Jasper è un parco che, come abbiamo detto, non solo non stanca mai, ma che offre possibilità diverse a seconda dei propri gusti. Quello a cui solitamente un visitatore non rinuncia mai è tuttavia la possibilità di percorrere da scenografica Maligne Lake Road, da sempre il tratto distintivo del Jasper National Park. Ed è proprio da qui che cominciamo la seconda giornata di esplorazione del parco, da nord, dove prendono il via i 46 km (tra andata e ritorno) della Maligne Lake Road, tanto scenica come la destinazione finale, lo scenografico Maligne Lake. E' qui che si hanno le maggiori possibilità di avvistare alci e lupi, oltre ovviamente agli orsi, lungo una strada che si percorre con il naso all'insù, ammirando la clamorosa natura del parco nazionale di Jasper...
Jasper is a park that, as we have said, not only never get bored with it, but offers different possibilities depending on one's tastes. What a visitor usually never gives up, however, is the opportunity to drive by scenic Maligne Lake Road, which has always been the hallmark of Jasper National Park. And it is from here that we begin our second day's exploration of the park, from the north, where the 46 kilometers (round trip) of the Maligne Lake Road, as scenic as its final destination, scenic Maligne Lake, kicks off. It is here that one has the best chance of spotting moose and wolves, as well as bears of course, along a road that people travels with the nose up, admiring the amazing nature of Jasper National Park...
MALIGNE CANYON, MEDICINE LAKE E MALIGNE LAKE
GLI HIGHLIGHTS DELLA MALIGNE LAKE ROAD
Il Maligne Canyon lo si incrocia subito, appena imboccata la Maligne Lake Road, ed è di fatto una delle attrazioni principali del Jasper National Park. E, come spesso accade in queste occasioni, quando è troppo inflazionato rischia di deludere le attese. E' il caso del Maligne Canyon che, almeno secondo il nostro punto di vista, non è così affascinante come molti altri luoghi del parco nazionale. Eppure parliamo di un canyon profondo 50 metri ed attraversato da ben sei ponti, perfetto per coloro i quali sono alla ricerca di una passeggiata (anche piuttosto lunga) nella più totale sicurezza. Il trail da percorrere per ammirarlo è, infatti, piacevole e vario: ad attendervi ci saranno ripidi scalini, numerosi sentieri ed i già citati ponti, che scavalcano diverse volte il Maligne River.
MALIGNE CANYON, MEDICINE LAKE AND MALIGNE LAKE
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MALIGNE LAKE ROAD
Maligne Canyon is immediately visible as soon as you turn onto Maligne Lake Road, and is in fact one of the main attractions of Jasper National Park. And, as often happens in this kind of case, when a place is overhyped, it could probably disappoint your expectations. It happened with the Maligne Canyon, which, at least in our pont of view, is not as fascinating as many other places in the national park. Yet we are talking about a canyon 50 meters deep and crossed by as many as six bridges, perfect for those who are looking for a walk (even a rather long one) in total safety. The trail to admire it is, in fact, pleasant and varied: there aresteep steps, numerous paths and the already mentioned bridges, which bypass the Maligne River several times.
Il parcheggio principale è quello del Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen: da qui potrete cominciare il sentiero che, se completato interamente, diventerà un loop di circa 5 km. Il "Parking lot" tuttavia si riempie davvero velocemente, per questo consigliamo (nel caso non doveste trovare posto), il parcheggio del view point, situato a circa 700 metri dal parcheggio principale o, in alternativa, quello situato a ridosso del "fifth Bridge".
The main parking lot is located at the Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen: from here you can start the trail, which is a loop of about 5 km. However, the Parking lot fills up really fast, so we recommend (if it's full), the view point parking lot, located about 700 meters from the main parking lot or, alternatively, the one located near the "fifth Bridge."
In questo caso il percorso da compiere sarà al contrario: partirete dal quinto ponte sino a raggiungere il primo. Ad essere sinceri, tuttavia, una volta percorso parte del sentiero (ad esempio dal first bridge al third bridge), potrete tranquillamente tornare sui vostri passi e dedicare più tempo alle altre bellezze del Jasper National Park
In this case, the path to take will be in reverse: it starts from the fifth bridge and ends at the first bridge. To be honest, however, once you have walked part of the trail (e.g., from the first bridge to the third bridge), you can safely retrace your steps and spend more time on the other sights of Jasper National Park
A metà della Maligne Lake Road, dove non troverete alcun cenno di civiltà e neppure segnale per il vostro telefono, incrocerete il Medicine Lake, un lago che a livello scenografico non è indimenticabile, ma che è davvero del tutto particolare. Saltuariamente, infatti, sparisce... tanto che i nativi erano soliti considerarlo soprannaturale. In realtà è venuta in soccorso la scienza, spiegando il motivo per cui l'acqua del Medicine Lake si alzi e si abbassi: tutto ciò è dovuto ad una sorta di "buco" che si trova sul fondo, che porta di fatto il lago stesso a funzionare come e fosse un lavandino, risultando dunque quasi vuoto quando l'acqua in entrata è inferiore a quella in uscita.
Halfway down Maligne Lake Road, where there's no hint of civilization or even a signal for your phone, you will cross Medicine Lake, a lake that is not scenically unforgettable, but is really quite unique. Occasionally, in fact, it... disappears-so much so that the natives used to consider it supernatural. Actually, science has come to the rescue, explaining why the water in Medicine Lake rises and falls: this is all due to a kind of "hole" that is located at the bottom, which actually leads the lake itself to function as a sink, thus being almost empty when the incoming water is less than the outgoing water.
