USA SUMMER 2023 - ON THE ROAD ON THE EAST COAST: NEW YORK STATE, VERMONT, PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW JERSEY (Day 12: Geneva - Salamanca, New York State)

Ci sono giornate che, per quanto tu possa prepararle nei minimi dettagli, finiscono poi per essere incredibilmente stravolte perchè... semplicemente ti alzi al mattino e, dopo la "solita" colazione con muffin e anonimo succo d'arancia (trovare altro è sempre difficile...) nel "solito" hotel americano decidi che "perchè non tornare alle cascate del Niagara? Già, perchè non tornare a visitare le cascate più famose del nordamerica? Dopo tutto, distano soltanto un paio d'ore da Geneva ed il versante americano non l'avevo ancora visto... E quindi, mentre sul "solito" canale delle news passava l'ennesima notizia, ahimè infinitamente triste, di quello che stava succedendo a Lahaina, nelle amate Hawaii, ho deciso che non avrei visitato il parco statale più famoso dello stato di New York, bensì di dirigermi verso ovest, verso il Canada. Per le cascate ma non solo, perchè questa è diventata anche l'occasione per "fare due passi" (non di più, perchè di tempo ne avevo davvero poco) per Buffalo, la seconda città più popolosa dello stato di New York, dopo ovviamente NYC. E, dopo aver superato la pittoresca Canandaigua, situata sulle sponde settentrionali dell'omonimo lago, ennesima perla dei Finger Lakes, ecco comparire i piccoli grattacieli di Niagara Falls, la città americana delle Niagara Falls. Il Canada è lì ad un passo, ed il rumore imponente delle cascate lo si sente già in lontananza...

There are days that, no matter how well you've organized them in detail, end up being incredibly turned upside down because... you just get up in the morning and, after the "usual" breakfast made of muffins and bad orange juice (you're looking for something different in the Usa , good luck!) in the "usual" American hotel you decide that "ok, it's time to visit the Niagara Falls again" So, why not go back to the most famous waterfalls in North America? After all, they are located only a couple of hours away from Geneva and i have not visited the american side yet... And so, while on the "usual" news channel they are talking about what's happening in my beloved Lahaina, Maui (summer 2023), i'm realizing that i'm not gonna visit New York State's most famous state park, but rather head west to Canada. For the Niagara Falls but not just for that, because this is also the opportunity to visit Buffalo, the second most populous city in New York State, after NYC of course. So, after passing the picturesque Canandaigua, located on the northern shores of the lake of the same name, yet another pearl of the Finger Lakes, i notice the skyscrapers of Niagara Falls, the American city of Niagara Falls. Canada is there at a stone's throw, and the towering sound of the falls can already be heard in the distance....

COME VISITARE IL VERSANTE AMERICANO DELLE NIAGARA FALLS

Nel 2019 avevo già visitato il versante canadese (qui il racconto: IL LATO CANADESE DELLE NIAGARA FALLS), sicuramente più scenografico e imponente, ma se amate la natura e la possibilità di godere di questa clamorosa bellezza naturale senza l'atmosfera holliwoodiana dell'altro lato, il Niagara Falls State Park è davvero quello che fa per voi. Ma andiamo con ordine e, dopo aver lasciato il centro città di Niagara Falls, superate l'American Falls Bridge ed avventuratevi nel cuore del parco statale che ospita le Niagara Falls. L'isola che lo ospita è la Goat Island. Qui avrete a disposizione tre enormi parcheggi e ricordatevi che il terzo, il più lontano (parking lot 3) è spesso e volentieri gratuito. Il consiglio è di lasciare la vostra auto qui ed immergersi per una decina di minuti buoni nel parco, fermatevi a fare qualche foto al Mirador Sur Three Sisters Islands: da qui potrete ammirare il Niagara River prima che diventi... l'enorme cascata!

HOW TO VISIT THE AMERICAN SIDE OF NIAGARA FALLS

I had already visited the Canadian side in 2019 (here's the story: IL LATO CANADESE DELLE NIAGARA FALLS), which is certainly more scenic and impressive, but if you love nature and the chance to enjoy this resounding natural beauty without the Hollywood feel of the other side, Niagara Falls State Park is really the place for you. But let's go in order and, after leaving downtown Niagara Falls, cross the American Falls Bridge and venture into the heart of the state park that is home to Niagara Falls. The island that houses the state park is Goat Island. There are three huge parking lots here, and remember that the third one, the farthest parking lot (parking lot 3) is often free. The advice is to leave your car there and immerse yourself for a good ten minutes in the park, stop and take some  photos at the Mirador Sur Three Sisters Islands: from here you can admire the Niagara River before it becomes... the huge waterfall!

