DUE CUORI PER VIAGGIARE: Exploring Iceland - The "route 1" trip: DAY 9 - Myvatn - Akureyri (80 km). Highlights: Myvatn Geothermal Area, Godafoss and Akureyri

La tappa più corta del nostro viaggio in Islanda, solamente 80 km, è l'occasione perfetta per rallentare i sin qui forsennati ritmi che le innumerevoli bellezze ci hanno obbligato a tenere per i primi 8 giorni. Nonostante la pioggia che ha condizionato buona parte della mattinata, con tutta calma ci siamo goduti tutta la parte restante dei dintorni di Myvatn e le cascate Godafoss. regalandoci poi un tranquillo pomeriggio nella carinissima Akureyri, una di quelle cittadine dove, se non fosse per il freddo, varrebbe davvero la pena vivere...

The shortest stage of our trip to Iceland (only 80 km), is the perfect opportunity to slow down the frenetic pace that the countless beauties have forced us to keep for the first 8 days. Despite the rain that affected most of the morning, we calmly enjoyed the remaining part of the surroundings of Myvatn and the Godafoss waterfalls, giving us a quiet afternoon in the cute Akureyri, one of those towns where, if it weren't for the cold, it would really be worth living...

KRAFLA, LEIRHNJUKUR, GRJOTAGJA E DIMMUBORGIR: MYVATN AL SUO MEGLIO...

La mattinata dedicata alle bellezze dei dintorni di Myvatn e del suo lago, ci porta in avvio a superare, in direzione sud, Hverir (di cui abbiamo parlato nel post precedente) e deviare immediatamente dopo verso sinistra. La strada sale e conduce a due luoghi tra i più visitati dell'area, Krafla e Leirhnjukur, situati sostanzialmente uno accanto all'altro. L'attrazione principale è il vulcano Krafla, il cui cratere è diventato con gli anni un bellissimo lago alpino dal colore azzurro. Il percorso lungo il cratere è lungo circa 1.5 km, dal quale ammirare la caldera profonda 2 km e capace di eruttare per ben 29 volte in passato.

KRAFLA, LEIRHNJUKUR, GRJOTAGJA AND DIMMUBORGIR: MYVATN AT ITS BEST...

The morning dedicated to the beauties of the surroundings of Myvatn and its lake, leads us to pass Hverir (which we mentioned in the previous post) in a southerly direction and turn immediately to the left. The road goes up and leads to two of the most visited places in the area, Krafla and Leirhnjukur, located basically next to each other. The main attraction is the volcano Krafla, whose crater has become over the years a beautiful blue alpine lake. The path along the crater is about 1.5 km long, from which you can admire the caldera which is 2 km deep and able to erupt 29 times in the past.

Poco distante, sulla destra, sarà impossibile non notare un ampio parcheggio. E' da qui che prende il via il trail che se percorso interamente è lungo 4 km (loop trail) e che conduce a Leirhnjukur. La prima parte del percorso, interamente pianeggiante, segue una passerella sino alla piccola caldera del cratere Leirhnjukur ed agli altri piccoli laghetti.

Not far away, on the right, visitors will certainly notice notice a large parking lot. The trail starts right here: it is a 4 km loop trail that leads to Leirhnjukur. The first part of the trail, entirely flat, follows a footbridge up to the small caldera of the crater Leirhnjukur and other small lakes.

Qui i colori sono davvero splendidi: si passa dal nero della lava al giallo, dall'ocra all'azzurro, un contrasto davvero stupendo. Superato il piccolo cratere il sentiero prosegue all'interno dei campi di lava, per poi fare ritorno al parcheggio passando nuovamente dall'area del cratere.

Here the colors are really beautiful: from the black of the lava to the yellow, from the ocher to the blue, a really wonderful contrast. Once you get to the small crater, the path continues inside the lava fields and then return to the parking lot crossing again the crater area.

Più a nord, invece, proprio a ridosso delle sponde del lago Myvatn (versante sud), seguiamo la "860" sino all'area di parcheggio di Grjotagja, una grotta famosa perchè qui vi è stata girato parte del quinto episodio della terza stagione della serie televisiva "Il trono di spade". Grjotagja altro non è che una stranissima grotta lavica le cui acque sono azzurrissime. La storia racconta che già all'inizio del XVIII secolo il fuorilegge Jón Markusson visse nei dintorni e utilizzò la grotta per farsi il bagno. Fino al 1970 Grjótagjá rimase un luogo di balneazione popolare, tuttavia durante le diverse eruzioni occorse tra il 1975 e il 1984 la temperatura dell'acqua salì oltre 50 °C impedendone l'immersione. Negli anni successivi la temperatura è andata diminuendo, anche se non abbastanza per immergersi agevolmente.

