La seconda giornata nel Parco Nazionale di Banff è "la giornata" per eccellenza. Già, perchè in un colpo solo finalmente visiteremo quelli che a tutti gli effetti sono due tra i laghi più famosi al mondo, il Lake Louise ed il Moraine Lake. Due spettacoli della natura che non hanno bisogno di presentazioni e che richiamano ogni anno milioni e milioni di visitatori. Anche nel post covid, anche nella prima estate di riapertura dei confini (2022) da parte del governo canadese. L'area è quella che fa capo alla piccola località montana di Lake Louise, famosa per il lago appunto, per il suo enorme chateau che svetta quasi come le montagne circostanti, per le sale da thè e per la coppa del mondo femminile di sci che ogni anno fa tappa da queste parti.
The second day in Banff National Park is the day par excellence. Yes, because in one fell swoop we finally visit what are two of the most famous lakes in the world, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Two spectacles of nature that need no introduction and draw millions and millions of visitors each year. Even in the post covid era, even in the first summer of border reopening (2022) by the Canadian government. The main town of this area is Lake Louise, famous for the lake itself, for its huge chateau that towers almost as high as the surrounding mountains, for its tea houses, and for the women's ski world cup stage that is held here here every year.
Prima di raccontarvi nel dettaglio di Lake Louise e del bellissimo trail che non senza fatica conduce al Big Beehive, dobbiamo però tornare al mese di aprile, qualche mese prima della nostra partenza per il Canada. Perchè quando si decide di visitare Banff National Park ed in particolare la già menzionata affollatissima area di Lake Louise, occorre assolutamente programmare con larghissimo anticipo. Il rischio è, infatti, addirittura quello di non riuscire ad accedere ad entrambi i laghi in quanto i già piccoli parcheggi si riempiono alle prime luci dell'alba. Anzi, a dirla tutta, se volete essere sicuri di trovare uno "spot" nei due parcheggi dovrete recarvi intorno alle 3 del mattino. Per questo motivo Parks Canada da ormai qualche anno ha messo a disposizione un servizio navetta per entrambi i laghi (Lake Louise e Moraine Lake) a disposizione di tutti i visitatori a partire dai primi di maggio sino alla conclusione di ottobre. Occorre acquistare il proprio posto sul bus navetta sul sito https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/parkbus/louise e selezionare il lago che più vi interessa.
Before telling you in detail about Lake Louise and the beautiful trail that not without effort leads to the Big Beehive, however, we need to go back to April, a few months before our departure for Canada. Because when you decide to visit Banff National Park and in particular the aforementioned crowded Lake Louise area, you absolutely must plan well in advance. If you don't do that, you may not be able to access both lakes as the small parking lots fill up at the crack of dawn. Indeed, to be honest, if you want to be sure of finding a spo" in the two parking lots you will have to go there around 3 a.m. That is why Parks Canada has for some years now provided a shuttle bus service to both lakes (Lake Louise and Moraine Lake) available to all visitors from early May until the end of October. You must purchase your seat on the shuttle bus at https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/parkbus/louise and select the lake you want to visit.
Il consiglio è ovviamente quello di visitarli entrambi nella stessa giornata, in modo tale da usufruire del servizio navetta che collega anche entrambi i laghi. Dove si prende la navetta per lake Louise e Moraine Lake? Abbiamo sperimentato sulla nostra pelle come l'accesso ai laghi sia molto ben gestito dal Banff National Park. Vi basterà recarvi nell'enorme parcheggio (ci sono tantissime indicazioni a riguardo) del Lake Louise Ski Resort (1 Whitehorn Rd, Lake Louise). ricevere il pass giornaliero (che avrete acquistato online) e scegliere la navetta che fa per voi. Lo spettacolo comincia qui...
The advice, of course, is to visit both on the same day so that you can take advantage of the shuttle service that also connects both lakes. Where do you take the shuttle to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake? We experienced firsthand how access to the lakes is very well managed by Banff National Park. All you have to do is go to the huge parking lot (there are plenty of signs about it) located at Lake Louise Ski Resort (1 Whitehorn Rd, Lake Louise). receive your day pass (purchased online) and choose the shuttle that suits you. Già, perchè di spettacolo si tratta. Lake Louise è un qualcosa di davvero meraviglioso. Potrete vivere il lago, infatti, in tanti modi. C'è chi scatterà solamente una foto dalla scenografica ma affollatissima punta del lago dove si trova anche il Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, seguire il corso del lago percorrendo un bellissimo loop, noleggiare una canoa oppure (ed è l'opzione clamorosamente più bella) spingersi sino alla famosissima Tea House, al Big Beehive (11.5 km) o ancora sino al Plain of Six Glaciers (14.5 km). Noi ci siamo spinti fino al Big Beehive per ammirare dall'alto il Lake Louise e sia il percorso che la vista finale è stato un qualcosa di davvero incredibile.
