The Hiking Trip - Arizona, Colorado and Utah (day 10: Montrose - Colorado Springs. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Royal Gorge Bridge & Skyline Drive)

Montrose è considerata la "gate town" del south rim di un parco nazionale poco visitato dai turisti (solo 200.000 visitatori l'anno), che raramente si spingono oltre la "Million Dollar Highway" sino alla remota zona del centro su del Colorado. Eppure il Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park rappresenta uno dei luoghi più spettacolari dello stato, con le sue pareti di pietra grigia che si ergono oltre i 2600 piedi sopra il fiume Gunnison (da cui il parco prende il nome) che lo rendono indubbiamente il Canyon più affascinante dell'intero Colorado. Un lavoro di oltre di 2 milioni di anni da parte dell'acqua, talmente profondo da aver "regalato" un nome del tutto particolare all'intera area: Black Canyon of Gunnison. Perchè black, nero? La risposta è molto semplice. Le zone più profonde del canyon infatti, ricevono solamente 30 minuti circa di luce al giorno, una rarità assoluta nel panorama dei parchi nazionali americani.

Montrose is considered the "gate town" of the south rim of a national park hardly visited by tourists (only 200,000 visitors every year), which rarely go beyond the "Million Dollar Highway". Yet the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is one of the most spectacular places in the state, with its gray stone walls rising over 2600 feet above the Gunnison River (from which the park takes its name): it is definitely the most fascinating canyon in the whole Colorado. A work of over 2 million years made by water, so deep that it has given a very special name to the whole area: Black Canyon of Gunnison. Why black? The answer is very simple. The deepest areas of the canyon, in fact, receive only about 30 minutes of light a day, an absolute rarity in the panorama of American national parks.

Anche questo Canyon, come il più famoso Grand Canyon, si divide in due aree, il south rim ed il north rim. Il south rim è l'area più semplice da visitare, se non altro per il fatto che tutte le strade sono asfaltate. Ma a prescindere da quale "rim" deciderete di approfondire, non dimenticate che il Black Canyon of the Gunnison non è aperto sempre. Il south rim ed il north rim sono aperti alle vetture solo da aprile a novembre (in inverno troverete chiuso dal Gunnison Point in poi nella sezione del south rim).

Even this Canyon, like the more famous Grand Canyon, is divided into two areas, the south rim and the north rim. The south rim is the easiest area to visit, if only for the fact that all the roads are paved. But regardless of which "rim" you decide to visit, don't forget that the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is not always open. The south rim and the north rim are open to cars only from April to November (in winter the road is just open till Gunnison Point in the south rim).

VISITARE IL SOUTH RIM DEL BLACK CANYON OF GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK
L'area che abbiamo visitato e di cui parleremo è quella del South Rim, attraversata dalla decisamente scenografica South Rim Drive, una strada lunga 11 km (sola andata) e che si estende dal Tomichi Point sino all'High Point, offrendo ben 10 view point durante il percorso. Non mancano ovviamente neppure i trails, molti dei quali catalogabili come semplici passeggiate che consentono di ammirare da posizione privilegiata le splendide gole formate dal fiume Gunnison. E, se doveste avere più tempo a disposizione, potrete anche percorrere la East Portal, una ripidissima strada (4 km al 16% di pendenza) che conduce al fiume Gunnison.

VISIT THE SOUTH RIM OF THE BLACK CANYON OF GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK
The area we visited and will talk about is the South Rim area, crossed by the decidedly scenic South Rim Drive, a road (11 km - one way) that extends from Tomichi Point to High Point and offers 10 views point. Of course there are also various trails and many of them can be classified as simple walks that allow you to admire from a privileged position the beautiful gorges formed by the Gunnison river. And, if you have more time, you can also take the East Portal road, a steep road (4 km at 16% gradient) that leads to the Gunnison River.

Come sempre, il consiglio è di fermarsi al visitor center, non solo per ricevere tutte le informazioni del caso dai sempre preparatissimi rangers, ma anche per percorrere i brevissimi sentieri che conducono i diversi punti di osservazione che regalano viste su Gunnison Point, Chasm View e Painted Wall. Lasciato il visitor center, tornate indietro di qualche centinaio di metri con la propria vettura, sino a raggiungere il primo dei 10 view point che vi consigliamo:

As always, the advice is to stop at the visitor center, not only to get all the necessary information from the always-trained rangers, but also to walk the short trails which lead to the different observation points that offer amazing views of Gunnison Point, Chasm View and Painted Wall. After leaving the visitor center, take your car and go back a few hundred meters until you reach the first of the 10 view points that we recommend:

1) Tomichi Point

Il primo approccio con il Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park avviene qui. La prima cosa che noterete è l'imponente colore nero che è icona del parco.

2) Gunnison Point

Se non l'avete già percorso durante la visita al visitor center, seguite il piccolo sentiero di 0.2 miglia che parte proprio dietro il centro visitatori e che conduce al Gunnison Point. E' uno dei trail più semplici, catalogato da "Alltrails" come quarto migliore del parco.

3) Pulpit Rock Overlook

Brevissimo trail di 0.1 miglia che conduce al Pulpit Rock Overlook. Qui avrete una visione più ampia del parco.

4) Cross Fissures Trail

Altro breve trail di 0.3 miglia (loop trail) che porta al canyon, da dove ammirare le "fessure". Classificato come numero 16 da "Alltrails".

5) Chasm View Trail

Percorso di 0.8 miglia (loop trail) che vi regalerà una bellissima vista su Chasm View. Classificato al numero 5.

6) Painted Wall View Trail

Ecco un trail da non perdere, il brevissimo (0.4 miglia, andata e ritorno) sentiero posizionato al numero 3 in classifica e che permette di ammirare il contrasto tra il granito rosa del lato opposto del canyon ed il nero della parte iniziale.

7) Cedar Point Nature Trail

Altro trail di 0.6 miglia (andata e ritorno) che a differenza del precedente, vi consentirà di ammirare sia Painted Wall che il fiume Gunnison. Classificato al numero 11.

8) Dragon point trail

Situato vicino al Cedar Point Nature Trail, il Dragon Point è molto simile al "fratello" anche in termini di distanza (0.6 miglia, andata e ritorno). Per questo consigliamo di percorrerne solamente uno dei due.

9) High Point

L'ultimo view point prima che la strada si concluda. Da qui parte il Warner Point Trail (1.5 miglia, ranking: 1) il percorso probabilmente più bello del Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park. Non tanto per le viste, simili a quelle precedenti, ma per la vastità del canyon che si aprirà davanti ai vostri occhi.

10) Oak Flat Trail

Dopo che avrete percorso l'intera South Rim Drive, vi consigliamo di tornare al visitor center e percorrere le 1.3 miglia in loop del Oak Flat Trail (ranking: 2).

1) Tomichi Point

The first approach to the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park takes place here. You'll immediately notice the imposing black color that is the park icon.

2) Gunnison Point

If you haven't already been there while visiting the visitor center, follow the small 0.2 miles trail that starts right behind the visitor center and leads to the Gunnison Point. It's one of the simplest trails, cataloged by "Alltrails" as the park's fourth best trail.

3) Pulpit Rock Overlook

Very short (0.1 miles) trail leading to the Pulpit Rock Overlook. Here you will have a wider view of the park.

4) Cross Fissures Trail

Another short trail (0.3 miles loop trail) leading to the canyon: you'll see the "cracks". Rank at number 16 by "Alltrails".

5) Chasm View Trail

A 0.8 miles loop trail that will give you a beautiful view of Chasm View. Rank at number 5.

6) Painted Wall View Trail

You shouldn't miss this very short (0.4 miles, round trip) trail rank at number 3 which allows you to admire the contrast between the pink granite on the opposite side of the canyon and the black of the initial part.

7) Cedar Point Nature Trail

Another 0.6 miles trail (round trip) that unlike the previous one, allows to admire both Painted Wall and the Gunnison River. Ranked at number 11.

