Uno dei tratti più lunghi dell'on the road nell'ovest del Canada è quello che collega Whistler a Kamloops, la più grande città che abbiamo incontrato nel nostro lungo peregrinare tra Vancouver e Calgary. Quasi 300 km lungo la Sea to Sky Highway sino a raggiungere quella Kamloops che di fatto è un autentico crocevia nel cuore della British Columbia, e tappa obbligata per tutti quelli che l'attraversano con destinazione i grandi parchi nazionali di Jasper e Banff. La grande attrazione della tappa, la prima dove la natura "ruba" spazio alla civiltà, è il Joffre Lakes Provincial Park, tre laghi di una bellezza stordente che nulla hanno da invidiare ai più famosi che avremmo poi incontrato nei giorni successivi...
One of the longest stretches of the on-the-road in Canada's West is the one connecting Whistler to Kamloops, the largest town we encountered in our long wanderings between Vancouver and Calgary. Almost 300 km along the Sea to Sky Highway until we reach Kamloops, which is a veritable crossroads in the heart of British Columbia, and a mandatory stop for all those who are traveling to the great national parks of Jasper and Banff. The big attraction of the stage is the Joffre Lakes Provincial Park, three stunningly beautiful lakes that have nothing to envy to the more famous ones we would later encounter in the following days...
Prima di raggiungere il parco, attraverserete la piccola Pemberton dove gli appassionati di birra e superalcolici non potranno non visitare sia la The Beer Farmers che la Pemberton Distillery. La prima, un'azienda agricola di quarta generazione, produce birra artigianale di grandissima qualità (russian imperial stout ad edizione limitata, la black lager, Equinox Hazy Pale Ale, Farmer's Daughter White e la Cover Crop Hazy IPA) da gustare in un contesto agricolo decisamente scenografico, l'altra, ovvero la Pemberton Distillery, è un autentica istituzione. Qui nella Pemberton Valley, infatti, vengono utilizzate le patate per preparare alcuni famosissimi distillati di cui la Pemberton Distillery è l'autentica regina grazie alle sue Schramm Vodka, Schramm Gin, Pemberton Distillery Single Malt Whisky e Pemberton Distillery Bourbon Barrel Aged Apple Brandy. Non solo, l'azienda è una delle poche distillerie al mondo a produrre un'intera linea di alcolici biologici certificati ed offre visite guidate al costo di 6 dollari (2022).

IL PRIMO IMPATTO CON... L'AZZURRO CANADESE
Se doveste mai chiederci cosa davvero val la pena visitare quando vi troverete in British Columbia, beh... non abbiamo dubbi, la risposta sarà sempre e soltanto il Joffre Lakes Provincial Park. E no, non sarebbe quello il consiglio principale. La prima cosa che vi diremmo, infatti, sarebbe quella di non perdere tempo perchè quello che fino a qualche anno fa era considerato "il segreto meglio custodito della British Columbia", sta diventando ormai sempre più famoso, al pari dei grandi laghi dell'Alberta, tanto che noi abbiamo seriamente rischiato di non visitarlo. E sarebbe stato un boccone amarissimo da digerire.
Before reaching the park, you'll pass through the tiny Pemberton where beer and spirits enthusiasts can't fail to visit both The Beer Farmers and Pemberton Distillery. The first one, a fourth-generation farm, brews great craft beer (limited-edition Russian imperial stout, black lager, Equinox Hazy Pale Ale, Farmer's Daughter White and Cover Crop Hazy IPA) to be enjoyed in a decidedly scenic agricultural setting; the other one, the Pemberton Distillery, is a true institution. Here in the Pemberton Valley, in fact, potatoes are used to make some very famous spirits, of which Pemberton Distillery is the authentic queen thanks to its Schramm Vodka, Schramm Gin, Pemberton Distillery Single Malt Whisky and Pemberton Distillery Bourbon Barrel Aged Apple Brandy. The company is one of the few distilleries in the world to produce an entire line of certified organic spirits and offers tours at a cost of $6 (2022).
