Dopo un lungo peregrinare eccoci finalmente al clou del viaggio, i due parchi nazionali più famosi del Canada e che da sempre fanno sognare i turisti di tutto il mondo, ovvero Jasper e Banff. Prima uno, poi l'altro, stiamo per affrontarli in sei intensissimi giorni in cui vi racconteremo tutto, ma proprio tutto, quello che c'è da vedere sia a Jasper National Park che a Banff National Park. Ma prima c'è ancora da attraversare il confine tra la British Columbia e l'Alberta e quindi lasciare Valemount per immergersi nel cuore della Robson Valley, dove in realtà avremmo dovuto spendere almeno mezza giornata esplorando il Mount Robson Provincial Park, uno dei più belli tra i Provincial Park della British Columbia. Ma, dopo la pioggia del giorno precedente, ecco un'altra doccia fredda: il trail che conduce al Kinney Lake è chiuso in seguito ad una frana che ha distrutto parte del percorso, obbligandoci a saltare uno dei sentieri escursionistici che più aspettavamo con impazienza. Doveste essere più fortunati di noi, il percorso verso Kinney Lake, che comincia al termine della Kinney Lake Road (la strada che attraversa l'intero Mount Robson Provincial Park) è una piccola parte del sentiero più famoso della BC, quello che porta sino al Berg Lake Trail. Non si tratta di un semplice trail, ma di una lunghissima escursione da effettuare in più giorni lunga ben 46 km tra andata e ritorno (occorre ottenere il permesso al bellissimo visitor center del parco per poterlo percorrere). Sono 11 invece quelli per arrivare al Kinney Lake (anche qui tra andata e ritorno): sia il sentiero che costeggia il Robson River che il lago, bellissimo, valgono la fatica degli 11 km.
After a long wanderlust, here we are finally at the highlight of the trip, the two most famous national parks in Canada and the ones that have always made tourists from all over the world dream, namely Jasper and Banff. First one, then the other, we are about to visit them in six very intense days in which we will tell you everything, but really everything, there is to see in both Jasper National Park and Banff National Park. But first there is still to cross the border between British Columbia and Alberta and then leave Valemount to plunge into the heart of the Robson Valley, where we actually should have spent at least half a day exploring Mount Robson Provincial Park, one of the most beautiful of British Columbia's provincial parks. But, after the previous rainy day, here comes another "cold shower": the trail leading to Kinney Lake is closed following a landslide that destroyed part of the trail, forcing us to skip one of the hiking trails we were most looking forward to. If you're luckier than us, the trail to Kinney Lake, which begins at the end of Kinney Lake Road (the road that runs through the entire Mount Robson Provincial Park) is a small part of BC's most famous trail, the one that leads up to the Berg Lake Trail. This is not just a trail, but a very long multi-day hike that is a 46 km long round trip (you need to get permission at the beautiful park's visitor center). Instead, there are 11 km to hike to get to Kinney Lake (again, round trip): both the trail along the Robson River and the beautiful lake are worth the 11 km effort.

JASPER NATIONAL PARK, DOVE DORMIRE? - "THE PINE BUNGALOWS"
Ghiacciai, sorgenti termali, laghi (tanti...), montagne e vallate e poi anche e soprattutto 1200 km di sentieri dove c'è molta più possibilità di incontrare wildlife rispetto alle persone. Esiste un posto migliore al mondo del mondo di Jasper National Park? No, noi non crediamo. E' qui che per la prima volta abbiamo visto un orso in libertà, è qui che abbiamo sperimentato la potenza della montagna (e dei ghiacciai) al massimo livello possibile, in questo parco che è il più grande delle intere Rocky Mountains Canadesi con i suoi 10-878 km2 e che prende il nome da Jasper Hawes, che per primo qui aprì un "trading post" e diede il via al Jasper per come lo conosciamo oggi.