8) Dragon point trail

Located near the Cedar Point Nature Trail, the Dragon Point is very similar to the "brother" (0.6 miles, round trip). For this reason we suggest you to cover only one of the two.

9) High Point

The last view point before the road ends. The Warner Point Trail (1.5 miles, ranking: 1) which is probably the most beautiful trailo in the south rim of the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park, starts here. Not only for the amazing views, but also for the more vast look of the canyon at the end

10) Oak Flat Trail

You covered the entire South Rim Drive. If you have enough time, come back to the visitor center and hike the 1.3 miles (loop) of the Oak Flat Trail (ranking: 2).

LA CENTRAL MOUNTAINS, TRA MONTAGNE, VALLATE E TANTA NATURA
Montagne e vallate caratterizzano i 300 ed oltre km che separano il parco nazionale e Colorado Springs. Attraverserete splendide foreste come la Gunnison National Forest e altrettanto scenografiche aree ricreazionali come il Curecanti National Recreation Area. Con il fiume Gunnison a fare sempre da sottofondo. Soprattutto nella prima parte, sarete a stretto contatto con la natura, mentre la civiltà farà capolino una volta raggiunta la cittadina di Gunnison. Subito dopo la strada comincerà a salire vertiginosamente lungo i monti Monarch sino a raggiungere il continental divide, ovvero lo spartiacque che divide il bacino idrografico dei fiumi che finiscono nell'Oceano Atlantico (e nel Mar Glaciale Artico) da quello dei fiumi che finiscono nell'Oceano Pacifico. In cima al Monarch Pass troverete un carinissimo gift shop ed una funivia che con 10 dollari vi conduce in cima alla montagna.

SALIDA, IL CUORE DELLE ROCKIES
Se Poncha Springs è considerata il "crossroads delle Rockies", Salida è invece conosciuta come "Heart of the Rockies", il cuore delle Rockies. Essa è tuttavia anche rinomata per i suoi vini. Una delle cantine più famose è la Mountain Spirit Winery, che produce vini di alta qualità su cinque acri di terreni agricoli. Ma non è finita qui: il suo downtown, iscritto nel Registro Nazionale dei luoghi storici, è il più grande "Historical District del Colorado".

SFIDARE L'ALTEZZA AL ROYAL GORGE BRIDGE PARK
Una vvolta raggiunto il The Gold Mine Rock Shop a Canon City (44864 W US Highway 50 Cañon City), un negozio particolare dentro il quale potrete ammirare rocce e gemme estratte direttamente dalle miniere, svoltate a destra e dirigetevi al Royal Gorge Bridge Park, semplicemente quello che dal 1929 al 2001 è risultato essere il ponte più alto al mondo. Purtroppo l'unica possibilità di ammirare gratuitamente il ponte (da molto lontano) è dall'ampio parcheggio, perchè da molti anni a questa parte il Royal Gorge Bridge fa parte di un parco divertimenti costruito su misura per rendere una storica bellezza americana un luogo per famiglie.

THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS AREA, NATURE AT ITS BEST
Mountains and valleys characterize the 300 and more km that separate the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Colorado Springs. You will pass through beautiful forests such as the Gunnison National Forest and equally scenic recreational areas such as the Curecanti National Recreation Area. With the Gunnison River always in the background. Especially in the first part, you will be closely with nature, while civilization appears as soon as you get to the town of Gunnison. Immediately afterwards, the road will begin to climb steeply along the Monarch Mountains until it reaches the continental divid. At the top of the Monarch Pass you will find a cute gift shop and a cable car that leads to the top of the mountain (10 dollars)

SALIDA, THE HEART OF THE ROCKIES

DEFYING HEIGHTS AT THE ROYAL GORGE BRIDGE PARK
Once you get to The Gold Mine Rock Shop in Canon City (44864 W US Highway 50 Cañon City), a particular store where you can admire rocks and gems extracted directly from the mines, turn right and head to the Royal Gorge Bridge Park, simply rhe bridge that held the record of highest bridge in the world from 1929 until 2001 when it was surpassed by the Liuguanghe Bridge in China. Unfortunately the only possibility to admire the bridge free of charge (from far away) is from the ample parking lot, because the Royal Gorge Bridge is now part of the amusement park built to make a historic American beauty a place for families.

The bridge, which is still today the highest in the United States, is objectively beautiful: it connects the two banks of the canyon and gives an incomparable view from above on the Royal Gorge and the Arkansas river. It is 384 meters long, 5.5 meters wide, while the central span is 286 meters high.

Numeri da brividi, che poi saranno le sensazioni che proverete attraversandolo, mentre ammirerete il paesaggio circostante e le bandiere che rappresentano i 50 stati americani posizionate lungo tutto il ponte.

That's really shocking. You'll certainly notice the flags that represent the 50 American states while admiring the surrounding landscape.

INFO, ORARI E PREZZI
Il parco. che durante il periodo estivo chiude alle ore 19 (per gli altri orari vi consigliamo di consultare il sito internet https://royalgorgebridge.com/hours-directions/), è un luogo perfetto soprattutto se state viaggiando con i bambini. Il costo del biglietto per ammirare il ponte non è tuttavia proprio economicissimo (23 dollari per gli adulti, 18 per i bambini dai 5 ai 12 anni, aggiornato al 2019), così come le attrazioni, che si pagano a parte. Si va dai 40 dollari dello zip-line ai 60 della combo zip-line più roller coaster.

HOURS, INFOS AND ADMISSION TICKETS
The park. which during the summer period closes at 7.00 pm (for other times of the year we suggest you to check the website site https://royalgorgebridge.com/hours-directions/), is a perfect place especially if you are traveling with children. However, the admission ticket, which allow you to admire the bridge is not really cheap (23 dollars for adults, 18 for children aged 5 to 12, updated to 2019), as well as the attractions, which are paid separately. They range from $ 40 (the zip-line) to 60 dollars (combo Zipline and Skycoaster ride)

Visitare il parco tuttavia, non significa solamente ammirare il ponte. Inclusa nel prezzo del biglietto è compreso anche il viaggio sulla Aerial Gondola, la bellissima funivia che attraversa il canyon e vi regala probabilmente la miglior vista sul ponte stesso.

However, visiting the park does not only mean admiring the bridge. Included in the ticket price is also the trip on the Aerial Gondola, the beautiful cable car that runs through the canyon and probably gives you the best view of the bridge itself. It glides 2,200 feet across the Gorge, 1,200 feet high above the Arkansas River.

I più piccoli si divertiranno al Tommy Knocker Playland, una ricostruzione di un piccolo villaggio west fatto di attrazioni divertenti: su tutte il carosello. Gli amanti del brivido non potranno non acquistare il ticket per lo sky-coaster, una delle giostre più adrenaliniche del Colorado. Siete pronti a volare ad oltre 50 miglia a quasi 400 metri di altitudine?

LA SKYLINE DRIVE, LA STRADA CHE PORTA AL... CIELO
Quando si parla di adrenalina tuttavia, nulla batte la mitica Skyline Drive. Siamo ancora a Canon City, ormai non lontani da Colorado Spring, lungo le 3 miglia più incredibili del centro sud del Colorado. Ma andiamo con ordine. Per percorrere la Skyline Drive dovrete seguire la "50" (provenendo da est) fino alle porte di Canon City, impostando nel navigatore gps il seguente indirizzo: 49311 W U.S. 50 unit b, Cañon City. Sulla sinistra noterete un arco, che segna l'inizio della Skyline Drive.

THE SKYLINE DRIVE, THE ROAD THAT LEADS TO ... HEAVEN
When it comes to adrenaline, however, nothing beats the legendary Skyline Drive. We are still in Canon City, now not far from Colorado Spring, along the 3 most incredible miles of the central southern Colorado. All right, first things first. To travel the Skyline Drive you will have to follow the "50" (coming from the east) up to the Canon City gates, setting the following address in the GPS navigator: 49311 W U.S. 50 units b, Cañon City. On the left you will notice an arch, which marks the beginning of the Skyline Drive.

