Pedalare lungo i binari dismessi di vecchie ferrovie in contesti scenografici sempre spettacolari? Non solo è possibile, ma è una delle attività più diffuse in entrambe le coste degli Stati Uniti, escursioni che abbinano attività fisica a tanto, tantissimo divertimento. Ed è per questo che, prima di lasciare il New York State per il Vermont, mi sono diretto a nord di Saratoga Springs (di cui parlerò durante il post) per ripetere un'esperienza che avevo già effettuato nel 2017, in Oregon, quindi sull'altra costa degli Stati Uniti. La direzione è quella di Stony Creek, un'ora a nord di Albany, una delle tante sedi della Revolution Rail (https://www.revrail.com/), una compagnia che organizza in diversi luoghi della costa nord-est (New York State, New Jersey e Maine) e lungo le Rocky Mountains (Colorado) avventure di questo genere.
Riding along the decommissioned tracks of old railroads in scenic settings that are always amazing? It is not only possible, but it is also one of the most popular activities on both coasts of the United States, tours that combine physical activity with lots and lots of fun. And that is why, before leaving New York State for Vermont, I headed north to Saratoga Springs (i will talk about this beautiful city next) to repeat an experience I had already done in 2017, in Oregon, then on the other coast of the United States. The direction is to Stony Creek, an hour north of Albany, one of the many locations of the Revolution Rail (https://www.revrail.com/), a company that organizes adventures of this kind in several places on the northeast coast (New York State, New Jersey, and Maine) and along the Rocky Mountains (Colorado).
Tra le tante opzioni ho scelto Stony Creek-Thurman Station Run, un viaggio di 8 miglia (tra andata e ritorno) della durata di due ore (prezzo: 45 dollari a persona) a bordo di queste "Rail bike" sino a raggiungere la piccola comunità di Thurman, con la valle degli Adirondacks che crea un contesto scenografico impareggiabile. Una volta giunti a Thurman, nella mezz'ora di riposo, troverete un saloon, una farm ed anche la possibilità di fare sport. E no, non preoccupatevi, non dovrete portare il pallone da casa... troverete tutto l'occorrente per giocare a calcio, a beach volley oppure a basket.
Among the many options, I chose the Stony Creek-Thurman Station Run, an eight-mile (round trip) two-hour ride (price: $45 per person) aboard these rail bikes till the small community of Thurman, with the valley of the Adirondacks creating an unparalleled scenic setting. Once you get to Thurman, during the half-hour rest stop, visitors will find a saloon, a farm and even the opportunity to play sports. And no, don't worry, you won't have to bring a ball from home, you'll find everything you need to play soccer, beach volleyball or basketball.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, LA CITTA' DELLE SORGENTI TERMALI
L'idea originale, prima di spostarci a Killington, nel Vermont, era quella di spendere un'intera giornata visitando questa perla degli Adirondacks, Saratoga Springs, ma l'inserimento all'ultimo momento del "Rail Bike" ha fatto sì che avessi solamente qualche ora da spendere nella città delle sorgenti termali (una rarità negli Stati Uniti orientali), obbligandomi dunque a scelte anche dolorose. E dunque, delle quattro grandi attrazioni di Saratoga Springs (downtown, Congress Park, Saratoga Spa State Park e Saratoga National Historical Park), ho scelto di visitare solamente le prime due.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, THE TOWN OF HOT SPRINGS
The original idea, before moving to Killington, Vermont, was to spend an entire day visiting this gem of the Adirondacks, the city of Saratoga Springs, but the last-minute inclusion of the Rail Bike Tour meant that I had only a few hours to spend in the city of hot springs (a rarity in the eastern United States), thus forcing me to make even painful choices. And so, of the four major attractions in Saratoga Springs (downtown, Congress Park, Saratoga Spa State Park and Saratoga National Historical Park), I chose to visit only the first two of them.
Partendo proprio da downtown, il cuore pulsante della città, che si sviluppa intorno al Broadway District che si sviluppa in particolar modo proprio lungo la Broadway e che dal 1979 è inserito nella lista dei quartieri storici nel Registro Ufficiale Nazionale dei Luoghi Storici.
Starting right from downtown, the beating heart of the city, which is centered around the Broadway District, which is especially developed right along Broadway and has been listed as a historic district in the Official National Register of Historic Places since 1979.
Qui troverete hotel di livello come il The Delphi (4 stelle), edifici vittoriani splendidamente conservati, ristoranti, bar e negozi. Oltre al già citato The Delphi, altri luoghi iconici del Broadway District sono l'Adirondack Trust Company Building, voluta nel 1901 dal senatore dello Stato di New York Edgar T. Brackett (una banca storica che presenta porte e lampadari in bronzo Tiffany) che si trova al 473 di Broadway. la chiesta episcopale di Bethesda (41, Washington Street), il municipio (474, Broadway), il Collamer Building (480 Broadway) e l'High Rock Spring, una sorgente termale già nota ai nativi americani che si trova nella zona di High Rock, a ridosso della Broadway.