JOFFRE LAKES PROVINCIAL PARK - THE FIRST IMPACT WITH... THE CANADIAN BLUE
If you ever ask us what is really worth visiting when you are in British Columbia, well...we have no doubt, the answer will always be the Joffre Lakes Provincial Park. And no, that's not the main advice. The first thing we would tell you, in fact, is to visit the park as soon as possbile. Why? Well, till a few years ago the Joffre Lakes Provincia Park was considered the "British Columbia's best-kept secret" but now it is becoming more and more famous, on a par with Alberta's Great Lakes, so much so that we seriously risked not visiting it. And it would have been a bitter pill to swallow.
Come visitare il Joffre Lakes Provincial park dunque? La prima cosa che vi diciamo, prima ancora di parlare nel dettaglio dei laghi e del percorso, è quella di prenotare durante il periodo estivo (gratuitamente) la vostra visita perchè altrimenti non vi sarà consentito l'accesso ai laghi. Noi, solamente la sera prima della visita ci siamo accorti che da ormai qualche tempo, a causa dell'elevato numero di visitatori (e per preservare l'ambiente), era entrata in vigore questa regola. E la verità è che siamo stati molto fortunati, perchè qualche cancellazione (la British Columbia Parks invita continuamente i visitatori a cancellare le prenotazioni se impossibilitati ad andare, per lasciar così spazio ad altre persone) ci ha consentito di effettuare la prenotazione per la mattinata.
How to visit Joffre Lakes Provincial park then? The first thing we tell you, even before talking in detail about the lakes and the trail, is to book your visit during the summer period (free of charge): otherwise you won't be allowed to get to the lakes. The night before the visit, we realized that for some time now, due to the high number of visitors (and to preserve the environment), this rule had been in effect. And the truth is that we were very lucky, because a few cancellations (British Columbia Parks continually invites visitors to cancel reservations if unable to visit the park, thus leaving room for other people) allowed us to make the reservations for the next morning.
E, una volta al parcheggio, abbiamo notato diversi visitatori respinti dai ranger perchè non in possesso della prenotazione. Una nota da tenere sempre presente: le zanzare in British Columbia sono un serissimo fastidio. Non c'è repellente che vi salvi completamente: vi terranno compagnia sostanzialmente fino a Banff.
And, once at the parking lot, we noticed several visitors turned away by rangers because they did not make any reservations. You can reserve your visit to Joffre Lakes Provincial Park directly on the British Columbia Parks website: https://bcparks.ca/reserve/day-use/. One note to always keep in mind: mosquitoes in British Columbia are a serious nuisance. There are no repellent that could fully save you basically till Banff.
Passato il "pericolo", abbiamo dunque potuto concentrarci su questo stupendo parco, il Joffre Lakes Provincial Park che, come si evince dal nome, è caratterizzato da tre splendidi laghi connessi l'uno con l'altro da un lungo sentiero escursionistico (11 km tra andata e ritorno) che dal parcheggio conduce ai prima al lower Joffre Lake, poi al Middle Joffre Lake ed infine all'Upper Joffre Lake.
Once the danger has passed, we were then able to focus on this wonderful park, Joffre Lakes Provincial Park, which, as the name suggests, features three beautiful lakes connected to each other by a long hiking trail (11 km round trip) that leads from the parking lot to first Lower Joffre Lake, then Middle Joffre Lake and finally to the Upper Joffre Lake.

Dal parcheggio del parco inizia il sentiero che vi porterà in tre tappe a raggiungere tre laghi alimentati dal ghiaccio, uno diverso dall'altro, e vi garantiamo che la fatica verrà ripagata da viste davvero incredibili. L'andata, infatti, sarà quasi completamente in salita (circa 500 metri di dislivello) e soprattutto il tratto che collega il primo lago (il lower) con il secondo (il middle) è abbastanza impegnativo, ma nulla di insormontabile.
JOFFRE LAKES PROVINCIAL PARK - THE TRAIL IN DETAIL
From the park parking lot begins the trail that will take you in three stages to three ice-fed lakes, each one different from the other, and we guarantee that the effort will be rewarded by truly incredible views. The first half of the trail, in fact, is almost completely uphill (about 500 meters of elevation gain) and especially the section connecting the first lake (the lower) with the second (the middle) is quite challenging, but nothing insurmountable.
1) Lower Joffre Lake (0.5 km)
Il primo tratto del trail è estremamente facile: 0.5 km interamente pianeggianti che conducono al view point che si affaccia sul primo lago, il verdissimo Lower Joffre Lake.

