Things to see in Toronto: visit the CN Tower, one of the world's tallest free-standing structure

Tutto ciò che è enorme, imponente, attira da sempre la curiosità dell'uomo. E, quando si parla di un qualcosa di maestoso, pochi luoghi nel Nord America battono la Canadian National Tower. Siamo a Toronto, nel cuore della città, a poche centinaia di metri dal Lake Ontario e stiamo per portarvi in cima alla struttura che, con i suoi 553  metri di altezza, è la quarta più grande al mondo e terza essere tra le strutture autoportanti mai costruite. Non solo la Cn Tower è uno dei simboli della metropoli canadese, ma è anche una delle principali attrazioni della città di Toronto.

If you are wondering what to see in Toronto and where to start the walking tour of the multiethnic Canadian city, the CN Tower is definitely a very good starting point. From the top of the tower you can in fact enjoy a breathtaking view of the Ontario, Toronto and the immense plain that leads to the  Hudson bay. And, when the sky allows it, also admire the great plains of the American midwest.

LA STORIA DELLA CN TOWER
La storia della Cn Tower parte da lontano, dal boom economico vissuto negli anni '70 dalla città di Toronto, sulla cui onda la Canadian National (CN), ente nazionale che gestiva il sistema ferroviario e delle telecomunicazioni canadesi, decise che quello sarebbe stato il momento giusto per costruire un qualcosa che non solo avrebbe dato risalto a Toronto, ma rappresentato il Canada nel mondo. Ci avevano visto giusto. Nel 1976 viene inaugurata la torre polifunzionale Canadian National Tower che, per diverso tempo, è stata anche la torre più alta al mondo tra quelle con struttura autoportante.

THE HISTORY OF CN TOWER
The history of CN Tower begins from afar, from the economic boom experienced in the '70s by the city of Toronto.In the wake of this boom, the Canadian National (CN), national body that managed the Canadian railway and telecommunications system, decided that this would be the right time to build something special. A building that would have not only given prominence to Toronto, but would have represented Canada in the world. They got it right. The multi-purpose Canadian National Tower was inaugurated in 1976. It was also the tallest tower in the world among those with a self-supporting structure for some time.

VISITARE LA CN TOWER
La Cn tower è sicuramente una delle principali cose da vedere a Toronto. E, per godere al meglio questa esperienza, il consiglio soprattutto nei mesi estivi è quello di visitarla presto al mattino o la sera, per evitare la lunga fila di turisti che ogni giorno accorrono per visitarla, soprattutto nel week end.

The CN tower is definitely one of the main things to see in Toronto. And, to better enjoy this experience, the advice especially in the summer months is to visit early in the morning or in the evening, to avoid the long line of tourists who come to visit it every day, especially on weekends.

Il primo ascensore vi porterà ai 346 metri del Lookout Level, il primo punto panoramico che offre la Cn Tower. Uno dei punti di forza della terrazza d'osservazione è il Glass Floor: in sostanza, una parte del pavimento è ricoperta di spessi vetri che permettono ai visitatori di camminare con la sensazione di esser sospesi nel vuoto alla impressionante altezza di 346 metri. Nella foto qui sotto Ale è sdraiata sul pavimento. Sotto di lei... il vuoto.

The first lift takes you to the 346-meter Lookout Level, the first amazing view point on the top of the CN Tower. One of the strengths of the observation deck is the Glass Floor: in essence, a part of the floor is covered with thick glass that allows visitors to walk with the feeling of being suspended in the air at an impressive height of 346 meters. In the picture below Ale is lying on the floor. Below her ... the emptiness.

Gli amanti delle pose estreme troveranno pane per i loro denti. Inutile nascondere che la miglior vista sulla città l'avrete proprio all'interno del LookOut Level. Poco sopra il Glass Floor troverete il ristorante della Cn Tower (360 metri): in un'ora e mezza compie un giro completo intorno all'asse della torre.

Lovers of extreme poses got our work cut out for them. Needless to hide that you'll get the best view on the city right in the LookOut Level. Just above the Glass Floor there's the Cn Tower restaurant (360 meters): it takes a complete turn around the axis of the tower in one hour and a half.

Il ticket completo (general admission + skypod) vi consentirà poi di riprendere l'ascensore e salire sino ai 447 metri di altezza dove ad attendervi troverete lo Skypod. Qui avrete la possibilità di percorrere un giro circolare ed ammirare la città da ancora più in alto. Il rischio è quello di rimanere un po' delusi dopo aver sperimentato la parte più intrigante della Cn Tower, quella del LookOut Level.

The complete admission ticket (general admission + skypod) will then allow you to get the elevator again and climb up to 447 meters above the sea level where the Skypod area is waiting for you. You'll have the opportunity to take a quick loop walk and admire the city from even higher. You might be a bit disappointed after experiencing the most intriguing part of CN Tower, that of the LookOut Level.

A meno che voi siate alla ricerca dell'autentico brivido, che solamente l'edge walk potrà regalarvi. Cos'è l'edge walk? Una camminata di una ventina di minuti sul cornicione esterno della torre (sospesi nel vuoto), ad un'altezza di circa 360 metri. Dovrete però esser pronti a svuotare il portafogli perchè il costo è davvero proibitivo...

Unless you are looking for the authentic thrill that only the edge walk can give you. What is the edge walk? A twenty minutes walk on the ledge of the tower (over the edge), at a height of about 360 meters. But you will have to be ready to empty the wallet because this experience is really expensive...

Prima di concludere la visita attraverserete l'area, enorme, dedicata allo shop, dove potrete acquistare un souvenir della torre o qualche altra chicca della città di Toronto.

Before concluding your visit to Cn Tower, you will cross the enormous area dedicated to the shop, where you could buy a souvenir of the tower or some other gem of the city of Toronto.

CN TOWER - ORARI E PREZZI
La Cn Tower è aperta tutti i giorni dalle 9 del mattino alle 22.30 (Lookout Level, Glass Floor e Skypod). Il ristorante è aperto per pranzo dalle 11 alle 14.15 e dalle 16.30 alle 22.15. Il cafè (Le Cafè) dalle 10 alle 20.

Tower Experience Ticket - Il prezzo per il "general admission", che comprende l'accesso al Lookout Level ed al Glass Floor è di 38 dollari canadesi per gli adulti e 28 per i bambini (4-12 anni), aggiornato al 2019. L'esperienza più completa, ovvero quella che comprende anche lo Skypod (General Admission + SkyPod) costa invece 53 dollari canadesi per gli adulti e 43 per i bambini. L'adrenalinica esperienza dell'Edge Walk, come abbiamo detto, non è invece economicissima (195 dollari canadesi).

CN TOWER - HOURS OF OPERATION AND PRICES
The CN Tower is open every day from 9am to 10.30 pm (Lookout Level, Glass Floor and Skypod). The restaurant is open for lunch from 11 am to 2.15 pm and from 4.30 pm to 10.15 pm. The cafe (Le Cafè) from 10 am to 10 pm.


Tower Experience Ticket - The "general admission" ticket, which includes access to the Lookout Level and the Glass Floor costs 38 Canadian dollars (adults) and 28 (children, 4-12 years old), updated to 2019. The most complete experience, the one that also includes the Skypod (General Admission + SkyPod) costs 53 Canadian dollars (adults) and 43 for children. The adrenaline experience of the Edgewalk, as we said, is not very cheap (195 Canadian dollars).
