, ed in particolare di moto, infine, prima di lasciare Birminghan, non potranno mancare l'appuntamento con il Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum (6030 Barber Motorsports, Birmingham – 15 dollari, chiude alle 18), situato all'interno dello storico circuito automobilistico. Il Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum è il maggiore museo a prevalente tema motociclistico degli Stati Uniti d'America e tra i più importanti al mondo. Il primo livello è occupato dall'officina di restauro e al secondo livello sono posizionate una cinquantina di autovetture, prevalentemente costituite da vetture da competizione Lotus, ma non mancano Porsche e Ferrari, tra cui la "156" di John Surtees. I tre livelli superiori sono interamente dedicati ai veicoli a due ruote: sono esposti motocicli, scooter e ciclomotori.
UN VIAGGIO NELLA NATURA, LA LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN PARKWAY
Se la vostra prossima meta è Chattanooga, avrete la possibilità di evitare la highway e percorrere la decisamente più scenografica Lookout Mountain Parkway. Non ci sono cartelli che aiutano il visitatore nel percorrerla, seguirla dunque non è proprio semplicissimo. Prendete come riferimento la piccola cittadina di Springville e magari fermatevi nel suo piccolo downtown per gustarvi un ottimo gelato da Laster Sundries prima di intraprendere l'avventura lungo la Lookout Mountain Area. The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is the largest motorcycle theme museum in the United States of America and one of the most important in the world. The first level is occupied by the restoration workshop, at the second level there are about fifty cars, mainly consisting of Lotus racing cars, but there are also Porsche and Ferrari, including the "156" by John Surtees. BACK TO NATURE, THE LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN PARKWAY

There are no signs that help visitors to follow it. Take as a reference the small town of Springville and maybe stop by its small downtown to enjoy an excellent ice cream at Laster Sundries before embarking on the adventure along the Lookout Mountain Area. La Lookout Mountain Parkway si estende su tre stati da Gadsen, in alabama, a Chattanooga nel Tennessee. Nell'arco di 93 miglia i visitatori troverete cascate, canyon, panorami, città e villaggi, parchi e riserve e molte altre meraviglie naturali. Lungo le sue strade si tiene inoltre il più lungo yard sale del mondo che si svolge in agosto, quando oltre 4.000 venditori ambulanti fiancheggiano la Lookout Mountain Parkway e la US 127 per circa 660 miglia di occasioni. Come abbiamo detto non è facile seguirla: ci consigliamo di cominciare l'avventura dalle cascate Noccalula (1500 Noccalula rd, ingresso: 6 dollari) e da lì seguire la "89" (Tabor Road) che poi diventerà cherokee county road. Da lì prende il via la scenic byway vera e propria. Starete percorrendo la strada esatta se incrocerete lungo il percorso il Desoto State Park (7104 Desoto Pkwy NE). Se invece avrete preferito la highway avrete comunque pane per i vostri denti grazie ad uno dei luoghi decisamente più insoliti dello stato dell'Alabama, l'Unclaimed Baggage Center di Scottsboro (509 W Willow St). Questo negozio è unico nel suo genere: è, infatti, l'unico luogo in tutti gli Stati Uniti in cui la merce in vendita è quella che dimenticata e non reclamata dai viaggiatori negli aereoporti. Troverete davvero di tutto, dagli ipad agli strumenti musicali. Persino vestiti da matrimonio.
LE ATTRAZIONI DI CHATTANOOGA: ROCK CITY, RUBY FALLS E INCLINE RAILWAY
Avevamo grandissime aspettative sul rinomato "trittico di Chattanooga", ovvero le tre grandi attrazioni, due di queste naturalistiche, che offre la città. Tanto ci è piaciuta Chattanooga nel suo complesso, quanto invece non ci hanno convinto pienamente i suoi "gioiellini", che oltre ad essere costosi ci sono sembrati la più classica delle trappole per turisti. Per questo abbiamo scelto di soffermarci solo su quello che sulla carta ci è sembrato il "più interessante" tra i tre, Rock City (1400 Patten Road, chiusura estiva ore 20, prezzo 15.95).

