Che il Vermont sia un piccolo angolo di paradiso nel nord est degli Stati Uniti non c'erano davvero dubbi, ma non ero così sicuro che anche in estate potesse regalare colori ed emozioni come succede nei periodi di alta stagione, che da queste parti sono soprattutto l'autunno con uno dei più belli "folliage" al mondo e poi l'inverno, quando le montagne si riempiono di neve e richiamano nei dintorni di Killington gli appassionati degli sport invernali. Ed invece mi son dovuto ricredere perchè il Vermont è davvero bello in ogni stagione, anche senza i colori clamorosi dell'autunno o le attività sulla neve.
There was no doubt that Vermont is a little piece of paradise in the northeastern United States, but I was not so sure that, even in the summer, it could give colors and emotions as it does during the peak season, that here is mainly autumn, with one of the most beautiful folliage in the world and then winter, when the mountains are filled with snow and attract winter sports enthusiasts to the Killington area. However, i had to change my mind because Vermont is really beautiful in every season, even without the resounding colors of autumn or the snow activities.
Mi è bastato lasciare il b&b e percorrere poco meno di trecento metri lungo la strada sterrata che mi avrebbe riportato sulla Us Route 4, la strada che taglia in due lo stato nella zona centrale per imbattermi nelle Thundering brook falls, raggiungibili grazie ad una scenografica passerella che in poco meno di cinque minuti consente al visitatore di raggiungere due piccole cascate, quella superiore (più fotogenica) e quella inferiore. Dove sono? A due passi da Killington, nel cuore dell'Appalachian trail, la lunghissima catena montuosa che prende il via lungo le Katahdin Mountain, nel Maine e si conclude alle Springer Mountain, in Georgia, un sentiero lungo ben 3500 km!
NEXT STOP: Lincoln Covered Bridge (16 miles)
All I had to do was leave the b&b and walk a little less than three hundred meters along the dirt road that would take me back to Us Route 4, the road that bisects the state in the central area, to come across the Thundering brook falls, reached by a scenic footbridge that in a little less than five minutes allows visitors to get to the two small waterfalls, the upper (more photogenic) and the lower. Where am i? Just a stone's throw from Killington, in the heart of the Appalachian Trail, the very long mountain range that starts along the Katahdin Mountains in Maine and ends at the Springer Mountains in Georgia, a trail as long as 3500 km!
La Us Route 4 è un susseguirsi di aziende agricole e scenari indimenticabili. La città principale dell'area è la piccola Woodstock, da non confondere con la Woodstock dello stato di New York, di cui parlerò però nella seconda parte del post. Ho scelto, infatti, di lasciare l'unico cenno di civiltà della zona per la parte finale della giornata (sulla via del ritorno verso Killington), limitandomi solamente a superare i suoi tre covered bridge: prima il Lincoln Covered Bridge, costruito nel 1877 e uno dei pochi esemplari di ponte in legno Pratt, il Middle Covered Bridge ed il Taftsville Bridge.

The Us Route 4 is a succession of farms and unforgettable scenery. The main town in the area is the tiny Woodstock, not to be confused with upstate New York's Woodstock. I will talk about this town in the second part of this post because i chose to leave the area's only hint of civilization for the final part of the day (on the way back to Killington). In the morning i just crossed the three covered bridges: first the Lincoln Covered Bridge, built in 1877 and one of the few examples of a Pratt wooden bridge, the Middle Covered Bridge and the Taftsville Bridge.

3207 Cloudland Road, Woodstock. No, non è un indirizzo qualunque, una decina di chilometri a nord della cittadina di Woodstock. Perduto lungo stradine sterrate, tra fattorie e campi agricoli, c'è infatti quello che semplicemente è il luogo più fotografato non solo nello stato del Vermont, ma di tutto l'intero New England: la Sleepy Hollow Farm. E no, non fatevi ingannare dalla comunque scenografica immagine che ho scattato nel cuore del mese di agosto, abbinate sui motori ricerca alla Sleepy Hollow Farm la parola autunno e vedrete immagini davvero incredibili. Da queste parti, durate quel periodo dell'anno, arrivano davvero tutti: dai turisti agli artisti, o semplicemente chi abbia voglia di dire di aver visto il luogo più fotografato del New England. Tra le cose da vedere nel Vermont c'è sicuramente la Sleepy Hollow Farm.