Anche nel lato americano, come in quello canadese, sono tre le cascate, che potrete ovviamente ammirare da angolature diverse: le american falls, le bridal Veil Falls (queste due cascate sono situate negli Stati Uniti) e le Horseshoe Falls (Canada). Il vostro obiettivo sarà quello di raggiungere il Rainbow Bridge, il ponte che qui collega i due paesi e, per arrivarci (sarà una passeggiata di circa un'oretta comprese le soste per le fotografia) incrocerete le cascate ovviamente, ma nell'arco della camminata troverete molto altro. 

Even on the American side, as on the Canadian side, there are three waterfalls, which can obviously be admired from different angles: the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls (these two waterfalls are located in the United States) and the Horseshoe Falls (Canada). I am planning to get to the Rainbow Bridge, the bridge that connects the two countries here, and if i want to get there (it's a walk of about an hour including stops for photography) i'll encounter the falls and much more...

Partendo dal Cave of the Winds (aperta da maggio a settembre) dove, con l'apposito biglietto d'ingresso, potrete seguire un sentiero fatto di passerelle che conduce ad un passo dalle American Falls. Anche la Bridal Vail saranno lì ad un passo, prima che la Goat Island Road vi conduca, dopo aver superato Green Island, nella seconda parte del versante americano delle cascate. Il Rainbow Bridge è sempre più vicino, ma qui troverete ancora molte icone del parco, come il bellissimo visitor center, la Observation Tower ed il Maid of The Mist, l'organizzazione che consente gite in barca verso le cascate (il suo colore è il blu, mentre in Canada è il rosso).

Starting at the Cave of the Winds (it's open from May-September) where, with the appropriate admission ticket, you can follow a path made of boardwalks that leads a step away from the American Falls. Bridal Vail is also there a step away, before the Goat Island Road leads you, after passing Green Island, into the second part of the American side of the falls. The Rainbow Bridge is getting closer, but here you will still find many icons of the park, such as the beautiful visitor center, the Observation Tower and the Maid of The Mist, the organization that allows boat rides to the falls (its color is blue, while it's red in Canada).

No, non ho resistito. Anche se decisamente più commerciale, non ho potuto fare a meno di visitare ancora una volta anche il versante Canadese e quindi ho dovuto per la prima volta superare il Rainbow Bridge. L'ho fatto a piedi (sconsiglio vivamente di farlo in auto) e, benchè sia molto più semplice rispetto a farlo con la propria vettura, non è così immediato. 

No, I couldn't resist. Although definitely more commercial, I couldn't help but once again visit the Canadian side as well, so I had to cross the Rainbow Bridge for the first time in my life. I crossed the bridge on foot (I strongly recommend to walk the bridge instead crossing it by car) and although it is much easier than doing it with your car, it can be complicated.

Una volta superato il ponte, infatti, dovrete fare i conti con la dogana canadese, con l'agente che vi chiederà per quanto tempo vi vorrete fermare in Canada. Il consiglio, da non sottovalutare soprattutto se fa molto caldo (o freddo) è di presentarsi nelle prime ore del mattino o tardi nel pomeriggio, per evitare interminabili code in dogana. Il difficile viene al ritorno, perchè avrete bisogno di un dollaro cash (non sono accettate carte di credito e non viene elargito nessun tipo di resto) per attraversare nuovamente il ponte. Dall'altro lato troverete il doganiere americano che vi farà le consuete domande in merito alla vostra breve avventura in Canada.

NEXT STOP: Buffalo (20 miles)

Once you cross the bridge, in fact, you will have to deal with Canadian customs (simple questions about your staying in Canada). The advice, not to be underestimated especially if it is very hot (or cold), is to show up in the early morning hours or late in the afternoon to avoid endless lines at customs. The tricky part comes on the way back, because you will need one dollar cash (no credit cards are accepted and no change is given) to cross the bridge again. On the other side you will find the U.S. customs officer asking the usual questions about your short trip to Canada.

