Dopo oltre dieci giorni a girovagare tra le montagne della British Columbia e dell'Alberta, sentiamo per la prima volta il profumo di una grande città, distante ormai poco meno di 200 km. Dopo Vancouver, infatti, è il momento di visitare Calgary, la città olimpica per eccellenza del Canada, ma non prima di aver percorso l'ultimo tratto nelle "Rockies", quello che separa Calgary appunto con Canmore. E, per rendere più eccitante questa tappa, abbiamo deciso di avventurarci anche se solo per qualche ora nella Kananaskis Country, una terra ancor più selvaggia di quella che fino ad ora ci eravamo trovati di fronte visitando prima Jasper National Park e poi Banff National Park. La “O-K country” offre, infatti, gli stessi panorami ma senza le orde di turisti...
After more than ten days wandering through the mountains of British Columbia and Alberta, we feel for the first time the scent of a big city, now just under 200 km away. After Vancouver, in fact, it's now time to visit Calgary, Canada's quintessential Olympic city, but not before driving the last stretch in the "Rockies," the one that separates Canmore. and Clagary. And, to make this stop more exciting, we decided to venture (even if just for a few hours) into Kananaskis Country, a land even wilder than the one we had so far encountered by visiting first Jasper National Park and then Banff National Park. The "O-K country" offers, in fact, the same views but without the hordes of tourists...
L'ingresso alla Kananaskis Country è segnato dal Canmore Nordic Center (ed il vicino Rundle Forebay Reservoir), la casa degli sport invernali canadesi, in particolare del biathlon. E' qui che ci si ferma e, tramite le casse automatiche, si ottiene il ticket per affrontare la strada sterrata 742, conosciuta anche come Smith Dorrien Spray Trail o Three Sisters Parkway, oltre 60 polverosi km dove la natura regna indisturbata. E dove sarà piuttosto semplice incontrare la fauna selvatica del luogo.
The entrance to Kananaskis Country is marked by the Canmore Nordic Center (and nearby Rundle Forebay Reservoir), the home of Canadian winter sports, particularly biathlon. That's where you stop and, via the automated ticket machines, get your ticket to travel and visit the dirt road number 742, also known as the Smith Dorrien Spray Trail or Three Sisters Parkway, more than 60 dusty kilometers where nature reigns undisturbed. And where visitors will certainly encounter wildlife.
Nel nostro piano di viaggio il primo stop sarebbe stato anche il più affascinante, giusto una manciata di km dopo aver intrapreso la Three Sisters Parkway, ovvero il bellissimo Grassi Lakes. Tuttavia, complici lavori di ristrutturazione programmati per tutta la durata del 2022, non abbiamo potuto percorrere il trail che conduce al lago, uno dei più belli della Kananaskis Country. Il percorso verso i due laghi (4.3 km) è un sentiero ad anello che consente al visitatore di scegliere anche la difficoltà dello stesso. Da una parte il percorso facile (Upper Lake), dall'altra quello più impegnativo (Grassi Lakes interpretive) che porta prima ad un view point su una cascata e poi a due laghi, che si possono percorrere in gran parte, sono trasparenti, ed hanno un colore accesissimo, davvero splendido. Un fantastico punto d'arrivo per una bella passeggiata. Il più difficile dei sentieri rimane chiuso durante i mesi invernali a causa del ghiaccio che si forma sul percorso.
In our travel plan, the first stop would have been the most fascinating, just a handful of miles after entering the Three Sisters Parkway: the amazing Grassi Lakes. However, aided by scheduled renovations throughout 2022, we were unable to hike the trail to the lake, one of the most beautiful in Kananaskis Country. The trail to the two lakes (4.3 km) is a loop trail that also allows visitors to choose the difficulty of the path. On one side there's s the easy trail (Upper Lake), and on the other side there's the more challenging trail (Grassi Lakes interpretive) that leads first to a viewpoint on a waterfall and then to the lake. The two lakes, most of which can be hiked, are beautifully transparent. A fantastic end point for a beautiful hike. The most difficult trail remains closed during the winter months due to ice forming on the trail.