La strada, costruita da detenuti nel 1905, è del tutto particolare perchè oltre ad essere ad un solo senso di marcia, si piega, si snoda, si arrampica e "cade" come un ottovolante fin quasi alla fine, dove regala una prospettiva panoramica sia sulla città (est) che sull'autostrada (ovest).

The road, built by inmate labor in 1905, is quite special because in addition to being one-way, its steep, cliff-side climb makes you feel as though you are "off-roading" from the comfort of your passenger car. It gives a panoramic view both on the city (east) and on the highway (west)

Si sale di quasi 300 metri in circa un km, non ci sono guardrails e non vi è nessuna possibilità di fare retromarcia. Solo in cima, dove la strada sarà più larga dei soliti 5 metri buoni, potrete fermarvi e godere del panorama. Le immagini, una volta tanto, non rendono giustizia ad una delle strade più adrenaliniche del Colorado.

The single-lane, one-way road rises about 800 feet (240 meters) above the surrounding terrain. There are no guardrails despite sharp dropoffs, and the drive is about 3 miles (4.83 kilometers) long. Only at the top, where the road will be wider than the usual 5 meters, you can stop and enjoy the view. The images, for once, do not do justice to one of the most adrenaline-fueled roads in Colorado.

Per gli amanti della natura e dell'attività fisica Colorado Springs rappresenta una sorta di paradiso, una di quelle città che non dovrebbero mai essere considerate "di passaggio" durante un on the road negli Stati Uniti. Che siano due o tre giorni, che sia una settimana intera, Colorado Springs, la città regina della Pikes Peak Region (seconda per numero di abitanti in tutto il Colorado dietro Denver) non vi deluderà. Già, perchè nel raggio di circa 75 km, troverete bellezze naturali con pochissimi eguali, avventure mozzafiato e montagne da primato.

For nature and physical activity lover, Colorado Springs represents a sort of paradise, one of those cities that should never be considered a stopover during a road trip in the United States. Whether you're going to spend there two or three days, or even a whole week, Colorado Springs, the queen city of Pikes Peak Region (the second most populous city of Colorado after Denver) will not disappoint you. Yes, because within a radius of about 75 km, you will find natural beauty with very few equals, breathtaking adventures and record-breaking mountains.

Posizionata strategicamente ai piedi del Pikes Peak Mountain (4302 metri), Colorado Springs è conosciuta anche e soprattutto per il Garden of the Gods, il giardino degli Dei, considerato, il più bel parco degli Stati Uniti tra quelli non facenti parte delle categoria dei National e State Park. Eppure, Colorado Springs è decisamente, molto di più, per questo abbiamo voluto creare una sorta di itinerario di due giorni per visitare il meglio dell'area, consapevoli tuttavia che due giorni pieni non ci sono bastati per visitare tutto quello che la Pikes Peak Region offre. Già, perchè Colorado Springs è anche la città olimpica degli Stati Uniti e sede del Museo Olimpico e Paralimpico degli Stati Uniti, che sarà inaugurato nella primavera del 2020. E' anche la casa dell' US Air Force Academy. Ecco cosa vedere a Colorado Springs in due giorni.

Strategically positioned at the base of Pikes Peak Mountain (4302 meters), Colorado Springs is also and above all known for the Garden of the Gods, considered the most beautiful park in the United States among those not belonging to the National and State Parks. THE THREE KINDS OF ADVENTURE OFFERED BY THE ECHO CANYONS
Easy, intermediate and for experienced There are three types of adventures offered by the Echo Canyon River Expeditions, which are basically suitable for all types of experience and skills. CAVE OF THE WINDS MOUNTAIN PARK, TRA CAVERNE E GIOSTRE DA BRIVIDI
D'accordo, la seconda giornata promettiamo di dedicarla alla natura, la prima è invece un'avventura dopo l'altra. Già, perchè dopo la mattinata spesa lungo le sponde dell'Arkansas River, siamo tornati a Colorado Springs, anzi nella vicina Manitou Springs, in cima ad una ripidissima stradina di montagna. E' qui, infatti che sorge, un parco intrigante, dove natura, conoscenza e divertimento di fondono, regalando ai turisti un pomeriggio davvero insolito: il Cave of the Winds Mountain Park. Se da una parte, infatti, potrete esplorare i misteri delle caverne sotterranee, scoperte nel lontano 1881, dall'altra potrete vivere l'adrenalina di alcune delle giostre più "scary", come amano definirle gli americani, dello stato.

CAVE OF THE WINDS MOUNTAIN PARK - CAVERNS AND THRILLING RIDES
Okay, we promise that the day 2 will be dedicated to nature, but the day 1 is just one new adventure after another. We spent the morning along the banks of the Arkansas River, but now its time to come back to to Colorado Springs, or rather to nearby Manitou Springs, on top of a very steep mountain road. It is here, in fact, that an intriguing park, where nature, knowledge and entertainment are encountered, giving tourists a truly unusual afternoon: the Cave of the Winds Mountain Park. If on one hand, in fact, you will be able to explore the mysteries of the underground caverns, discovered as far back as 1881, on the other you will be able to experience the adrenaline of some of the most thrilling rides of the state.

LA VISITA ALLE CAVERNE - I TRE TOUR POSSIBILITA'
La grande attrazione sono ovviamente le caverne, visitabili solamente tramite un tour guidato ad orari prestabiliti. Di gran lunga la sezione più famosa  è la sala Silent Splendor. Scoperta nel 1984, la stanza contiene numerosi rari speleotemi cristallini. La grotta è stata inoltre la cornice di un episodio del 2006 della serie televisiva animata South Park, intitolata "ManBearPig".

VISIT TO THE CAVERNS - THE THREE TOURS 
The great attraction is obviously the cave, which can only be visited on a guided tour at set times. By far the most famous section is the Silent Splendor room. Discovered in 1984, the room contains numerous rare crystalline speleothems. The cave was also the setting for a 2006 episode of the animated television series South Park, entitled "ManBearPig".

Tre sono invece i tour e, come spesso succede, si passa dalla "semplice" visita ad un'avventura vera e propria, tra arrampicate e molto altro. Il più gettonato è certamente il DISCOVERY TOUR, un tour di 45 minuti (prezzo: 15 dollari), durante il quale scenderai per ben 196 scalini per avventurarti nella parte illuminata delle grotte ammirando ben 15 stanze. Il LANTERN TOUR (90 minuti, 18 dollari) è un tour (a lume di candela) più approfondito, dove potrai scendere ancor più in profondità. Come gli avventurieri del passato, navigherai tra tunnel scuri e stretti, passaggi bassi, scale irregolari e stanze con pavimenti fangosi e originali. Imparerai la storia di Cave of the Winds, il terrificante folklore, le storie di fantasmi spaventosi e i fenomeni inspiegabili dei Manitou Grands mentre il CAVING 101 è un'autentico viaggio nel tempo. Il tour di due ore (prezzo: 45 dollari), è un percorso sotterraneo nel quale dovrai arrampicarti, strisciare per terra, etc. nelle aree selvagge delle caverne.

There are three tours offered and, as often happens, you'll have many choices. From the easiest tour to a...  real adventure, which includes climbing and much more. The most popular is certainly the DISCOVERY TOUR, where you can explore the electrically lit portion of the Cave of the Winds on a 45 – 60 minute guided walking tour which includes 15 rooms, a 1/2 mile of concrete walkways, and 196 stairs (ticket price: 15 dollars). With the LANTERN TOUR (90 minutes, 18 dollars) you explore, by candlelight, the mysterious and unimproved Manitou Grand Caverns on a 90-minute guided walking tour nearly a mile long. Like the adventurers of the past, you will navigate dark narrow tunnels, low passageways, uneven stairs, and rooms with muddy, original floors. You will learn the history of Cave of the Winds as well as the frightening folklore, scary ghost stories, and unexplained phenomena of the Manitou Grands. The CAVING 101 is a true journey through time. The two-hour tour (price: $ 45) into the wild, undeveloped depths of the Manitou Grand Caverns that involves an assortment of crawling, climbing, and walking through wet and muddy passages of various sizes. On this tour, you will crawl/climb/walk for nearly a mile while learning basic spelunking skills as well as the history and geology of the cave.