Further north, however, just behind the shores of Lake Myvatn (south side), we follow the "860" until we reach the Grjotagja parking lot, a cave which is famous because here was filmed part of the fifth episode of the third season of the television series "Game of Thrones". Grjotagja is nothing but a strange lava cave whose waters are very blue. The story goes that already at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the outlaw Jón Markusson used to live nearby and used the cave to take a bath. Grjótagjá remained a popular bathing place til 1970, however during the different eruptions occurred between 1975 and 1984 the temperature of the water have been rising over 50° C, preventing the immersion. In the following years the temperature went decreasing, even if not enough to dive in it easily.

Situato non lontano da Grjotagja, l'ultimo importante stop dell'area geotermica del Myvatn, è Dimmuborgir, ovvero la "fortezza oscura". Le sue formazioni laviche, infatti, ricordano vagamente dei castelli neri e possono essere ammirate seguendo i diversi sentieri ampiamente segnalati. Sul luogo è presente anche un visitor center ed una caffetteria.

Located not far from Grjotagja, the last important stop along the geothermal area of Myvatn, is Dimmuborgir, or the "dark fortress". Its lava formations, in fact, are vaguely reminiscent of black castles and can be admired by following the various marked trails. There is also a visitor center and a cafeteria.

Tra Myvatn ed Akrureyri, distanti circa 80 km l'uno dall'altra, la grande attrazione lungo la strada sono sicuramente le Godafoss, le cascate degli Dei, figlie del fiume Skjálfandafljót le cui acque cadono per circa 12 metri regalando il solito impatto scenografico di incredibile qualità, ormai un classico quando si parla dell'Islanda e delle sue cascate. Perchè "cascate degli Dei"? Bisogna tornare all'anno 1000, quando Lögsögumaður Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði fece del Cristianesimo la religione ufficiale dell'Islanda. Dopo tale conversione si dice che, mentre tornava dall'Alþingi, Þorgeirr gettò le sue statue degli dèi nordici nella cascata. Come visitare le Godafoss? Potrete parcheggiare al bellissimo negozio di souvenir e raggiungere a piedi con una passeggiata un po' più lunga uno dei due versanti (destra o sinistra), dal quale ammirare le cascate. Oppure parcheggiare molto più vicino, nell'ampio parcheggio, che si affaccia direttamente sulle Godafoss.

Between Myvatn and Akrureyri, about 80 km away, the main attraction along the road are definitely the Godafoss, the waterfalls of the Gods, daughters of the river Skjálfandafljót whose waters fall for about 12 meters giving the usual scenic impact, a classic when it comes to Iceland and its waterfalls. Why "waterfalls of the Gods"? We must go back to the year 1000, when Lögsögumaður Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. After this conversion, it is said that while returning from Alþingi, Þorgeirr threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall. How to visit Godafoss? You can park at the beautiful souvenir store and walk a little longer to one of the two sides (right or left), from which you can admire the falls. Or park much closer, in the large parking lot, which directly overlooks the Godafoss.

AKUREYRI, IL GIOIELLINO SUL FIORDO

Chiamata "Città del sole di mezzanotte" o anche "Capitale dell'Islanda del Nord", Akureyri è il segreto forse meglio conservato di tutta l'Islanda. Posizionata sul Eyjafjörður, il fiordo più lungo dell'Islanda centro-settentrionale, (il che la rende meta privilegiata di tante navi da crociera...) è spesso considerata solamente una tappa di passaggio da chi percorre la "1". Eppure in questa piccola cittadina e nei suoi dintorni, varrebbe davvero la pena spendere qualche giorno (o viverci, se non facesse freddo...) per godersi quell'atmosfera islandese che non sempre Reykjavik sa regalare.

