Albany, la capitale del New York State, è sempre più vicino, ma la risalita del fiume Hudson ha ancora tante perle da regalare, tra natura sempre mozzafiato e cittadine come Cooperstown, la casa americana del baseball, dove varrebbe davvero la pena vivere, con l'Otsego Lake a regalare immagini da cartolina. Il New York State è davvero un susseguirsi di sorprese una dopo l'altra e pensate che, dopo quattro giornate di viaggio, siamo solamente a 140 km a nord di New York City, dopo aver già attraversato stupende cittadine, cascate imperiose e montagne da perdere il fiato. E' quasi malinconico dover abbandonare, seppure per qualche ora solamente, il New York State per tuffarsi in un angolino di Massachusetts, una piccola deviazione prima di attraversare nuovamente il fiume Hudson in direzione ovest, verso la splendida Cooperstown...
Albany, the capital of New York State, is getting closer and closer, but the Hudson River and all the Hudson Valley still has many gems to offer, including nature that is always breathtaking and little towns like Cooperstown, the American home of baseball, where it would really be worth living, with Otsego Lake providing postcard images. New York State is really a succession of surprises one after another, and just think that, after four days of travel, we are only 140 kilometers north of New York City, after visiting amazing towns, imperious waterfalls and breathtaking mountains. It's almost melancholic to have to leave behind New York State, even if only for a few hours, and some time in Massachusetts, a little detour before crossing the Hudson River again in a westerly direction, toward the beautiful Cooperstown...

Dicevamo del Massachusetts, appunto, ma se come noi avrete scelto Poughkeespiee (o Hyde Park) per pernottare, non mancate di fare visita al Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, l'enorme ed affascinante tenuta di Frederick William Vanderbilt e sua moglie Louise Holmes Anthony, ora diventato un parco nazionale che che rappresenta la filosofia della casa americana di campagna di un ricco proprietario terriero agli inizi del 1900. E, se viaggiate con i pargoli, fermatevi un poco più a nord, alla Greig Farm, un'azienda agricola nella quale potrete trovare un "piccolo zoo" con i loro animali, una galleria d'arte, un cafè ed anche dei sentieri escursionistici. Incrocerete anche la Gallatin Church, prima di raggiungere il Massachusetts e quindi il Taconic state park & bash fish falls.
A QUICK TRIP TO... MASSACHUSETTS
Before entering Massachusetts, if you're staying in Poughkeespiee (or Hyde Park), be sure to pay a visit to the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, the huge and fascinating estate of Frederick William Vanderbilt and his wife Louise Holmes Anthony, now turned into a national park that represents the philosophy of a wealthy landowner's American country home in the early 1900s. And, if you are traveling with the little ones, stop a little further north at Greig Farm, where there's a "little zoo" with their animals, an art gallery, a café and even hiking trails. You will also see, a little further, the Gallatin Church, before reaching Massachusetts and then the Taconic state park & bash fish falls.
A dirla tutta il Taconic State Park si trova per metà nello stato di New York e per metà nel Massachusetts, all'interno di una delle più grandi foreste non frammentate degli Usa, designata dal The Nature Conservacy come uno "degli ultimi grandi luoghi d'America". Il parco si compone di tree aree non comunicanti, quello delle Copake Falls (la parte più settentrionale), Rudd Pond Area, (sud), ed il tratto di Ancram, nel New York State. Una delle attrazioni principali del parco sono le Bahia Fish Falls, la cascata a goccia singola più alta dello stato. Ci sono due modi per raggiungerla: il primo è percorrendo il trail dal Taconic State Park, nello stato di New York (6.8 km tra andata e ritorno), il secondo è invece decisamente più semplice. Vi basterà, infatti, sconfinare nello stato del Massachusetts e dal parking lot di Bash Fish Falls percorrere un brevissimo sentiero in discesa (circa 300 metri) che vi porterà direttamente di fronte alle cascate.
Actually, Taconic State Park is located half in New York State and half in Massachusetts, within one of the largest unfragmented forests in the U.S., designated by The Nature Conservancy as one of "the last great places in America." The park consists of three non-communicating areas, that of Copake Falls (the northernmost part), Rudd Pond Area, (south), and the Ancram area in New York State. One of the park's main attractions is Bahia Fish Falls, the highest single drop waterfall in the state. There are two ways to reach it: the first one is by hiking the trail from the Taconic State Park, located in New York State (6.8 km round trip), while the second one is decidedly easier. All you have to do, in fact, is trespass into the state of Massachusetts and from the Bash Fish Falls parking lot walk a very short downhill trail (about 300 meters) that will take you directly to the falls.
