Durante un viaggio la giornata di pioggia, pronta potenzialmente a rovinare i piani, è sempre dietro l'angolo. A maggior ragione nel verdissimo Canada ed in particolare nella zona montuosa al confine tra la British Columbia e l'Alberta. Un vero peccato, perché le condizioni atmosferiche non facili (tanta pioggia e tantissimo freddo) non ci hanno permesso di visitare nel migliore dei modi quella che sarebbe stata la grande attrazione della tappa, quella che da Kamloops ci porterà a Valemount, ormai alle porte del Jasper National Park. Parliamo del più famoso parco provinciale della British Columbia, il Wells Gray Provincial Park, il cui nomignolo è " The Land of 41 Named Waterfalls- and counting!". La terra delle 41 cascate... ed il conto continua a crescere!
On a road trip, the rainy day is always just around the corner and can easily ruin your plans. Even more so in the verdant Canada and particularly in the mountainous area on the border between British Columbia and Alberta. A real pity, because the bad weather conditions (a lot of rain and a lot of cold) did not allow us to visit in the best way what would have been the one and only attraction of the stage (from Kamloops to Valemount, till the gates of Jasper National Park). We are talking about British Columbia's most famous provincial park, Wells Gray Provincial Park, whose nickname is " The Land of 41 Named Waterfalls-and counting!"...
WELLS GRAY PROVINCIAL PARK, IL REGNO DELLE CASCATE!
Il Wells Gray Provincial Park dista circa un'ora e mezza da Kamloops e noi avremmo comunque scelto di dedicare l'intera giornata al parco, con o senza pioggia. Chi invece volesse spezzettare il tragitto, potrebbe visitare il Lac du Bois Grassland Provincial Park, dove ampie praterie, spettacolari scogliere e canyon, foreste, stagni segreti e piccoli laghi attendono il visitatore nella più nuova tra le aree protette della British Columbia. Il modo migliore per esplorare questa area non così sponsorizzata in British Columbia è, secondo l'Ufficio del Turismo, quella "di seguire la strada del Lac du Bois per circa 15 km all'interno nel parco, per poi tornare sui propri passi. Quindi, se vorrai esplorare maggiormente l'area, dirigiti a ovest oltre l'aeroporto e poi lungo la Tranquille-Criss Creek Road. Sfortunatamente, non c'è un buon percorso circolare da seguire, ma consigliamo di parcheggiare e camminare per le praterie".
WELLS GRAY PROVINCIAL PARK, THE REALM OF WATERFALLS!
Wells Gray Provincial Park is about an hour and a half from Kamloops, and we would always choose to spend the entire day visiting the park, rain or shine. Those who would like to break up the drive, however, could visit the Lac du Bois Grassland Provincial Park, where vast grasslands, spectacular cliffs and canyons, forests, secret ponds and small lakes await the visitor in the newest of British Columbia's protected areas. The best way to explore this not-so-sponsored area in British Columbia is, according to the Bureau of Tourism, to "follow the Lac du Bois road about 15 km inland into the park, then retrace your steps. Then, if you want to explore more of the area, head west past the airport and then along the Tranquille-Criss Creek Road. Unfortunately, there is no good loop route to follow, but we recommend to park in one of the many parking lot and wal through the grasslands."
Coloro i quali sceglieranno invece di dirigersi immediatamente verso il Wells Gray Provincial Park, incroceranno la piccola Barriere, che grazie ai 75 laghi nel raggio di 40 km, è una comunità che basa la sua economia sulle attività legate all'acqua, tra cui la canoa, la pesca sportiva e le immersioni. La "gate town" del Wells Gray Provincial Park è invece Clearwater che, se ci passate al sabato mattino, regala anche un bellissimo mercato degli agricoltori, il Clearwater Farmers Market, non lontano dal visitor center del parco, a cui è stato assegnato il premio di " friendliest info center in B.C. " (416 Eden Rd, Clearwater).
Those who choose instead to head immediatelyto the Wells Gray Provincial Park, will cross the little Barriere, which, thanks to the 75 lakes within a 40-mile radius, is a community that bases its economy on water-related activities, including canoeing, sport fishing and diving. The gate town of Wells Gray Provincial Park, on the other hand, is Clearwater, which, if you pass through on a Saturday morning, also hosts a wonderful farmers' market, the Clearwater Farmers Market, not far from the park's visitor center, which has been appointed "the friendliest info center in B.C. " (416 Eden Rd, Clearwater).
Proprio da qui prende il via la Clearwater Valley Park, la strada lunga 29 km che attraversa il Wells Gray Provincial Park, il quarto più grande per estensione dell'intera British Columbia. e che termina al Clearwater Lake. In mezzo cinque laghi, due vasti sistemi fluviali, 41 cascate e tantissima flora e fauna.
It is from here that the Clearwater Valley Park, the 29-kilometer-long road through Wells Gray Provincial Park, the fourth-largest in size in all of British Columbia, begins: it then ends at the Clearwater Lake. In between there are five lakes, two vast river systems, 41 waterfalls and plenty of flora and fauna.
COME VISITARE IL WELLS GRAY PROVINCIAL PARK
Una volta intrapresa la Clearwater Valley Park, avrete davvero l'imbarazzo della scelta. Se siete di corsa il consiglio è di affidarsi agli highlights del parco, tutti raggiungibili dalla strada principale o con piccolissimi sentieri. Come abbiamo già detto nel precedente post, qui le zanzare sono un serissimo problema. Anche con la pioggia!