A SPASSO PER IL DOWNTOWN DI BUFFALO

Come avevo già anticipato, non avevo preparato sostanzialmente nulla di questa giornata ma, sulla via verso il sud dello Stato di New York, ho incrociato Buffalo e non ho potuto davvero non fare una passeggiata per il suo downtown. D'accordo, Buffalo è molto altro, ma avendo solo poco più di un'ora a disposizione prima di recarmi ad Salamanca, sede di tappa, ho scelto di "perdermi" per le vie di questa città con tantissimi edifici di un certo livello, una rarità negli Stati Uniti, uniti alla natura, alle Buffalo Chicken Wings, alle gallerie d'arte ed ovviamente al solito... grande freddo che qui regna nei mesi invernali.

WALKING AROUND DOWNTOWN BUFFALO

As I had already said, basically there was nothing prepared for this day but, on my way to southern New York State, I went through Buffalo and I really could not help but take a stroll through its downtown. Agreed, Buffalo is much more than that, but i could spent just one hour visiting the city before heading to Salamanca, the stopover town, I chose to "lose myself" in the streets of this city with so many buildings of a certain level, a rarity in the United States, combined with nature, the world famous Buffalo Chicken Wings, art galleries and of course the usual... great cold that reigns here in the winter months.

Il suo cuore pulsante è Niagara Square ed è proprio da qui che ho scelto di iniziare la mia passeggiata per downtown. Qui svetta il Buffalo City Hall, il municipio, l'edificio più famoso (ed anche il più bello) di tutta la città di Buffalo. Realizzato nel 1931 con lo stile Art Déco, è alto 121 metri ed è uno degli edifici municipali più grandi del nordamerica. Al centro della piazza troverete un obelisco di 29 metri, il McKinley Monument, costruito in ricordo del presidente americano William McKinley, ucciso a Buffalo durante l’Esposizione Panamericana del 1901. 

Its beating heart is Niagara Square, and it is right from here that I chose to begin my walk through downtown. Here stands the Buffalo City Hall, the most famous (and also the most beautiful) building in the entire city of Buffalo. Built in 1931 in the Art Deco style, it stands 121 feet tall and is one of the largest municipal buildings in North America. In the center of the square you will find a 29-meter obelisk, the McKinley Monument, built in memory of U.S. President William McKinley, who was killed in Buffalo during the 1901 Pan American Exposition.

Non lontano, lungo Franklyn Street, non dimenticatevi di visitare l'ex sede del municipio, ora casa del tribunale e della contea di Erie, l'Erie County Hall. E' molto apprezzata la sua torre dell'orologio, alta ben 82 metri.

Not far away, along Franklyn Street, be sure to visit the Erie County Hall, former the City Hall and now the home of the Erie County Courthouse and of the Erie County. Its clock tower, a whopping 82 feet high, is highly prized.

E poi ancora il Guaranty Building, famoso per la sua facciata in terracotta che, guardata dal basso verso l’alto, colpisce particolarmente per le sue linee dritte verso il cielo, la Saint Joseph Cathedral e, proseguendo ancora verso Main Street (fino a Lafayette Square), il bellissimo palazzo comunale che si affaccia su Liberty Square. Intorno ad essa non potrete non notare alcuni dei principali edifici storici di Buffalo, come il Rand Building, il Brisbane Building e l’Hotel Lafayette. E soprattutto il Liberty Building con le sue...due Statue della Libertà! 

And then again the Guaranty Building, famous for its terracotta façade. Just look at it from the bottom up because it's particularly striking for its straight lines to the sky. Don't miss also the Saint Joseph Cathedral, and, continuing further down Main Street (to Lafayette Square), the beautiful Municipal Building overlooking Liberty Square. Around it you'll notice the Buffalo's major historic buildings, such as the Rand Building, the Brisbane Building, and the Lafayette Hotel. And especially the Liberty Building with its...two Statues of Liberty!

Nella parte settentrionale di Main Street svetta invece l'Electric Tower, mentre ancora più a nord, non perdetevi il Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, anima del Theater District, un'area di downtown conosciuta per i tanti teatri che la popolano. 

At the northern end of Main Street there's the Electric Tower, while even further north, don't miss Shea's Buffalo Theatre, the soul of the Theater District, an area of downtown known for the many theaters that populate it. 