Poco male, in ogni caso, perchè il resto della Three Sisters Parkway (che a questo punto è diventata l'highlight di giornata) non ha deluso le attese. Abbiamo incontrato orsi e capre selvatiche e per qualche ora ci siamo sentiti dei pionieri. Eravamo, infatti, solo noi, una strada polverosa, fiumi, laghi, montagne e tanta wildlife. L'uomo qui non si è proprio spinto...
But not bad, in any case, because the rest of the Three Sisters Parkway (which has become the highlight of the day) did not disappoint expectations. We encountered bears and wild goats, and for a few hours we felt like pioneers. It was, in fact, just us, a dusty road, rivers, lakes, mountains and lots of wildlife. Man hasn't really pushed himself here....
GLI STOP LUNGO NELLA KANANASKIS COUNTRY
Percorrendo i 60 km della Three Sisters Parkway e poi i 40 circa della Kananaskis Trail (per completare il loop e tornare verso Canmore o in alternativa Calgary) non mancano le attrazioni. Da quelle ben visibili lungo la strada a quelle più nascoste. Ecco gli stop che vi consigliamo di effettuare durante questo viaggio di 3-4 ore nel cuore della Kananaskis Country. I dati sui km che vi indicheremo prendono come riferimento (e dunque come base di partenza il Canmore Nordic Center).
WHAT TO SEE IN KANANASKIS COUNTRY
Traveling the 60 kilometers of the Three Sisters Parkway and then the 40 or so of the Kananaskis Trail (to complete the loop and return toward Canmore or alternatively Calgary) there is no shortage of attractions. From those clearly visible along the way to those hidden. Here are the stops we recommend during this 3-4 hour journey into the heart of Kananaskis Country. The mileage we give you take the Canmore Nordic Center as a reference and starting point.

Wedge Pond è una bellissima oasi con annesso breve percorso di 1 km lungo la Kananskis Trail (strada numero 40)
- Mount lorette Ponds trail (1.1 km)
Il Monte Lorette e Mary Barklay's Mountain fanno da sfondo a questi ponds fotogenici. Sul lato est della Kananaskis Trail si trovano gli stagni creati dal deflusso dai laghi principali, raggiungibili con un brevissimo sentiero circolare che consigliamo di percorrere in senso antiorario sino all'observation deck.

Wedge Pond is a beautiful oasis with an attached short 1 km trail along the Kananskis Trail (road number 40)
- Mount lorette Ponds trail (1.1 km)
Mount Lorette and Mary Barklay's Mountain provide the backdrop for these photogenic ponds. On the east side of the Kananaskis Trail you'll see the ponds created by runoff from the main lakes, which can be reached by a very short circular trail: we recommend to hike it counterclockwise to the observation deck.
I DINTORNI DI CALGARY - IL CENTRO COMMERCIALE...OLIMPICO
Solitamente i grandi centri commerciali (mall) del nordamerica sono tutti tremendamente simili. E, quasi mai pensati per i tanti uomini che accompagnano per ore e ore le proprie compagne per i vari negozi. Il CrossIron Mills, a nord di Calgary, è l'eccezione che conferma la regola, perchè anche i maschietti potranno divertirsi evitando la corsa alle panchine libere tipiche di ogni centro commerciale. Il motivo? Semplice. Oltre ai tantissimi negozi a tema sportivo (Bass Pro Shop, un bellissimo negozio sull'Hockey e molto altro), vive letteralmente dello spirito olimpico che non ha mai abbandonato Calgary dal giorno in cui ospitò le Olimpiadi Invernali. Ed ecco che allora potrete camminare con gli occhi all'insù, ammirando foto e repliche delle medaglie ottenute dagli atleti canadesi in tutte le olimpiadi invernali...
CALGARY'S SURROUNDINGS - THE OLYMPIC... MALL!
Usually the huge mall in North America are all tremendously similar. And, almost never designed for the many men who accompany their wives for hours and hours around the various stores. The CrossIron Mills, north of Calgary, is the exception that proves the rule, because even boys will be able to enjoy themselves while avoiding the rush to the free benches typical of every mall. The reason? Simple. In addition to the many sports-themed stores (Bass Pro Shop, a beautiful store about Hockey and much more), it literally lives on the Olympic spirit that has never left Calgary since the day it hosted the Winter Olympics. And that's when you can walk around with your eyes rolling, admiring photos and replicas of the medals won by Canadian athletes in all the Winter Olympics...