CHATTANOOGA'S ATTRACTIONS: ROCK CITY, RUBY FALLS AND INCLINE RAILWAY
We had great expectations for the famous "Chattanooga's triptych", the three main attractions of the city. We liked Chattanooga as a whole, but its "gems" did not convince us.. Why? They were too expensive and seemed to be the typical tourist traps. For this reason we have chosen to visit only on what on paper should be "most interesting" between the three, Rock City (1400 Patten Road, summer closure: 8 pm. Admission tickets: 15.95 dollars).

Lookout Mountain, che in realtà è in Georgia, al confine con il Tennessee e quindi con la città di Chattanooga, è un lungo percorso contorto nella roccia contornato da diversi giardini. Ci aspettavamo un po' di avventura, in realtà è un mini parco divertimenti in un contesto naturalistico. Le principali attrazioni del Rock City Gardens sono le seguenti:
Lookout Mountain, which is actually in Georgia, on the border with Tennessee and therefore with the city of Chattanooga, is a long twisted path in the rocks surrounded by several gardens. We expected a bit of adventure, actually it's a mini amusement park in a naturalistic setting. The main attractions of Rock City Gardens are the following:

- High Falls of the Lookout Mountain, una cascata artificiale alta 43 metri che cade all'interno di una piccola piscina naturale.
- High Falls of the Lookout Mountain, a 43-meter-high artificial waterfall within a small natural pool.
- Lover's Leap, una roccia che prende il nome dalla leggenda Cherokee di due giovani amanti, un coraggioso di nome Sautee e una bella fanciulla di nome Nacoochee, appartenenti a due tribù in lotta. Secondo la leggenda, Sautee fu catturato e gettato dalla cima del Lover's Leap. Nacoochee, sconvolta dalla perdita, si uccise allo stesso modo.
- Lover's Leap, a rock named after the Cherokee legend of two young lovers, a brave named Sautee and a beautiful girl named Nacoochee,belonging to two fighting tribes. According to legend, Sautee was captured and thrown from the top of Lover's Leap. Nacoochee, devastated by the loss, killed himself in the same way.
- Seven States View. A Lover's Leap, puoi, in giornate limpide, riuscire a vedere ben sette stati. Durante la Guerra Civile, sia un ufficiale dell'Unione che un'infermiera confederata annotarono in un diario che la sommità di quella che poi diventerà Rock City offriva viste su sette stati. - Seven States View. At Lover's Leap, you can, on clear days, be able to see seven states. During the Civil War, both a Union officer and a Confederate nurse recorded in a diary that the summit of what would later become Rock City offered views of seven states. Today, Flag Court serves as a tribute to each of these states: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
- Fairyland Caverns. Se viaggiate con bambini, rimarranno estasiati dalle Fayriland Caverns. Frieda Utermoehlen Carter, uno dei fondatori di Rock City, amava il folclore e le fiabe europee. Suo marito, Garnet Carter, ha dunque ingaggiato uno scultore di Atlanta di nome Jessie Sanders per creare scene da alcune delle fiabe più amate del mondo.
- Fairyland Caverns. If you are traveling with children, they will be enraptured by the Fayriland Caverns. Frieda Utermoehlen Carter, one of the founders of Rock City, loved European folklore and fairy tales. Her husband, Garnet Carter, has therefore hired an Atlanta sculptor named Jessie Sanders to create scenes from some of the world's most beloved fairy tales.
- Swing-a-Long Bridge. Lungo 180 piedi, questo ponte sospeso è il luogo ideale per scattare una foto della valle di Chattanooga.
- Mother Goose Village. Completed by Sanders in 1964 and housed within Fairyland Caverns, Mother Goose Village is an impressive landscape entirely connected to classical nursery rhymes such as Humpty Dumpty, Three Little Pigs and Little Boy Blue.
- Swing-a-Long Bridge. 180 feet long, this suspension bridge is the perfect place to take a picture of the Chattanooga Valley.
Noi abbiamo scelto di non visitarla, ma un'altra grande attrazione è sicuramente Ruby Falls (1720 South Scenic Hwy, aperto dalle 8 del mattino alle 8 di sera. Prezzo: 19.95 dollari). Un ascensore vi permetterà di scendere nelle grotte e seguire un percorso che conduce alla cascata. L’acqua cade in un pozzo verticale di grandi dimensioni, il tutto contornato da musica di sottofondo e giochi di luce sulle cascate. A concludere il "trittico di Chattanooga" è il Lookout Mountain Incline Railway (827 E Brow Rd, aperto dalle 10 alle 6, costa 15 dollari). Dal 1895 è la funicolare più ripida al mondo, con una pendenza massima del 73%. Se voleste visitare tutte e tre le attrazioni vi consigliamo un biglietto cumulativo che vi permetterà di risparmiare qualche dollaro.
No, Chattanooga non è solamente il suo "trittico" di attrazioni che richiamano moltissimi turisti. Chattanooga è una città molto carina, tanto da essersi guadagnata il nickname di "the scenic city". Il suo lungofiume, sul fiume Tennessee, è decisamente scenografico e le due sponde sono collegate da ben cinque ponti pedonali. Il consiglio che vi diamo è di cominciare il walking tour di Chattanooga dal pittoresco Bluff view art district, il quartiere artistico e bohémien della città, ricco di ristoranti, caffetterie, gallerie d'arte ed uno storico bed & breakfast. Dalla sua posizione privilegiata in cima al bluff (le scogliere), avrete una vista mozzafiato sul fiume Tennessee, sul centro di Chattanooga e sul Walnut Street Bridge.