LETCHWORTH STATE PARK, IL PIU' BELLO TRA GLI STATE PARK NEWYORKESI

E' vero, complice la deviazione inaspettata verso ovest, non ho avuto modo di visitarlo, ma credetemi... vi basterà scrivere Letchworth State Park sul vostro motore di ricerca per capire che stiamo parlando di gran lunga del più bello, scenografico e fotografato tra gli State Park dello stato di New York, Anzi, nel 2015, Nel 2015, ha addirittura vinto il premio del USA TODAY Readers' Choice Award come miglior parco statale negli Stati Uniti, superando gli altri 6000 (seimila!) parchi statati presenti nel paese. E, pur non avendolo visitato, ho deciso di raccontarvelo perchè l'avevo preparato nei minimi dettagli, con la previsione di dedicargli l'intera giornata. Il primo consiglio che vi do è quello di percorrere la strada (Park Road) che taglia in due il parco (ingresso: 10 dollari a vettura) partendo da nord e concludendo la vostra esperienza a sud, con il fiume Genesee che vi farà sempre da fedele compagno di viaggio. 

COME VISITARE IL LETCHWORTH STATE PARK

Se avrete scelto di seguire da nord a sud la Park Road, ecco tutti gli stop che potrete effettuare

1) Dam Overlook Gifts and Grill

E' il primo view point, molto easy. Qui troverete un ristorante, un negozio e... una bella vista sulla diga, la Mount Morris Dam.

2) Hogsback Overlook

Per un'ottima vista sulla valle del fiume e sulle montagne circostanti

3) Gardeau Overlook

Il Gardeau Overlook è situato in cima a una collina dove un tempo visse Mary Jemison, la "Donna bianca del Genesee".

4) Eddy's Overlook

Sicuramente la migliore vista del parco. 

5) Great bend overlook

View point sulla gola, qui profonda 550 piedi. 

6) Archery Field Overlook

Ultimo overlook, situato all’entrata sud del parco

7) Glen iris inn

Il Glen Iris Inn è una delle strutture più storiche dell'intero parco. In origine fu  la dimora di William Pryor Letchworth.

Ma, come per tutti i parchi, la vera differenza la fa la possibilità o meno di effettuare un'escursione a piedi. Già, perchè se avrete modo di percorrere anche solo una parte delle 7 miglia del Gorge Trail, cambierete completamente l'idea che vi sarete fatti in precedenza sul Letchworth State Park che da bel parco statale diventerà uno degli highlight del vostro viaggio. Il sentiero, che segue il lato occidentale del fiume Genesee, vi porterà ad ammirare le tre cascate principali del parco (Lower, Upper e Middle), sulle due meno famose (Shadow e Degewanus), tra paesaggi mozzafiato e viste incredibili. Se avrete voglia di camminare un pochino, lasciate la vostra auto al Foot Bridge Nature Shop (a nord) ed entrate nel sentiero percorrendolo verso sud. Incrocerete subito le Lower Falls, appena scesi nella gola per poi attraversare il The Bridge Across the River e proseguire verso il famosissimo Insipration Point. Questo è il luogo più rinomato del parco ed è raggiungibile anche in auto seguendo la Park Road. Vi basterà lasciare l'auto al punto numero "8", il Glen Iris Inn. Subito dopo aver superato Inspiration Point ecco davanti a voi prima le Middle Falls e poi le Upper Falls. Se vi fermerete qui, avrete percorso un bel tratto del Gorge Trail e potrete tornare verso la vostra auto.

NEXT STOP: Ellicottville (47 miles) 

Ellicottville, situata a sud-ovest dello stato, è sicuramente una delle cittadine più carine del New York State. Fondata nel 1820, Ellicottville è una popolarissima meta invernale per chi pratica  sci e snowboard in inverno, ma la sua reputazione sta rapidamente salendo anche nelle restanti tre stagioni dell'anno, grazie alla possibilità di praticare golf, nuoto, escursionismo e ciclismo. Sport e non solo però, perchè Ellicottville è famosa anche per la birra, la sua cucina raffinata e il buon vino. Il primo indirizzo che mi sento di consigliare è il 30 di Monroe Street, dove sorge la Ellicottville Brewing Company, ovvero Uno dei più antichi birrifici dello stato di New York. Il suo brewpub, aperto tutto l'anno, offre insieme ad ottime birre anche una buonissima cucina "american style". 

LETCHWORTH STATE PARK, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF NEW YORK STATE PARKS

It's true, due to the unexpected detour westward, I didn't have a chance to visit it, but believe me ... just  type Letchworth State Park into your search engine to realize that this is by far the most beautiful, scenic and photographed of New York State's State Parks, In fact, In 2015, It even won the USA TODAY Readers' Choice Award as the best state park in the United States, outperforming the other 6,000 (six thousand!) state parks in the country. And although I had not visited it, I would like to tell you about it because the Letchworth State Park is a park that shouldn't be missed. My first advice to you is to drive the road (Park Road) that bisects the park (admission: $10 per car) starting from the north and ending your experience in the south, with the Genesee River always being your faithful companion.

