The best of Phoenix and Tucson: 10 days exploring the "land of cactus" (Day 7 Sierra Vista - Tucson 200 km: Coronado National Monument, Tubac and much more)

Con il confine con il Messico sempre più vicino, è tempo di risalire e di raggiungere l'ultima città del road trip nel profondo sud dell'Arizona, ovvero Tucson. E' la giornata più fredda del viaggio, con temperature che non solo hanno condizionato ampiamente la tappa, ma che ci hanno impedito di ammirare nel migliore dei modi quello che a livello storico-culturale sarebbe stato il grande highlight, ovvero il Coronado National Monument. Ma, come sempre quando si parla di Stati Uniti, c'è sempre qualcosa per cui val la pena alzarsi di buonora e percorrere i chilometri che separano Sierra Vista da Tucson. Tra chiese particolarissime... con vista sul Messico, a cittadine pittoresche, passando per un parco statale che racconta la storia interessantissima del luogo, fatta di nativi americani, coloni spagnoli e tanto altro...

With the Mexican border getting closer and closer, it's time to go up and reach the last city of the road trip in the deep south of Arizona, Tucson. This has been the coldest day of the trip, with temperatures that not only affected the trip, but also prevented us from admiring in the best way what would have been the great historical and cultural highlight, the Coronado National Monument. But, as always when it comes to the United States, there is always something worth getting up early and driving the miles that separate Sierra Vista from Tucson. Between very particular churches... with a view of Mexico, to picturesque towns, passing through a state park that tells the interesting history of the place, made of Native Americans, Spanish settlers and much more ...

AL CORONADO NATIONAL MEMORIAL VINCE... LA NEBBIA

Sierra Vista dista poco più di 20 km dal Messico ma, in questa area dell'Arizona è sicuramente la città principale. E, proprio a sud della città, c'è una chiesa del tutto particolare, la Our Lady Of The Sierras (Cerro De La Virgen), che dall'altro della sua posizione privilegiatissima consente una bellissima vista su tutta la San Pedro Valley e, in lontananza, anche sul Messico. 

THE FOG... WINS AT CORONADO NATIONAL MEMORIAL

Sierra Vista is little more than 20 km from Mexico but, in this is definitely the main town of this part of Arizona. And, just south of the city, there is a very special church, Our Lady Of The Sierras (Cerro De La Virgen), which from its privileged position allows a beautiful view of the entire San Pedro Valley and, in the distance, even of Mexico.

Questo santuario, fortemente voluto da una famiglia di Chicago ed ispirato a quello situato sul monte Kriezevic a Medugorje,  è costituito dalla Croce (alta circa 75 piedi), da una statua raffigurante la Madonna, una cappella e diverse stazioni della via Crucis (indirizzo: 10310 S Twin Oaks Rd, Hereford). 

This shrine, strongly desired by a Chicago family and inspired by the one located on Mount Kriezevic in Medugorje, consists of the Cross (about 75 feet high), a statue depicting Our Lady, a chapel and several Stations of the Cross (address: 10310 S Twin Oaks Rd, Hereford).

Ma la verità è che noi ci stiamo dirigendo verso sud perchè vogliamo visitare il Coronado National Memorial, un parco che nelle intenzioni iniziali avrebbe dovuto simboleggiare il legame che unisce Stati Uniti e Messico e nel frattempo ricordare la prima spedizione organizzata nel sudovest degli Usa dal conquistatore Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. Creato nel 1941, infatti, il Coronado National Memorial avrebbe dovuto vivere in simbiosi con il parco che il Messico avrebbe dovuto creare al di là del confine, proprio come avviene nel profondo nord, con Usa e Canada che si spartiscono Waterton-Glacier National Park, condiviso tra i due stati. In realtà dall'altra parte del confine il parco non fu mai creato e, ancora oggi, quel che traspare è che di simbiosi ce ne sia davvero ben poca, con la costruzione del muro anche in questa zona che fino a poco tempo fa non aveva confini artificiali. Purtroppo, il meteo (in particolare la nebbia), non ci ha aiutato particolarmente nella visita di questo isolatissimo monumento nazionale, tanto isolato che...eravamo gli unici presenti!