Tornati nello stato di New York, c'è ancora tanta natura ad attendervi, con l'High Falls Conservation Area, che ospita la cascata più alta dell'intera Columbia County. Raggiungerle è molto semplice, grazie ai tre percorsi che compongono il sistema di sentieri che portano alle cascate: il rosso, il blu ed il verde. Il Green Trail ed il Red Trail permettono al visitatore di ammirare le cascate dall'alto, il blue (il migliore) conduce invece al fiume e quindi direttamente sotto la High Falls. Mentre i primi due sono semplici passeggiate (considerate un miglio tra andata e ritorno), il blue trail vi obbligherà a superare diverse rocce per arrivare alla cascata. Nulla di complicato comunque.
Back in New York State, there is still plenty of nature waiting for you, thanks to the High Falls Conservation Area, home to the highest waterfall in all of Columbia County. If's pretty easy to get to the falls, because there are three trails that make up the trail system leading to the falls: the Red, Blue and Green Trails. The Green Trail and the Red Trail allow the visitor to admire the falls from above; the blue (the best one), on the other hand, leads to the river and then directly below the High Falls. While the first two are easy walks (consider a mile round trip), the blue trail will force you to pass several rocks to get to the falls. Nothing too complicated.

Il ponte più famoso (e scenografico) che attraversa il fiume Hudson è sicuramente il Rip Van Winkle Bridge, il ponte della città di Hudson che comprende anche una passerella pedonale realizzata nel 2018. Dall'altra parte del fiume riprende la marcia verso ovest (con la route 145) e quindi verso Cooperstown, ma non prima di aver visitato una delle icone del nord est degli Stati Uniti, i mitici ponti coperti. L'Old Blenheim Covered Bridge è anche il primo della spedizione, uno stop veloce per ammirare il nuovo ponte completato nel 2018 in seguito alla distruzione del precedente avvenuta nel 2011 in seguito ad una tempesta tropicale.
The most famous (and scenic) bridge spanning the Hudson River is surely the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, the Hudson City bridge that also includes a pedestrian walkway built in 2018. On the other side of the river, there's the road that leads to Cooperstown (Route 145), but make sure to make a quick detour for the first of many icons of the northeastern United States, the legendary covered bridges. The Old Blenheim Covered Bridge is also the first covered bridge of the trip, a quick stop to admire the new bridge completed in 2018 following the destruction of the previous one in a tropical storm in 2011.

Prima di raggiungere Cooperstown, non perdetevi una delle farm più belle della "Hudson Valley", la Grapevine Farms, nella cittadina di Cobleskill. Al suo interno troverete un bistrot, una bakery, un negozietto per gli acquisti e potrete anche gustarvi un tè con i biscotti (gli schoharie County Chocolate Jumble Cookie sono mitici) nel bellissimo patio esterno.
Before reaching Cooperstown, don't miss one of the most beautiful farms in the Hudson Valley, Grapevine Farms, in the small town of Cobleskill. They have a bistro, a bakery, a little store for shopping, and you can also enjoy tea with cookies (the Schoharie County Chocolate Jumble Cookies are legendary) on the beautiful outdoor patio.
Sul retro, nella sala dedicata, potrete (gratuitamente) partecipare al wine tasting, dove potrete assaggiare ed eventualmente anche acquistare alcuni tra i vini più buoni dell'area.

COSA VEDERE A COOPERSTOWN, IL "VILLAGGIO DEI MUSEI"
L'on the road 2023 mi ha portato a visitare diverse cittadine che mi hanno lasciato a loro modo qualcosa. Ecco, però ce n'è una che, per un appassionato di natura e sport, le batte davvero tutte e sto parlando ovviamente di Cooperstown, una stupenda località di villeggiatura incastonata sulle sponde del lago Otsego. Conosciuta anche come "il villaggio dei musei" per via dei tantissimi musei che può vantare, è tuttavia riconosciuta a livello mondiale per essere "la casa del baseball".