AKUREYRI, THE JEWEL ON THE FJORD

Called the "City of the Midnight Sun" or even the "Capital of North Iceland," Akureyri is perhaps the best kept secret in all of Iceland. Located on the Eyjafjörður, the longest fjord in north-central Iceland, (which makes it a favorite destination for many cruise ships...) it is often considered only a stopover by those who travel the "road 1". Yet in this small town and in its surroundings, it would really be worth spending a few days (or living there, if it weren't cold...) to enjoy the Icelandic atmosphere that Reykjavik does not always offer.

Siamo a soli 100 km dal circolo polare artico, nella seconda area urbana del paese, dove parecchi dei suoi circa 18 mila abitanti sono coinvolti nella pesca, principale attività della città. Se, come noi, voleste spendere una buona mezza giornata esplorando questo piccolo ma affascinante paese, cosa c'è vedere ad Akureyri? Sono tre le grandi attrattive, partendo dal centro storico che coinvolge Akureyrarkirkja, la chiesa di Akureyri (dove avrete lasciato la vostra auto) e la via pedonale Hafnarstræti.

We are only 100 km far from the Arctic Circle, in the second urban area of the country, where several of its approximately 18 thousand inhabitants are involved in fishing, the main activity of the city. If, like us, you would like to spend a good half day exploring this small but fascinating city, what to see and do in Akureyri? There are three major attractions, starting from the historical downtown that involves Akureyrarkirkja, the church of Akureyri (where we suggest to leave your car) and the pedestrian street called Hafnarstræti.

Nulla di paragonabile con la Laugavegur di Reykjavik sia in termini di lunghezza che di quantità di negozi e locali, ma comunque caratteristica. Partendo dal cuore, posizionato all'inizio della via, dove è possibile scattare la più bella delle foto cartolina. Ah, il cuore. E' uno dei simboli di Akureyri tanto che anche diversi semafori... ne possiedono uno!

It's nothing that competes with Laugavegur in Reykjavik, both in terms of length and quantity of stores and restaurants, but it's still characteristic. Starting from the "heart", located at the beginning of the street, where you can take the most beautiful postcard photos. Well... the heart. It is one of the symbols of Akureyri, so much so that even several traffic lights... have one!

La terza e grande attrazione di Akureyri è il giardino botanico Lystigardurinn (ingresso gratuito, solo in estate), piccolo ma molto carino. Al suo interno troverete anche un bar-ristorante, l'apprezzatissimo Cafè Bjork. Lystigardurinn è il giardino botanico più settentrionale del mondo ed è stato istituito nel 1957 all'interno di quello che a tutti gli effetti è un parco cittadino creato da donne del posto nel lontano 1912. Qui crescono oltre 400 specie autoctone, grazie anche al microclima favorevole del fiordo più lungo d'Islanda, quello dove è situata la bellissima Akureyri.

The third and big main attraction of Akureyri is the Lystigardurinn botanical garden (admission is free, but it's open only in summer), small but very nice. There's also a bar-restaurant, the very popular Café Bjork. Lystigardurinn is the northernmost botanical garden in the world and was established in 1957 within what is effectively a city park created by local women back in 1912. Here, more than 400 native species grow, thanks also to the favorable microclimate of the longest fjord of Iceland, the one where the beautiful Akureyri is situated.

RISTORANTE: Múlaberg Bistro & Bar (fascia prezzo: media. Voto 9/10)

Se l'Hotel, distante dalla città (ma ne eravamo a conoscenza) e poco accogliente non ci ha colpito, l'happy hour al Múlaberg Bistro & Bar ci ha entusiasmato. Arrivati troppo tardi per avere un tavolo al ristorante (il locale era tutto prenotato), ci siamo accomodati al bar con la gente del posto, vivendo una serata "da islandesi". I piatti che abbiamo ordinato (dal menù del ristorante) erano tutti davvero eccezionali, così come le birre ed i cocktail.

CITY: Akureyri

HOTEL: Hotel Kjarnalundur (price range: medium-high. Rating: 6/10)

RESTAURANT: Múlaberg Bistro & Bar (price range: medium. Rating 9/10)

We weren't impressed by the hotel, which was very far from the city (but we were aware of that!), and unwelcoming. But the discussion about Múlaberg Bistro & Bar is different: their happy hour was amazing. We arrived too late and we couldn't get a table at the restaurant (it was fully booked), so we sat at the bar with the locals, experiencing an evening "as Icelanders". The dishes we ordered (from the restaurant menu) were all really great, as were the beers and cocktails.