But the truth is that we are heading south because we want to visit the Coronado National Memorial, a park that in the initial intentions should have symbolized the bond between the United States and Mexico and in the meantime also remember the first expedition organized in the southwest of the U.S. by the conqueror Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. The Coronado National Memorial was created on August 18, 1941, with the hope that a comparable adjoining area would be established in Mexico. The arrangement might have been similar to the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park between the United States and Canada. However, the Mexican memorial was never create and, even today, what transpires is that there is very little symbiosis between the two States, also thanks to the wall that has been built even in this part of Arizona that until recently had no artificial boundaries. Unfortunately, the weather (especially the fog), did not help us particularly in the visit of this isolated national monument, so isolated that ... we were the only ones there!

COSA VEDERE AL CORONADO NATIONAL MEMORIAL

Qualcuno di voi avrà riconosciuto il Coronado National Memorial in quanto punto di partenza statunitense dell'Arizona National Scenic Trail, il sentiero panoramico che collega il Messico allo Utah e che attraversa l'intera Arizona nel corso delle sue 800 miglia di percorso. Ma il parco è questo e molto altro, partendo dalla strada sterrata (Montezuma Canyon Road) molto scenografica che conduce al Montezuma Pass (2000 metri) e passando per le Coronado Cave, il cui trail di 1 miglio è uno dei più belli del parco. Chiamate anche Treasure Vault di Montezuma e Geronimo's Cave, la leggenda vuole che furono usate dagli Apache come nascondiglio per scappare dall'esercito degli Stati Uniti, mentre ora sono uno dei must quando si visita il parco. Ma ricordatevi di portare con voi almeno una torcia per persona.

WHAT TO SEE AT CORONADO NATIONAL MEMORIAL

Some of you may have recognized the Coronado National Memorial as the U.S. starting point of the Arizona National Scenic Trail, the scenic trail that connects Mexico to Utah and crosses the entire Arizona during its 800-mile route. But the park is this and much more, starting with the very scenic dirt road (Montezuma Canyon Road) that leads to Montezuma Pass (6575 feet) and passing through Coronado Cave, whose 1-mile trail is one of the most beautiful in the park. Also called Montezuma's Treasure Vault and Geronimo's Cave, legend has it that they were used by the Apaches as a hiding place to escape from the U.S. Army: now they are one of the must-sees when visiting the park. But remember to take with you at least one flashlight.

Una volta in cima al Montezuma Pass, potrete invece scegliete tra due trail.

1) Coronado Peak Trail

LUNGHEZZA: 1,3 km andata e ritorno

DISLIVELLO:  90 m

Questo percorso interpretativo sale dal trailhead al Montezuma Pass fino al Coronado Peak. Il percorso vi regalerà ampie vedute sul deserto di Sonora, sul Messico, sul fiume San Pedro e delle valli di San Rafael, mentre scoprirete qualcosa in più sulla spedizione Coronado e sui popoli nativi che abitavano questa zona

2) Yaqui Ridge Trail

Questo trail era il nostro grande obiettivo di giornata. Il percorso che ci avrebbe permesso di raggiungere il confine con il Messico, qui simboleggiato dal International Boundary Marker 102, situato proprio alla conclusione del percorso. Il realtà il trail è un proseguimento del Coronado Peak Trail, che nella seconda parte del percorso diventa Joe's Canyon Trail per poi diventare infine Yaqui Ridge Trail, per un totale di 6.4 km tra andata e ritorno.

LUNGHEZZA: 6.4 km tra andata e ritorno 

DISLIVELLO: 180 metri

Once at the top of Montezuma Pass, you can choose to hike those two trails.

1) Coronado Peak Trail

LENGTH: 1,3 km round trip

ELEVATION GAIN: 90 m

This interpretive trail climbs from the trailhead at Montezuma Pass up to Coronado Peak. The trail gives visitors sweeping views of the Sonora Desert, Mexico, the San Pedro River and San Rafael Valleys, while learning more about the Coronado Expedition and the native peoples who inhabited this area.

2) Yaqui Ridge Trail

This trail was our big goal for the day. The trail that would allow us to reach the border with Mexico, symbolized here by the International Boundary Marker 102, located right at the end of the trail. The trail is actually a continuation of the Coronado Peak Trail, which in the second part of the route becomes Joe's Canyon Trail and then finally becomes Yaqui Ridge Trail, for a total of 6.4 km round trip.