LE GIOSTRE - SIETE PRONTI PER IL TERROR DACTYL?
Il menù delle attrazioni è decisamente ricco. Già, perchè il Cave of The Winds Mountain Park non è soltanto... caverne. Nel parco sono posizionate, infatti, alcune delle giostre più adrenaliniche dello stato e ce n''è davvero per tutti i gusti. La prima che troverete, a ridosso dell'entrata, è il The Wind Walker Challenge Course, un percorso lungo travi in acciaio, funi e oscillanti e scale: una piccola parte del percorso è addirittura a strapiombo sul Williams Canyon. Gli amanti del mondo virtuale non potranno mancare il Teatro delle Lanterne Magiche, dove sperimenterete vedutee aeree in volo e molto altro. Vi sembrerà davvero di essere sul posto.

The attractions menu is very rich. you have to know that the Cave of The Winds Mountain Park isn't just ... caves. In fact, some of the most adrenaline-filled rides in the state are located in the park and there is really something for everyone. The first ride is located close to entrance, on the right: the Wind Walker Challenge Course. You'll experience fun and adventure on a unique 3-story obstacle course. Balanced atop the edge of Williams Canyon, with a 600 foot drop, the Wind Walker Challenge Course will thrill you with its maze of steel beams, ropes, and ladders. Il brivido sale decisamente con il Bat-A-Pult, un'epica attrazione aerea lunga quasi 400 metri e sospesa sul bellissimo e selvaggio Williams Canyon. Viaggerete ad una velocità di 40 miglia orari...

It takes you to the skies on the Bat-a-Pult, an epic 1200-foot aerial attraction high along beautiful Williams Canyon. The ride leaves from its roost high in the rafters of our Pavilion, launching you on an epic, 1,200-foot round-trip flight across Williams Canyon at speeds of nearly 40 mph

L'ultima, ma non per importanza (anzi..) tra le attrazioni è la pazzesca Terror Dactyl. Vi basterà consultare qualche foto (o video) in internet, per intuire che in questa circostanza i creatori del parco si sono superati. Un seggiolino che cade nel vuoto all'interno del canyon a quasi 100 miglia all'ora, poco più di 160 km orari. La forza G di questa attrazione vi lascerà a bocca aperta.

The last, but not least among the attractions is the amazing Terror Dactyl. All you have to do is check some pictures (or videos) on the internet, to realize that the creators of the park have outdone themselves. A seat that falls over the edge into the canyon at almost 100 miles per hour, just over 160 km per hour. The G force of this attraction will leave you speechless.

The Hiking Trip - Arizona, Colorado and Utah (day 12: Colorado Springs & Pikes Peak Region: Broadmoor Seven Falls, Garden of the Gods and much more)

Se non ve l'avessimo ancora detto, lo facciamo ora. Una di quelle città in cui varrebbe la pena trasferirsi se amate la natura e la vita all'aria aperta è Colorado Springs, meno pubblicizzata di altre più famose, ma non per questo meno affascinante. Pensate ad esempio al jogging post lavoro, che gli abitanti di Colorado Springs possono effettuare nel parco oggettivamente più affascinante degli Stati Uniti, il Garden of The Gods, ovvero il Giardino degli Dei. Il nome la dice già lunga su un luogo che grazie alle sue enormi formazioni rocciose in arenaria rosse, spicca all'interno di una città che di rosso ha ben poco...

If we haven't told you yet, we'll do it now. One of those cities where it would be worth moving to if you love nature and outdoor life is definitely Colorado Springs, less publicized than other famous ones, but no less fascinating. Think, for example, of post-work jogging, which the inhabitants of Colorado Springs can do in the most objectively fascinating park in the United States, the Garden of the Gods. The name says it all on a place that thanks to its huge red sandstone rock formations, stands out in the entire area.

COME VISITARE IL GARDEN OF THE GODS
Il Garden of The Gods è uno di quei luoghi dove perdersi, dove poter passare qualche oretta o anche una giornata intera. Non dimenticandosi però che, soprattutto durante il periodo estivo, il parco è preso di mira anche dai tantissimi turisti che lo rendono di fatto uno dei luoghi più visitati del Colorado e addirittura... quasi piccolo nonostante abbia una superficie di 1400 acri. La visita del parco (gratuita), non può non cominciare dal Visitor Center, che funge anche da museo. Qui potrete reperire anche una mappa con i trail, che non sono così semplici da seguire perchè spesso s'intrecciano l'un l'altro. Situato a ridosso del Visitor Center è il Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site (ingresso a pagamento), una fattoria e museo che descrive la vita nella regione del Peak Pikes in quattro periodi: dall'area indiana americana nel 1775 ai primi del '900.

HOW TO VISIT THE GARDEN OF THE GODS
The Garden of The Gods is one of those places where you can get lost, where you can spend an hour or even a whole day. Not forgetting, however, that, especially during the summer, the park is also targeted by the many tourists that make the Garden of The Gods one of the most visited places in Colorado. The visit of the park (free of charge), starts from the Visitor Center, which also serves as a museum. Here you can also find a map with the trails, which are not so easy to follow because they often intertweave each other. Located near the Visitor Center is the Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site (admission fee), a farm and museum that describes life in the Peak Pikes region in four periods: from the American Indian area in 1775 to the early 1900s.

QUALE TRAIL SCEGLIERE AL GARDEN OF THE GODS
Quando si visita il Garden of The Gods, probabilmente la scelta più difficile riguarda quale sentiero percorrere tra gli oltre 25 km di trail a disposizione di locali e turisti, tutti ben segnalati e facilmente raggiungibili. Noi, avendo poco tempo a disposizione, abbiamo scelto di evitare la parte centrale del parco, ovvero quella più affollata (nonostante la pioggia!) di un pomeriggio di agosto. E allora, andando probabilmente controcorrente, nella nostra virtuale classifica dei migliori trail del Garden of The Gods inseriamo il Siamese Twins Trail, che il fidato "alltrails" inserisce al numero 3 nella speciale classifica dei sentieri del parco.

WHICH IS THE BEST TRAIL AT THE GARDEN OF THE GODS?
When visiting the Garden of The Gods, tt's difficult, choosing which trail walk among the 25 km of paths available to locals and tourists, all well signposted and easily accessible. We had a little time and chose to avoid the central part of the park, which was the most crowded (despite the rain!) in that August afternoon. And then, probably swimming against the tide, in our virtual ranking of the best trails of the Garden of The Gods we put Siamese Twins Trail, which the trusty "alltrails" places at number 3 in the special ranking of the park's trails.

Il Siamese Twins Trail, raggiungibile comodamente dall'area di parcheggio dedicata, è un trail di 0.8 km in loop che conduce a onformazioni rocciose particolarmente curiose. E' uno dei pochi percorsi che consente di ammirare, quasi come se emergesse dalle rocce rosse, la mitica cima del Pikes Peak.

The Siamese Twins Trail, easily reachable from the dedicated parking area, is a 0.8 km loop trail that leads to particularly curious rock. It is one of the few paths that allows to see, almost as if it emerged from the red rocks, the mythical Pikes Peak.

