We had not yet visited Hawaii in the winter, It took us all of five minutes to realize that the 50th American state is always beautiful, in summer as in winter, in spring as in autumn. How beautiful is the whole Kona Coast and in particular the southern slope, which represents the highlight of day 2 in the largest of the Hawaiian islands. It's also finally time for a bath in the ocean, because a very large part of the Kona Coast has some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Hawaii. Which one to choose? Well, you will honestly be spoiled for choice ...

KONA COAST - LE BELLEZZE DELLA KEALAKEKUA BAY
La Kealakekua Bay è semplicemente il primo punto delle isole raggiunto da una spedizione europea, e, di fatto, una delle aree più storiche delle Hawaii. Ma è anche una delle zone più impervie dell'isola, meta turistica molto rilevante per gli amanti dello snorkeling, delle immersioni subacquee e del kayak. Il primo arrivo documentato su questa baia risale al gennaio 1779 con la nave 'Risoluzione e Scoperta' guidata dal capitano James Cook, che venne accolto non proprio benissimo dagli hawaiiani sia la prima volta che, un mese dopo, quando ritornò con il suo equipaggio. Ne uscì un violento scontro nella quale il capitano perse la vita. E' possibile oggi visitare un monumento che illustra la storia con dei disegni intitolato 'la morte di Cook' e raggiungibile con un'escursione di circa un ora o in barca.
KONA COAST - THE BEAUTIES OF KEALAKEKUA BAY
Kealakekua Bay is simply the first point of the islands reached by a European expedition, and, in fact, one of the most historic areas of Hawaii. But it is also one of the most inaccessible areas of the island, a very important tourist destination for people who love snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking. The first documented arrival on this bay dates back to January 1779 with the ship 'Resolution and Discovery' led by Captain James Cook, which was not very well welcomed by the Hawaiians. both the first time and, a month later, when he returned with his crew. A violent clash came out in which the captain lost his life. It is possible today to visit a monument that illustrates that time with drawings entitled 'the death of Cook': it's reachable with an excursion of about an hour or by boat.

ALLA SCOPERTA DELLA BIG ISLAND BEES, IL REGNO DEL MIELE
Arrivando da Kona, spendete la mattinata percorrendo il loop lungo la "160" che poi si collegherà nuovamente con la strada principale, la "11", ovvero la Hawaii Belt Road, un viaggio di qualche ora che vi porterà a scoprire le grandi bellezze della baia, a partire dalla Big Island Bees, la più grande azienda produttrice di miele delle Hawaii. L'azienda produce ben quattro tipi di miele: il più famoso è sicuramente il Miele chiaro di Lehua, uno dei più rari al mondo, che si trova solo alle Hawaii e viene prodotto in tarda primavera-inizio estate.
DISCOVERING THE BIG ISLAND BEES, THE KINGDOM OF HONEY
If you're coming from Kailua-Kona, don't forget to spend the morning driving the loop along the "160" which will then join the main road, the "11", or the Hawaii Belt Road. It's a few hours trip that will make you discover the great beauties of the bay, starting with the Big Island Bees, Hawaii's largest honey company. The Big Island Bees produces different types of honey: the most famous is certainly the Lehua light honey, one of the rarest in the world, which is found only in Hawaii and is produced in late spring-early summer.
Chi ama le mitiche noci macadamia, non potrà non assaggiare il Macadamia Nut Blosson Honey, un miele scuro prodotto in inverno e ad inizio primavera. Completano il pacchetto dei mieli prodotti il Wilelaiki ed il miele di Lehua e Cannella. L'azienda offre inoltre anche tour giornalieri della durata di un'ora circa al costo di 10 dollari che si concluderà con il tasting dei vari mieli.
Those who love the legendary macadamia nuts will certainly taste the Macadamia Nut Blosson Honey, a dark honey produced in winter and early spring. Wilelaiki and Lehua and Cinnamon honey complete the package of honey. The company also offers daily tours lasting about an hour (admission price: 10 dollars) which ends with the tasting of the different honeys.
La Napo'opo'o road, una strada tutta curve, che vi ha condotto alla Big Island Bees e poi ancora la Puuhonua Road, la quale costeggia per diversi chilometri il mare, valgono da solo il prezzo del biglietto. Una deviazione che non vi deluderà e che culminerà proprio con in parco che dà il nome alla strada, Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park. Già, perchè bellezze naturali e storia qui a Big Island si alternano senza soluzione di continuità.
The Napo'opo'o road, a curvy road, which led you to the Big Island Bees and then to the Puuhonua Road that runs along the sea, is worth the trip alone: a detour that will not disappoint you: it ends right in the park that gives the name to the road, the Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park. Yes, because natural beauty and history here on Big Island alternate unabated.
Questo è l'ennesimo parco sacro per gli Hawaiani, perchè niente è più forte del "Kapu", le leggi fondate sullo spirito, l'amministrazione dell'ambiente e l'ordine sociale. La violazione di tali regole prevedeva pene severissime, tuttavia la giustizia prevedeva anche...misericordia. Esisteva, infatti, su ogni isola hawaiana, un rifugio, il Puuhonua, dove chi aveva infranto le leggi veniva "ripulito" nell'anima dai sacerdoti. Sempre che fosse riuscito a raggiungerlo prima dei suoi inseguitori...
This is yet another sacred park for Hawaiians, because nothing is stronger than the "Kapu", the laws based on the spirit, the management of the environment and the social order. There was, in fact, on every Hawaiian island, a refuge, the Puuhonua, where those who had broken the laws were "cleaned up" in the soul by the priests. Once released, nobody could hurt him any more. If you are even a little curious about the history of Hawaii and its people, you will love this park. The 1 km trail will take you to all all the sacred places of the park starting from the temple (rebuilt in 1650) which housed the remains of 23 tribal chiefs.

