Ad Egillstadir abbiamo toccato il punto più a est del nostro viaggio in Islanda, ora è tempo di risalire la china e completare il loop della "ring road" dirigendoci verso nord, ovvero l'area che fa capo a due grandi poli attrattivi, la splendida regione geotermica del Myvatn e la carinissima città di Akureiry. Ecco, noi per questioni di tempo abbiamo dedicato due giorni a questa parte dell'Islanda, ma chi vorrà spingersi a nord (e nord-ovest) visitando le aree più remote del paese avrà davvero di che sbizzarrirsi. L'importante è non perdersi, nel tratto davvero monotono e privo di ogni traccia di civiltà che collega Egillstadir a Myvatn, la deviazione verso le cascate che tra tutte, ci hanno colpito di più, le Dettifoss...
While in Egillstadir we touched the easternmost point of our trip to Iceland, now it's time to get back on top and complete the loop of the "ring road" heading north, that is the area that belongs to two great attractive poles, the splendid geothermal region of Myvatn and the cute city of Akureiry. Here, for time issues, we decided to spend two days visiting this part of Iceland, but those who want to go north (and north-west) visiting the most remote areas of the country will really be spoilt for choice . The important thing is not to miss while driving the really monotonous stretch (devoid of any trace of civilization) that connects Egillstadir to Myvatn, the detour to the waterfalls that, among all, struck us the most: the Dettifoss ...
DETTIFOSS, SELFOSS E ASBYRGI CANYON, UNA MERAVIGLIA DOPO L'ALTRA
Se il prezzo da pagare per ammirare l'incredibile spettacolo delle Dettifoss sono le due ore spese lungo la "1" in mezzo al nulla, con solo qualche fattoria a fare ogni tanto capolino all'orizzonte, beh... lo paghiamo volentieri. Per chi arriva da sud (Egillstadir) e sta attraversando l'Islanda su di un suv (la strada è percorribile anche da semplici berline, ma dovrete prestare un po' di attenzione), consigliamo di seguire la 864, una strada sterrata (molto sconnessa) che è di fatto uno dei due modi per raggiungere la cascata.
DETTIFOSS, SELFOSS AND ASBYRGI CANYON, ONE WONDER AFTER THE OTHER
If the price we have pay to admire the incredible show made by the Dettifoss waterfall is the two hours spent along the "1" in the middle of nowhere, with only a few farms peeking over the horizon from time to time, well ... we are happy to pay that price. For those arriving from the south (Egillstadir) and crossing Iceland on an SUV (the road can also be traveled by simple sedans, but you will have to be careful), we recommend following the 864, a dirt road (very bumpy ) which is in fact one of the two ways to reach the waterfall.
L'alternativa, decisamente più comoda, è quella di seguire la "862", una strada a sua volta asfaltata che conduce a comodi view point lungo la strada, dai quali ammirare Dettifoss e Sellfoss. Ovviamente, avrete la possibilità anche di percorrerle entrambe (una all'andata, una al ritorno), garantendovi la possibilità di godervi le cascate da angolazioni diverse.
The alternative way, which is much more comfortable, is to follow the "862", a paved road that leads to comfortable view points along the road (west side), from which you can admire Dettifoss and Sellfoss. Obviously, there's also the opportunity to visit both sides (the road could be a loop), ensuring the chance to enjoy the falls from different angles.
IL LATO EST - COME VISITARE DETTIFOSS, SELFOSS E HAFRAGILSFOSS
Noi abbiamo scelto di seguire la sterrata "862", una strada che costeggia il canyon e conduce, dopo oltre mezz'ora, al parcheggio delle Dettifoss, ovvero le seconde cascate più potenti d'Europa con i suoi 193 metri cubici d’acqua al secondo. Intuirete subito il perché le Dettifoss, ovvero cascata dell'Acqua che Rovina, porti quel nome: la sua potenza e l'acqua fangosa che potrete ammirare da pochissimi metri (se state seguendo la strada sterrata) mentre si getta nella gola del canyon, sono un qualcosa di davvero impressionante.