ELEVATION GAIN: 180 meters

SONOITA, PATAGONIA E NOGALES: IL SAPORE MESSICANO IN ARIZONA

Tornati a Sierra Vista, seguiamo la "82" che ci porterà ad attraversare un'altra area vinicola molto importante ed alcune piccole cittadine che meritano sicuramente una breve sosta. Tra tutte Sonoita con le sue aziende vinicole tra cui ricordiamo le più famose, ovvero Arizona Hops Vines, Rune Wines, Wilhelm Family Vineyards e Dos Cabezas WineWorks e soprattutto Patagonia. Con meno di duemila residenti, la cittadina è ricca di fascino e sapori locali, dove è normale andare indietro nel tempo e tornare ai tempo dei minatori e della corsa all'oro. L'ultima città lungo la "82" è la più famosa (e più grande), ovvero Nogales, per metà sul suolo americano e per metà su quello messicano, Qui potrete vivere l'atmosfera della frontiera dei giorni nostri, tra pendolari e quel ritmo frenetico tipico del confine tra Messico e Usa. 

SONOITA, PATAGONIA AND NOGALES: A MEXICAN FLAVOR IN ARIZONA

Back in Sierra Vista, we follow the "82" that will take us through another very important wine area and some small towns that definitely deserve a short stop. For example Sonoita with its wineries like Arizona Hops Vines, Rune Wines, Wilhelm Family Vineyards and Dos Cabezas WineWorks and above all Patagonia. With less than two thousand residents, the town is full of charm and local flavors, where it's normal to go back in time to the days of the miners and the gold rush. The last town along the "82" is the most famous (and biggest), Nogales, half on American soil and half on Mexican soil, Here you can experience the atmosphere of the modern day border, between commuters and that frenetic pace typical of the border between Mexico and the U.S..

TUBAC, DOVE IL CONNUBIO TRA STORIA ED ARTE E' DAVVERO VINCENTE

Ora si che è davvero tempo di risalire verso Tucson e percorrere la Interstate 19, la strada che collega proprio Tucson con Nogales. Noi l'avevamo già percorsa nel 2014 ed avevamo fatto visita al bellissimo Tumacacori National Historical Park (http://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.com/2015/09/the-old-wild-southwest-summer-2015-day.html), questa volta abbiamo scelto di dedicare molto più tempo alla bellissima Tubac, fermandoci anche in un negozietto del tutto particolare, il Santa Cruz Chili & Spice Company. Qui troverete il meglio dei prodotti della cucina del sud-ovest (e del Messico), vaste selezioni di salse, spezie ed erbe aromatiche...ma soprattutto il chili. Già, perchè loro sono davvero i maestri di questa specialità culinaria tipica del Messico. 

TUBAC, WHERE THE COMBINATION OF HISTORY AND ART IS REALLY WINNING

Now it's really time to go up towards Tucson and drive along Interstate 19, the road that connects Tucson with Nogales. We had already traveled it in 2014 and visited the beautiful Tumacacori National Historical Park (http://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.com/2015/09/the-old-wild-southwest-summer-2015-day.html), this time we chose to spend much more time in the beautiful Tubac, stopping also in a very special little store, the Santa Cruz Chili & Spice Company. Here you will find the best of Southwestern (and Mexican) cuisine, vast selections of sauces, spices and herbs...but above all, chili. Yes, because they really are the masters of this typical Mexican culinary specialty.

Tubac è storicamente un crocevia per più culture, tra cui nativi americani, spagnoli, messicani e pionieri americani. Incastonata tra le catene montuose di Tumacacori e Santa Rita, la cittadina è una piccola comunità conosciuta come il perfetto luogo d'incontro tra arte e storia. Fondata nel 1752 come Presidio spagnolo, Tubac da allora si è trasformata nella principale destinazione dell'Arizona meridionale per cultura, storia e arte. La sua downtown, ricca di negozi d'arte e ristoranti, è una delle più belle dell'intera Arizona. 

Tubac has historically been a crossroads for multiple cultures, including Native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans and American pioneers. Nestled between the Tumacacori and Santa Rita mountain ranges, the town is a small community known as the perfect meeting place for art and history. Founded in 1752 as a Spanish Presidio, Tubac has since transformed into Southern Arizona's premier destination for culture, history and art. Its downtown, filled with art stores and restaurants, is one of the most beautiful in all of Arizona.

