Le capitali della maggior parte dei 50 stati americani non coincidono quasi mai con le città principali o più grandi. Non è Los Angeles la capitale della California, non è Las Vegas quella del Nevada e non è neppure Chicago quella dell'Ilinois. E no, non è New York City la capitale del New York State, bensì Albany, sulle sponde del fiume Hudson. E' qui che sono dislocati tutti gli uffici amministrativi dello stato ed è proprio qui che sono diretto, in una giornata spesa a visitare tutte le bellezze della città e dei suoi dintorni, ricchi di piccole cittadine da cartolina e la solita incantevole natura delle Catskill Mountains...
Most of the 50 U.S. states capitals are hardly ever the largest cities. Los Angeles isn't the capital of California, Las Vegas isn't that of Nevada, and it is not even Chicago that of Ilinois. And no, it is not New York City the capital of New York State, but Albany, on the banks of the Hudson River. That's where all the state's administrative offices are located, and that's where i'm headed, on a day spent visiting all the sights of the city and its environs, full of picture-postcard small towns and the usual enchanting nature of the Catskill Mountains...
NEXT STOP: The teepee (18.7 miles)
Se come noi, e come moltissimi dei turisti che visitano New York State, state provenendo da ovest e quindi da Cooperstown, perdetevi lungo un tratto della storica Us Route 20, una delle strade del "coast to coast" americano, una lingua d'asfalto che collega Newport, in Oregon, con Boston, nel Massachusetts. Vi porterà dritti ad Albany, passando per alcuni luoghi iconici come ad esempio il The Teepee (purtroppo io l'ho trovato chiuso per motivi familiari), un edificio a forma di Teepee nel quale potrete trovare articoli da regalo, molti dei quali prodotti proprio dai nativi americani.
If like us, and like many of the tourists who visit New York State, you are coming from the west and thus from Cooperstown, get lost along a stretch of historic Us Route 20, one of America's "coast to coast" roads, a tongue of asphalt that connects Newport, Oregon, with Boston, Massachusetts. It takes you straight to Albany, passing some iconic places such as The Teepee (unfortunately it was closed for family reasons), a Teepee-shaped building in which you can find gift items, many of them made by Native Americans.
NEXT STOP: John Boyd Thacher State Park (42 miles)
Ma la grande attrazione, almeno a livello naturale, dell'area di Albany (la capitale è davvero vicinissima...) è il John Boyd Thacher State Park (ingresso: 6 dollari a veicolo), uno dei parchi statali più apprezzati nella valle dell'Hudson grazie alla Scarpata di Helderberg, una delle più ricche formazioni fossili al mondo. Da queste parti si passa solitamente per correre il bellissimo Indian Ladder Trail (che si aggiunge ad altre 12 miglia di sentieri), un percorso che dopo il covid è diventato one way (3 km, tra andata e ritorno) e che regala un rapporto tra sforzo e ricompensa finale davvero interessante. Lasciate la vostra vettura all'enorme parcheggio situato a ridosso del visitor center, situato sul bordo della Scarpata di Helderberg, una lunga dorsale di calcare formatasi circa trecento milioni di anni fa. Da qui seguite il sentiero che scende verso la scarpata.
But the main attraction, at least on a natural level, in the Albany area (the capital is really very close...) is John Boyd Thacher State Park (admission: $6 per vehicle), one of the most popular state parks in the Hudson Valley thanks to the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil formations in the world. Visitors usually pass through here because they want to hike the beautiful Indian Ladder Trail (which adds another 12 miles of trails), a trail that is now one way (2 miles, round trip) and gives a really interesting reward. Leave your car at the huge parking lot abutting the visitor center, located on the edge of the Helderberg Escarpment, a long limestone ridge formed about three hundred million years ago. From here follow the path down to the escarpment.