JASPER NATIONAL PARK, WHERE TO SLEEP? - "THE PINE BUNGALOWS"
Glaciers, hot springs, lakes (lots of them...), mountains and valleys and then also and above all the 1200 km of trails where there is much more chance of encountering wildlife than people. Is there a better place in the world than Jasper National Park? No, we don't think so. It is here that we first met a bear in the wild, it is here that we experienced the power of the mountains (and glaciers) at the highest possible level, in this park that is the largest of the entire Canadian Rocky Mountains (10-878 km2) and named after Jasper Hawes, who first opened a trading post here and started Jasper as we know it today.

Ce n'è davvero per tutti i gusti, e ce ne siamo resi conto durante il day 1 nel parco, nel quale abbiamo alternato canyons a cascate violentissime, laghi bellissimi ma affollati con altri in cui, come dicevano in precedenza, si è incontrato più wildlife che persone. Tutto il Jasper che c'è nel Jasper, a partire dal luogo dove abbiamo scelto di dormire per un paio di notti, il "The Pine Bungalows" che, nonostante sia un alloggio tra i meno dispendiosi a livello economico (qui costa tutto tantissimo), è un luogo davvero magico. Già, perchè diverse casette in legno sono posizionate a due passi dall'Athabasca River, con gli animali come i cervi o anche gli orsi che quasi bussano alla vostra porta rimarrà una delle esperienze più significative dell'intero viaggio nelle "Rockies".
There really is something for everyone, and we realized that during the Day 1 in the park, where we alternated canyons with raging waterfalls, beautiful but crowded lakes with others where, as we said earlier, we encountered more wildlife than people. That's just Jasper National Park, starting with the place where we chose to stay for a couple of nights, "The Pine Bungalows," which, despite being one of the least economically expensive lodgings (everything is expensive here!), is a truly magical place. Yeah, because several wooden cottages are locate a stone's throw from the Athabasca River, with animals such as deer or even bears almost knocking on your door, will remain one of the most meaningful experiences of the entire trip to the "Rockies."
COSA VEDERE AL JASPER NATIONAL PARK - DAY 1
VALLEY OF FIVE LAKES, ATHABASCA FALLS ANNETTE LAKE
Il Jasper National Park, il cui ingresso costa 9.80 dollari a persona, al giorno, offre davvero l'imbarazzo della scelta. Il nostro aperitivo con il parco è stato con l'affascinante Valley of Five Lakes, situata lungo la Icefield Parkway una manciata di minuti a sud della cittadina di Jasper. Il sentiero ad anello, molto ben segnalato e lungo 4.5 km, conduce a cinque laghi uno più bello (e diverso) dall'altro, che regalano spot fotografici davvero incredibili.
WHAT TO SEE AT JASPER NATIONAL PARK - DAY 1
VALLEY OF FIVE LAKES, ATHABASCA FALLS ANNETTE LAKE
Jasper National Park, whose admission ticket costs $9.80 per person, per day, truly offers an plenty of choice. We started the exploration of the park with the fascinating Valley of Five Lakes, located along the Icefield Parkway, a handful of minutes south of the town of Jasper. The very well-marked, 4.5-mile-long loop trail leads to five lakes-one more beautiful (and different) from the other), providing truly incredible photo spots.
Noi, nonostante la leggera pioggerellina che anche in questa giornata ci è stata per qualche minuto fedele compagna di viaggio, abbiamo apprezzato davvero tantissimo questo percorso che conduce a cinque laghi incantevoli (due grandi, tre più piccoli), ciascuno dei quali con una tonalità diversa di verde ed azzurro, dovute a diversi fattori tra cui la profondità, la composizione delle rocce e la presenza di alghe, sempre decisiva nei laghi alpini.
Despite the light drizzle that even on that day was our faithful companion for a few minutes, we really enjoyed this trail that leads to five enchanting lakes (two large, three smaller), each with a different shade of green and blue, due to several factors including depth, rock composition and the presence of algae, always decisive in alpine lakes.
Il primo tratto del sentiero scorre sostanzialmente nel bosco ed è l'unico che dovrete percorrere due volte, sia all'andata che al ritorno. Al primo bivio consigliamo di tenere la sinistra e percorrere il loop dei cinque laghi in senso orario, in modo tale da raggiungere i laghi nella corretta sequenza numerica.