Il fiore all'occhiello è però il Tubac Presidio State Park, la sede del più antico presidio spagnolo in Arizona. Il Presidio conserva le rovine del Presidio San Ignacio de Tubac e vari altri edifici, presentando così una cronologia dell'insediamento umano in questa città del sud dell'Arizona. Il parco contiene un museo, una serie di siti storici e molto altro. Vari eventi culturali si svolgono in loco durante tutto l'anno, tra cui Anza Days (ottobre), presentazioni di storia vivente di Los Tubaqueños (domenica da ottobre a marzo), tour archeologici e passeggiate nella natura. 

The highlight, however, is the Tubac Presidio State Park, the site of the oldest Spanish presidio in Arizona. The Presidio preserves the ruins of the Presidio San Ignacio de Tubac and various other buildings, thereby presenting a chronology of human settlement in this southern Arizona town. The park contains a museum, a series of historic sites and much more. Various cultural events take place on site throughout the year, including Anza Days (October), Los Tubaqueños living history presentations (Sundays, from October through March), archaeological tours, and nature walks.

COSA VEDERE NEL TUBAC PRESIDIO STATE PARK

Il Tubac Presidio Museum ospita reperti interpretativi con molti manufatti originali tra cui le prime raccolte archeologiche ed etnografiche legate ai nativi americani, alle colonie ed alle missioni spagnole, alle miniere,  ai ranch, alla guerra civile e molto altro. E poi ancora The 1885 Territorial Schoolhouse, ovvero la seconda più antica scuola in Arizona e la Otero Hall, costruita nel 1914 come centro comunitario e utilizzato come aula scolastica negli anni '30. L'edificio ospita una collezione di dipinti che rivelano alcuni degli eventi più interessanti della storia dell'Arizona. Infine c'è la The Rojas House, una casa a schiera in adobe della metà del 20 ° secolo con gli arredi originali appartenenti a Luisa Rojas, storica residente di Tubac. 

WHAT TO SEE IN TUBAC PRESIDIO STATE PARK

The Tubac Presidio Museum houses interpretive exhibits with many original artifacts including early archaeological and ethnographic collections related to Native Americans, the Spanish colonies and missions, mining, ranching, the Civil War and more. Then there is The 1885 Territorial Schoolhouse, which is the second oldest school in Arizona, and Otero Hall, built in 1914 as a community center and used as a classroom in the 1930s. The building houses a collection of paintings that reveal some of the most interesting events in Arizona history. Finally there is The Rojas House, a mid-20th century adobe townhouse with original furnishings belonging to Luisa Rojas, a historic Tubac resident.

The best of Phoenix and Tucson: 10 days exploring the "land of cactus" (Day 8 - Tucson: Saguaro National Park East Section and Trail Dust Town)

L'ultima parte del nostro viaggio alla scoperta degli angoli più segreti del sud dell'Arizona ci porta a Tucson, nella seconda città in ordine di importanza del "The Grand Canyon State". Tucson è completamente diversa da Phoenix, meno giovanile e molto più latina, dove si respira un'atmosfera molto più "messicaneggiante" se così vogliamo definirla. Parliamo infatti di una città fondata come forte militare dagli spagnoli e, qualche decennio dopo aver ottenuto l'indipendenza dalla Spagna, acquistata dagli Stati Uniti che la ottennero dal Messico come parte dell'acquisto di Gadsden. Questa è una terra di mariachi e di ottimo cibo messicano, di rodei, storia e tanta tantissima natura. Non a caso, è meta sicuramente più ambita dai turisti americani e non solo della vicina Phoenix. Noi, nei tre giorni a spasso per Tucson, città che avevamo già visitato durante l'on the road del 2015, abbiamo scelto di esplorare nella prima giornata l'area ad est della città, nella seconda quella ad ovest e nell'ultima quella centrale. Ed è proprio da est che iniziamo (dove abbiamo anche soggiornato), da un piccolo parco divertimenti a tema western...

The last part of our journey to discover the most secret corners of southern Arizona takes us to Tucson, the second most important city in "The Grand Canyon State". Tucson is completely different from Phoenix, less youthful and much more Latin, where visitors can breathe a much more "Mexican atmosphere", one way of putting it. In fact, we are talking about a city founded as a military fort by the Spaniards and, a few decades after gaining independence from Spain, purchased by the United States who obtained it from Mexico as part of the Gadsden Purchase. This is a land of mariachi and great Mexican food, rodeos, history and lots and lots of nature. It's no coincidence that it's a more popular destination for American tourists than nearby Phoenix. During the three days we spent in Tucson, a city we had already visited during our 2015 road trip to souhwest, we chose to explore the area east of the city on the first day, the area west of the city on the second and the central area on the last. And it is from the east that we start, from a small western-themed amusement park...