The first section of the trail is really easy: 0.5 km entirely flat leading to the viewpoint overlooking the first lake, the very green Lower Joffre Lake.
2) Middle Joffre Lake (3 km)
Se vogliamo è il tratto più impegnativo di tutto il percorso. Dopo aver costeggiato il Lower Joffre Lake, sarà una continua alternanza tra salite su un terreno a volte accidentato a tratti pianeggianti. Alternerete anche tratti in cui sarete protetti dal bosco ad altri in cui sarete esposti al sole. Ad un certo punto, dall'alto, comincerete a notare quello che fino a quel giorno sarebbe stato, almeno per noi, il lago più bello mai visto (il Middle Joffre Lake), una frase che poi avremmo più volte ripetuto durante il nostro viaggio in Canada. Qui potrete scattare diverse foto da diverse angolazioni ed i più temerari potranno camminare lungo il tronco di un albero caduto che giace in mezzo oppure tuffarsi nelle sue gelide acque.
2) Middle Joffre Lake (3 km)
This is probably the most challenging section of the entire trail. After skirting the Lower Joffre Lake, it will be a continuous alternation between climbs over rough terrain and flat sections. There will also be stretches where you are protected by the forest and others where you are exposed to the sun. At one point, from the top, we noticed the most beautiful lake we had ever seen till that day (Middle Joffre Lake), a phrase we would later repeat several times during our trip to Canada. Here you can take several photos from different angles, and the more daring can walk along the trunk of a fallen tree lying in the middle or dive into its icy waters.
3) Upper Joffre Lake (5.5 km)
L’ultimo tratto del trail, dopo aver superato le Holloway Falls, è quello che conduce davvero ad un passo dal ghiacciaio. E' qui, infatti, che troverete l'ultimo dei tre laghi, l'Upper Joffre Lake, situato proprio sotto al ghiacciaio. Qui si interrompe anche il trail, ma non lontano troverete un campeggio (occorre ottenere il pass) per trascorrere la notte.
3) Upper Joffre Lake (5.5 km)
The last section of the trail, after passing the Holloway Falls, is the one that really leads you a step away from the glacier. It is here, in fact, that you will find the last of the three lakes, Upper Joffre Lake, located just below the glacier. This is also where the trail stops, but not far away there's a campground (pass must be obtained) where hikers can spend the night.

L'unica piccola cittadina che incrocerete è quella di Lillooet, che vanta una bellissima winery, la Fort Berens Estate Winery con annesso un ottimo ristorante, mentre la grande attrazione se viaggiate con bambini è l'Historic Hat Creek Ranch, che vi catapulterà ai tempi della corsa all'oro.Potrete passare una mezza giornata visitando gli edifici di quell'epoca (costruiti tra il 1885 ed il 1905 ed ancora molto ben conservati) e scoprire come era la vita agli inizi del 1900 anche grazie ad interpreti vestiti con abiti d'epoca che ti accompagneranno in una visita guidata. E poi ancora fare un giro in sulla diligenza lungo la scenografica Hat Creek, sino a raggiungere il villaggio indiano, dove i membri della nazione Shuswap condivideranno la loro affascinante storia e la loro cultura. Potrete passeggiare lungo la strada sterrata su cui viaggiavano i treni dei vagoni e visitare la storica roadhouse, tutto all'interno di questo ranch di 130 ettari situato in una delle poche sezioni dell'originale Caribou Wagon ancora accessibile al pubblico.

TOWARDS KAMLOOPS, AMONG FARMS AND ... BRITISH COLUMBIA IN THE EARLY 1900S.
The 200 kilometers separating Joffre Lakes Provincial Park and Kamloops provide a few opportunities to stretch your legs. The only small town you'll pass is Lillooet, which boasts a beautiful winery, Fort Berens Estate Winery with an excellent restaurant attached, while the big attraction if you're traveling with children is the Historic Hat Creek Ranch, which will take you back to the days of the Gold Rush. You can spend a half-day touring the buildings of that era (built between 1885 and 1905 and still very well preserved) and discover what life was like in the early 1900s thanks in part to interpreters dressed in period clothing who offer guided tours. Then again take a ride on the stagecoach along scenic Hat Creek until you reach the Indian village, where members of the Shuswap Nation will share their fascinating history and culture. You can walk along the dirt road on which the wagon trains traveled and visit the historic roadhouse, all within this 130-acre ranch located on one of the few sections of the original Caribou Wagon still accessible to the public.