There are still three stops that we recommend before coming back to Kona and finally get to beaches. The first is one of the most fascinating churches in all of Hawaii, almost hidden in the heart of the bay: the Painted Church (84-5140 Painted Church Rd, Captain Cook). It is a small miniature cathedral, built between 1899 and 1904 by a Belgian priest, Father John Berchmans Velghe: it still calls the faithful every second Sunday of the month for the Hawaiian mass which ends with a community breakfast.
La vista, dalla chiesa, è onestamente splendida. The view from the church is honestly amazing. Then there is one of the most beautiful fruit stand of the whole island, the South Kona Fruit Stand (opening hours: Monday to Saturday until 6 pm, Sunday until 4 pm) located along the Hawaii Belt Road (the exact address is the following: Near the old Higashi Store, between mile marker 103 & 104).

LE SPIAGGE DI BIG ISLAND, QUALE SCEGLIERE?
Sappiamo benissimo che uno dei temi più caldi quando si parla di Hawaii è sempre... il mare. Quale spiaggia è la migliore di Big Island? Il mare è bello? Tutte domande che sicuramente vi starete facendo, alle quali proveremo a rispondere proponendovi alcune delle spiagge più belle dell'intera isola. Fermo restando sempre il fatto che, come abbiamo più volte detto, non è per il mare che si viene alle Hawaii. Se non volete spostarvi troppo dalla città, la soluzione più semplice è la Magic Sands beach (Ali'i Drive, by Kona Magic Sands Resort; at La'aloa Bay, Kailua-Kona).
BIG ISLAND'S BEACHES, WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE?
We know very well that one of the hottest topics when it comes to Hawaii is always ... beaches and the ocean. Which is the best beach on Big Island? Is the sea beautiful? All questions that you will surely be asking yourself. We will try to answer by proposing you some of the most beautiful beaches of the whole island. Taken it for granted the fact that, as we have said many times, you should come to Hawaii non for the beaches and the ocean... If you don't want to move too far from Kailua-Kona, the easiest solution is the Magic Sands beach (address: Ali'i Drive, by Kona Magic Sands Resort; at La'aloa Bay, Kailua-Kona).
Nel raggio di 20 miglia troverete le migliori spiagge dell'isola, una più bella dell'altra. La nostra preferita? Sicuramente Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay). Acqua trasparente, sabbia bianchissima e colori paradisiaci (indirizzo: Hwy. 19, Paved Road With Sign, Near Marker 88, opposite the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, Kailua-Kona). Come per tutte le spiagge della Kona Coast, il tramonto qui ha un sapore magico. Un'altra spiaggia molto interessante, soprattutto se viaggiate con bambini al seguito, è Hapuna Beach con l'annessa Waialea Beach. Una lunga lingua di sabbia bianca di quasi un chilometro, compresa tra alcuni affioramenti di lava nera. In un anno riceve solo 25 centimetri di pioggia ed il sole è garantito praticamente sempre, ma la folta vegetazione offre anche un discreto riparo.
Within 20 miles you'lss easily see the best beaches on the island, one's prettier than another.. Our favorite? It's Definitely the Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay). Crystal clear water, white sand and heavenly colors (address: Hwy. 19, Paved Road With Sign, Near Marker 88, opposite the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, Kailua-Kona). As with all Kona Coast beaches, the sunset here has a magical flavor. Another very interesting beach, especially if you are traveling with children, is Hapuna Beach with the attached Waialea Beach. A 1 km long strip of white sand, between some black lava outcrops. It gets only 25 centimeters of rain in a year: it's just always sunny over there, but the thick vegetation also offers a pretty decent shelter.
Le ultime due spiagge che vogliamo raccomandarvi sono la Kaunaʻoa Beach, anche conosciuta come Mauna Kea Beach perché si affaccia sul Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. E' una delle più belle dell'isola, tuttavia, durante i mesi invernali, le onde sono normalmente più alte (indirizzo: 62-100 Mauna Kea Beach Dr, Waimea). L'altra è Makalawena/Pu'u Ali'i che abbiamo volutamente lasciato per ultima. Non perchè sia meno bella, ma perchè è la meno semplice da raggiungere. Occorre, infatti, almeno un'ora di cammino per raggiungere questa spiaggia selvaggia, che facilmente vi permetterà di ammirare foche e tartarughe marine.
The last two beaches we want to recommend are Kaunaʻoa Beach, also known as Mauna Kea Beach because it overlooks the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. It is one of the most beautiful on the island, however, during the winter months, the waves are normally stronger (address: 62-100 Mauna Kea Beach Dr, Waimea). The other one is Makalawena / Pu'u Ali'i which we've left it for the end but that does not mean its any less beautiful. It's just the least easy to get to. In fact, it takes at least an hour's walk to reach this wild beach, which will easily allow you to admire seals and sea turtles.