TRAIL DUST TOWN, CATALINA STATE PARK E SHOPPING

LA PRIMA MATTINATA A TUCSON

Parliamo, infatti, del Trail Dust Town (6541 E. Tanque Verde Rd), un parco a tema adatto soprattutto ai più piccoli, nel quale è stato ricreata una tipica ambientazione western, fatta di attrazioni attrazioni e spettacoli: durante la giornata potreste imbattervi in uno show di stuntmen, salire su diverse giostre, visitare una casa stregata e salire a bordo di un treno che attraversa scenografie del far west oltre ovviamente al visitare anche un museo di storia militare cha spazia fra il 18° e il 21° secolo. Potrete infine andare alla ricerca dell’oro o farvi scattare qualche foto dal sapore old west, o semplicemente guastarsi qualche piatto tipico in uno dei numerosi ristoranti.

THE FIRST MORNING IN TUCSON

Let's talk, in fact, about Trail Dust Town (6541 E. Tanque Verde Rd), a theme park suitable especially for children. It's basically a recreation of a typical western setting, made of attractions and shows: during the day you could run into a show of stuntmen, get on different rides, visit a haunted house and get on board a train that goes through sets of the far west as well as of course visit a museum of military history that spans from the 18th to the 21st century. You can also search for gold or take some pictures of the old west, or simply enjoy some typical dishes in one of the many restaurants.

Il percorso odierno prevede in realtà la visita sia dell'est, che del nord della città. Ma a dire il vero, abbiamo inutilmente percorso le 19 miglia che separano il Trail Dust Town dal Catalina State Park, nel profondo nord di Tucson. Nel piano originario avremmo dovuto spendere buona parte della mattinata esplorando i tanti sentieri del parco, ma un flash flood avvenuto nel giorno precedente e che ha allagato l'unica strada che attraversa il parco, ha costretto, infatti, i ranger del parco a chiudere l'intera area. Avendolo però preparato in lungo ed in largo, ci sentiamo comunque di consigliarvi qualche trail, nel caso vi stesse chiedendo cosa vedere al Catalina State Park (ingresso: 7 dollari a vettura), ai piedi delle Catalina Mountains. 

Today's route actually involves a visit of both the east and north of the city. But we actually unnecessarily drove the 19 miles that separate the Trail Dust Town and the Catalina State Park, deep in the north of Tucson. In the original plan we were supposed to spend a good part of the morning exploring the many trails in the park, but a flash flood that has occurred the previous day, flooded the only road that runs through the park, forced, in fact, the park rangers to close the entire area. However, having prepared the visit to the Catalina State Park far and wide, we would like to suggest some trails, in case you were wondering what to see at Catalina State Park (entrance: $7 per car), at the foothills of the Catalina Mountains.

1) Romero Ruins Interpretive Trail

Il Romero Ruins Interpretive Trail è un percorso ad anello che comincia a sud della strada principale ed attraversa un corso d'acqua stagionale. Dovrete salire gli 80 gradini per arrivare in cima alla collina: qui troverete anche le Romero Ruins, i resti di un villaggio di Hohokam risalenti al 500 d.C. Durata: 30 minuti, lunghezza 0.75 miglia in loop

2) Nature trail

Un altro sentiero facile da seguire. Dovrete lasciare la vostra vettura al parcheggio del trailhead e percorrere il trail di 1 miglio in loop, durante i quali potrete ammirare la tipica vegetazione del deserto di Sonora. 