Non avremmo invece più voluto abbandonare l'Horsting's Farm Market, situato alle porte di Kamloops. E' un piccolo mercato agricolo a conduzione familiare che copre ben 85 acri ed offre oltre ad uno shop dove acquistare gustosissimi prodotti, anche un bel patio dove gustarsi un caffè, un gelato, una chicken pot pie o una delle tantissime torte prodotte nella fattoria. Tutto "farm to table".
Instead, we would not have wanted to leave Horsting's Farm Market, located just outside Kamloops. It's a small, family-run farmers' market that covers an impressive 85 acres and offers not only a shop where you can buy tasty produce, but also a beautiful patio where you can enjoy coffee, ice cream, a chicken pot pie or one of the many pies made on the farm. All farm-to-table.
COSA VEDERE A KAMLOOPS - MUSIC IN THE PARK
La verità è che, se come noi, avrete speso buona parte della giornata faticando lungo il Joffre Lakes Trail, una volta raggiunta Kamloops vorrete soltanto riposarvi in attesa della giornata successiva. Eppure, nonostante Kamloops non sia una di quelle città che offra tantissimo da vedere, rimane la più grande comunità della zona, ricca di hotels e con un centro storico comunque piacevole. Il cuore pulsante di downtown pulsa intorno a Victoria Street, una via alberata che nei giorni di sole risulta particolarmente vivace, ma è lo sport qui a dettare legge, anche grazie al Tournament Capital Center, un immenso comprensorio sportivo con diverse strutture per praticare molteplici attività sportive. Non a caso Kamloop è chiamata anche "la città dei tornei": qui se ne disputano oltre 100 all'anno, coinvolgendo ben 30 mila atleti. Cosa vedere a Kamloops? L'attrazione principale è il Kamloops Heritage Railway's 2141 Steam Locomotive and Heritage Train (un treno a vapore che corre tutto l'anno con temi sempre diversi), la "Salmon Run", ovvero il percorso controcorrente che i salmoni percorrono per deporre le uova e quindi morire ed infine il Riverside Park. Qui, ogni sera d'estate, si svolte "Music in the Park", serate in cui si esibiscono band e si può gustare del buon cibo grazie ai diversi food truck presenti. Gli appassionati di vino invece non potranno non visitare la Monte Creek Ranch Winery, una delle più rinomate cantine della British Columbia. Noi, come abbiamo detto in apertura, siamo letteralmente crollati dopo le fatiche della lunghissima tappa e abbiamo ripiegato sulla pizza di Domino's gustata nella camera del nostro hotel.
WHAT TO SEE IN KAMLOOPS - MUSIC IN THE PARK
The truth is that if, just like us, you have spent a good part of the day toiling along the Joffre Lakes Trail, once in Kamloops you will just want to rest waiting for the next day. Yet despite the fact that Kamloops is not one of those towns that offers so much to see and do, it remains the largest community in the area, packed with hotels and an otherwise pleasant downtown. The beating heart of downtown pulses around Victoria Street, a tree-lined street that is particularly lively on sunny days, but it is sports that is the highlight here, thanks in part to the Tournament Capital Center, a huge sports complex with a variety of facilities for practicing multiple sports activities. It is no coincidence that Kamloops is also called "the city of tournaments": more than 100 tournaments are held here each year, involving as many as 30,000 athletes. What to see in Kamloops? The main attraction is Kamloops Heritage Railway's 2141 Steam Locomotive and Heritage Train (a steam train that runs year-round with ever-changing themes), the "Salmon Run," which is the upstream course that salmon run to spawn and then die, and finally the Riverside Park. Here, every summer evening, "Music in the Park" takes place: bands perform and you can enjoy good food thanks to the various food trucks. Wine enthusiasts, on the other hand, should not miss a visit to Monte Creek Ranch Winery, one of the most renowned wineries in British Columbia. We, as we mentioned at the beginning of the post, literally collapsed after the exertions of the very long stage and folded on Domino's pizza enjoyed in our hotel room.