L'Indian Ladder Trail nel Thacher State Park è lungo solo tre km, ma vi troverete a camminare a ridosso delle imponenti pareti della scarpata di Helderberg, tra cascate (due) e viste davvero mozzafiato. Il sentiero inizia scendendo alla base della scogliera tramite una scala metallica: da qui seguite il facile sentiero lungo la falesia calcarea sino a raggiungere le due cascate, la prima delle quali è la Outlet Falls, l'altra è invece la Minelot Falls.
The Indian Ladder Trail within the Thacher State Park is only two miles long, but you'll find yourself walking close to the towering walls of the Helderberg Escarpment, among waterfalls (two) and truly breathtaking views. The trail begins by descending to the base of the cliff via a metal ladder: from here follow the easy path along the limestone cliff until you reach the two waterfalls, the first of which is Outlet Falls, the other one is called Minelot Falls.
NEXT STOP: Schenectady (17 miles)
Prima di raggiungere Albany, spostatevi a nord ovest verso Schenectady, la città dove è stato ambientato il film "Come un tuono" con protagonisti Ryan Gosling Eva Mendes e Bradley Cooper. Nota per essere la città natale di Mickey Rourke e molte volte menzionata della sit com Will and Grace (Grace è nata proprio qui), Schenectady vale davvero una deviazione.
Before reaching Albany, move northwest to Schenectady, the town where the movie "Like Thunder" starring Ryan Gosling Eva Mendes and Bradley Cooper was set. Known for being the hometown of Mickey Rourke and mentioned many times in the sitcom Will and Grace (Grace was born right here), Schenectady is really worth a detour.
Qui si fondono cultura, cibo, storia e shopping, tanto da garantirsi il nick name di “The Electric City". Cominciate la vostra visita da Jay Street e quindi dal bellissimo City Hall, per poi proseguire, dopo aver superato l'angolo con Franklyn Street, verso State Street, la via principale di Schenectady. Per farlo attraverserete una vibrante area pedonale (sempre lungo Jay Street) che vi porterà di direttamente nel cuore di donwtown.
Culture, food, history and shopping blend here, so much so that it has secured the nick name of "The Electric City." Begin your visit from Jay Street and then from the beautiful City Hall, and then continue, 8after passing the corner with Franklyn Street) to State Street, Schenectady's main thoroughfare. You'll cross the vibrant pedestrian area along Jay Street that will take you of directly into the heart of donwtown.
Da qua prende il via anche la Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway che, se avrete tempo, potrete percorrere interamente da Schenectady sino a Waterford, ammirando la valle del fiume Mohawk, ovvero l'unica via fluviale attraverso i monti Appalachi e quindi una delle principali rotte commerciali sia per i nativi americani che, poi, per i primi coloni europei. Alle porte di Albany potrete anche visitare le Cohoes Falls, considerate con un pizzico di immaginazione, va detto, le "Niagara dell'Eastern New York State". Altre chicche a ridosso della città di Albany sono Guptill's Coney Express Ice Cream, dove gustarsi un ottimo gelato e, soprattutto, il Troy Waterfront Farmers' Market (orari: sabato dalle 8 alle 14), situato nella città gemella di Albany, ovvero Troy, distante poco meno di 10 miglia dalla capitale. Si tratta di uno dei farmers market più importanti della nazione, votato addirittura al numero 1 da American Farmland Trust People’s Choice.
This is also where the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway kicks off. If you have time, try to travel it entirely from Schenectady to Waterford along the Mohawk River Valley, the only river route through the Appalachian Mountains and thus a major trade route for both Native Americans and, later, early European settlers. On the outskirts of Albany you can also visit Cohoes Falls, considered with a bit of imagination (it must be said), the "Niagara Falls of Eastern New York State." Other goodies close to the city of Albany are Guptill's Coney Express Ice Cream, where visitors can enjoy great ice cream and, most importantly, the Troy Waterfront Farmers' Market (hours: Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.), located in Albany's sister city of Troy, located just 10 miles from the capital. It is one of the nation's top farmers' markets, even voted No. 1 by American Farmland Trust People's Choice.