3) Birding Trail

Questo semplice percorso permette di ammirare la macchia del deserto, le mesquite e molto altro, in particolare la grande relazione che c'è tra gli uccelli e questo habitat. Lunghezza: 1 miglio

4) Canyon loop trail

L'ultimo percorso che segnaliamo è il semplice Canyon Loop Trail, una sorta di escursione che unisce il Romero Canyon Trail al Sutherland Trail. Il trail, relativamente pianeggiante, conta però di 90 gradini situati circa a metà sentiero. Seguendo il Canyon Loop Trail, potrete poi continuare verso altri trail come il Nature Loop, il Birding Loop, il Sutherland Trail ed il Romero Pools Trail che condividono alcuni dei tratti di questo loop. Lunghezza: 2.3 miglia in loop

In questa area, a nord della città, sono situati anche i migliori outlet e centri commerciali della città di Tucson. Per questo dunque, abbinare la natura del Catalina State Park allo shopping potrebbe essere un buon consiglio in vista del vostro viaggio a Tucson. Le tre icone da non mancare sono il Foothils Mall (7401 N La Cholla Blvd) con i suoi oltre 90 negozi, il Tucson Premium Outlet (6401 W Marana Center Blvd) ed il Tucson Mall (4500 N Oracle Rd)

IL SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK - L'ATTRAZIONE NUMERO UNO DI TUCSON

Non c'è viaggio a Tucson che si rispetti che non preveda una visita al Saguaro National Park, il regno dei cactus Saguaro, suddivisi in due distinte aree del parco, la west section e la east section. Oggi ci concentriamo sul versante est, che prende il via all'interno del Deserto di Sonora per poi proseguire nella splendida foresta di conifere delle Rincon Mountains, la cui cima più elevata è la Mica Mountain (2641 metri) e che è stata la vista principale durante il sentiero che abbiamo percorso, il Mica Valley Loop Trail. 

1) Romero Ruins Interpretive Trail

It's a loop trail that begins south of the main road and crosses a seasonal waterway. You'll have to climb the 80 steps to get to the top of the hill: here you'll also find the Romero Ruins, the remains of a Hohokam village dating back to 500 AD. Duration: 30 minutes, length 0.75 miles. Loop trail.

2) Nature trail

Another easy trail to follow. You'll need to leave your car at the trailhead parking lot and hike the 1-mile loop trail, where you can see the typical Sonora's desert vegetation. 

3) Birding Trail

This easy trail allows you to see desert scrub, mesquite and more, especially the great relationship between birds and this habitat. Length: 1 mile.

4) Canyon loop trail

The last trail we point out is the easy Canyon Loop Trail, a sort of hike that joins the Romero Canyon Trail to the Sutherland Trail. The relatively flat trail, however, has 90 steps located about halfway up the trail. Following the Canyon Loop Trail, you can then continue on to other trails such as the Nature Loop, Birding Loop, Sutherland Trail and Romero Pools Trail that share some of the same sections of this loop. Length: 2.3 miles loop

This area, north of the city, is also home to the best outlet stores and shopping centers in the city of Tucson. Therefore, combining the nature of Catalina State Park with shopping might be a good suggestion for your trip to Tucson. The three must-see icons are the Foothils Mall (7401 N La Cholla Blvd) with its more than 90 stores, the Tucson Premium Outlet (6401 W Marana Center Blvd) and the Tucson Mall (4500 N Oracle Rd).

SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK - TUCSON'S NUMBER ONE ATTRACTION

There is no trip to Tucson that does not include a visit to Saguaro National Park, the kingdom of Saguaro cacti, divided into two distinct areas of the park, the west section and the east section. Today we focus on the east section, which kicks off inside the Sonora Desert and then continues into the beautiful coniferous forest of the Rincon Mountains, whose highest peak is Mica Mountain (2641 meters) and which was the main view during the trail we hiked, the Mica Valley Loop Trail.

Una volta superato il visitor center, dovrete seguire la Cactus Forest Drive per addentrarvi nel parco e percorrere i numerosi sentieri adatti ad ogni tipo di visitatore. Noi vi racconteremo successivamente i più semplici, ma i più temerari potranno anche addentrarsi nel parco percorrendo due lunghi trails come il Garwood Loop Trail (8.5 km) e soprattutto il Tanque Verde Ridge Trail, che permette di raggiungere il Manning Camp, a 2400 metri di altitudine ad un tiro di schioppo dalla vetta del Mica Mountain.

Once you pass the visitor center, just follow the Cactus Forest Drive to enter the park and hike the many trails suitable for all types of visitors. We will tell you about the easiest ones later, but the most daring ones can also follow two long trails such as the Garwood Loop Trail (8.5 km) and especially the Tanque Verde Ridge Trail, which allows visitors to reach the Manning Camp, at 2400 meters of altitude at a stone's throw away from the top of Mica Mountain.

