If you hadn't had the chance to board the legendary Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train, the panoramic train that connects Durango and Silverton, just don't worry about that. Another fascinating way to travel the stretch that separates the two cities is definitely the equally famous Million Dollar Highway, one of the most scenic two-lane roads in the entire United States. We are traveling in a northbound, towards Silverton and then Ouray, surrounded by natural beauties with very few equals throughout Colorado. One for all Ice Lake, which we don't hesitate to define one of the most beautiful hikes in the state.

MILLION DOLLAR HIGHWAY, 70 MIGLIA SOSPESI TRA LE MONTAGNE
Quanto al fianco di una particolare strada americana si legge "All American Highway" s'intuisce immediatamente che quello che si sta percorrendo non è un percorso come gli altri. Sono in poche le strade che possono vantare un titolo che ti permette di entrare nell'elite degli on the road a stelle e strisce e le 70 miglia della Million Dollar Highway rientrano tra queste. Il nome la dice già lunga, "Million Dollar Highway", la strada da un milione di dollari, un nome la cui provenienza non è ancora stata svelata. Qualcuno sostiene che sia per via del suo costo, un milione di dollari appunto, altri per le "milioni di cose che puoi vedere", altri ancora per i milioni d'oro che sono stati trovati in quest'area. Ogni opinione ha certamente diritto di cittadinanza, perchè la Million Dollar Highway, una piccola sezione della ben più lunga San Juan Skyway, lunga 236 miglia, è stata ricchissima di oro ed è tuttora una delle mete più apprezzate per via delle sue tantissime bellezze naturali. La strada collega dal 1924 prima Durango con Silverton e poi la stessa Silverton con Ouray, tra tortuosi tornanti e viste a strapiombo sulle valli circostanti.
MILLION DOLLAR HIGHWAY, 70 MILES SUSPENDED AMONG THE MOUNTAINS
When you read "All American Highway" alongside a particular American road, you immediately realize that you're going to travel a road not like the others. There are few roads that can boast this title: it's a kind of "elite" and the 70 miles of the Million Dollar Highway are definitely proud member of this gotha The name says it all, "Million Dollar Highway", the million dollar road, a name whose origin has not been revealed yet. Some people say it is because of its cost, a million dollars precisely, others for the "millions of things you can see", others for the millions of gold that have been found in this area. Every opinion is certainly respectable, because the Million Dollar Highway, a small section of the far longer San Juan Skyway, 236 miles long, was rich in gold and is still one of the most popular destinations because of its many natural beauties. JAMES RANCH & HONEYVILLE, DUE IMPERDIBILI STOP
100 anni di miele. E' lo slogan di Honeyville, alle porte di Durango, un negozio imperdibile per chi ama le api ed il miele. Lo shop, annesso alla fabbrica, è una sorta di paradiso delle api: potrete vederle all'opera ed ammirare i macchinari con i quali l'azienda produce centinaia di prodotti sin dal 1918: dal miele alle marmellate, dagli sciroppi alle salse, dalle creme per il corpo ai liquori. Tutto ovviamente con il miele grande protagonista.
JAMES RANCH & HONEYVILLE, TWO UNMISSABLE STOP
100 years of honey. It is the slogan of Honeyville, at the gates of the city of Durango, a must-see for those who love bees and honey. The shop, attached to the factory, is a sort of paradise for bees: you can see them at work and admire the machinery with which the company produces hundreds of products since 1918: from honey to jams, from syrups to sauces, from body creams to liqueurs. Honey is obviously the main feature.

