Quando abbiamo pensato al Canada come meta del nostro prossimo on the road, beh... c'era un luogo che più di altri aveva stuzzicato la nostra fantasia, ovvero il Banff National Park, il primo Parco Nazionale Canadese e terzo più antico al mondo, e da sempre simbolo naturale del paese della "foglia d'acero". Ormai tutti conosco Banff o quanto meno si sono imbattuti almeno una volta in una splendida foto dei suoi laghi, una notorietà che l'ha reso rispetto a Jasper decisamente più affollato tanto che spesso si deve davvero sgomitare per concedersi un po' di spazio con l'imperiosa natura delle Montagne Rocciose. Però, una volta accettato tutto ciò, si riesce a godere dei panorami probabilmente più belli dell'intero Nord America, partendo da quelli che ci ha regalato la Bow Valley Parkway, con la quale abbiamo scelto di cominciare la visita al parco. Una sorta di antipasto di quello che poi avremmo visto nelle due giornate successive...
When we thought of Canada as a destination for our next on-the-road trip, well ... there was one place that more than others had tickled our immagination, namely Banff National Park, Canada's first National Park and the third oldest in the world, and a longtime naturare symbol of the country of the "maple leaf." By now everyone is familiar with Banff or at least has come across an amazing photo of its lakes at least once, a notoriety that has made it decidedly more crowded compared to Jasper. Once you accept this, however, you'll be able to enjoy probably the most beautiful views in the whole of North America, starting with those that the Bow Valley Parkway gave us. And just think that this road is far from being the most famous part of the Banff National Park...
GLI STOP LUNGO LA BOW VALLEY PARKWAY
La strada principale che attraversa il Banff National Park, da nord a sud (o viceversa) è la Trans Canada Highway, un'autostrada che permette ai viaggiatori di spostarsi comodamente da Lake Louise a Canmore, passando per Banff città. Parallela alla principale scorre la decisamente più scenografica Bow Valley Parkway, che da nord di Banff si spinge sino alle porte di Lake Louise, 48 suggestivi km fatti di ghost town, canyons, cascate e... la curva più famosa del Canada. Già, perchè provenendo da nord, sarà proprio Morant's Curve il primo stop lungo la Bow Valley Parkway, un luogo reso celebre da Nicholas Morant, un fotografo che lavorava per la Canadian Pacific Railway e il National Geographic e che scattò la prima celebre fotografia del treno in corsa lungo questa curva. Dovrete avere molta pazienza (cosa che noi non abbiamo avuto) ed essere anche parecchio fortunati, ma se riuscirete a scattarla al momento giusto... beh, sarà indubbiamente la fotografia del vostro viaggio.
THE STOPS ALONG THE BOW VALLEY PARKWAY
The main road through Banff National Park from north to south (or vice versa) is the Trans Canada Highway, a huge highway that allows travelers to move comfortably from Lake Louise to Canmore via Banff. Running parallel to the main one is the decidedly more scenic Bow Valley Parkway, which runs from north of Banff to the gateway to Lake Louise, 48 striking miles made of ghost towns, canyons, waterfalls and... Canada's most famous curve. That's right, because coming from the north, Morant's Curve will be the first stop along the Bow Valley Parkway, a place made famous by Nicholas Morant, a photographer who worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway and National Geographic and who took the first famous photograph of the train running along this curve. You will need to have a lot of patience (that we didn't have!) and also be pretty lucky, but if you manage to take it at the right time.... well, it will undoubtedly be the photograph of your trip.
Scendendo verso Banff incontrerete Silver City, una delle tante “boom town” lungo il Bow River, ora diventata una ghost town, e poi Moose Meadows, un tempo paradiso dei "moose" (gli enomi alci canadesi) ma ora popolato dagli elk (quelli più piccoli). Ma la grande attrazione della Bow Valley Parkway è sicuramente Johnstone Canyon, un bellissimo canyon formato dal Johnstone Creek (un affluente del bow river) dal quale nascono ben sette cascate che in inverno si ghiacciano completamente creando scenari unici. Quelle che si vedono dal sentiero sono le Lower e le Upper: entrambe seguono il corso del torrente e si snodano lungo vertiginose e scricchiolanti passerelle in bilico nel vuoto.
As you descend toward Banff, vou'll encounter Silver City, one of the many "boom towns" along the Bow River that has now become a ghost town, and then Moose Meadows, once a haven for "moose" (Canadian huge elks) but now populated by elk (smaller ones). But the big attraction of the Bow Valley Parkway is definitely Johnstone Canyon, a beautiful canyon formed by Johnstone Creek (a tributary of the Bow River) from which as many as seven waterfalls rise and completely freeze over in winter, creating unique scenery. The ones seen from the trail are the Lower and Upper: both follow the course of the creek and wind along vertiginous, creaky footbridges poised in the void.

Avendo deciso di dedicare buona parte della giornata a quello che consideriamo essere il più bel canyon visto in Canada, il Johnstone Canyon, abbiamo poi in corso d'opera deciso di percorrere il sentiero più lungo sino a raggiungere le Ink Pots. Ma andiamo con ordine, perchè il percorso che segue l'andamento del canyon consente con il minimo sforzo (2.2 km andata e ritorno) di accedere già alla prima delle due cascate, la lower Falls.
JOHNSTONE CANYON TRAIL & INK POTS TRAIL
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Having decided to spend a good part of the day into the most beautiful canyon we've seen in Canada, Johnstone Canyon, we then chose to take the longer trail that leads to the Ink Pots. But first things first, because the trail that follows the course of the canyon allows with minimal effort (2.2 km round trip) to access the first of the two waterfalls, the lower Falls.