The first section of the trail basically runs through the forest and is the only one you will have to walk twice, both on the outward and return journeys. At the first fork of the trail, we recommend that you keep to the left and walk the five-lake loop clockwise so that you can reach the lakes in the correct number sequence.
Dovrete salire un pochino per raggiungere il "first lake" (attenzione sempre agli orsi nel periodo estivo) e, subito dopo averlo superato, mantenete la destra al bivio per continuare il loop ed ammirare i successivi laghi. I più belli? Sicuramente il "third lake" ed il "fourth lake".
You'll have to climb a little bit to reach the "first lake" (always watch out for bears in the summertime), and immediately after having overcome them, keep right at the fork to continue the loop and admire the subsequent lakes. The most beautiful ones? Definitely the "third lake" and the "fourth lake."
Lasciata la "Valley of Five Lakes" alle spalle, abbiamo ripreso la Icefield Parkway in direzione sud per una ventina di km, verso le Athabasca Falls, uno degli highlights di una strada che vi racconteremo nel dettaglio in uno dei prossimi post. Arrivare alle Athabasca Falls è molto semplice, basta percorrere il sentiero (adatto davvero a tutti) di 1.5 km che conduce a diverse piattaforme di osservazioni.
Leaving the "Valley of Five Lakes" behind, we resumed the Icefield Parkway heading south for about 20 km to the Athabasca Falls, one of the highlights of a road of which we will talk about in detail in one of the next posts. Getting to Athabasca Falls is very easy: just walks the 1.5 km trail (really suitable for everyone) that leads to several observation platforms.
Ognuno dei quali garantisce una vista davvero unica. Una volta raggiunto un ponticello, sotto cui scorre l'Athabasca River, avrete oltre ad una bellissima vista anche sul Monte Kerkeslin, anche la possibilità di scendere nel canyon ed ammirare sia il fiume che il piccolo canyon da una posizione davvero privilegiata.
Each of which guarantees a truly unique view. Once you reach a small bridge, under which the Athabasca River flows, there's a beautiful view of Mount Kerkeslin as well, but also the opportunity to descend into the canyon and admire both the river and the small canyon from a truly privileged position.
Il consiglio è quello di non continuare circolarmente il sentiero (poco battuto e non semplice da seguire), ma di tornare dalla stessa strada da cui siete venuti.
The advice is not to continue and circumnavigate the canyon (the not very well traveled and not easy to follow), but to return the same way you came.
Il terzo ed ultimo stop di giornata è stato Annette Lake. Per raggiungerlo questa volta dovrete andare a nord di Jasper (e di conseguenza riprendere la Yellowhead Highway) e svoltare a destra lungo la Maligne Lake Road. Qui un'altra deviazione sulla destra conduce a due laghi tanto belli quanto isolati e poco battuti dai turisti: il Annette Lake ed il Edith Lake, uno vicino all'altro.
The third and final stop of the day was Annette Lake. To reach it, this time you will have to go north of Jasper (and consequently get back to the Yellowhead Highway) and turn right along Maligne Lake Road. Here another detour on the right leads to two lakes that are as beautiful as they are isolated and little traveled by tourists: Annette Lake and Edith Lake, one next to the other.
Nonostante questi due laghi anch'essi molto affascinanti, sono stranamente poco considerati dai visitatori, tanto che durante la nostra avventura ad Annette Lake (che abbiamo preferito ad Edith Lake) abbiamo visto parecchia wildlife tra cui probabilmente anche un aquila reale. Il sentiero che costeggia Annette Lake è di 2.4 km ed è un circuito ad anello adatto a tutti e davvero piacevole.
Although those two lakes are very fascinating, they are strangely little regarded by visitors, so much so that during our experience at Annette Lake (which we preferred to Edith Lake) we saw quite a lot of wildlife including probably a golden eagle. The trail along Annette Lake is 2.4 km loop suitable for everyone and really enjoyable.