HOW TO VISIT LETCHWORTH STATE PARK

If you decided to follow the Park Road from north to south, here are all the stops you can make

1) Dam Overlook Gifts and Grill

This is the first viewpoint, very easy. Here you will find a restaurant, a store, and a nice view of the dam, Mount Morris Dam.

2) Hogsback Overlook

For a great view of the river valley and surrounding mountains

3) Gardeau Overlook

Gardeau Overlook sits atop a hill where Mary Jemison, the "White Woman of Genesee," once lived.

4) Eddy's Overlook

Definitely the best view in the park. 

5) Great bend overlook

View point over the gorge which is 550 feet deep here.     

6) Archery Field Overlook

Last overlook, located at the southern entrance to the park

7) Glen iris inn

The Glen Iris Inn is one of the most historic structures in the entire park. It was originally the home of William Pryor Letchworth.

But, as with all parks, the real difference is the fact you may or may not hike one of the many trails. That's right, because if you get a chance to hike even part of the 7-mile Gorge Trail, you will completely change your mind about the amazing Letchworth State Park, which from being a beautiful state park would become one of the highlights of your trip. The trail, which follows the west side of the Genesee River, will take visitors tothe park's three main waterfalls (Lower, Upper and Middle), over the two less famous ones (Shadow and Degewanus), amid breathtaking scenery and incredible views. If you feel like walking a little bit, leave your car at the Foot Bridge Nature Shop (to the north) and enter the trail by heading south. You will immediately cross the Lower Falls, just down into the gorge and then cross The Bridge Across the River and continue to the very famous Insipration Point. This is the most renowned place in the park that can also be reached by car by following the Park Road. You just have to leave your car at point number "8", the Glen Iris Inn. Immediately after passing Inspiration Point, don't miss the Middle Falls and then the Upper Falls. If you stop here, it means that you would have covered a good stretch of the Gorge Trai.

NEXT STOP: Ellicottville (47 miles) 

ELLICOTTVILLE, A LITTLE GEM IN SOUTHERN NEW YORK STATE

Located in the southwestern part of the state, Ellicottville is definitely one of the prettiest little towns in New York State. Founded in 1820, Ellicottville is a popular winter destination for skiers and snowboarders, but its reputation is quickly growing for golfing, swimming, hiking and biking in the other three seasons of the year. Sports and more, though, because Ellicottville is also famous for its beer, fine dining and good wine. The first address I would recommend is 30 Monroe Street, home to the Ellicottville Brewing Company, one of the oldest breweries in New York State. Their brewpub, open year round, offers excellent beers and very good "American style" cuisine.

Sempre in downtown, non dimenticatevi di effettuare una sosta da Watson's Chocolates (27 Washington St), un'istituzione nello stato e, se siete alla ricerca di un locale "all’europea", allora il posto che fa per voi è The Tee Bar (8 Washington St). Ultimi, ma non per importanza, sono il Purple Doorknob, il regno delle calze (ne troverete di originalissime) ed il Ratchet Hatchet, dove potrete sperimentare uno dei passatempi americani, il tiro con l'ascia. 

Also downtown, be sure to make a stop at Watson's Chocolates (27 Washington St), an institution in the state, and if you are looking for a "European-style" cafe, then The Tee Bar (8 Washington St) is the place for you. Last, but not least, are Purple Doorknob, the kingdom of socks (some of the are really originals) and Ratchet Hatchet, where you can experience one of America's pastimes, axe shooting.

Dopo il Vermont ed il New York State, è il momento di raccontare il terzo stato attraversato durante l'on the road 2023, il Great State of Pennsylvania, lo stato che ospita la città di Philadelphia, che racconta luoghi ed eventi di rilevanza storica per gli Stati Uniti, che accoglie la principale comunità Amish del paese e che vanta ampie foreste che fanno parte dei monti Appalachi. Io sto per attraversarla da nord-ovest e quindi dall'Allegheny Forest sino al profondo est, partendo dalla cittadina di Bradford, che nella fine del 1800 era considerata una sorta di "metropoli petrolifera" per via degli oltre 630 milioni di barili di petrolio prodotti dal 1871 al 1967, un'epoca d'oro ricordata nel Penn-Brad Oil Museum. Ma io sono qui, per un altro motivo, ovvero per visitare il Zippo / Case Museum & Flagship Store, il museo degli accendini Zippo e dei Coltelli Case (ingresso gratuito). 

