Sono in tanti a conoscerla per via dei numerosissimi sport invernali che ospita e che vediamo ogni inverno in televisione, ma sono ancora di più quelli che decidono di spendere le proprie vacanze qui, che siano quelle estive o invernali. Già, perchè Whistler è un autentico gioiellino, un paradiso per chi ama lo sport e stare all'aria aperta, una località che pur essendo decisamente rinomata, non stanca davvero mai. Chiamata così per il forte fischio (whistle) delle marmotte che popolano la zona, è suddivisa in quattro quartieri (Creekside, Whistler Village, Village North e Upper Village) ed è una delle poche località del Nordamerica a vantare un bellissimo centro storico pedonale, ricco di negozi, ristoranti e locali.
There are many people who know it because of the numerous winter sports events that are held there and that we see on television every winter, but there are even more people who decide to spend their vacations here, whether they are summer or winter vacations. That's right, because Whistler is a real gem, a paradise for those who love sports and being outdoors, a place that while being definitely renowned, never really gets tired. Named for the loud whistling (whistle) of the marmot that populate the entire area, it is divided into four neighborhoods (Creekside, Whistler Village, Village North and Upper Village) and is one of the few resorts in North America to boast a beautiful pedestrian-friendly downtown, full of stores, restaurants and bars.
Da queste parti sono passate anche le Olimpiadi (quelle di Vancouver, nel 2010), ma passano anche oltre 2 milioni di visitatori all'anno e non possiamo che confermare l'opinione di molti: più tempo spenderete a Whistler (anche esplorando i suoi dintorni), più ne resterete affascinati...

COSA VEDERE A WHISTLER - WHISTLER VILLAGE E FUNCTION JUNCTION
Whistler sorge ai piedi delle Blackcomb Mountain e, pur essendo relativamente piccola, offre un centro storico pedonale "all'europea" decisamente interessante. Dalla Whistler Olympic Plaza, che ricorda lo spirito olimpico di Whistler, perdetevi esplorando il "Village", tra negozi di souvenir, quelli alla moda e tantissimi locali. Se invece siete alla ricerca di qualcosa di diverso, spingetevi a sud della città, verso Function Junction, l'area frequentata dai locali. Qui troverete due ottimi birrifici, la Coast Mountain Brewing e la Whistler Brewing Co. E chi ama lo sport? Durante l'inverno gli sport della neve e del ghiaccio la fanno da padrone, d'estate la mountain bike è la regina di Whistler. Senza dimenticare quel gioiellino chiamato Peak to Peak Gondola, la cabinovia più alta al mondo che collega le diverse montagne (parte del Blackcomb) senza dover per forza tornare ogni volta a valle. La Peak to Peak (436 metri sul livello del mare) vanta innumerevoli record ed è una di quelle esperienze da non perdere quando si visita Whistler, così come la bellissima Scandinave Spa, un altro fiore all'occhiello di questa stupenda località montana.
WHAT TO SEE IN WHISTLER - WHISTLER VILLAGE AND FUNCTION JUNCTION
Whistler is located at the foot of Blackcomb Mountain and, while relatively small, it offers a decidedly interesting "European-style" pedestrian-friendly downtown. From the Whistler Olympic Plaza, reminiscent of Whistler's Olympic spirit, get lost exploring the "Village," among souvenir stores, trendy ones, and plenty of bars. If you are looking for something different, however, venture further south of town to Function Junction, the area frequented by locals. Here you will find two excellent breweries, Coast Mountain Brewing and Whistler Brewing Co. What about those who like sports? During the winter, snow and ice sports rule the day; in the summer, mountain biking is the queen of Whistler. Without forgetting that little gem called the Peak to Peak Gondola, the highest gondola in the world that connects the different mountains (part of Blackcomb) without having to return to the valley every time. The Peak to Peak (436 meters above sea level) boasts countless records and is one of those experiences not to be missed when visiting Whistler, as well as the beautiful Scandinave Spa, another flagship of this wonderful mountain town.