GLI ALTRI CINQUE MIGLIORI SENTIERI DEL GARDEN OF THE GODS
La possibilità di effettuare passeggiate, più o meno lunghe, non si limita certamente al Siamese Twins Trail. Nella nostra top five degli altri sentieri percorribili al Garden of The Gods non può mancare sicuramente il Perkins Central Garden Trail, il sentiero probabilmente più famoso del parco. Lungo 1.8 km in loop, il trail che comincia nella zona nord del parco, conduce al cuore del Garden of The Gods e permette di ammirare le famose Kissing Camels, ovvero una particolare roccia che ha assunto la forma di due cammelli che sembrano baciarsi. Come vi abbiamo anticipato, il trail ne incrocia altri ed è facile non tanto perdersi, ma finire in un altro percorso.

THE OTHER FIVE BEST TRAILS OF THE GARDEN OF THE GODS
The possibility of taking walks, more or less long, is certainly not limited to the Siamese Twins Trail. In our top five of the other walkable trails at the Garden of The Gods, there's certainly the Perkins Central Garden Trail, the park's probably most famous trail (1.8 km loop trail). The trail begins north of the park, leads to the heart of the Garden of The Gods and allows you to admire the famous Kissing Camels, or a particular rock that has taken the form of two camels that seem to kiss each other. As we anticipated, the trail crosses other trails and it is easy to end up on another path.

Il secondo hike che consigliamo è il Scottsman Trail Loop (1 miglio, classificato da "Alltrails" al numero 6), il terzo è invece il Rocks and Vistas Garden Trail (numero 1 secondo "Alltrails), un percorso di 4 miglia che tocca anche parte del Siamese Twins Trail. Il penultimo sentiero che ci sentiamo di raccomandare è il semplice (0.5 km) Ridge Trail adatto a chi non vuole fare troppa fatica regalandosi panorami da cartolina.

The second hike we recommend is the Scottsman Trail Loop (1 mile, ranked by "Alltrails" as number 6), the third is the Rocks and Vistas Garden Trail (number 1 according to "Alltrails"), a 4 mile trail that also touches part of the Siamese Twins Trail. The penultimate trail that we feel to recommend is the easy (0.5 km) Ridge Trail, suitable for those who do not want to struggle giving themselves postcard views.

Al quinto posto abbiamo lasciato probabilmente il migliore, il Susan G Bretag Trail and Palmer Trail Loop, un trail di 2.5 miglia sicuramente meno trafficato dei precedenti ed adatto a chi è alla ricerca di un contatto più diretto con la natura. Questo percorso circolare di difficoltà moderata (classifica di "Alltrails". 4) è probabilmente il percorso meno semplice da seguire.

In fifth place there's probably the best trail of The Garden of The Gods, the Susan G Bretag Trail and Palmer Trail Loop (2,5 miles) which is certainly less busy than the previous ones and suitable for those looking for a more direct contact with nature. This loop trail (ranking as moderate, bumber 4 by AllTrails) is probably the least simple to follow.

BROADMOOR SEVEN FALLS, LE CASCATE DEI... 224 SCALINI
La Broadmoor Seven Falls sono, dopo ovviamente il Garden of the Gods, la seconda attrazione più pubblicizzata a Colorado Springs ed inserita addirittura tra le "International Falls" del National Geographic. Situata a meno di un miglio da The Broadmoor, la splendida tenuta della famiglia Broadmoor proprietaria anche delle cascate stesse, la Seven Falls si trova all'interno di un canyon in uno scenografico contesto naturale.

BROADMOOR SEVEN FALLS, THE WATERFALLS FAMOUS FOR THE... 224 STAIRS
The Broadmoor Seven Falls are, after the Garden of the Gods, the second most publicized attraction in Colorado Springs and even included among the "International Falls" of the National Geographic. Located less than a mile from The Broadmoor, the stunning estate of the Broadmoor family who also owns the falls themselves, the Seven Falls are located within a canyon in a scenic natural setting.

Alte più di 50 metri, questa serie di cascate sono famose per il fatto che è necessario salire ben 224 scalini per ammirarle dall'alto. I più pigri potranno tuttavia fermarsi sulla piattaforma panoramica Eagle's Nest alla quale si può accedere tramite ascensore. Ad essere sinceri, tra tutte le tantissime attrazioni che Colorado Springs e la Pikes Peak Region offre, è quella che meno ci ha colpito. Le cascate, soprattutto d'estate, non sono così scenografiche, senza contare che per accedervi occorre comprare un costoso biglietto d'ingresso.

Over 50 meters high, this series of waterfalls are famous for the fact that it is necessary to climb 224 steps to admire them from above. However, the laziest can stop on the Eagle's Nest viewing platform which can be accessed by lift. To be honest, of all the many attractions that Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region offer, that's the one that least affected us. The waterfalls, especially in summer, are not so scenic, not to mention that the admission ticket is pretty expensive.

COME VISITARE LE BROADMOOR SEVEN FALLS
La visita alle Broadmoor Seven Falls, che durante il periodo estivo sono aperte dalle 9 alle 20, avviene in modo del tutto particolare. Occorre, infatti, lasciare la propria auto in un parcheggio nella periferia di Colorado Springs (1045 Lower Gold Camp Rd), dove un bus gratuito vi porterà nel giro di una decina di minuti al sito delle cascate, attraversando una delle aree residenziali più belle della città. Una volta giunti in cima, potrete camminare un quarto d'ora buono sino alle cascate o usufruire del trenino (gratuito).

HOW TO VISIT THE BROADMOOR SEVEN FALLS
The visit to the Broadmoor Seven Falls, which during the summer period are open from 9 am to 8 pm, takes place in a very special way. You have, in fact, to leave your car in a parking lot in the outskirts of Colorado Springs (1045 Lower Gold Camp Rd), where a free bus will take you (ten minutes ride) to the site of the falls, crossing one of the most beautiful residential areas of the city. Once at the top, you can walk (15 minutes) to the waterfalls or take the small train.

Il nostro consiglio, visto il prezzo del biglietto non proprio economicissimo per quello che è lo spettacolo misero offerto delle cascate (14 dollari) è di sfruttare nel migliore dei modi il ticket ed avventurarsi nei tanti sentieri che partono proprio dalla cima delle cascate.

Our advice, given the admission ticket price (14 dollars) which is not cheap considering the fact that the falls are not impressive, is to make the best possible use of the ticket and venture into the many trail that start right at the top of the falls.

SCALARE LA PIKES PEAK COME I MIGLIORI PILOTI AUTOMOBILISTICI
Pikes peak America’s Mountain. Il nome potrebbe risultare sconosciuto ai più, ma non agli appassionati di motori. Così come la sua altitudine, quei famosi 4302 metri scolpiti nella mente dei migliori piloti automobilistici del mondo che ogni 4 di luglio si ritrovano per la seconda gara più antica degli Usa, dietro solamente alle 500 miglia di Indianapolis, la Pikes Peak International Hill Climbing, un'autentica scalata sino all'imponente cima della montagna. La stessa che ha dato il nome anche alla corsa all'oro di Pike's Peak, un periodo di ricerca febbrile di giacimenti auriferi ad alcuni chilometri a nord della montagna, compreso tra il luglio del 1858 e il febbraio del 1861, cui pare abbiano partecipato più di 100.000 cercatori. Ecco, Pikes Peak non è una montagna come le altre ed ogni giorno richiama centinaia di visitatori che percorrono i suoi tortuosi tornanti per raggiungere la cima ed ammirare l'intera regione da posizione privilegiata. CLIMB PIKES PEAK AS THE BEST RACE CAR DRIVER
Pikes peak America’s Mountain. The name may be unknown to most people, but not to motor enthusiasts. As well as its altitude, those famous 4302 meters carved in the minds of the world's best car drivers who come to Colorado Springs every 4th of july for the second oldest race in the US after the Indianapolis 500: its name is Pikes Peak International Hill Climbing, an authentic climb up to the imposing mountain top. This mountains also gave the name to the Pike's Peak gold rush, the boom in gold prospecting and mining in the Pike's Peak Country of western Kansas Territory and southwestern Nebraska Territory of the United States that began in July 1858 and lasted until roughly the creation of the Colorado Territory on February 28, 1861. An estimated 100,000 gold seekers took part in one of the greatest gold rushes in North American history. So, Pikes Peak is not a mountain like the others and every day attracts hundreds of visitors who travel its winding twists to reach the top and admire the entire region from a privileged position. COSA VEDERE A COLORADO SPRINGS TRA COWBOYS  E MINIERE...
Se tutto quello che vi abbiamo raccontato in merito a "cosa vedere a Colorado Springs" non vi è bastato, non preoccupatevi. Doveste avere un altro giorno a disposizione avrete sostanzialmente l'imbarazzo della scelta per quanto riguarda le numerose attività dedicate a grandi e piccoli. E proprio per chi viaggia con i bambini al seguito consigliamo l'imperdibile, è lo Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, rinomato parco di conservazione di montagna con oltre 700 animali e la più grande mandria di giraffe al mondo (4250 Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Rd, Colorado Springs).