PINKERTON HOT SPRINGS, UNA SORGENTE TERMALE... SULLA STRADA
Vi abbiamo detto che la Million Dollar Highway è ricca di bellezze, ma non vi avevamo ancora avvertito che lungo le settanta miglia che separano Durango con Ouray, non mancano le... stranezze. Su tutte la Pinkerton Hot Springs, una decisamente fotogenica sorgente termale situata proprio lungo la strada. Il calore dell'acqua varia da 95 a 105 gradi farenheit. La sorgente fu scoperta nell'800 da James Pinkerton, che decise di trasformare questa misteriosa gemma in una destinazione turistica. Furono in tanti a radunarsi immediatamente a ridosso della Hot Springs, perchè era convinzione del tempo che le acque termali fossero una sorta di cura miracolosa. In breve tempo venne costruito un resort, dove si vocifera che alloggiò anche Marilyn Monroe prima che finisse bruciato.
PINKERTON HOT SPRINGS, A HOT SPRINGS ... ON THE ROAD
We have told you that the Million Dollar Highway is rich in beauty, but we have not warned you yet, that along the seventy miles that separate Durango from Ouray, there is no lack of ... oddities. One above all the Pinkerton Hot Springs, a decidedly photogenic thermal spring located just on the road. The water temperature varies from 95 to 105 degrees. The spring was discovered in the 1800s by James Pinkerton, who decided to turn this mysterious gem into a tourist destination. People almost immediately began to flock to this spot, as this was a time when many believed that hot springs were a miracle cure and their waters possessed healing powers. Pinkerton built a resort here, complete with a swimming pool filled with water from the springs.
ICE LAKE, IL SEGRETO MEGLIO CONSERVATO DEL COLORADO
In un viaggio che ci ha portato a visitare le remote Havasu Falls è difficile trovare un altro luogo che possa avvicinarsi a tale bellezza. Quello che ci va più vicino è sicuramente Ice Lake, un lago alpino dai colori incredibili incastonato a 3000 metri di altitudine a due passi dalla piccola Silverton. Quando parliamo di "segreto meglio conservato del Colorado" non esageriamo: questo splendido lago, particolarmente amato dai locali, è ancora poco conosciuto dal turismo di massa e, nonostante in una mattina d'estate ci fossero parecchi hikers lungo il trail, difficilmente troverete, a causa della lunghezza del percorso, l'affollamento che contraddistingue altri percorsi escursionistici.
ICE LAKE, COLORADO'S BEST KEPT SECRET
During a journey that led us to visit the remote Havasu Falls, it is really difficult to find another place that can come close to that beauty. The closest is definitely Ice Lake, an alpine lake made by incredible colors, set at an altitude of 3000 meters not far from the town of Silverton. When we talk about "Colorado's best kept secret" we do not exaggerate: this beautiful lake, particularly loved by locals, is still little known by european tourists. Although on a summer morning there are several people along the trail, you will hardly find, due to the length of the trail, the overcrowding that marks other hiking trails in the State.

COME SI RAGGIUNGONO ICE LAKE E LA SOUTH CREEK FALLS
Lasciata Silverton, in direzione nord, percorrete per un paio di miglia la Million Dollar Highway sino a raggiungere una deviazione sulla sinistra. Da qui seguite per qualche miglia la strada sterrata che costeggia il Mineral Creek sino a raggiungere il parcheggio dell'Ice Lake Trailhead, situato accanto al South Fork Mineral Creek Campground. Noi non abbiamo avuto tempo, ma a ridosso del campground parte il brevissimo sentiero che conduce ad un'altra splendida bellezza naturale, la South Creek Mineral Falls. Ecco, se Ice Lake è un gioiellino nascosto, le cascate lo sono ancora di più. Alte 55 piedi, sono uno degli spettacoli naturali più belli del Colorado: l'acqua è di color turchese profondo a causa della polvere di roccia che proviene dall'erosione del ghiacciaio nel corso di migliaia di anni. L'acqua blu si contrappone alla roccia rossa del fiume, e in autunno i salici e gli arbusti gialli si aggiungono alla tavolozza e offrono molte opportunità fotografiche.
HOW TO GET TO ICE LAKE AND TO THE SOUTH CREEK FALLS
Leaving Silverton, heading north, drive along the Million Dollar Highway for a couple of miles until you reach a detour to the left. From here follow for a few miles the dirt road that runs along the Mineral Creek until you get to the Ice Lake Trailhead parking lot, located next to the South Fork Mineral Creek Campground. We did not have time, but the very short trail that leads to another splendid natural beauty, the South Creek Mineral Falls, begins north of the campground. Those falls are even more than a... secret! We're talking about a 55 feet high falls, one of Colorado's most beautiful natural spectacles: the water is deep turquoise due to the rock dust that comes from glacier erosion over thousands of years. Blue water contrasts with the red rock of the river: in autumn, the willows and yellow shrubs offer many photo opportunities.

TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE SU ICE LAKE
Pianificare l'escursione ad Ice Lake è molto semplice. Il trail comincia al parcheggio del campground (C'è un guest book da firmare con nome, data e orario di inizio del trekking) e conduce a tre laghi, il secondo dei quali è proprio Upper Ice Lake. La lunghezza dell'intero trail, qualora decideste di visitare tutti e tre i laghi, è di 8.1 miglia tra andata e ritorno, un'escursione di certo impegnativa, ma che vi ripagherà di ogni singolo sforzo fatto. Considerate almeno tre ore per raggiungere la cima e quindi sia Ice Lake che Island Lake, un paio per tornare al parcheggio. Perdersi è sostanzialmente impossibile, fate attenzione solamente verso la fine, ad un miglio dal raggiungimento di Ice Lake. Qui, infatti, sarete obbligati ad attraversare il torrente e risalire (verso sinistra) la montagna sino al lago.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ICE LAKE
Planning the excursion to Ice Lake is very simple. The trail begins at the campground parking lot at the South Mineral Valley (there is a guest book to sign with name, date and time) and leads to three lakes, the second of which is the famous Upper Ice Lake. The length of the entire trail, if you decide to visit all the three lakes, is 8.1 miles round-trip, an excursion that is certainly challenging, but that will repay you for every single effort made. Consider at least three hours to reach the top and then both Ice Lake and Island Lake, a couple of hours to return to the parking lot. Getting lost is basically impossible, be careful only at the end of it, a mile before Ice Lake. Here, in fact, you will be forced to cross the stream and climb (to the left) the mountain that leads to lake.

DAL PARCHEGGIO AL PRIMO LAGO, IL LOWER ICE LAKE
Le prime due miglia sono decisamente impegnative. Si sale immediatamente di 500 metri e vi troverete immersi tra foreste e prati pieni di fiori selvatici, ma anche piccole cascate e le prime vedute sui ghiacciai di Fuller, Vermillion Peak, Golden Horn e Pilot Knob. Il sentiero segue i contorni del lower basin sino a raggiungere il primo lago, il Lower Ice Lake. Il nostro consiglio è di ammirarlo in lontananza dal sentiero, perchè è il meno scenografico dei tre. Conservate le energie per l'Upper Ice Lake ed Island Lake.
FROM THE PARKING TO THE FIRST LAKE, THE LOWER ICE LAKE
The head of the South Mineral Valley is the starting point for Ice Lake. The trail wastes no time gaining elevation, climbing 1,600-ft. in 2-miles through forests and wildflower-filled meadows to the beautiful Lower Ice Lakes basin, but also small waterfalls and the first views of the Fuller, Vermillion Peak, Golden Horn and Pilot Knob glaciers. The trail follows the contours of the lower basin until it reaches the first lake, the Lower Ice Lake. Our advice is to admire it in the distance from the trail, because it is the least scenic of the three. Save your energy for the Upper Ice Lake and Island Lake.