SLEEPY HOLLOW FARM-THE MOST PHOTOGRAPHED PLACE IN THE STATE
3207 Cloudland Road, Woodstock. No, it's not just a simple address, about ten miles north of the small town of Woodstock. Lost along dirt roads, among farms and farm fields, there is in fact what is just the most photographed place not only in the state of Vermont, but in all of New England: the Sleepy Hollow Farm. And no, don't be fooled by the however scenic image that I took in the middle of August, just pair on the internet Sleepy Hollow Farm with the word autumn and you will see some truly incredible images. During that time of the year, thousands and thousands of people come there: from tourists to artists, or just anyone who feels like saying they've seen the most photographed place in New England. Among the things to see in Vermont, don't really miss the Sleepy Hollow Farm.

Se la Sleepy Hollow Farm non si può visitare, lo stesso non si può dire della Sugarbush Farm, sicuramente la fattoria più bella che ho incontrato durante il viaggio. Qui non si viene soltanto per lo sciroppo d'acero ed il formaggio, le due "religioni" culinarie del Vermont, qui si viene anche per molto altro, in primis per scoprire la storia di una delle fattorie con più tradizione nello stato, sin da quando Jack e Marion Ayres l'acquistarono nel 1945 e, per primi, iniziarono a confezionare formaggi in barrette cerate in grado di viaggiare bene anche senza refrigerazione. Ecco, che non sia un posto qualunque ve lo spiega sia il Boston Globe, il principale giornale del New England, che nel 1975 spiegava come "Alla fine di una strada panoramica del Vermont, si trovasse un paradiso per gli amanti del formaggio" o l'American Cheese Society che assegnò nel 1995 alla Sugarbush Farm un nastro blu per il miglior formaggio affumicato del paese. Ora la Sugarbush farm è gestita da Betsy, la figlia di Ayres, suo marito Larry e i loro figli Ralph e Jeff e visitarla significa fare un viaggio nella storia centenaria delle aziende agricole del Vermont.
WHAT TO SEE IN VERMONT - THE SUGARBUSH FARM
If Sleepy Hollow Farm cannot be visited, the same cannot be said about the Sugarbush Farm, surely the most beautiful farm I encountered on this trip. Visitors don't come here only for maple syrup and cheese, Vermont's two culinary "religions". Visitors come here for so much more, primarily to discover the history of one of the farms with the most tradition in the state, ever since Jack and Marion Ayres bought it in 1945 and, first, began packaging cheese in waxed bars so they would well even without refrigeration. Well, that this is no ordinary place is explained to you by either the Boston Globe, New England's leading newspaper, which in 1975 wrote that "At the end of a scenic Vermont road lies a Cheese Lovers paradise" or the American Cheese Society, which awarded Sugarbush Farm (1995) a Blue ribbon for the best smoked cheese in the country. Now Sugarbush farm is run by Ayres' daughter Betsy, her husband Larry, and their sons Ralph and Jeff.
Qui si può tranquillamente spendere mezza giornata, approfittando delle diverse attività che la Sugarbush Farm offre ai suoi visitatori. Partendo dalle coccole agli animali della fattoria, o spendendo un po' di tempo nella cappella della fattoria costruita da Jeff Luce, utilizzata ancora oggi per celebrare matrimoni.
One can easily spend half a day here, taking advantage of the various activities that Sugarbush Farm offers to its visitors. Starting with pampering the farm animals, or spending some time in the farm chapel built by Jeff Luce, which is still used today to perform weddings.
Bellissima anche l'idea di creare il sentiero naturalistico nei boschi adiacenti la fattoria, una sorta di percorso con diversi stop in cui si impara tutto, ma proprio tutto sullo zucchero d'acero. Ad ogni cartello troverete le domande e, nel punto successivo, anche le risposte. E, se avrete ancora qualche dubbio, potrete visitare la Sugarhouse e scoprire come vengono lavorati gli aceri in primavera e come viene prodotto lo sciroppo d'acero. O ancora visitare la stanza di lavoro dove viene preparato il formaggio e assistere alla proiezione di un filmato che racconta la bellezza del Vermont nelle 4 stagioni vissute alla Sugarbush Farm.
It's beautiful also the idea of creating a nature trail in the woods adjacent to the farm, a kind of path with several stops where visitors learn everything, but everything about maple sugar. There are questions at each signpost and, at the next stop, answers as well. And, if you still have any doubts, you can visit the Sugarhouse and find out how maple trees are tapped in the spring and how maple syrup is made. Or visit the workroom where cheese is made and watch a short movie of Vermont beauty during the four seasons at Sugarbush Farm.
E poi, prima di dirigerti nello shop dove potrai acquistare formaggi, sciroppo d'acero, dolci, marmellate e molto altro ancora, attraverserai l'area degustazione: qui potrai assaggiare quattro tipi di formaggi ed altrettante tipologie di sciroppo d'acero.
And then, before heading to the shop where you can buy cheeses, maple syrup, sweets, jams and more, don't miss the tasting room: here you can taste four types of cheeses and as many types of maple syrup.

