La Hudson Valley è un susseguirsi di campagne, stradine panoramiche, montagne e tante piccole cittadine, ognuna diversa dall'altra ma tutte con un loro fascino. E, proprio risalendo il fiume verso nord (circa 15 miglia a nord di Kingston), c'è la piccola Saugerties, completamente diversa dalle vivaci Kingston e New Paltz, una città che si ravviva sostanzialmente solo due volte all'anno, nel week end dell'Hudson Garlic Festival (il festival dell'aglio) e per gli spettacoli di cavalli dell'HITS-on-the-Hudson. A livello turistico la principale attrazione è sicuramente il Saugerties Lighthouse, una faro del 1869 che funge ora da iconico bed and Breakfast vista la sua bellissima posizione nel cuore del fiume Hudson.
The Hudson Valley is a succession of countryside, scenic roads, mountains and many small towns, each one different from the next but all with their own charm. Just up the river to the north (about 15 miles north of Kingston), there is the tiny Saugerties, completely different from the bustling Kingston and New Paltz, a town that basically comes alive only twice a year, on the weekend of the Hudson Garlic Festival and for the HITS-on-the-Hudson horse shows. On a tourist level, the main attraction is definitely Saugerties Lighthouse, an 1869 lighthouse that now serves as an iconic bed and breakfast given its beautiful location in the heart of the Hudson River.
Per raggiungerlo, infatti, ci sono soltanto due modi: il primo è tramite imbarcazione, il secondo percorrendo il sentiero di 0.5 miglia. Il faro, restaurato in mattoni rossi, offre pernottamenti con prima colazione nel suo bed and breakfast, tour pubblici ed eventi speciali ed è arredato come all'inizio del XX secolo.
NEXT STOP: Tannersville (17 miles)
In fact, there are only two ways to get to the lighthouse: the first one is by boat, the second by walking the 0.5-mile trail. The restored red-brick lighthouse offers overnight stays with breakfast in its bed and breakfast, public tours and special events, and is furnished as it was in the early 20th century.

Ma, in una giornata in cui saranno le cittadine della Hudson Valley ad essere grandi protagoniste, la "sorpresa" è sicuramente Tannersville, che sulla carta avrebbe dovuto essere solamente "di passaggio", ma che invece si è rivelata davvero piacevole. Partendo dalla All Souls Church, una chiesa del 1894 costruita in stile neogotico e passando per Mama's Boy Burger, un'autentica istituzione in tutto lo stato di New York.
TANNERSVILLE AND ITS COLORFUL MAIN STREET
But, on a day when the Hudson Valley towns are the big players, the surprise is definitely Tannersville, which on paper was supposed to be just a city for just passing through. It then turned out to be really pleasant. Starting with All Souls Church, an 1894 church built in the neo-Gothic style, or the Mama's Boy Burger, an authentic institution in all of New York State.
Ma è l'intera Main Street ad avermi incuriosito, grazie ai suoi edifici interamente ristrutturati e dipinti con colori pastello, un'idea nata da un'artista locale e che ha portato il "Paint Project" ad essere prima inserito nella mostra "Today" e poi ha consentito a Tannersville di ottenere la nomina di distretto storico nel 2008.
But it is the whole of Main Street that intrigued me, thanks to its entirely renovated buildings painted in pastel colors, an idea that came from a local artist which led the "Paint Project" to first being included in the "Today" exhibit and then allowed Tannersville to earn historic district designation in 2008.
NEXT STOP: Plattekill Falls (6.6 miles)
Tra le città di Tannersville e quella di Woodstock, non perdetevi le Plattekill Falls, raggiungibili con una brevissima passeggiata (0.25 miglia, a sinistra della Little Red House) all'interno del Catskill Center. Alta 18 metri, è un luogo di ritrovo per i locali che qui amano spendere in tutta tranquillità le loro giornate estive, ma anche per gli amanti dell'arrampicata.
NEXT STOP: Woodstock (9.5 miles)
Located among the towns of Tannersville and that of Woodstock, don't miss Plattekill Falls, which can be reached by a very short walk (0.25 miles, left of the Little Red House) within the Catskill Center. With a 50-foot cliff, it is a gathering place for locals who like to spend their summer days in peace here, as well as for climbing enthusiasts.

Non vi è alcun dubbio che c'è uno e un solo motivo per cui Woodstock, New York, sia famosa anche da questa parte dell'oceano. Già, proprio quello. Dobbiamo risalire al 1969, quando fu teatro di uno dei principali eventi musicali ogni epoca, il Festival di Woodstock, il più grande concerto "hippie" della storia, capace di accogliere quasi 500 mila spettatori nella sua tre giorni di musica e festa. Ecco, innanzitutto il mito andrebbe sfatato, perchè il realtà il festival si tenne a Bethel, a circa 70 km di distanza, ma ciò non toglie che Woodstock sia ormai una città famosa in tutto il mondo. Ed anche tra le più visitate, a ragione, dell'intero stato di New York. E, per quel che vale, tra quelle che ho visitato una delle più belle in assoluto...
WOODSTOCK, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWN IN THE HUDSON VALLEY
There is no doubt that there is one and only one reason why Woodstock, New York, is very famous all over the world. Yep, that's the one. We have to go back to 1969, when it was the scene of one of the major musical events each era, the Woodstock Festival, the largest "hippie" concert in history, which attracted more than 400,000 attendees during its three days of music and celebration. Here, first of all, the myth should be dispelled, because the festival was actually held in Bethel, 70 kilometers away, but that does not detract from the fact that Woodstock is now a world-famous town. And also among the most visited, with good reason, in the entire state of New York. And, for what it's worth, among those I've visited, it's definitely one of the most beautiful ever....