An elevator will allow you to go down into the caves and follow a path that leads to the waterfall. The water falls into a large vertical well, all surrounded by background music and plays of light on the falls. I has been the steepest funicular in the world since 1895, with a maximum gradient of 73%. MUST SEE IN CHATTANOOGA: RIVERFRONT AND BLUFF VIEW ART DISTRICT
No, Chattanooga is not just its main 3 attractions that attract many tourists. Chattanooga is a very nice city, so much so that it has earned the nickname "the scenic city". Its riverfront on the Tennessee River is decidedly scenographic and the two banks are connected by five pedestrian bridges. Our advice is to start the Chattanooga's walking tour from the picturesque Bluff view art district, the artistic and bohemian district of the city, full of restaurants, cafes, art galleries and a historic bed and breakfast. From its privileged location on the top of the bluff, you will get stunning views on the Tennessee River, downtown Chattanooga and the Walnut Street Bridge.
Proseguite verso l'Hunter Museum of American Art sino a raggiungere il Chattanooga Riverwalk e soprattutto il Wallnut Bridge, uno dei ponti pedonali della città. Percorretelo sino all'altra sponda, dove ad attendervi ci sarà il Coolidge Park. Da qui si apre una bella vista sul downtown di Chattanooga.
Continue to the Hunter Museum of American Art until you reach the Chattanooga Riverwalk and especially the Wallnut Bridge, one of the city's pedestrian bridges. Follow it to the other side, where Coolidge Park and a beautiful view of downtown Chattanooga are waiting for you.

I Moon Pie General store dista solo 0.6 miglia dal Bluff View Art District. Gli amanti dei treni infine potranno invece visitare il terminal della Southern Railway la cui imponente struttura in stile Beaux-Arts ospita l’hotel Chattanooga Choo Choo, dal titolo del grandissimo successo swing composto da Glenn Miller nel 1942. Qui, durante l'epoca di massimo splendore di Chattanooga, ovvero tra la fine della guerra di secessione al secondo conflitto mondiale, passavano centinaia di treni ogni giorno, trasportando celebrità come i presidenti Theodore Roosevelt e Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