La strada si conclude al Maligne Lake, da dove partono le famosissime crociere verso Spirit Island. L'unico modo per ammirare questo solitario lago è quello di noleggiare una canoa, seguire uno dei tanti sentieri che costeggiano il lago oppure salire sulla già citata Maligne Lake Cruise, votata da ben 8 milioni di canadesi come "la crociera più bella del Canada". Noi non l'abbiamo fatto, complice il costo esorbitante (72 dollari a persona) e per il fatto che il parco, come abbiamo già abbondantemente detto, offre tantissime possibilità di stare a contatto con la natura in maniera totalmente gratuita. Ma, nel caso doveste essere interessati, la crociera consente di avvistare (e visitare) Spirit Island, la piccola isola remota nel cuore del Maligne Lake.
The road ends at Maligne Lake, from where the very famous cruises to Spirit Island depart. The only way to admire this lonely lake is to hire a canoe, follow one of the many trails that run along the lake, or go on the aforementioned Maligne Lake Cruise, voted by as many as 8 million Canadians as "the most beautiful cruise in Canada." We did not come aboard, because of the exorbitant cost ($72 per person) and due to the fact that the park, as we have already mentioned abundantly, offers so many opportunities to be in touch with nature totally free of charge. But, should you be interested, the cruise allows you to spot (and visit) Spirit Island, the small remote island in the heart of Maligne Lake.
Quello che invece dovrebbe davvero essere un must quando si vista il Jasper National Park è il Cavell Meadows & Path of the Glacier. Per raggiungere questo luogo magico dovrete percorrere un brevissimo tratto di Icefield Parkway e svoltare poi a destra lungo la ripidissima e scenografica Edith Cavell Road, una strada chiusa da novembre ad aprile e che conduce prima al Cavell Lake e poi, al termine della strada stessa, al parcheggio del Mt Edith Cavell.
What really shouldn't be missed when visiting Jasper National Park, however, is the Cavell Meadows & Path of the Glacier. To reach this magical place, visitors will have to drive a very short distance down Icefield Parkway and then turn right along the very steep and scenic Edith Cavell Road, a road that is closed from November to April and leads first to Cavell Lake and then, at the end of the road itself, to the Mt Edith Cavell parking lot.
Da qui parte un brevissimo sentiero (1.6 km) verso l'Angel Glacier, che si può ammirare da posizione davvero privilegiata.

Anche se vietato, sono in tanti (tra cui anche noi), quelli che scendono fino al lago ghiacciato, per scattare quella che probabilmente sarà la foto più bella dell'intero Jasper National Park. Ecco, qui dimenticatevi il caos del Maligne Canyon o della Valley of Five Lakes. Qui potrete davvero respirare la vera aria del Jasper National Park...
Although it is forbidden to walk ther, many visitors (we too) decide to descend to the frozen lake, to take what will probably be the most beautiful photo in the entire Jasper National Park. Here, forget the chaos of Maligne Canyon or the Valley of Five Lakes. Here you can really breathe in the real air of Jasper National Park....
Se doveste avere più tempo a disposizione, consigliamo, una volta raggiunto l'Angel Glacier, di proseguire l'escursione e completare gli 8.6 km del Cavell Meadows Trail, dove ad attendervi troverete magnifiche vedute sui prati in fiore e tanta, tantissima wildlife. Per percorrere questo sentiero dovrete prenotarvi presso l'ufficio informazioni. Attenzione al dislivello di questo sentiero, che è di ben 500 metri.
Should you have more time to spend visiting this area of Jasper, once you reach Angel Glacier, we reccomend to continue the hike and complete the entire 8.6 km of the Cavell Meadows Trail, where magnificent views of flowering meadows and lots and lots of wildlife await you. Hikers will need to reserve a spot at the information office to hike this trail. Watch out for the elevation gain on this trail, which is a whopping 500 meters.
L'ultimo stop di giornata è invece a nord ovest di Jasper. Anche in questo caso si percorre una strada, la Pyramid Lake Road che s'interromperà una volta raggiunto il parcheggio dell'omonimo lago, uno dei più particolari dell'area. La peculiarità di questo lago è, infatti, la Pyramid Island, un' isola davvero piccola collegata da un ponte di legno alla terraferma. La miglior vista sul lago e sulle montagne circostanzi l'avrete proprio da qui, soprattutto dall'area pic nic risalente al 1933. Il momento migliore per visitare questo lago è l'alba ed il tramonto dove, se siete fortunati, potrete sbirciare anche parecchi animali che giungono sulle rive del Pyramid Lake per abbeverarsi.
Instead, the last stop of the day is northwest of Jasper. Here again we drive along a road, the Pyramid Lake Road, which ends at the parking lot of the lake of the same name, one of the most peculiar in the area. The special feature of this lake is, in fact, Pyramid Island, a 'really small island connected by a wooden bridge to the mainland. You will get the best view of the lake and the surrounding mountains from here, especially from the picnic area dating back to 1933. The best time to visit this lake is sunrise and sunset where, if you are lucky enough, you can also peek at several animals that come to the shores of Pyramid Lake to water.
Non preoccupatevi se non doveste trovare parcheggio direttamente davanti a Pyramid Lake: vi basterà proseguire per qualche metro e raggiungere il grande parcheggio sterrato dove di fatto si conclude la Pyramid Lake Road. Poco prima di raggiungere Pyramid Lake incrocerete anche un altro lago, il Patricia Lake. Gli appassionati di camminate potranno percorrere il loop di 4.8 km intorno al lago per ammirarlo da diverse angolazioni.
Don't worry if you don't find parking directly in front of Pyramid Lake: just continue a few yards and reach the large dirt parking lot where Pyramid Lake Road actually ends. Just before reaching Pyramid Lake you will also cross another lake, Patricia Lake. Hiking enthusiasts can walk the 4.8-kilometer loop around the lake to admire it from different angles.