Here you will find upscale hotels such as The Delphi (4 stars), beautifully preserved Victorian buildings, restaurants, bars and stores. In addition to the aforementioned The Delphi, other iconic places in the Broadway District are the Adirondack Trust Company Building, commissioned in 1901 by New York State Senator Edgar T. Brackett (a historic bank that features Tiffany's bronze doors and chandeliers) located at 473 Broadway. the Bethesda Episcopal Church (41, Washington Street), the City Hall (474, Broadway), the Collamer Building (480 Broadway), and the High Rock Spring, a hot spring already known to Native Americans that is located in the High Rock area abutting Broadway.
COSA VEDERE A SARATOGA SPRINGS - IL BELLISSIMO CONGRESS PARK
Tra le tante cose da fare e da vedere a Saratoga Springs spicca sicuramente il Congress Park, il principale parco cittadino della città. Vi basterà attraversare la strada mentre percorrete la Broadway (versante sud) e vi troverete già nel parco che di fatto è una sorta di prosecuzione del downtown di Saratoga Springs.
WHAT TO SEE IN SARATOGA SPRINGS - THE BEAUTIFUL CONGRESS PARK
Among the many things to do and see in Saratoga Springs, Congress Park, the city's main city park, definitely stands out. You just have to cross the street as walking down the Broadway (south side) and you are already in the park, which is in fact a kind of continuation of downtown Saratoga Springs.
E', di fatto, il luogo di ritrovo della maggior parte degli abitanti che si perdono tra le sorgenti termali, nei piccoli laghetti popolati di uccelli, nel carosello risalente ai primi del 900 o tra i tanti percorsi che il parco offre. Il luogo principale del parco è tuttavia il Canfield Casino, uno storico casinò (ora diventato un museo) risalente al 1870 dove, udite udite, è stato inventato l'ormai famosissimo a tutte le latitudini Club Sandwich.
It is, in fact, the gathering place for most residents who get lost among the hot springs, the small ponds populated by birds, the carousel dating back to the early 1900s, or the many paths that the park offers. The park's main venue, however, is the Canfield Casino, a historic casino (now a museum) dating back to the 1870s where the now-ubiquitous Club Sandwich was invented.
Un altro polmome verde è sicuramente il gigantesco Saratoga Spa State Park (ingresso a pagamento se lo visitate in auto: 10 dollari) che comprende una piscina, la Victoria Pool (ingresso: 8 dollari), ma anche e soprattutto la scenografica Geyser Loop Road, una strada all'interno del parco che consente ai visitatori di ammirare i geyser. Chi non vuol perdersi proprio nulla di questo spettacolo della natura, potrà camminare lungo i 5 km del Geyser Spring Loop, che conduce a tutte, ma proprio tutte, le sorgenti termali. Il parco è l'ideale per trascorrere un'intera giornata all'aria aperta, approfittando delle moltissime attività da poter fare.
Another green lung is definitely the huge Saratoga Spa State Park (admission fee if you visit the park by car: $10), which includes a swimming pool, the Victoria Pool (admission: $8), but also and especially the scenic Geyser Loop Road, a road within the park that allows visitors to admire the geysers. Those who don't want to miss out on this spectacle of nature at all, can walk along the 5-kilometer Geyser Spring Loop, which leads to all of the hot springs. The park is a special place if you wanna spend an entire day outdoors, taking advantage of the many activities that can be done.
Oltre alla piscina, alle camminate ed ai geyser, potrete assistere a spettacoli teatrali allo Spa Little Theatre, presenziare ad eventi nello SPAC Amphitheater, visitare il Museo Nazionale della Danza e della Hall of Fame, il Museo dell'Automobile di Saratoga o spendere qualche ora sia al Lincoln Mineral Baths and Spa che al Gideon Putnam Resort & Spa. Finita? Certo che no. La "Peerless Pool" è un complesso di tre piscine, tra cui una piscina per bambini, scivoli d'acqua e una piscina olimpionica. E poi, ancora, potrete giocare a golf, tennis, softball e pallavolo...
In addition to the pool, walks and geysers, you can catch theatrical performances at the Spa Little Theatre, attend events at the SPAC Amphitheater, visit the National Dance Museum and Hall of Fame, the Saratoga Automobile Museum or spend a few hours at both the Lincoln Mineral Baths and Spa and the Gideon Putnam Resort & Spa. Is it over? Of course not. The "Peerless Pool" is a three-pool complex, including a children's pool, water slides and an Olympic-sized pool. Then again, you can play golf, tennis, softball and volleyball...