THE EAST SIDE - HOW TO VISIT DETTIFOSS, SELFOSS AND HAFRAGILSFOSS
We have chosen to follow the dirt road "862" that runs along the canyon and leads, after more than half an hour, to the Dettifoss car park: They are the second powerful waterfalls in Europe having an average water flow of 193 m³/s.. Its power and the muddy water that you can admire from a close distance (if you are following the dirt road) while it flows into the canyon gorge, are something really impressive.
Pensate che la potenza dell'acqua è tale da sollevare spruzzi che si vedono a 1 km di distanza e nelle giornate di sole generano stupendi arcobaleni, come quelli che abbiamo potuto vedere noi sia da vicino, sia percorrendo il trail che conduce alle vicine Sellfoss.
Just think that the power of the water is such that it can raise splashes that can be seen 1 km away and on sunny days they also generate beautiful rainbows, like those we have been able to see both up close and along the trail that leads to the nearby Sellfoss.
Una volta giunti al parcheggio, una brevissima passeggiata di circa 400 metri conduce al primo view point sulle Dettifoss e poi direttamente al salto delle cascate. Da qui, a differenza del lato ovest, puoi davvero apprezzare la potenza della cascata.
Once you reach the parking lot, there's a very short walk of about 400 meters that leads to the first view point on the Dettifoss and then directly to the waterfall jump. From here, unlike the west side, you can really appreciate the power of the waterfall.
Uno spettacolo davvero impressionante. E non è finita qui, perchè seguendo il sentiero lungo 1 km potrete raggiungere la seconda ed altrettanto affascinante cascata, le Sellfoss. Il sentiero è decisamente più accidentato del precedente, ma nulla di preoccupante. Dovrete in avvio di trail scavalcare qualche piccolo masso prima che il sentiero spiani, ma come amiamo ripetere parlando dell'Islanda, perdersi è davvero impossibile. Anche perchè, in questo caso vi basterà seguire l'andamento del fiume.
A truly impressive sight. And that's not all, because following the 1 km long path visitors can reach the second and equally fascinating waterfall, the Sellfoss. The trail is pretty rough particularly in the first part, but nothing to worry about. At the start of the trail you will have to climb over some small bouldersbefore the path flattens out, but as we like to repeat when talking about Iceland, getting lost is really impossible. Also because, in this case, you just need to follow the flow of the river.
Le Sellfoss, se vogliamo, sono scenograficamente anche più belle. Una serie di cascate lunga qualche centinaio di metri, fangose, che appaiono come per magia davanti a voi.
The Sellfosse, if you like, are scenically even more beautiful. A series of muddy waterfalls a few hundred meters long, which appear as if by magic in front of you.
Ora avrete due scelte, tornare dalla strada da dove siete venuti, oppure continuare il loop. Ciò vi obbligherà ad allungare i tempi ma vi permetterà di raggiungere altre mete che meriterebbero una visita. In primis la terza cascata prodotta da questo imponente canyon, che troverete poco dopo aver lasciato il parcheggio delle Dettifoss. E' una deviazione sulla sinistra che conduce su un piccolo promontorio, dal quale potrete ammirare le piccole Hafragilsfoss. Dal parcheggio potrete accontentarvi della vista da lontano sulle cascate (come abbiamo fatto noi) o seguire per pochi minuti il sentiero fino ad un punto panoramico sul canyon Jökulsárgljúfur.
You now have two options, either go back the way you came from, or continue and complete the loop. This will force you to extend the time but allows to reach other destinations that worth a visit. First of all, the third waterfall produced by this imposing canyon, which is located shortly after leaving the Dettifoss car park. It is a detour on the left that leads to a small promontory, from which you can admire the small Hafragilsfoss. Falls can be seen from the parking lot, but there's also a very short trail that leadt to a beautiful view point over the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon.