UPPER ICE LAKE, NEL BLU DIPINTO DI BLU
Il sentiero ora propone pendenze più dolci, dopo aver lasciato (sulla sinistra), il lower Ice Lake. Tra la fine di luglio e l'inizio di agosto i prati ben irrigati intorno alle cascate ospitano spettacolari fiori selvatici. No, durante il trekking verso Ice Lake non c'è davvero mai il tempo per annoiarsi. Raggiunto il fiume, dovrete per forza bagnarvi nell'attraversarlo, prima di una ripida risalita verso l'Upper Ice Lake.
UPPER ICE LAKE, THE DEEP BLUE LAKE
The trail now offers gentler slopes, after leaving (on the left) the lower Ice Lake. Between the end of July and the beginning of August, the well-watered meadows around the waterfalls host spectacular wild flowers. Well, while hiking to Ice Lake there's no chance to get bored. Once you reach the river, you will have to get wet when crossing it, before a steep ascent to the Upper Ice Lake.

L'Upper Ice Lake sarà contornato da una tundra subalpina costellata di fiori selvatici. L'US Grant Peak sorge a nord. In senso orario noterete inoltre le vette Fuller Peak, Vermillion Peak, Golden Horn e Pilot Knob: tutte superano abbondantemente i 3000 metri.

ISLAND LAKE, L'ISOLA IN MEZZO AL LAGO
All'Upper Ice Lake non sarete soli. Tutti si fermano qui per pranzo o semplicemente per ammirare un panorama fantastico. Qualche eroe (non possiamo non definirlo in questo modo), farà anche un tuffo nelle sue gelide acque, mentre voi vi starete chiedendo se sia il caso o meno di proseguire o meno verso il terzo dei laghi, Island Lake, allungando così il percorso di un ulteriore miglio.
ISLAND LAKE, THE ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LAKE
You will not be alone once at the Upper Ice Lake. Everyone stops here for lunch or simply to admire a fantastic panorama. Some heroes (we can just call them in this way!) will also take a dip in its very cold waters, while you have to take a difficult decision: continue toward the third of the lakes, Island Lake (1 mile) or go back...
Anche noi ce lo siamo chiesti e la risposta ce l'hanno data i locali presenti sul posto. "Non c'è stanchezza che tenga, Island Lake va visto". Ed ovviamente avevano ragione. Attraversate nuovamente il fiume a ridosso dell'Upper Ice Lake e seguite il sentiero che sale sul pendio erboso verso nord-est.
We also asked that question and the answer was given to us by the locals on site. "Who cares tiredness, Island Lake must be seen". And obviously they were right. Cross the river again behind the Upper Ice Lake and follow the path that climbs up the grassy slope towards the northeast.

Dopo una ventina di minuti buoni troverete ad attendervi il maestoso Island Lake ma, mentre si sale, continuerete a guardarvi indietro: sotto di voi entrambi i bacini del lower e dell'upper Ice Lake. Una volta raggiunto Island Lake potrete continuare e completare il loop che conduce nuovamente al parcheggio, oppure rientrare sui vostri passi e percorrere il trail al contrario.
After twenty minutes you will see the majestic Island Lake, but as you're climbing, you will keep to look back: below you there are both the lower and upper Ice Lake basins. Once you reach Island Lake you can continue and complete the loop that leads back to the parking lot, or retrace your steps and walk the trail backwards.
La scelta migliore è ovviamente la prima, ma ancora oggi non ci capacitiamo del perchè noi abbiamo fatto l'esatto contrario. Forse perchè ancora affascinati dallo spettacolo che avevamo appena visto...

Un'immagine, appunto, da copertina. Il suo soprannome è "la Svizzera d'America" e non pensiamo ci sia bisogno di aggiungere altro...
OURAY, A POSTCARD TOWN
After leaving Ice Lake, it's time to get back to the Million Dollar Highway towards Ouray, one of the five most beautiful cities in Colorado. The view from the view point located in the hills, a mile before entering the city, is just like the one that appears in the themse song of Netfilx TV series "The Ranch", a sit com where Ashton Kutcher is struggling with the management of the family ranch in Colorado. It's just a postcard town. Its nickname is "the Switzerland of America" and there's no need to say anything else.