I MIGLIORI TRAIL DEL SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK EAST SECTION

La strada che attraversa il parco ("one way") è la Cactus Forest Drive, decisamente scenografica ed interamente asfaltata. Saranno 16 km davvero entusiasmanti. Una volta intrapresa la strada, potrete fermarvi ai diversi parcheggi e seguire uno dei tantissimi sentieri escursionistici. Noi, abbiamo scelto di percorrere il Mica Valley Loop Trail, un percorso di 3.7 miglia (loop trail) davvero semplice da seguire e molto affascinante. Se come noi deciderete di seguire il sentiero in senso orario, la prima parte (direzione nord) sarà asfaltata. Il trail entra poi nel vivo alla prima svolta a destra, questo tratto sabbioso conduce nel cuore del parco per poi tornare a concludersi a ridosso della Cactus Forest Drive. Considerate più di un'ora per percorrerlo interamente.

THE BEST TRAILS IN THE SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK EAST SECTION

The road that crosses the park (one way) is the Cactus Forest Drive: it's very scenic and entirely paved, 16 km very, very exciting. Once on the road, you can stop at the various parking lots and follow one of the many hiking trails. We have chosen to follow the Mica Valley Loop Trail, a 3.7 mile trail (loop trail) really easy to follow and very fascinating. If, like us, you decide to follow the trail clockwise, the first part (northbound) will be paved. The trail comes into its own at the first right turn, this sandy section leads into the heart of the park and then comes to an end again near the Cactus Forest Drive. It takes more than an hour to cover it entirely.

Chi cerca qualcosa di più semplice potrà invece percorrere il Desert Ecology Trail, una sorta di "aperitivo" di quello che il parco ha da offrire. I cartelli esplicativi lungo il sentiero raccontano la vita della fauna e della flora del deserto di Sonora. L'highlight della Cactus Forest Drive è invece la Javelina Rock, un must quando si avvicina il tramonto (e a Tucson il tramonto è sempre splendido). Vi basterà fare un centinaio di metri ed arrampicarvi sulle rocce per godere di un panorama splendido.  

Those looking for something easier can walk the Desert Ecology Trail. Explanatory signs along the trail tell the story of the life of Sonora's desert flora and fauna. The highlight of Cactus Forest Drive, however, is Javelina Rock, a must-see when sunset approaches (and sunset in Tucson is always gorgeous). All you have to do is walk a hundred yards and climb the rocks to enjoy the beautiful view.  

L'ultimo trail della sezione est del Saguaro National Park che ci sentiamo di consigliare lo troverete alla fine della Cactus Forest Drive e si chiama Freeman Homestead Trail (1 miglio, loop trail). Il percorso conduce ad una vecchia fattoria, casa un tempo di Stafford Freeman e della sua famiglia. Sebbene non rimanga poi molto della fattoria, i visitatori possono ancora percorrere un sentiero relativamente facile fino ai resti della loro casa, dove è possibile distinguere il pavimento di piastrelle e riposare sotto l'albero di mesquite che la famiglia ha piantato ormai moltissimi anni fa...

The last trail in the eastern section of the Saguaro National Park that we would recommend is located at the end of the Cactus Forest Drive and is called Freeman Homestead Trail (1 mile, loop trail). The trail leads to an old farmhouse, once home to Stafford Freeman and his family. While not much of the homestead remains, visitors can still walk down an easy path to their house, where people can make out their tile floor and rest beneath the mesquite tree the family planted.

HOTEL: Embassy Suites by Hilton Tucson East

L'Embassy Suites by Hilton Tucson East si è rivelato perfetto. Situato ad est della città, vicinissimo a Beyond Bread che è un panificio caffetterie in stile europeo, è stato probabilmente il miglior hotel del viaggio. Vuoi per il monolocale, vuoi per le cene economiche nel ristorante dell'hotel, vuoi per l'happy hour gratuito che prevede snack, vino e birra. Per il prezzo, circa 100 euro a notte nel periodo post natalizio, è davvero consigliatissimo.

HOTEL: Embassy Suites by Hilton Tucson East

The Embassy Suites by Hilton Tucson East turned out to be perfect. Located east of the city, very close to Beyond Bread which is a European style bakery cafeteria, it was probably the best hotel of the trip. For different reasons: especially for the studio apartment, for the cheap dinners in the hotel restaurant, or again for the free happy hour that includes snacks, wine and beer. It's also highly reccommended for the price, about 100 euros a night in the post-Christmas period.