WHAT TO SEE IN COLORADO SPRINGS AMONGCOWBOYS AND MINES ...
If all we told you about "what to see and do in Colorado Springs" was not enough, don't worry. If you have more time to spend in this beautiful area, you will be spoiled for choice: for those traveling with children, we recommend the unmissable Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, a renowned mountain conservation park with over 700 animals and the largest giraffe herd in the world (4250 Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Rd, Colorado Springs).

Finita qua? Macchè. Una gita lungo Cripple Creek sulla ferrovia a scartamento ridotto Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, una chicca per gli appassionati di storia e ferrovia, è un must soprattutto se non avete in programma di salire a bordo del Durango & Silverton Railroad. Per gli appassionati di ghost town e vecchio west ci sono invece sia il Ghost Town Museum (400 S 21st St, Colorado Springs), dove poter ammirare varie ambientazioni dell'Old West americano ed il Western Museum of Mining History, dedicato alla storia mineraria e alla tecnologia industriale degli Stati Uniti occidentali (225 N Gate Blvd, Colorado Springs).

That's it? No, of course not! A trip along the Cripple Creek on the narrow gauge railway called Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, a treat for history and railroad enthusiasts, is a must especially if you don't plan to board the Durango & Silverton Railroad. If you love ghost towns and the old west be sure to visit the Ghost Town Museum (400 S 21st St, Colorado Springs), where you can admire various settings of the American Old West and the Western Museum of Mining History, dedicated to mining history and to the industrial technology in the western United States (225 N Gate Blvd, Colorado Springs).

Colorado Springs è anche tuttavia "casa" dei cowboys e dei rodeo.  E' qui, infatti, che ha sede la Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame con l'annesso Museo del Cowboy Americano, progettato per "preservare l'eredità delle gare dei cowboy, il patrimonio e la cultura di quelle competizioni originali e i campioni del passato, presente e futuro" (101 Pro Rodeo Dr, Colorado Springs). Gli amanti della scienza non potranno poi non fare visita allo Space Foundation Discovery Center, un autentico gioiellino fatto di divertimento a tema spaziale e di apprendimento incentrato sulla scienza per grandi e piccoli (4425 Arrowswest Drive, Colorado Springs). L'ultimo, ma non per importanza, dei luoghi da non perdere quando si visita Colorado Springs e la Pike Peaks Region, è situato nella vicinissima Manitou Springs. Parliamo ovviamente del Manitou Cliff Dwellings, un autentico museo a cielo aperto dedicato al popolo Anasazi. Il Museo fu aperto al pubblico nel lontano 1907 e presenta esposizioni sulla vita dell'antico popolo Anasazi, tra cui reperti archeologici, strumenti, ceramiche e armi (10 Cliff Rd, Manitou Springs)

Colorado Springs is also home of cowboys and rodeos. Don't miss the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame with the attached Museum of the American Cowboy, designed to "preserve the legacy of the cowboy contests, the heritage and culture of those original competitions, and the champions of the past, present and future" (101 Pro Rodeo Dr, Colorado Springs). Science lovers will then want to visit the Space Foundation Discovery Center, an interactive, education-focused destination that advances science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics in the exciting context of space exploration, development and utilization(4425 Arrowswest Drive, Colorado Springs). The last, but not least, of the must-see places when visiting Colorado Springs and the Pike Peaks Region, is located in nearby Manitou Springs. The Hiking Trip - Arizona, Colorado and Utah (day 13: Colorado Springs - Estes Park. Paint Mines Interpretive Park, Red Rock Amphitheatre and Peak to Peak Scenic Byway)

No, non ci siamo dimenticati. Parlando dei luoghi da non perdere quando si visita Colorado Springs e la Pikes Peak Region, abbiamo volutamente tralasciato un altro luogo imperdibile, che noi abbiamo scelto di visitare nella giornata in cui abbiamo lasciato il sud dello stato, muovendoci in direzione Rocky Mountain National Park, nel profondo nord del Colorado: il Paint Mines Interpretive Park. Siamo a Calhan, una piccola comunità situata a circa 40 miglia ad est di Colorado Springs nella contea di El Paso, in un territorio completamente diverso rispetto a quello a cui eravamo stati abituati dal momento in cui abbiamo messo piede in Colorado.

No, we haven't forgotten. Speaking of the must-see places when visiting Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region, we have deliberately omitted another unmissable place, which we visited on the day we left the south of the state, moving towards the Rocky Mountain National Park, in the deep north of Colorado: the Paint Mines Interpretive Park. We are in Calhan, a small community located about 40 miles east of Colorado Springs in the County of El Paso, in a completely different territory compared to what we were used to in Colorado.

Le pianure dell'Eastern Plains hanno preso il posto delle montagne, così come il caldo semi-desertico è tornato prepotentemente ad essere per questo breve tratto fedele compagno di viaggio. I 750 acri del Paint Mines Interpretive Park sono uno dei parchi più belli dell'Eastern Plains, grazie alle sue formazioni geologiche, tra cui guglie, hoodoos e strati colorati di rocce bianche, gialle e viola.

The Eastern Plains have taken the place of the mountains, just as the semi-desert heat is back to being a loyal traveling companion for this short stretch. The 750 acres of the Paint Mines Interpretive Park are one of the most beautiful parks of the Eastern Plains, thanks to its geological formations, including pinnacles, hoodos and colored layers of rocks (white, yellow and purple).

COME VISITARE IL PAINTED MINES INTERPRETIVE PARK
Il Painted Mines Interpretive Park, abitato sin da 12.000 anni fa dai nativi americani che da queste collinette estraevano argilla, dispone di due entrate, una situata ad ovest e l'altra a sud. Per arrivarci dovrete percorrere una strada sterrata non impegnativa, la Paint Mines Road. A prescindere che decidiate di lasciare l'auto al Paint Mines Upper Parking Lot (sud) o al Paint Mines Interpretive Park Parking Lot (ovest), ad attendervi ci saranno 4 miglia di sentieri, segnaletiva interpretativa ed ovviamente tante possibilità di fotografare le splendide Painted Mines.

HOW TO VISIT THE PAINTED MINES INTERPRETIVE PARK
The Painted Mines Interpretive Park, since 12,000 years ago inhabited by Native Americans who were used to extract clay from these hills, has two entrances, one located to the west and the other to the south. To get there you will have to take a non-binding dirt road, the Paint Mines Road. Regardless of whether you decide to leave your car at the Paint Mines Upper Parking Lot (south) or at the Paint Mines Interpretive Park Parking Lot (west), there will be a 4 miles trail waiting for you, interpretive signs and of course plenty of opportunities to photograph the beautiful Painted Mines.

Il trail principale è una sorta di loop a forma di 8, lungo 3.5 miglia. Se si percorre solamente uno dei due cerchi che formano l’8, il loop diventa di 1.5 miglia (quello a nord) oppure di 2 miglia (quello a sud). La parte settentrionale e orientale del parco è prevalentemente ondulata e con poche formazioni rocciose, quasi tutte situate nel centro-sud.

