Quando qualcuno vi dirà che neppure una settimana è sufficiente per visitare ed esplorare ogni angolo di questa parte delle "Rockies" canadesi... beh, non ha solo ragione. Ne ha da vendere. Ovunque ti giri c'è un parco nazionale oppure un parco provinciale, anche se come abbiamo già ampiamente detto a dominare sono sempre Banff e Jasper National Park. Eppure c'è molto altro, come ad esempio Kootenay di cui abbiamo parlato nei precedenti post e poi c'è lui, il gioiellino, il più piccolo (solo 1313 km quadrati), una sorta di diamante grezzo, lo Yoho National Park. Già, perchè qui la natura è ancor di più al comando e l'uomo fortunatamente se n'è stato in disparte...
When someone tells you that even one week is not enough time to visit and explore every corner of this part of the Canadian "Rockies"... well, this person is not only right. He is off the charts. Everywhere you turn, there is either a national park or a provincial park, although, as we have already extensively mentioned, it is always Banff and Jasper National Park the highlights of the area. Yet there is much more, such as Kootenay which we have mentioned in previous posts, and then there is a little gem, the smallest (only 1313 square kilometers), a kind of diamond in the rough, Yoho National Park. That's right, because here nature is even more in charge and man has fortunately stood aside....
Che Yoho sia speciale anche se poco attrezzato a livello turistico ve ne accorgerete subito, percorrendo la Trans-Canada Highway che da Lake Louise conduce a Field, l'unica piccola "gate town" del parco. Questa minuscola cittadina di poco meno di 300 anime era un tempo un deposito di locomotive della ferrovia Canadese alla fine del secolo scorso, ed è rimasta con il passare degli anni l'unico baluardo di civiltà dell'intero parco nazionale.
You will soon realize that Yoho is special even if undeveloped for tourism. How? Just driving along the Trans-Canada Highway from Lake Louise to Field, the park's only small gate town. This tiny town of just under 300 inhabitants was once a Canadian Railroad locomotive depot at the turn of the last century, and has remained through the years the only bastion of civilization in the entire national park.
E' un luogo davvero pittoresco, con l'unico minimarket della cittadina, Yoho Brothers Trading Post (lo si nota tranquillamente dalla Trans-Canada Highway) che di fatto è l'unica possibilità di bere un caffè o mangiare un boccone, eccezion fatta per il cafè situato a ridosso di Emerald Lake. Oltre ai laghi ed alle montagne (sono ben 28 le cime del parco), l'area è anche particolarmente famosa per il Burgess Shale Fossil Beds, un sito archeologico patrimonio Unesco all'interno del quale sono molto ben conservati resti di fossili di animali di più di 500 milioni di anni fa.
It is a truly picturesque place, with the town's only convenience store, Yoho Brothers Trading Post (you can notice it directly from the Trans-Canada Highway) that is the only option for a coffee or a bite to eat, except for the café located at the Emerald Lake. In addition to the lakes and mountains (there are as many as 28 peaks in the park), the area is also particularly famous for the Burgess Shale Fossil Beds, a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site within which fossil remains of animals more than 500 million years old are very well preserved.
Noi invece, prima di dirigerci nel cuore del parco, proseguiamo per qualche chilometro lungo la Trans-Canada Highway sino a raggiungere il parcheggio delle Wapta Falls. E' una piccola deviazione sulla sinistra (provenendo da Lake Louise) lungo una sterrata che in due chilometri conduce al "parking lot".
We are heading into the heart of the park. So we continue a few miles along the Trans-Canada Highway until we reach the Wapta Falls parking lot. It is a small detour to the left (coming from Lake Louise) along a dirt road that in two kilometers leads to the parking lot.
Il sentiero che conduce alle cascate è lungo 2.4 km (4.8 considerando il ritorno) ed è con tutta onestà il sentiero dove abbiam trovato il maggior numero di zanzare di tutto il viaggio. Intendiamoci, questi fastidiosi insetti sono stati nostri fedeli compagni di viaggio per buona parte del tragitto, ma si sono decisamente superati nella parte iniziale e centrale del trail, che corre in maniera lineare nel cuore del bosco.
The trail leading to the falls is 2.4 km long (4.8 outback) and is quite honestly the trail where we found the most mosquitoes of the entire trip. Mind you, these pesky insects were our faithful companions for much of the way, but they definitely outdid themselves in the early and middle parts of the trail, which runs straight through the heart of the forest.
La Wapta Falls, alta 30 metri e larga ben 150, è di fatto la cascata principale del fiume Kicking Horse ed il suo flusso medio può raggiungere anche i 254 metri cubi al secondo. Una volta raggiunto il primo view point (vedrete le cascate di lato), potrete continuare il percorso che in circa cinque minuti consente di scendere sino alla base della cascata. Il nostro consiglio è proprio quello di scendere perchè la visuale da questa posizione è decisamente più suggestiva.
Wapta Falls, 30 meters high and a full 150 meters wide, is actually the main waterfall of the Kicking Horse River and its average flow can reach as high as 254 cubic meters per second. Once you reach the first viewpoint (you will see the falls from the side), you can continue on the path that in about five minutes allows hikers to descend to the base of the waterfall. Our advice is just to go down because the view from this position is definitely more impressive.
Tornati sulla Trans-Canada Highway, imbocchiamo la Emerald Lake Road, la vera grande attrazione del Yoho National Park, una strada lunga 10 km che conduce al gioiellino del parco, l'Emerald Lake. Prima però ci fermiamo ad ammirare il Natural Bridge, una sorta di ponte fatto di roccia formatosi nel corso dei secoli grazie all’erosione dell’acqua del fiume capace di scavare un canale nella pietra.