QUECHEE, LA CITTADINA DEL... FORMAGGIO
D'accordo, qui tutto ruota attorno allo sciroppo d'acero ed al formaggio, ma a Quecheee, situata una manciata di miglia ad est di Woodstock, è davvero una festa del formaggio per tutto l'anno. La comunità è piccola e ruota principalmente intorno a Main Street, dove non potrete non notare un ponte coperto (Queche Covered Bridge) con le annesse Mill Ponds Falls. La vista migliore sul ponte e sulle cascate le avrete pranzando a cenando nello scenografico ristorante di Simon Pearce. E, a proposito di Simon Pearce, dobbiamo per forza di cose tenere l'icona aperta perchè di lui torneremo a parlare nella prosecuzione del post...
QUECHEE, THE TOWN OF... CHEESE
All right, it's all about maple syrup and cheese here, but in Quecheee, located a handful of miles east of Woodstock, is really a year-round cheese fest. The community is small and revolves mainly around Main Street, where you shouldn't miss the covered bridge (Queche Covered Bridge) with the adjoining Mill Ponds Falls. You will get the best views of the bridge and the falls while dining at Simon Pearce's scenic restaurant. And speaking of Simon Pearce, we'll talk about him again later in the post...
Quechee è però famosa anche per la Quechee Gorge, (6053 Woodstock Road), ma soprattutto per il Quechee Gorge Village Vermont Antique Mall, distante una manciata di metri dalla diga. Questo mercato è enorme e offre davvero di tutto, spaziando dagli oggetti d'antiquariato che sono il protagonista principale, al formaggio, ai vini, ai prodotti locali e passando anche per il bellissimo museo sui treni.
NEXT STOP: Windsor (9.7 miles)
However, Quechee is also famous for the Quechee Gorge (6053 Woodstock Road), but especially for the Quechee Gorge Village Vermont Antique Mall, just a handful of meters away from the gorge. This market is huge and really offers everything, ranging from antiques, which are the main focus, to cheese, wines, local products, and even a beautiful train museum.
Ci siamo imbattuti nel suo famoso ristorante "farm to table", nel cuore di downtown Quechee, ma Simon Pearce è letteralmente il re del vetro soffiato almeno negli Stati Uniti. E, spostandosi una decina di miglia a sud, è possibile visitare la sua azienda, guardare come viene prodotto il vetro all'interno della fabbrica ed acquistare i suoi prodotti nell'enorme shop situato nel piano superiore.
We came across his famous farm-to-table restaurant in the heart of downtown Quechee, but Simon Pearce is literally the king of blown glass at least in the United States. If you just drive about ten miles south of Quechee, you can visit the company, watch how glass is made within the factory and buy their products in the huge shop located on the upper floor.
L'ultima tappa di giornata è la cittadina di Woodstock, che ho visitato nel tardo pomeriggio prima di rientrare a Killington. Il suo downtown, ma anche i dintorni, sono il luogo perfetto per la passeggiata che conclude la giornata spesa assaggiando ed ammirando tutto quello per cui il Vermont è famoso. Ma, se volete davvero la ciliegina sulla torta, prenotate con larghissimo anticipo e cenate al Cloudland farm (https://cloudlandfarm.com/), uno dei ristoranti più rinomati dello stato, sia per la qualità del cibo che per la location. Io purtroppo non ho fatto in tempo a prenotare (qui si cena solo dal giovedì al sabato ed il menù fisso per le varie serate viene pubblicato poco tempo prima), ma se volete davvero vivere un'esperienza "farm to table" ai massimi livelli, questo è davvero il posto giusto...
The last stop of the day is the small town of Woodstock, which I chose to visit in the late afternoon before returning to Killington. Its downtown, but also the surrounding area, is the perfect place for a nice walk that ends the day spent sampling and admiring all that Vermont is famous for. But, if you really want the icing on the cake, make reservations well in advance and dine at Cloudland farm (https://cloudlandfarm.com/), one of the state's most renowned restaurants, both for the quality of the food and the location. Unfortunately, i was too late and couldn't make a reservation (they are only open Thursday through Saturday and the fixed menu are released a short time in advance), but if you really want a farm-to-table experience at the highest level, this is really the place...