The main trail is a sort of 8-shaped loop, which is 3.5 miles long. If you only hike one of the two circles that form the "8", the loop trails is 1.5 miles long (the north one) or 2 miles long (the south one). The northern and eastern part of the park is predominantly undulating and with few rock formations: most of them are located in the central-south area.

ANCORA NATURA CON IL ROXBOROUGH STATE PARK
La costeggeremo solamente, ma Denver, la più grande e importante città del Colorado, offre anche grazie ai suoi dintorni, tantissime attrattive. Una di queste, a sud ovest, è il Roxborough State Park, dal 1980 anche National Natural Landmark a causa del numero di sistemi ecologici e di formazioni geologiche. Il parco, soprannominato il "Garden of The Gods di Denver", è costituito da foreste di pini ponderosi e abeti Douglas, praterie e boschi che sostengono molte forme di fauna selvatica. Ci sono 145 uccelli, oltre 50 farfalle e falene e 11 specie di anfibi e rettili. I mammiferi comunemente trovati nel parco includono l'orso nero, il coyote, il cervo, l'alce, la volpe, il leone di montagna, il cane della prateria e il coniglio. Il Roxborough State Park offre ben cinque percorsi escursionistici, adatti a principianti ed esperti. Il più gettonato è sicuramente il semplice Willow Creek Trail (1.4 miglia - loop trail), mentre quello che garantisce un buon compromesso tra bellezze naturali e lunghezza del percorso è decisamente il Fountan Valley Trail (2.3 miglia - categoria: facile, loop trail), che permette di ammirare la parte migliore del Roxborough State Park. Gli altri trail del parco sono il South Rim Trail (3 miglia, difficoltà: media, loop trail) che offre una prospettiva più ampia sulle formazioni rocciose di Fountain Valley, l'Elk Valley Trail (4.8 miglia, difficoltà: moderata, roundtrip) ed il Carpenter Peak Trail (6.2 miglia, difficoltà: moderata, roundtrip).

STILL NATURE WITH THE ROXBOROUGH STATE PARK
Our route takes us past the turn off to the largest and most important city in Colorado, Denver. It also offers many attractions thanks to its surroundings: one of these, to the southwest, is the Roxborough State Park, since 1980 also National Natural Landmark due to the number of ecological systems and geological formations. The park, dubbed the "Denver's Garden of The Gods", is made up of forests of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, prairie land, and woodlands that support many forms of wildlife. There are 145 bird, over 50 butterfly and moth, and 11 amphibian and reptile species. Mammals commonly found in the park include black bear, coyote, deer, elk, fox, mountain lion, prairie dog, and rabbit. Roxborough State Park offers five hiking trails, suitable for beginners and experts. The most popular is certainly the easy Willow Creek Trail (1.4 miles - loop trail), while the Fountan Valley Trail (2.3 miles - easy, loop trail) is the one that guarantees a good compromise between natural beauties and the length of the route. It allows you to admire the best part of the Roxborough State Park. The other trails in the park are the South Rim Trail (3 miles, intermediate, loop trail) which offers a broader perspective on Fountain Valley rock formations, the Elk Valley Trail (4.8 miles, moderate, roundtrip) and the Carpenter Peak Trail (6.2 miles, moderate, roundtrip).

IL RED ROCK AMPHITHEATRE, UN GIOIELLINO ALLE PORTE DI DENVER
I Beatles, i Rolling Stones, gli U2 e molti altri. Sono gli artisti che si sono esibiti in quello che di gran lunga è il palcoscenico più scenografico al mondo, il Red Rock Amphitheatre. Siamo ancora alle porte di Denver, tra rocce di arenaria rossa ed un parco che nei giorni in cui non sono previsti concerti, è un autentico toccasana per gli abitanti di Denver e dei suoi dintorni che qui si rilassano facendo jogging e yoga.

THE RED ROCK AMPHITHEATRE, A JEWEL ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF DENVER
The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the U2 and many others. They are the artists who performed in what is by far the most spectacular stage in the world, the Red Rock Amphitheater. We are still on the outskirts of Denver, between red sandstone rocks and a park that is also a real panacea for the inhabitants of Denver and its surroundings who relax here doing jogging and yoga.

E' qui, incastonato tra le rocce rosse, che sorge il Red Rock Amphitheatre che, grazie alla sua acustica pressochè perfetta, da circa 100 anni ospita grandi eventi di musica dal vivo in un contesto unico nel suo genere, con i due grandi massi rossi che delimitano le gradinate di questo anfiteatro naturale.

It is here, nestled among the red rocks, that the Red Rock Amphitheater lies. Thanks to its almost perfect acoustics, it has hosted great live music events for about 100 years in a unique context, with the two large red boulders that delimit the steps of this natural amphitheater.

Per chi volesse immergersi nella natura del parco, consigliamo di percorrere il Trading Post Trail (1.4 miglia, loop trail), che conduce all'interno delle formazioni rocciose. Percorrerlo in senso orario consente di avere viste migliori.

For those wishing to immerse themselves in the nature, we recommend the Trading Post Trail (1.4 miles, loop trail), which leads into the rock formations. Hiking it clockwise gives you better views.

GOLDEN, TRA BUFFALO BILL E... LA FABBRICA DELLA COORS
La nostra risalita verso le Rocky Mountain ci porta a Golden, la città di Buffalo Bill. E' qui, infatti, che è sepolto il mitico personaggio del west americano, a cui è dedicato anche il Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave. Noi, tuttavia, ci siamo fermati a Golden perchè avremmo voluto visitare la fabbrica della Coors, una delle birre più amate e famose degli Stati Uniti. Nonostante la visita sia gratuita e venga messo a disposizione un bus che dal parcheggio conduce direttamente al visitor center, nessuno tuttavia ci ha informato che non è possibile portare alcunché all'interno della fabbrica. A malincuore, quindi, una volta giunti al visitor center, abbiamo dovuto desistere (Marco aveva con sé il marsupio...), perchè tornare al parcheggio, rifare la coda per il bus e tornare al centro visitatori ci sarebbe costata almeno un'ora buona. Nel caso in cui doveste visitarla, è disponibile un audioguida multilingue (non italiano) che descrive oltre al metodo di produzione anche la nascita e crescita di questa azienda tra le più innovative nel suo settore (i primi ad introdurre la lattina di alluminio). Il tour (offerto dalle 10 alle 16 tranne il martedì ed il mercoledì) dura un'ora ma ed al termine della visita viene offerta una degustazione di 3 birre. L'attesa, tuttavia, è sempre molto lunga e nel caso in cui non aveste molto tempo a disposizione, consigliamo una sosta direttamente al gift shop ed alla tasting area. Ma ricordatevi, niente borse, borselli etc.

GOLDEN, BETWEEN BUFFALO BILL AND ... THE COORS FACTORY
Our ascent towards the Rocky Mountains takes us to Golden, Buffalo Bill's town. The mythical character of the American west is, in fact, buried right here, at the Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave. However, we stopped at Golden because we wanted to visit the Coors factory, one of the most popular and famous beers in the United States. Although the visit is free and a free shuttle leads visitors from the parking lot to the visitor center, no one has informed us, however, that it is not possible to bring anything inside the factory. Reluctantly, then, once we got to the visitor center, we had to give up (Marco was carrying a pouch ...): it takes, in fact, at least one hour to get back to parking lot and then come back to the visitor center. If you're planning to visit it, a multilingual audioguide describes the production method and the birth and growth of this company among the most innovative. Tour are offered from 10am to 4pm except Tuesdays and Wednesdays and last an hour. You'll get 3 tastings (for free) ad the end of the tour. There's always a long time to wait and just in case you do not have much time, we recommend to go straight to the gift shop and to the tasting area. But remember, no bags, purses etc.