Yeas, because that place is just amazing. Lake Louise is something truly wonderful. You can experience the lake, in fact, in so many ways. There are those who only take a photo from the scenic but very crowded tip of the lake where the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise stands, people who follow the course of the lake along a beautiful loop, rent a canoe or (and this is the resoundingly coolest option) go as far as the world-famous Tea House, the Big Beehive (11.5 km) or even as far as the Plain of Six Glaciers (14.5 km). We went as far as the Big Beehive to admire Lake Louise from above, and both the trail and the final view was something truly incredible.

Se decideste di intraprendere questa avventura dovrete costeggiare, partendo dallo Chateau, il Lake Louise per qualche metro prima di addentrarvi nel bosco dove il sentiero (sempre affollato) inizierà subito a salire. Non fatevi spaventare dal dislivello (circa 700 metri se vi spingerete fino al Big Beehive) e neppure dalla distanza, perchè raggiungere almeno la Tea House non è così difficile. Per semplificare (ed aiutarvi) abbiamo deciso di dividere il sentiero in tre piccoli trail, così che anche voi possiate darvi degli obiettivi durante la vostra visita e fermarvi quando vi sentirete troppo stanchi.
LAKE LOUISE TO BIG BEEHIVE - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
ABOUT THE MOST FAMOUS TRAIL IN BANFF NATIONAL PARK
If you decide to embark on this adventure, you will have to skirt, starting from the Chateau, Lake Louise for a few yards before entering the woods where the trail (always crowded) immediately begin to climb. Do not be frightened by the elevation gain (about 700 meters if you go as far as the Big Beehive) or even by the distance, because reaching at least the Tea House is not that difficult. To simplify (and help you) we decided to divide the trail into three small trails, so that you too can give yourself goals during your visit and stop when you feel too tired.
Il primo step è Mirror Lake, situato al km 2.7. Questo tratto di sentiero, sempre in salita ma mai con pendenze impegnative, offre diversi tornanti che vi permetteranno di intravedere Lake Louise sempre più dall'alto mentre si sale. Il lago è carino, ma nulla in confronto a quello che vi aspetterà dopo.
The first step is Mirror Lake, located at km 2.7. This section of trail, always uphill but never too steep, offers several switchbacks that allows hikers to glimpse Lake Louise more and more from above as you ascend. The lake is pretty, but nothing compared to what awaits you next.
Ad attendervi, infatti, al km 3.5 c'è una piccola cascata, qualche gradino... e lo scenografico Agnes Lake. Al suo fianco la famosissima Tea House, dove non c'è acqua corrente né elettricità. E dove i rifornimenti arrivano in elicottero all'inizio della stagione e poi portati dallo stesso personale che ogni giorno porta il cibo fresco alla struttura percorrendo a piedi i 3.5 km del sentiero. Gustarsi qui un thè alla banana, una cioccolata, o uno dei tanti dolci ha un sapore davvero speciale. L'originale Tea house fu addirittura costruita all'inizio del 1900, l'attuale nel 1981.
At 3.5 km, there's a small waterfall, a few steps... and scenic Agnes Lake waiting for you. Next to it, there's the world-famous Tea House, where there is no running water or electricity. And where supplies arrive by helicopter at the beginning of the season and then carried by the staff who bring fresh food to the facility each day by walking the 3.5 km that separate Lake Louise and the Tea House. Enjoying a banana tea, chocolate, or one of the many desserts here has a very special flavor. The original Tea house was even built in the early 1900s, the current one in 1981.