Al termine della sterrata (sono altri 30 km dal parcheggio delle Dettifoss), sarete arrivati al parco nazionale Gljúfrastofa - Ásbyrgi. Se vi siete spinti fin qui, allora è doveroso spendere un po' di tempo esplorando il parco probabilmente meno visitato del paese, complice la sua collocazione non proprio comodissima. Il visitor center è bellissimo e ricco di informazioni: qui potrete chiedere ai ranger quale sentiero meglio si addice ai vostri bisogni (e tempo a disposizione). Lasciato il visitor center, percorrerete la strada asfaltata "861" che conduce nel cuore del canyon Asbyrgi, il quale si estende per 3,5 km (che poi è anche la lunghezza della strada che scorre al suo interno) da nord a sud e raggiunge un’ampiezza media di 1 km.
At the end of the dirt road (another 30 km from the Dettifoss parking lot), visitors could stop at the Gljúfrastofa - Ásbyrgi national park. If you have gone this far, then you should spend some time exploring the probably least visited park in the country, thanks to its not very convenient location. The visitor center is beautiful and full of information: here you can ask the rangers which trail best suits your needs (and your time). Leaving the visitor center, you'll have to travel along the paved road "861" which leads into the heart of the Asbyrgi canyon, which is 3.5 km long from north to south and reaches an average width of 1 km.
Una volta giunti al parcheggio al termine della strada, potrete scegliere tra i numerosissimi sentieri che offre il canyon. Il più famoso (e semplice) è il loop di 1 km denominato Botnstjörn pond, un percorso che si snoda tra gli alberi e conduce al famoso stagno circondato dalle mura del canyon. Questo è un trail che può anche essere allungato, portando il percorso a circa 4 km. I più avventurosi potranno invece arrampicarsi fino alla cima dell’Eyjan partendo dal campeggio (4,5 km andata e ritorno) o scalare le rupi del Tófugjá. Da qui, un percorso ad anello gira intorno ad Áshöfði proseguendo oltre la gola. Il percorso verso Myvatn invece si completa percorrendo la "862" che vi porterà prima al versante ovest delle cascate Dettifoss e poi a raggiungere il grande lago Myvatn.
Once you get to the parking lot at the end of the road, you can choose to hike one of the many trails (short and long) that the canyon offers. The most famous (and simplest) is the 1 km loop called Botnstjörn pond, a path that winds through the trees and leads to the famous pond surrounded by the canyon walls. This is a trail that can also be extended, and the route becomes approximately 4km. The more adventurous, on the other hand, can climb up to the top of the Eyjan starting from the campsite (4.5 km round trip) or climb the cliffs of Tófugjá. From here, a circular route goes around Áshöfði continuing beyond the gorge. The route to Myvatn, on the other hand, is completed by taking the "862" which will take you first to the west side of the Dettifoss falls and then to the great Myvatn lake.

L'AREA GEOTERMALE DI MYVATN, I COLORI PIU' BELLI D'ISLANDA
La scenografia cambia clamorosamente una volta raggiunta l'area geotermale del Myvatn. Colori e odori sono completamente diversi e... impiegherete un millionesimo di secondo a rendervi conto che siete capitati in quello che è il luogo al mondo più vicino come somiglianza al Parco Nazionale di Yellowstone, negli Stati Uniti. Anzi, per certi versi, se doveste chiudere per un attimo gli occhi, vi sembrerà davvero di essere lì.
MYVATN GEOTHERMAL AREA, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COLORS OF ICELAND
The scenography changes dramatically once you reach the geothermal area of Myvatn. Colors and smells are completely different and ... it just takes a second to realize that you are visiting what is the closest place in the world in resemblance to Yellowstone National Park, in the United States. Indeed, in some ways, if you close your eyes for a moment, you might really feel like you are there.