RAFTING E RZR TOUR CON "THE ADVENTURE GROUP"
Quando si visita Whistler occorrerebbe avere a disposizione almeno una settimana. Ma, se come noi, avrete scelto di spendere due notti qui, dovrete fare delle scelte, alcune delle quali davvero dolorose. E allora, cosa fare a Whistler e come gestire al meglio una singola giornata nella "città delle marmotte"? A seconda di quelli che sono i vostri gusti, troverete sempre qualcosa di interessante a Whistler. Ma se siete alla ricerca dell'avventura, nulla batte "The Adventure Group" che ci ha regalato una tra le mezze giornate più belle di sempre in Nordamerica. Li abbiamo preferiti rispetto alla Peak to Peak Gondola ed alla Scandinave Spa, e non avremmo potuto fare scelta migliore. La nostra preferenza è ricaduta sul rafting, sull'avventura sulle RZR e sulla splendida Vallea Lumina, ma la scelta è davvero illimitata. Qualche esempio? RAFTING AND RZR TOURS WITH "THE ADVENTURE GROUP"
When visiting Whistler you would need at least a week for all the beauties of its sorroundings. But, if like us, you have chosen to spend just two nights here, you will have to make choices, some of them really painful. So, what to do in Whistler and how to better manage a single day in the "marmot town"? Depending on what your tastes are, you will always find something interesting in Whistler. But if you are looking for adventure, nothing beats "The Adventure Group" which gave us one of the best half days ever in North America. We preferred them over the Peak to Peak Gondola and the Scandinave Spa, and we could not have made a better choice. The Adventure Group , does, in fact, offer something of interest for everyone, young and old. We decided to do rafting, drive the amazing RZRs and experience the beautiful Vallea Lumina, but the choice is truly limitless. A few examples? During the winter you can take snowmobile or snowshoeing trips, all year long you can even experience the Superfly Zipline, go bungee jumping and visit the Audain Art Museum. La giornata è cominciata con l'avventura a bordo delle RZR, dei piccoli fuoristrada che permettono di attraversare i terreni impervi del Whistler Backcountry. Abbiamo guidato in mezzo alle rocce, superato terreni fangosi ed alcuni tratti davvero ripidi: un'ora e mezza di pura adrenalina che ci sentiamo di consigliare a chiunque passi dalle parti di Whistler. E poi il rafting, sempre molto divertente. Ci siamo recati sulle sponde del Green Lake e da qui è cominciata l'avventura lungo il Green River, tra rapidi e tanta, tantissima adrenalina.
The day began with a truly amazing adventure aboard the RZRs that allow you to traverse the rugged terrain of the Whistler Backcountry. We drove through rocks, over muddy terrain and some really steep sections: an hour and a half of pure adrenaline that we would recommend to anyone passing through Whistler. And then the whitewater rafting, always great fun. We went to the shores of Green Lake where the adventure down the Green River began, between rapids and lots and lots of adrenaline.
Durante il pomeriggio ci siamo spinti a nord, sino alle porte della piccola Pemberton, per ammirare la cascata più famosa dei dintorni di Whistler, le Nairn Falls, situate all'interno del Nairn Falls Provincial Park. Il parco di 170 ettari, istituito nel 1966, permette l'accesso grazie ad un sentiero di 3 km (tra andata e ritorno) di raggiungere le Nairn Falls, una doppia cascata collegata da un piccolo canyon che rallenta il flusso del Green River appena prima del suo ingresso nella Pemberton Valley. Le cascate sono raggiungibili tramite un sentiero facile e piacevole: sarete immersi nella natura, circondati da alberi altissimi e accompagnati dal rumore del fiume che scorre sotto di voi. Alla fine del percorso vi attende una terrazza panoramica che offre una splendida vista sulle cascate.
During the afternoon we venture further north to the outskirts of the tiny Pemberton to see the most famous waterfall around Whistler, Nairn Falls, located within the Nairn Falls Provincial Park. The 170-hectare park, established in 1966, provides access via a 3-kilometer trail (round trip) to the Nairn Falls, a double waterfall connected by a small canyon that slows the flow of the Green River just before it enters the Pemberton Valley. The falls can be reached by an easy and pleasant trail: you will be surrounded by nature, surrounded by tall trees and accompanied by the sound of the river flowing below you. At the end of the trail a viewing terrace awaits you, offering a splendid view of the falls.
Ed infine, la sera, siamo tornati alla base delle Cougar Mountain per un'altra grande avventura targata "The Adventure Group", la Vallea Lumina. Da queste parti le leggende raccontano di un sentiero perduto da tempo che conduce a una valle segreta che, grazie a Moment Factory, leader globale nel video, nell'illuminazione, nell'audio e negli effetti speciali, siamo riusciti ad ammirare nel cuore della notte.
And finally, in the evening, we returned to the base of the Cougar Mountains for another great adventure offered by "The Adventure Group", the Lumina Valley. Old stories tell of the wondrous things that happen near Whistler. Between the trees, in the shadow of mountains, legends say there’s a hidden valley where stardust falls from the sky, filling all living things with its pure light. It’s a place that’s filled with unexpected enchantment. This evening excursion let visitors follow cryptic radio transmissions and the lingering traces of two long-ago hikers to find the scenic trailhead where the real journey begins… This pathway leads toward a place filled with beauty, and proof that the legends of Whistler are true.
Già, perchè tutto ad un tratto la foresta di Whistler si è animata, regalandoci un piccolo trail (1.5 km) nei boschi tra giochi di luce e... pura magia!
Well, because all of a sudden the Whistler forest came alive, giving us a little trail (1.5 km) in the woods amidst plays of light and... pure magic!