WHAT TO SEE IN COOPERSTOWN, THE "MUSEUM VILLAGE"
The on the Road 2023 has taken me to visit several small towns that have left me with something in their own way. However, this is one that, for a nature and sports enthusiast, really beats them all, and I am of course talking about Cooperstown, a wonderful holiday destination nestled on the shores of Lake Otsego. Also known as "the museum village" because of the many museums, t is nevertheless recognized worldwide for being "the home of baseball."
Qui è, infatti, nato il "passatempo americano per eccellenza" e qui ha sede la sua Hall of Fame, che richiama migliaia e migliaia di visitatori ogni anno. Ma quello del baseball non è l'unico museo cittadino, perchè ad esempio anche il The Farmer's Museum è uno dei più apprezzati nello stato di New York. Si tratta di uno dei più antichi musei di storia vivente degli Stati Uniti, situato in una fattoria ancora funzionante, dove il visitatore potrà esplorare un villaggio del XIX secolo, fare un giro su una carrozza trainata da cavalli o ancora assistere a dimostrazioni di artigianato.
Here, in fact, the "quintessential American pastime," was born and here is also the home to its Hall of Fame, which draws thousands and thousands of visitors each year. But baseball's is not the only museum in town: don't forget to visit for example The Farmer's Museum which is also one of the most highly regarded in New York State. It is one of the oldest living history museums in the United States, located on a still-functioning farm, where visitors can explore a 19th-century village, take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, or even watch craft demonstrations.
Ma è tutta Cooperstown ed in particolare la sua Main Street ad essere affascinate. Perdetevi tra i suoi negozi (molti dei quali a tema baseball) e spingetevi fino al lussurioso Otesaga Resort, dove potrete godere di una vista privilegiata sul lago Otsego che, dal punto di vista geologico fa parte dei Finger Lakes, anche se non viene conteggiato come uno di essi.
But it is all of Cooperstown and particularly its Main Street that is really fascinating. Get lost among its stores (many of them baseball-themed) and push on to the luxurious Otesaga Resort, where you can enjoy a prime view of Lake Otsego, which geologically is part of the Finger Lakes, although it is not counted as one.
Poi rientrare verso il centro e fermatevi a cena al Lake Front Restaurant, dove potrete gustare del buon pesce vista lago in uno dei ristoranti più apprezzati di tutta Cooperstown.
Then head back toward downtown and stop for dinner at Lake Front Restaurant, where you can enjoy good lake-view seafood at one of the most highly regarded restaurants in all of Cooperstown.
Gli appassionati di superalcolici non possono invece non visitare la Cooperstown Distillery, il cui Cooper's Legacy Bourbon è stato capace di vincere numerosi premi, come ad esempio quello del 2018 come “top 50 tra migliori bourbon”. Potrete scegliere se visitare direttamente la fabbrica (11 Railroad Avenue Cooperstown) ed effettuare un tour organizzato o fermarvi al bellissimo locale situato proprio lungo Main Street, nel cuore di downtown, per un cocktail a base di whiskey.
Spirits enthusiasts, on the other hand, cannot miss a visit to Cooperstown Distillery, whose Cooper's Legacy Bourbon has been able to win numerous awards, such as the 2018 "top 50 among best bourbons." You can choose to visit the factory (11 Railroad Avenue Cooperstown) and take a tour of the distillery or stop by the beautiful venue located right along Main Street in the heart of downtown for a whiskey cocktail.
Distillati, ma non solo. Cooperstown vanta anche una brewery di altissimo livello, sia come location che come prodotto. Qui potrete partecipare un tour, sorseggiare una birra "belgian style" o anche cenare. Tra le più famose che si trovano “year round” ricordiamo la Solera (tart golden ale), la apripeche (belgian ale con pesche e albicocche), la idyll days pillsner (belga lager non filtrata), la neon rainbows (ipa new england style), la hennepin (saison), la rosetta (sour ale aged con ciliegie) e la witte, una bianca con arancia e coriandolo.
Distilled spirits, but not only. Cooperstown also boasts a top-notch brewery, both as a location and as a product. Here you can join a tour, sip a "Belgian style" beer or even dine. Some of the most popular ones you'll find "year round" include Solera (tart golden ale), apripeche (Belgian ale with peaches and apricots), idyll days pillsner (Belgian unfiltered lager), neon rainbows (new england style ipa), hennepin (saison), rosetta (aged sour ale with cherries) and witte, a white with orange and coriander.