LE MERAVIGLIE DELLA PEAK TO PEAK SCENIC BYWAY
Non è famosa come la Million Dollar Scenic Byway o la Trail Ridge Road, ma il fascino della Peak to Peak Scenic Byway è innegabile. Con i suoi 100 km fatto di tornanti e montagne, collega Estes Peak, la gate town ad est del Rocky Mountain National Park con la Roosevelt National Forest. Designata nel 1918, la Peak to Peak Scenic Byway è la più antica Scenic Byway del Colorado, capace di snodarsi attraverso l'Arapaho National Forest (così chiamata dal presidente Roosevelt per la tribù di nativi che cacciava in questa area), l'Indian Peaks Wilderness Area e il Rocky Mountain National Park, ad un passo dai grandi centri abitati di Denver, Boulder e Fort Collins.

THE WONDERS OF THE PEAK TO PEAK SCENIC BYWAY
It's not as famous as the Million Dollar Scenic Byway or Trail Ridge Road, but the charm of Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is undeniable. With its 100 km of hairpin bends and mountains, it connects Estes Peak, the gate town east of the Rocky Mountain National Park, with the Roosevelt National Forest. Designated in 1918, the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is the oldest Scenic Byway in Colorado, capable of winding its way through the Arapaho National Forest (so named by President Roosevelt for the native tribe that hunted in this area), the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area and the Rocky Mountain National Park, a step away from the major population centers of Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins.

COSA VEDERE LUNGO LA PEAK TO PEAK, TRA NATURA E CITTA'
Cosa vedere lungo la Peak to Peak Scenic Byway? Natura e cittadine particolari vi accompagneranno lungo questi 100 km che rappresentano un bellissimo aperitivo in vista delle giornate successive all'interno del Rocky Mountain National Park. La prima città che attraverserete è quella di Black Hawk, che nel 1859 fu luogo in cui John Gregory trovò l'oro. Il suo passato di frontiera lo si nota ancora ed è possibile visitare ancora oggi le miniere che la resero grande. Oppure visitare la vicina Apex, che invece non ha saputo resistere dopo la corsa all'oro ed è tuttora una città fantasma. Per chi ama la natura, consigliamo il Golden Gate Canyon State Park  che offre oltre 12.000 ettari di foresta, prati e cime rocciose  per le avventure all'aria aperta. Il parco offre sentieri escursionistici e ciclabili per ogni livello, possibilità pesca e aree pic-nic. Proseguendo verso nord lungo la CO-119, attraverserete 18 miglia di foresta sino a raggiungere Rollinsville prima e Nederland poi. Se foste in cerca di una città in cui valga la pena fermarsi per un caffè, questa è proprio Nederland, un tempo città minerario che serviva come base d'appoggio per la vicina Caribou, ora divenuta Ghost Town.

THINGS TO SEE ALONG THE PEAK TO PEAK, BETWEEN NATURE AND TINY TOWNS
What can you see along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway? Nature and tiny towns will accompany you along these 100 km that represent a beautiful first approach to the mountains before the following days inside the Rocky Mountain National Park. The first town you'll notice is Black Hawk, which in 1859 was the place where John Gregory found gold. Its frontier past is still visible and it is still possible to visit the mines that made the town great. Or visit the nearby Apex, which instead could not resist after the gold rush and is now a ghost town. For nature lovers, we recommend the Golden Gate Canyon State Park which offers over 12,000 hectares of forest, meadows and rocky peaks for outdoor adventures. The park offers hiking and cycling trails for every level, fishing opportunities and picnic areas. Continuing north along the CO-119, you will cross 18 miles of forest until you reach Rollinsville  and then Nederland. If you were looking for a town where it's worth stopping for a coffee, this is Nederland, once a mining town that served as a base for the nearby Caribou, which has now become a Ghost Town.

UN GIRO SUL CAROSELLO DELLA FELICITA' DI NEDERLAND
La grande attrazione della città è il Carousel of Happiness, il carosello della felicità, autentico simbolo della città. La sua è una storia che parte da lontano, dal 1910, quando il carosello fu costruito. Ma è dal 1986 che il veterano del Vietnam Scott Harrison le ha dato quel tocco di magia finale che l'ha reso il luogo più amato della Peak To Peak Byway.

A RIDE ON THE CAROUSEL OF HAPPINESS IN NEDERLAND'S 
The big attraction of the city is the Carousel of Happiness, a true symbol of the entire city. Its story begins from afar, dating back 1910, when the carousel was built. But in 1986, Vietnam veteran Scott Harrison gave it that touch of magic that made it the most loved place on the Peak To Peak Byway.

I 56 animali che compongono la giostra, infatti, sono tutti intagliati a mano, un lavoro durato ben 26 anni. La sua ispirazione? Un carillon che ha portato con sé in Vietnam, il quale lo ha aiutato a distrarsi ed a rimanere calmo durante la guerra. Nel 2010 il carosello ha aperto al pubblico.

The 56 animals that make up the carousel, in fact, are all hand-carved, a job that lasted 26 years. His inspiration? A music box he brought with him to Vietnam, which helped him get distracted and remain calm during the war. In 2010 the carousel opened to the public.

Proprio accanto al Carousel of Happiness sorge la Train Cars Coffee & Yogurt Company, tre vagoni di un treno che ora ospitano clienti provenienti da tutto il mondo. La leggenda narra che uno di questi vagoni fosse parte integrante di un circo che era in tour addirittura con il Wild West Show di Buffalo Bill!

Right next to the Carousel of Happiness you'll see the Train Cars Coffee & Yogurt Company, three train cars that now host customers from all over the world. Legend has it that one of these wagons was an integral part of a circus that was on tour with the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show!

L'ultima grande attrazione della Peak to Peak Scenic Byway è situata alle porte di Allenspark. Parliamo della Chapel on The Rock, una cappella cattolica funzionante che accolse anche Papa Giovanni Paolo II durante i giochi della gioventù nel 1993.

The last major attraction of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is located just outside Allenspark. Let's talk about the Chapel on the Rock, a functioning Catholic chapel that also welcomed Pope John Paul II during the youth games in 1993.

DA NON PERDERE A ESTES PARK, LA GATE TOWN DEL ROCKY MOUNTAIN NP
Estes Park è una delle gate town più affascinanti del nostro viaggio, fatto di almeno una decina di parchi nazioni e conseguenti cittadine fungono da porta d'ingresso per il parco stesso. il suo piccolissimo riverwalk, ma soprattutto il suo carinissimo downtown fatto di negozi e ristoranti la rendono perfetta per una passeggiata dopo le grandi fatiche all'interno del Rocky Mountain National Park.

UNMISSABLE PLACES IN ESTES PARK,  ROCKY MOUNTAIN'S GATE TOWN
Estes Park is one of the most fascinating gate towns of our trip, made up of at least a dozen national parks and then gate towns. Its tiny riverwalk, but above all its lovely downtown made up of shops and restaurants make it perfect for a walk after a tiring day at the Rocky Mountain National Park.

Ma ci sono due luoghi che ci sentiamo di consigliare particolarmente: il primo è l'Elkins Distilling Co, un paio di miglia ad est di downtown, la prima ed unica distilleria di Estes Park. Potrete visitare la distilleria o semplicemente gustare un whisky (o un cocktail, tutti buonissimi) con una vista paradisiaca alle vostre spalle.

But there are two places that we particularly like to recommend: the first one is the Elkins Distilling Co, located a couple of miles east of downtown, the first and only Estes Park distillery. You can visit the distillery or simply enjoy a whisky (or a cocktail) with a heavenly view behind you.

Quando si parla di dove cenare ad Estes Park, invece, il nostro consiglio è di spingervi questa volta un paio di miglia ad ovest di downtown: se siete in cerca di un buonissimo barbeque il posto che fa per voi è lo Smokin Dave's BBQ, dal buonissimo rapporto qualità-prezzo. L'unica incognita può essere l'attesa...