Noi abbiamo scelto di dedicare anche la mattinata successiva alla visita dei dintorni di Myvatn, per questo durante la seconda parte della giornata odierna ci siamo focalizzati solamente su Hverir, venendo immediatamente rapiti dai colori più belli d'Islanda. Hverir altro non è che un paesaggio lunare di pozze di fango ribollenti, di depositi sulfurei e fumarole, con i colori che spaziano dall'ocra al rosso.
We have also chosen to dedicate the next morning to visiting the surroundings of Myvatn. This means that during the second part of this day, we just visit Hverir, being immediately abducted by the most beautiful colors of Iceland. Hverir is nothing more than a lunar landscape of bubbling mud pools, sulfur deposits and fumaroles, with colors ranging from ocher to red.
Un pittore non avrebbe davvero saputo fare di meglio. Ecco, l'odore è proprio quello che vi accompagna anche a Yellowstone, quello dello zolfo che aleggia lungo l'intera area di Hverir.
A painter could not really have done better. Here, the smell is just what accompanies you also in Yellowstone, that of the sulfur that hovers along the entire area of Hverir.
I passaggi attraverso i punti più interessanti e le varie pozze sono delimitati da funi, quindi per evitare rischi di incidenti gravi e danni all'ambiente naturale, il consiglio è quello di evitare di camminare sul suolo di colore più chiaro.
The passages through the most interesting points and the various pools are delimited by ropes: in order to avoid the risk of serious accidents and damage to the natural environment, the advice is not to walk walking on the lighter colored ground.
Dal parcheggio parte un sentiero molto bello, il Námafjall via Hverir - Námaskarð, che non solo conduce alle varie pozze, ma anche sulla cresta di Námafjall: da qui potrete ammirare Hverir dall'alto e la vista sarà ancora più imponente. Considerate almeno 30 minuti per completare il loop.
A very beautiful trail starts directly from the parking lot. It is called the Námafjall via Hverir - Námaskarð, which leads to the various pools, but also to the Námafjall ridge: from here you can admire Hverir from above and the view is just even more impressive. Allow at least 30 minutes to complete the loop.
Approfittando della vicinanza con il nostro hotel (bastava, di fatto, attraversare la strada), abbiamo scelto Skútustaðagígar come luogo per avvicinarsi al lago Myvatn. La verità è che avrete diverse possibilità per farlo, ma percorrere questo sentiero lungo poco più di 1 km ci ha permesso in comodità di ammirarlo dall'alto, con la possibilità inoltre di scattare diverse fotografie interessanti.
Taking advantage of the proximity to our hotel (it was enough, in fact, just to cross the road), we chose Skútustaðagígar as a place to approach Lake Myvatn. The truth is that visitors have several possibilities to do it, but walking this path just over 1 km long allowed us to admire it from above, with the possibility of taking several interesting photographs.
Myvatn letteralmente significa lago dei moscerini, che effettivamente in estate ne infestano le sponde anche se noi, in quella particolare sezione del lago, non ne abbiamo trovati. Per certi versi, restando sempre in tema Stati Uniti, questo lago ricorda un pochino Mono Lake, in California. Il motivo? Sulle sue sponde troverete formazioni laviche create dalle colate incandescenti a contatto con l'acqua fredda, che in alcune zone hanno formato strutture alte anche decine di metri, dette "castelli neri" per il colore della roccia lavica.
Myvatn literally means lake of midges, which actually infest its shores in the summer even if we haven't found any in that particular section of the lake. In some ways, still on the subject of the Usa, this lake is a little reminiscent of Mono Lake, in California. The reason? On its banks you will find lava formations created by incandescent flows in contact with cold water, which in some areas have formed structures as high as tens of meters, called "black castles" due to the color of the lava rock.

The hotel, which is very nice (breakfast is great!), is the only landmark in the area, west of Lake Myvatn. For those who do not want to move, it also offers a decent restaurant which is also the only one in the area. Average prices and quality.