NEXT STOP: Albany (20 miles)
Come vi avevo anticipato, il grande obiettivo della giornata è Albany, a cui ho dedicato l'intero pomeriggio. Anche perchè c'era un appuntamento davvero imperdibile fissato per le ore 14, ovvero la visita dello State Capitol, il campidoglio dello Stato di New York. Ma andiamo con ordine, perchè sono tantissime le cose che si possono dire di Albany, le cui origini risalgono al 1624, quando gli olandesi proprio qui costruirono il loro primo avamposto militare, a seguito dell'esplorazione condotta da Henry Hudson (sì, quell'Hudson...) per conto della compagnia olandese delle Indie Orientali. Successivamente, nel 1797, all'indomani della nascita degli Stati Uniti, divenne definitivamente la capitale dello Stato di New York, soppiantando, così, la vecchia capitale coloniale, Kingston. Da allora seguì le sorti dello Stato, mantenendo comunque le vesti di piccola (poco più di 95 mila abitanti) città amministrativa.
As I anticipated, the big focus of the day is Albany, where i spent an entire afternoon. Also because there was a really unmissable appointment set for 2 p.m., which was the visit to the New York State Capitol. But let's go in order, because there are so many things that can be said about Albany, whose origins date back to 1624, when the Dutch built their first military outpost right here, following the exploration conducted by Henry Hudson on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. Later, in 1797, in the aftermath of the birth of the United States, it finally became the capital of New York State, replacing the old colonial capital, Kingston. Since then, it followed the fortunes of the state and nowadays it's still a small (just over 95,000 inhabitants) administrative town.
AD ALBANY LA PRIMA VOLTA IN UNO "STATE CAPITOL"
Il cuore pulsante della città di Albany è la bellissima Empire State Plaza, dove svetta imponente lo State Capitol, il Campidoglio dello Stato di New York. Finalmente, dopo averne visti diversi da fuori, ho colto l'occasione per partecipare ad una visita guidata (gratuita, da prenotare rigorosamente sul sito internet https://empirestateplaza.ny.gov/tours/new-york-state-capitol) di circa un'ora in cui si diventa "legislatori per un giorno".
IN ALBANY THE FIRST TIME IN A STATE CAPITOL
The beating heart of the city of Albany is the beautiful Empire State Plaza, where the main building is definitely the New York State Capitol. Finally, after seeing several of them from the outside, I took the opportunity to join a guided tour (free of charge, to be booked on the website https://empirestateplaza.ny.gov/tours/new-york-state-capitol) of about an hour in which visitors become "legislator for a day."

Guided tours of one of the most beautiful Capitols in the United States take place Monday through Saturday, 8:50 a.m. to 1:20 p.m., and provide access to the Assembly Staircase, a stunning Moorish Gothic-style room made of sandstone and granite, as well as the opulent Great Western Staircase, known as the "Million Dollar Staircase," which features portraits of prominent New Yorkers carved in stone such as Abraham Lincoln, Frederic Douglass, Walt Whitman and Susan B. Anthony.
Il tour consente ai visitatori di accedere alle camere dove lavorano i funzionari del governo. La sontuosa Camera del Senato presenta colonne in marmo di Siena, scrivanie in legno di mogano e sedie imbottite in pelle spagnola. Poiché la camera ha un'acustica superba, i senatori gridano "sì" o "no" con voce normale. The tour gives visitors access to the rooms where government officials work. The lavish Senate Chamber features Siena marble columns, mahogany wood desks, and chairs upholstered in Spanish leather. Because the chamber has superb acoustics, senators shout "yes" or "no" in a normal voice. Other must-see sights at the State Capitol are the Hall of Governors, a gallery of portraits showing the likenesses of New York's governors along with a chronology showing key historical events during each governor's term; and then the Hall of New York, a gallery of paintings depicting New York State's cities and landscapes, including works by Hudson River School artists; and the Hall of Flags, which contains flags dating back to the War of 1812.