E SE AMI LA STORIA, C'E' IL SARATOGA NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
Suddiviso in due distinte aree (entrambe ad ingresso gratuito), il Saratoga National Historical Park conserva il sito delle Battaglie di Saratoga, la prima significativa vittoria militare americana della Guerra d'Indipendenza. Qui nel 1777, le forze americane si incontrarono, sconfissero e costrinsero l'esercito britannico ad arrendersi, un evento che portò la Francia a riconoscere l'indipendenza degli Stati Uniti e ad entrare in guerra come decisivo alleato militare degli americani. La parte centrale del parco, quella legata al visitor center, si visita come il più classico dei parchi nazionali americani: vi basterà seguire la strada principale del parco ("one way") e vi addentrerete nelle zone del combattimento. Tra i "must stop" vi ricordo il Freeman Farm Overlook e la Neilson House. A nord, invece, potrete visitare altri luoghi iconici del National Historical Park come ad esempio la Schuyler House, la casa di campagna del generale Philip Schuyler sia prima che dopo le battaglie di Saratoga, il Saratoga Monument, eretto per commemorare il luogo in cui il generale britannico Burgoyne si arrese ed infine Victory Woods (non lontano dal Saratoga Monument), dove di fatto gli americani sconfissero definitivamente gli inglesi.

LA PREVIEW DEL VERMONT - DUE GIORNATE NEL GREEN MOUNTAIN STATE
Lasciata Saratoga Springs, è il momento di percorrere le quasi 100 miglia che mi porteranno nel Vermont. Non dimenticatevi, a Fair Heaven, la prima cittadina dello stato, di fermarvi al Welcome Center (1356 Prospect St), dove potrete raccogliere brochures sullo stato, imparare moltissime cose su usi, costumi, flora e fauna e soprattutto fare la foto al mitico cartello che vi da il benvenuto nel "Green Mountain State". Già, perchè il nickname del Vermont è proprio questo, lo stato delle montagne verdi...
IF YOU LOVE HISTORY, DON'T MISS SARATOGA NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
Divided into two distinct areas (both free admission), Saratoga National Historical Park preserves the site of the Battles of Saratoga, the first significant American military victory of the Revolutionary War. Here in 1777, American forces met, defeated and forced the British army to surrender, an event that led France to recognize the independence of the United States and enter the war as a decisive military ally of the Americans. The central part of the park which is connected to the visitor center, can be visited like the most classic of American national parks: just follow the main park road (one way) and stop at the many view points, for example the Freeman Farm Overlook and the Neilson House. To the north, however, visitors can visit other iconic places in the National Historical Park such as the Schuyler House, the country home of General Philip Schuyler both before and after the battles of Saratoga; the Saratoga Monument, erected to commemorate the place where British General Burgoyne surrendered; and finally Victory Woods (not far from the Saratoga Monument), the place where the Americans finally defeated the British.
THE VERMONT PREVIEW - TWO DAYS IN THE GREEN MOUNTAIN STATE
Leaving Saratoga Springs, it's time to travel the nearly 100 miles that will take me into Vermont. Don't forget, in Fair Heaven, the state's first small town, to stop at the Welcome Center (1356 Prospect St.), where you can pick up brochures about the state, learn a great deal about customs, traditions, flora and fauna, and above all take a picture of the mythical sign welcoming you to the "Green Mountain State." Yeah, because Vermont's nickname is just that, the Green Mountain State....
... ed è proprio quello che vi regalerà questo piccolo angolo di paradiso (è grande come il Piemonte), il secondo stato meno popolato degli Stati Uniti ed unico tra quelli che fan parte del New England a non essere affacciato sul mare. Qui troverete animali (ho visto lupi, orsi, cervi e molto altro ancora), tantissime aziende agricole, montagne splendide, buonissimo formaggio e... uno sciroppo d'acero davvero delizioso.
... and that's exactly what this little piece of paradise, the second least populated state in the United States and the only one among those that are part of New England not to be facing the sea, will give you. Here you can probably encounter a lot of wildlife (I saw wolves, bears, deer and more), lots of farms, beautiful mountains, delicious cheese and... really amazing maple syrup.
Nelle due notti nel Vermont ho scelto come base la città montana di Killington, dove ogni anno si svolge la coppa del Mondo di Sci. In realtà, mancando un vero e proprio downtown, Killington non si è rivelata indimenticabile, ma tornerei ad ogni stagione (nessuno stato, più del Vermont, offre colori e scenografia differenti a seconda della stagione in cui lo visitate) per spendere altre notti nel bed and breakfast Mountain Valley Retreat ospiti di Mike e Barbara.
I spent two nights in Vermont and i chose as my base the mountain town of Killington, where the Ski World Cup takes place every year. Actually, in the absence of a downtown, Killington was not an unforgettable city, but I would return each season (there are no places like Vermont that can offer so different colors and scenery depending on the season) to spend more nights at the Mountain Valley Retreat bed and breakfast hosted by the amazing Mike and Barbara.