HOW TO VISIT WELLS GRAY PROVINCIAL PARK
Once you embark on Clearwater Valley Park, you really will be spoiled for choice. If you are in a hurry, the advice is to rely on the park's highlights, all of which can be reached from the main road or by very easy trails. As we mentioned in the previous post, mosquitoes are a very serious problem here. Even in the rain!
1) Spahats falls
A 10 km dal centro visitatori spiccano le Spahats Falls (60 metri di altezza), raggiungibili dal parcheggio con una brevissima passeggiata (circa 5 minuti) che conduce al belvedere.

Located just 10 km from the visitor center, the Spahats Falls (60 meters high) are reached by a very short walk (about 5 minutes) from the parking lot to the lookout.
2) Moul Falls
Le Moul Falls sono tra le più affascinanti cascate del Wells Grey Provincial Park. Si raggiungono attraverso un sentiero di 5.8 (andata/ritorno) che dopo un tratto polveroso si avventura nel bosco sino a raggiungere la scala di metallo che conduce alla cascata. L'ultimo tratto è decisamente ripido seppur breve.
3) Dawson falls
Proseguendo lungo la Clearwater Valley Park, dopo circa 40 km (dal visitor center), sulla destra incrocerete il parcheggio delle Dawson Falls. In questo caso il sentiero è brevissimo (circa 10 minuti) e conduce a due viewpoint uno vicino all'altro, uno dei quali situato proprio a bordo cascata.
2) Moul Falls
Moul Falls are among the most fascinating waterfalls in Wells Grey Provincial Park. They can be reached via a 5.8 (round trip) trail that, after a dusty section, ventures into the woods until it reaches the metal staircase that leads to the waterfall. The last section is decidedly steep even if it's very short.
3) Dawson falls
Continuing along Clearwater Valley Park, after about 40 km (from the visitor center), you will cross the Dawson Falls parking lot on the right. In this case the trail is very short (about 10 minutes) and leads to two viewpoints next to each other, one of them located right at the edge of the falls.
4) Helmeck falls
Cinque chilometri dopo le Dawson Falls ecco le Helmcken Falls, probabilmente le più scenografiche del parco. Il belvedere si raggiunge con una passeggiata molto semplice (circa 5 minuti): da qui si può ammirare la splendida cascata che si getta nel canyon dall'altro di suoi 140 metri di altezza.
4) Helmeck falls
Five kilometers after the Dawson Falls, you'll see the Helmcken Falls, probably the most scenic waterfall in the park. The overlook can be reached by a very easy walk (about 5 minutes): from here visitors can admire the stunning waterfall (140 meters high) that cascades into the canyon.
5) Clearwater lake
La strada s'interrompe una volta raggiunto il Clearwater Lake, dove potrete rilassarvi, prendere il sole, noleggiare una canoa o sorseggiare una bevanda al cafè. Sia Clearwater Lake che il vicino Azure Lake sono alimentati da ghiacciai e l'acqua è ovviamente molto fredda durante tutto l'anno.
6) Trophy Mountain
Se la giornata lo consente, prima di lasciare il parco consigliamo di fare una breve deviazione verso le Trophy Mountain, un insieme di nove cime, tra cui la più altra arriva quasi a 3000 metri slm. Qui infatti ci si immerge nel classico ambiente alpino, flora e fauna particolari. E' un'escursione di 45 minuti attraverso una foresta pluviale ricca di abeti profumati e abeti sub-alpini, alternata a bellissimi prati fioriti che vi regaleranno foto da cartolina. Per raggiungere le "Trophies", dovrete deviare a destra subito dopo aver lasciato le Spahats Falls: percorrete la strada per 1.7 km quindi svoltare a sinistra lungo la Road 10 e seguitela per 3.1 km prima di svoltare definitivamente lungo la "201" per 4.4 km sino al parcheggio. I più avventurosi invece potranno visitare Murtle Lake, il più grande lago del Nord America sul quale si può navigare solo in canoa, oppure il Mahood Lake, l'unico del parco non di origine glaciale e quindi con le acque un po' più caldine...
5) Clearwater lake
The road stops once you reach Clearwater Lake, where you can relax, sunbathe, rent a canoe or sip a drink at the café. Both Clearwater Lake and nearby Azure Lake are fed by glaciers and the water is obviously very cold throughout the year.
6) Trophy Mountain
If the day permits it, before leaving the park we recommend taking a short detour to Trophy Mountains, a collection of nine peaks, the highest of which reaches almost 3,000 meters above sea level. Here, in fact, you are immersed in the classic alpine environment, distinctive flora and fauna. It's a 45-minute hike through a rainforest full of fragrant fir and sub-alpine fir trees, alternating with beautiful flowering meadows that will give you postcard-perfect photos. To reach the "Trophies," you will have to detour to the right immediately after leaving Spahats Falls: drive along the road for 1.7 km, then turn left along Road 10 and follow it for 3.1 km before finally turning along "201" for 4.4 km to the parking lot. The more adventurous, on the other hand, can visit Murtle Lake, the largest lake in North America on which you can navigate only by canoe, or Mahood Lake, the only one in the park not of glacial origin and therefore with somewhat warmer waters...