Preparatevi ad una lunghissima coda prima di ricevere la vostra ordinazione, perchè sono tantissimi quelli che si spingono fino qui. La musica cambia invece da qui in avanti, perchè quasi tutti i visitatori, dopo essersi rifocillati, decidono di scendere a valle. In pochi effettuano il loop del Lake Agnes, che prende il nome da Lady Susan Agnes Macdonald, moglie del primo primo ministro canadese John A. Macdonald sul finire del 1800. Il giro intorno al lago è lungo circa 2.3 km, che andranno aggiunti ai 3.5 km che avrete già percorso per arrivare al lago ed alla Tea House ed a quelli che dovrete compiere per tornare allo Chateau.
Be prepared for a very long queue before you get your order, because there are so many people who go this far. However, everything changes from here on, because almost all visitors, after refreshments, decide to descend to the valley. A few make the Lake Agnes loop trail, named after Lady Susan Agnes Macdonald, wife of Canada's first prime minister John A. Macdonald in the late 1800s. The loop around the lake is about 2.3 km long: they have to be added to the 3.5 km you've already hiked to get to the lake and the Tea House and to the 3.5 km you will have to mhike to get back to the Chateau.
Il consiglio è, una volta giunti alla Tea House, di costeggiare il Lake Agnes (sulla destra) e poi spingersi su fino al Big Beehive. Non ve ne pentirete. Vi accorgerete già dopo aver iniziato a costeggiare il lago che lo scenario è decisamente cambiato. Ora c'è pochissima vegetazione, le montagne svettano ed anche in estate potreste trovare la neve.
Once you get to the Tea House, our suggestion is to skirt Lake Agnes (on the right) and then pushed up to the Big Beehive. You will not regret it. You immediately notice while skirting the lake that the scenery has definitely changed. There is now very little vegetation, the mountains soar and even in summer you may find snow.
Una volta aggirato il lago, il sentiero si inerpica con una salita a tornanti (ne abbiamo contati più di dieci!) davvero tosta e molto ripida. Una volta in cima, proseguite per qualche decina di metri sino a raggiungere il rinomato Big Beehive.
Once bypassing the lake, the trail climbs with a hairpin climb (we counted more than ten!) that is really tough and very steep. Once at the top, continue for a few dozen meters until you reach the renowned Big Beehive.
Molte delle più iconiche foto di Lake Louise sono state scattate qui, con il lago, azzurrissimo, proprio sotto di voi. Uno spettacolo davvero incredibile, perchè il colore è talmente vivo ed uniforme che sembra essere vernice.
Many of the most iconic photos of Lake Louise were taken here, with the lake, bluish, right below the photographer. A truly amazing sight, because the color is so vivid and uniform that it looks like paint.
Se vi sarete spinti sino al Big Beehive, i km diventeranno 5.5, 11 considerando anche la discesa verso il lago. Dal Big Beehive, volendo, inizia anche l'ultimo tratto di sentiero, quello che conduce al Plan de Six Glaciers. Qui ci si immerge nel vero e proprio ghiacciaio, portando il percorso a 13.6 km in totale tra andata e ritorno.
If you have gone as far as the Big Beehive, you've hiked 5.5 km, 11 km considering also the descent to the lake. From the Big Beehive, if you wish, you can hike the last section of the trail, the one that leads to Plan de Six Glaciers. Here you plunge into the actual glacier, and the trail is 13.6 km long (round trip).
Una volta scesi a valle, il servizio navetta (ricordatevi sempre di acquistare il ticket online) consente con un viaggio di un buon quarto d'ora nel cuore della valle dei ten peaks, la valle delle 10 vette, di raggiungere l'altro capolavoro dell'area di Lake Louise, il Moraine Lake, forse il lago più bello al mondo.
Once down in the valley, the shuttle service (always remember to buy your ticket online), with a quarter-hour ride through the heart of the ten peaks valley, allow visitors to reach the other masterpiece of the Lake Louise area, Moraine Lake, perhaps the most beautiful lake in the world.
Il problema è che ci arriviamo davvero stanchi e provati dalle fatiche del Big Beehive e, complici le tantissime persone che lo visitano, non riusciamo a godercelo appieno. Nonostante ciò, Moraine Lake rimane un vero e proprio capolavoro di madre natura, così splendido da comparire anche nelle banconote da venti dollari canadesi emesse tra il 1969 ed il 1979.
The problem is that we got there really tired and exhausted from the efforts of the Big Beehive trail, and, also because of the large number of people visiting, we were unable to enjoy it fully. Nevertheless, Moraine Lake remains a true masterpiece of Mother Nature, so splendid that it even appeared on the Canadian twenty-dollar bills issued between 1969 and 1979.