Founded in 1829, with a population of 6,000, Woodstock is one of the largest communities of artists, particularly painters belonging to the Hudson River, and has long been something of a mecca for musicians and writers, and its name was well known even before it was linked to the famous 1969 festival. Bob Dylan also lived here in the 1960s....
Il suo downtown (Mill Hill Road e Tinker Street), oltre ad essere ricco di negozi, locali e cafe, è un luogo piacevole per una passeggiata, soprattutto in estate quando si popola di turisti. Se non sapete dove fermarvi, vi consiglio la Bread Alone Bakery, una panetteria/pasticceria che ormai da oltre due decenni è icona dell'intera Woodstock. Cosi come Sunfrost Farm, un Fruit Stand molto bello, ottimo in tutte le stagioni (i temi della zucca e del Natale sono strabilianti), dove troverete alcuni tra le migliori spremute fresche. Oltre al mitico frullato di papaia Maya miscelato, fatto con papaia, ananas, succo d'arancia fresco, lime e banana. E, per chi ama il gelato, la tappa obbligata è invece Nancy's of Woodstock - Artisanal Creamery.
NEXT STOP: Kingston (11 miles)
Its downtown (Mill Hill Road and Tinker Street), in addition to being full of stores, restaurants, and cafes, is a pleasant place for a stroll, especially in the summer when it gets crowded with tourists. If you don't know where to stop, I recommend Bread Alone Bakery, a bakery that has become iconic throughout Woodstock in the last two decades. Another place not to be missed is the Sunfrost Farm, a very nice Fruit Stand, great in all seasons (the pumpkin and Christmas themes are jaw-dropping), where you'll find some of the best juices. As well as the legendary Mayan Papaya smoothie, made with papaya, pineapple, fresh orange juice, lime and banana. And, for those who love ice cream, the must stop is Nancy's of Woodstock - Artisanal Creamery.

Located halfway between New York City and Albany, in the heart of the Hudson Valley, Kingston in addition to being the first capital of New York State, is commonly recognized as "the mural capital of America." The city is an open-air canvas, a den of artists who over the years have transformed the town into the "city of murals," thanks in part to the exclusive O + Festival, during which artists are invited to create large-scale murals throughout Kingston in exchange for free health care. You'll find as many as 36 murals, some of them truly huge, which can also be seen during the walking tour of its nice downtown, the Kingston Uptown Historic District.

The Kingston Uptown Historic District, also known as the Kingston Stockade District, is an area that preserves and promotes Kingston's history and heritage. It involves as many as eight blocks in the western part of the city and is actually the original site where the first Dutch settlers settled around the mid-17th century. The district features many buildings that have been designated as National Historic Landmarks, including the Old Dutch Church, founded in 1659 as the first Dutch Protestant church, or even the Four Corners, the only intersection in the United States where 18th-century Stone Houses stand on all four corners. And don't forget to keep your eyes up at all times, because there's a mural on every corner...

NEXT STOP: Walkaway over the Hudson (19 miles)
L'ultimo stop di giornata è l'ormai mitico Walkaway Over the Hudson, un ponte pedonale che attraversa il fiume Hudson. Con una lunghezza di 6.763 piedi (2.063 m), è la seconda passerella pedonale più lunga del mondo ed ha detenuto il titolo di passerella più lunga dalla sua apertura fino all'autunno 2016, quando è stato superato dal mile Into the Wild Walkway (2474 m). The last stop of the day is the famous Walkaway Over the Hudson, a pedestrian bridge spanning the Hudson River. At a length of 6,768 feet (2,063 m), it was the world's longest pedestrian footbridge from its opening until October 2016, when it became the second-longest after being surpassed by the 7,974-foot (2,430 m) Mile Into the Wild Walkway. The Walkaway Over the Hudson wasn't originally a pedestrian bridge, but a railroad bridge (1889) that was part of the New Haven Railroad's Maybrook Railroad Line.
Fu dopo il doloroso incendio del 1974 che fu prima chiuso e poi riaperto (2009) come passerella pedonale all'interno del nuovissimo Walkaway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, capace ogni anno di ospitare circa 600 mila visitatori. Il parco collega l'Hudson Valley Rail Trail al Dutchess Rail Trail e fa parte del più lungo Empire State Trail.
It was after the painful 1974 fire that it was first closed and then reopened (2009) as a pedestrian walkway within the brand new Walkaway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, which hosts about 600,000 visitors every year. The park connects the Hudson Valley Rail Trail to the Dutchess Rail Trail and is part of the longer Empire State Trail.