Dall'altra parte della strada rispetto al Campidoglio si trova l'Empire State Plaza, una lunga spianata con una piscina ornamentale e tavoli da picnic. E' il principale luogo di ritrovo della città di Albany, al cui interno svetta la Corning Tower. Non tutti sanno, tuttavia, che non solo la Corning Tower è visitabile, ma che gratuitamente è possibile accedere al Corning Tower Observation Deck (controllate gli orari di chiusura: per accedere dovrete prendere l'ascensore dedicato).
Just across the street from the Capitol, you'll see the Empire State Plaza, a long esplanade with an ornamental pool and picnic tables. It is the main gathering place for the city of Albany: its main skyscraper is the Corning Tower. Not everyone knows, however, that the Corning Tower can be visited, and visitors can also have access to the Corning Tower Observation Deck for free (check closing times: you will have to take the dedicated elevator to gain access).
Questo edificio di 42 piani, costruito nel 1983 alla memoria di Erastus Corning 2nd, sindaco di lunga data di Albany, è ancora oggi il più alto dello Stato di New York al di fuori di quelli presenti a New York City. This 42-story building, built in 1983 to the memory of Erastus Corning 2nd, Albany's longtime mayor, is still the tallest building in New York State outside New York City. From here, the entire Albany Skyline can be seen, starting from the Plaza all the way to the Hudson Valley, the foothills of the Adirondacks, the Catskills and the Berkshires.
COSA VEDERE AD ALBANY? IL MUSEO PIU' BELLO DEL NEW YORK STATE
Un plus di downtown Albany è la gratuiticità di tutti i luoghi iconici dell'Empire State Plaza. Dal Campidoglio alla Corning Tower, passando per il New York State Museum, senza alcun dubbio uno dei più belli tra i musei statunitensi. Ma non è solo stupendo, è anche il più grande ed antico museo statale americano. Situato dalla parte opposta della piazza rispetto allo State Capitol, il New York State Museum spazia dalla storia all'attualità e quindi troverete ad esempio gli animali che popolano lo stato così come reperti del tragico 11 settembre, passando ad esempio per la storia che circonda la metropolitana di New York.
WHAT TO SEE IN ALBANY? THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MUSEUM IN NEW YORK STATE
A plus of downtown Albany is the free accessibility of all the iconic sites located along the Empire State Plaza. From the State Capitol to the Corning Tower, via the New York State Museum, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful of all U.S. museums. But it is not only stunning, it is also America's largest and oldest state museum. Located on the opposite side of the plaza from the State Capitol, the New York State Museum ranges from history to current events: so visitors will find, for example, the animals that inhabit the state as well as artifacts from the tragic 9/11, passing, for example, through the history surrounding the New York subway system.
E questi sono solo alcuni esempi di un museo gratuito (si accettano donazioni) che è un viaggio in migliaia di anni di storia newyorkese suddiviso in varie sezioni. Nato come Museo di Geologia e Storia Naturale nel 1836, dal 1976 è ospitato al primo piano del palazzo dell'istruzione statale di Albany, edificio che accoglie anche l'archivio e la biblioteca statale. All'interno delle sale espositive principali troverete ad esempio sezioni dedicate all'Adirondack Wilderness, agli uccelli di New York, o ancora alla Black Capital, ovvero la Harlem degli anni '20 e molto, molto altro ancora.
And these are just a few examples of a free museum (donations accepted) that is a journey through thousands of years of New York State history divided into various sections. Founded as the Museum of Geology and Natural History in 1836, since 1976 it has been housed on the second floor of the Albany State Education Building, a building that also houses the state archives and library. Within the main exhibition rooms you will find, for example, sections dedicated to the Adirondack Wilderness, the birds of New York, the Black Capital (1920s Harlem), and much, much more.