EMERALD LAKE, IL LAGO PERFETTO DOVE NOLEGGIARE LA CANOA
Yoho National Park può contare su ben 61, dicasi 61, laghi, ma nulla batte l'Emerald Lake, di gran lunga il più affascinante di tutti. L'unico capace di reggere il confronto è Lake O'Hara, ma per poterlo visitare in estate occorre vincere una difficilissima lotteria che noi ovviamente siamo andati ben lontani dall'essere estratti. Poco male, perchè Emerald Lake vale da solo il prezzo del biglietto, grazie allo splendido colore delle sue acque turchesi e per la possibilità di fare uno scenografico giro in canoa al costo di 70 dollari (la canoa contiene fino a 3 persone).
Back on the Trans-Canada Highway, we take Emerald Lake Road, the real big attraction of Yoho National Park, a 10-kilometer-long road that leads to the park's jewel, Emerald Lake. First, however, we stop to admire the Natural Bridge, a kind of bridge made of rock formed over centuries by the erosion of river water capable of carving a channel in the stone.
EMERALD LAKE, THE PERFECT LAKE WHERE TO RENT A CANOE
Yoho National Park can count on no less than 61 lakes, but nothing beats Emerald Lake, by far the most fascinating of them all. The only one that can hold a candle to it is Lake O'Hara, but if you wish to visit it in the summer you have to win a very difficult lottery, which we didn't. Of course.. No matter, because Emerald Lake alone is worth the trip, thanks to the splendid color of its turquoise waters and the opportunity to take a scenic canoe ride at a cost of $70 (the canoe holds up to 3 people).
Il nostro consiglio è proprio di sfruttare questo lago, decisamente meno affollato dei più famosi Lake Louise e Moraine Lake (soprattutto al mattino e nel tardo pomeriggio) per noleggiare la canoa e godersi per un'ora un panorama con pochissimi eguali.
Our advice is just to take advantage of this lake, which is definitely less crowded than the more famous Lake Louise and Moraine Lake (especially in the morning and late afternoon) to rent a canoe for an hour and enjoy a view with very few equals.
E pensate che Emerald Lake fu scoperto per sbaglio. nel lontano 1882, dalla guida alpina Tom Wilson quando prese alcuni cavalli feriti e attraversò il lago per sbaglio. Adesso il lago, con il suo lodge ed il suo cafè è diventato l'icona del parco nazionale di Yoho, un paradiso anche per coloro i quali volessero camminare all'aria aperta.
And to think that Emerald Lake was discovered by accident. back in 1882, by mountain guide Tom Wilson when he took some wounded horses and crossed the lake by mistake. Now the lake, with its lodge and café, has become the icon of Yoho National Park, a paradise also for those who would like to walk in the open air.
Lo scenografico sentiero di 5.2 km intorno al lago, è infatti, uno dei più gettonati dell'intero National Park.
The scenic 5.2-kilometer trail around the lake, is in fact, one of the most popular in the entire National Park.
Il Parco Nazionale di Yoho è però attraversato anche da un'altra scenic road, la Yoho Valley Road (chiusa da ottobre a giugno) che ha come meta finale le splendide Takakkaw Falls. Potrete però effettuare altri stop lungo questi scenografici 13.7 km, che attraversano una valle profonda e offrono splendide viste su cime montuose, ghiacciai, cascate e fiumi. Su tutti lo Spiral Tunnel Lookout, due gallerie a spirale scavate all'inizio del ventesimo secolo che consentivano (e consentono tuttora) ai treni di superare un brusco dislivello. E poi il Meeting of the Valley viewpoint, il luogo esatto dove le acque dei fiumi Yoho e Kicking Horse s'incontrano. Ma chi viene da queste parti lo fa anche e soprattutto per le Takakkaw Falls, l’ultimo stop lungo la Yoho Valley Road. Parliamo di una delle cascate più grandi dell'intero Canada, raggiungibili con un sentiero di circa 2.5 km che nell'ultima parte vi obbligherà a bagnarvi e non poco se voleste arrivare fin sotto alle cascate.
However, Yoho National Park is also traversed by another scenic road, the Yoho Valley Road (closed from October to June), which has as its final destination the beautiful Takakkaw Falls. You can, however, make other stops along these scenic 13.7 km, which traverse a deep valley and offer splendid views of mountain peaks, glaciers, waterfalls and rivers. For example the Spiral Tunnel Lookout, two spiral tunnels dug in the early 20th century that allowed (and still allow) trains to overcome an abrupt drop. And then the Meeting of the Valley viewpoint, the exact spot where the waters of the Yoho and Kicking Horse rivers meet. But those who drive the Yoho Valley Road certainly want to visit the amazing Takakkaw Falls, the last stop along the road. We are talking about one of the largest waterfalls in the whole of Canada, reachable by a path of about 2.5 km that in the last part forces visitors to get wet if they want to get all the way below the falls.
Le Takakkaw falls, alte 254 metri, sono indubbiamente tra le più belle del Canada e sono anche la base del famosissimo sentiero escursionistico "Iceline", un percorso di 20 km molto bello che inizia proprio dal parcheggio delle Takakkaw falls. Ah il nome Takakkaw in lingua indigena significa "è meraviglioso". E come dargli torto?
The 254-meter-high Takakkaw falls are undoubtedly among the most beautiful in Canada and are also the base of the very famous "Iceline" hiking trail, a very beautiful 20-kilometer route that starts right from the Takakkaw falls parking lot. Oh, the name Takakkaw in the indigenous language means "it is wonderful." And how can you blame them?