Anche qui potrete seguire un sentiero circolare di 2.9 che vi permetterà di ammirare il lago da diverse posizioni, ma la maggior parte dei visitatori completa un breve trail in leggera salita, il Rockpile Trail (1.4 km) per godere di una vista magnifica.
Here, too, you can follow a 2.9 loop trail that allows you to admire the lake from different positions, but most visitors complete a short, slightly uphill trail, the Rockpile Trail (1.4 km) for magnificent views.
BANFF, LA "GATE TOWN" DEL PARCO NAZIONALE
O ti piace, o non ti piace. Di certo Banff non può lasciarti indifferente. Già, perchè la principale "Gate Town" del Parco Nazionale di Banff di certo non sarà apprezzata dai puristi dei parchi nazionali, ma di certo gode di un fascino non indifferente. Fondata nel primo decennio dell’800 come località turistica, Banff scoprì in brevissimo tempo di essere decisamente più di una semplice e carina cittadina di montagna. In poco tempo arrivò la rete ferroviaria, si scoprirono le sorgenti termali e, dopo che fu raggiunta dalla rete stradale (1911) divenne il luogo di montagna per eccellenza in Canada.
BANFF, THE NATIONAL PARK'S GATE TOWN
Either you like it or you do not like it. Banff certainly can't leave you indifferent. That's right, because Banff National Park's main gate town certainly won't be appreciated by national park purists, but it certainly has a charm. Founded in the first decade of the 1800s as a resort town, Banff discovered in a very short time that it was definitely more than just a cute little mountain town. In a short time the railroad was built, hot springs were discovered and when finally was reached by the road network (1911).... it just became the quintessential mountain resort in Canada.
Eppure vivere qui non è affatto facile, perchè tutta la città fa parte del Parco Nazionale ed appartiene quindi al governo federale: solo chi lavora a Banff può ottenere la residenza e tutti quelli che gestiscono un'attività imprenditoriale ha l'obbligo di procurare un alloggio per i propri dipendenti. No, Banff non è una cittadina come le altre...
Yet living here is not easy at all, because the whole town is part of the National Park and thus belongs to the federal government: only those who work in Banff can obtain residency, and everyone who runs a business has an obligation to provide housing for their employees. No, Banff is not just another small town....
Consigliamo di cominciare la visita di Banff dal Cascade of Time Gardens, una piccola oasi a meno di 1 km da downtown. L'ingresso a questi bellissimi giardini è gratuito e passeggiare tra i suoi alberi e le sue aiuole è decisamente interessante. Poi attraversate il Bow River e dirigetevi verso downtown: la via principale, pedonale, è ricca di negozi di souvenir, di ristoranti e di locali. Il posto perfetto per rilassarsi dopo una giornata spesa tra le montagne del parco nazionale.
We recommend starting your visit to Banff from the Cascade of Time Gardens, a small oasis less than 1 km far from downtown. Admission to these beautiful gardens is free, and walking among its trees and flower beds is definitely interesting. Then cross the Bow River and head downtown: the pedestrian-friendly main street is full of souvenir stores, restaurants, and clubs. The perfect place to relax after a day spent in the mountains of the national park.
Non lontano da downtown, potrete visitare anche le Bow Falls, raggiungibili percorrendo il Bow River Trail, un sentiero che costeggia per tutta la città di Banff il Bow River, oppure dirigetevi verso il Marsh Loop Trail (2.3 km, loop trail), l'unica zona paludosa del Banff National Park. Qui potrete ammirare farfalle, libellule e fiori di campo. Se non ne avete ancora abbastanza prendete l'auto e percorrete la Vermillion lakes Road per ammirare i Vermillion Lakes. Questo è uno dei migliori spot in inverno per vedere l'aurora boreale...
Not far from downtown, you can also visit Bow Falls, which can be reached by taking the Bow River Trail, a trail that runs along the Bow River throughout the city of Banff, or head to the Marsh Loop Trail (2.3 km, loop trail), the only marshy area in Banff National Park. Here you can see butterflies, dragonflies and wildflowers. If you still do not have enough, take your car and drive down Vermillion lakes Road to admire Vermillion Lakes. This is one of the best spots in winter to see the Northern Lights....