Molti dei visitatori decidono di fermarsi qui, dopo aver seguito il Johnstone Creek per una buona parte ed aver ammirato la suggestiva cascata alta trenta metri. Ma il bello, secondo noi, viene dopo, perchè il tratto centrale del trail conduce alle Upper falls (5.5 km andata e ritorno), cascate alte 10 metri che si possono ammirare da un ponte oppure da più vicino entrando in un passaggio angusto nella roccia.
Many of the visitors decide to stop here, after following Johnstone Creek for a good portion and admiring the striking 30-meter-high waterfall. But the best part, in our opinion, comes later, because the middle section of the trail leads to the Upper falls (5.5 km round trip), 10-meter-high waterfalls that can be admired from a bridge or from closer by entering a narrow passage in the rock.
Giunti alle Upper Falls potrete tornare indietro o proseguire il trail fino alle Ink Pots (11.2 km andata e ritorno), cinque piscine naturali color azzurro chiaro e verde decisamente incontaminate che ripagheranno non solo della fatica (il dislivello è di 330 metri) ma anche del tempo impiegato per percorrere tutto il sentiero (2-4 ore, andata e ritorno). Per buona parte vi troverete nel bosco, almeno sino ad incrociare l'altro sentiero che porta alle Ink Pots, ovvero il Moose Meadows trailhead (l'intersezione è al km 3.2): da qui il sentiero comincerà a salire repentinamente sino a raggiungere le Ink Pots ed un bellissimo prato alpino con il fiume a fare sempre da sfondo.
When at the Upper Falls you can turn back or continue the trail to the Ink Pots (11.2 km round trip), five decidedly pristine pale blue and green natural pools that will repay not only the effort (the elevation gain is 330 meters) but also the time it takes to walk the entire trail (2-4 hours, round trip). You'll spend much of the time in the woods, at least until you cross the other trail leading to the Ink Pots, namely the Moose Meadows trailhead (the intersection is at km 3.2): from here the trail will begin to climb abruptly until the Ink Pots and a beautiful alpine meadow with the river always in the background.
L'INCURSIONE AL KOOTENAY NATIONAL PARK - LE PAINT POTS
A metà strada tra Lake Louise e Banff, una deviazione lungo la Banff Windermere Highway permette di rientrare nella British Columbia e conduce al probabilmente meno famoso dei parchi nazionali canadesi delle Montagne Roccione ma non per questo meno affascinante. La parte finale della giornata abbiamo voluto spenderla proprio qui, al Kootenay National Park che dal 1920 è un luogo di contrasti unici, dai fiumi ghiacciati alle sorgenti calde di vapore. E' un dato di fatto che i parchi nazionali delle montagne rocciose che sorgono nel territorio della British Columbia siano decisamente meno noti di quelli dell'Alberta (Banff e Jasper su tutti), ma se siete alla ricerca di un po' di tranquillità, non andate tanto lontano dal Kootenay e dai suoi 1406 km2 di natura incontaminata...
THE RAID INTO KOOTENAY NATIONAL PARK - THE PAINT POTS
Halfway between Lake Louise and Banff, a detour along the Banff Windermere Highway allows us to re-enter British Columbia and leads to the probably least famous of Canada's Rocky Mountain national parks but no less fascinating. We want to spend the final part of the day it right here, at Kootenay National Park, which since 1920 has been a place of unique contrasts, from frozen rivers to hot steam springs. It is a fact that the Rocky Mountain National Parks that lie in British Columbia's territory are decidedly less well known than those in Alberta (Banff and Jasper above all), but if you are looking for a bit of tranquility, don't go that far from the Kootenay and its 1406 square kilometers of unspoiled nature...
Provenendo da Banff, potrete fermarvi allo Stanley Glacier e percorrere il sentiero di 6.8 miglia fino al ghiacciaio, o ancora camminare lungo il loop di 2 km del Firewood Loop trail, visitare il Marble Canyon (trail di 1.6 km) o ammirare l'Olive Lake. Ma l'attrazione secondo noi principale (e sicuramente una diversità rispetto ai soliti panorami alpini) sono le Paint Pots, situate nel cuore del Parco Nazionale, 86 km a nord di Radium Hot Springs. Il sentiero è lungo solamente 2 km e, dopo aver superato il ponte sul Kootenay River, conduce alle vere proprie Paint Pots (pozze di pittura).
Coming from Banff, you can stop at Stanley Glacier and hike the 6.8-mile trail to the glacier, or hike the 2-mile of the Firewood Loop trail, visit Marble Canyon (1.6-mile trail) or admire Olive Lake. But the main attraction in our opinion (and certainly a diversity from the usual alpine vistas) are the Paint Pots, located in the heart of the National Park, 86 km north of Radium Hot Springs. The trail is only 2 km long and, after crossing the bridge over the Kootenay River, leads to the actual Paint Pots.
I pannelli esplicativi raccontano sia la storia dell’estrazione mineraria in questa terra che ha il colore della ruggine, sia l’importanza che ebbe in passato per i nativi, mentre ammirerete questo spettacolare fenomeno naturale: tre stagni quasi circolari pieni di ossido di ferro arancione rossastro che le Prime Nazioni credevano provenissero dagli spiriti animali che vivevano negli stagni stessi.
Explanatory panels tell both the history of mining in this rust-colored land and the past importance for the natives as you marvel at this spectacular natural phenomenon: three almost circular ponds filled with reddish orange iron oxide that First Nations believed came from the animal spirits that lived in the that ponds.