After Vermont and New York State, it is time to tell about the third state crossed during the summer 2023 on-the-road, the Great State of Pennsylvania, which is home to the city of Philadelphia, that recounts places and events of historical significance to the United States, that is also home to the country's main Amish community, and that boasts extensive forests that are part of the Appalachian Mountains. I am about to cross it from the northwest and then from the Allegheny Forest to the Deep East, starting in the town of Bradford, which in the late 1800s was considered something of an "oil metropolis" because of the more than 630 million barrels of oil produced from 1871 to 1967, a golden age commemorated in the Penn-Brad Oil Museum. But I am here, in this town, for another reason, for the Zippo / Case Museum & Flagship Store, the museum of Zippo lighters and Case knives (free admission).

Il primo museo, il Zippo Family Store and Museum, fu aperto nel 1993 ma si rivelò sin da subito troppo piccolo ed inadeguato per soddisfare la passione dei collezionisti e la curiosità dei turisti che attraversavano l'Allegheny Forest e si trovavano dalle parti di Bradford. Nel 1995 furono dunque avviati i piani per un museo nuovissimo e funzionale, con annesso un negozio dove potrete davvero trovare tutto quello che è il mondo zippo, capace di accogliere oltre 100 visitatori l'anno. All'interno del museo troverete i più originali tra gli accendini Zippo ed un'area interamente dedicata allo sviluppo dell'azienda fuori dai confini americani. Compresa ovviamente l'Italia. 

NEXT STOP: Kinzua Bridge State Park (21 miles)

The first museum, the Zippo Family Store and Museum, opened in late 1993, but the original museum was quite small and quickly proved inadequate to satisfy the passion of collectors and curiosity of tourists who made the trip to Bradford. In 1995, plans for a brand new and greatly expanded store and museum were initiated. The grand opening of the Zippo/Case Visitors Center took place on July 18, 1997, coinciding with the company’s 65th anniversary celebration.  More than 8,000 people from around the globe attended the three-day event, inaugurating a flow of international visitors that continues today: collectors and tourists travel from all around the United States and many other countries including Japan, Korea, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, and Brazil to revel in their love of these two iconic American brands.

Una delle principali attrazioni di questo tratto di Pennsylvania è il Kinzua Bridge State Park (ingresso gratuito), una passerella pedonale costruita dove un tempo sorgeva il viadotto di Kinzua. La storia che riguarda il ponte e lo State Park è del tutto particolare: il primo fu costruito nel lontanissimo 1882 e al tempo era, di fatto, il viadotto ferroviario più alto al mondo con i suoi 92 metri di altezza ed anche il più lungo (626 metri). Il secondo, più adatto ai tempi moderni e che ripristinò il precedente fu costruito nel 1992 ma, alle 15.20 del 21 luglio 2003, un tornado classificato F-1 nella scala Fujita ne abbattè un'ampia sezione, con la struttura che oscillò violentemente per cinque volte prima di crollare. 

One of the main attractions in this stretch of Pennsylvania is the Kinzua Bridge State Park (free admission), a pedestrian walkway built where the Kinzua Viaduct once stood. The history surrounding the bridge and State Park is quite unique: the former was built way back in 1882 and at the time it just was the world's tallest railroad viaduct at 92 meters high and also the longest (626 meters). The second one, more suited to modern times and restoring the previous one, was built in 1992 but, at 3:20 p.m. on July 21, 2003, a tornado rated F-1 on the Fujita scale brought down a large section of it, with the structure violently oscillating five times before collapsing.

La parte di viadotto distrutta si può ancora ammirare dall'alto in quanto i resti non sono mai stati recuperati. Reinventato come passerella pedonale nel 2011, ora il viadotto fa parte del Kinzua Bridge State Park, un parco che consente ai visitatori di percorrere a piedi parte del viadotto sino al punto in cui s'interrompe bruscamente.  

NEXT STOP: Smethport (12 miles)

The destroyed part of the viaduct can still be seen from above as the remains were never recovered. Reinvented as a pedestrian walkway in 2011, the viaduct is now part of Kinzua Bridge State Park, a park that allows visitors to walk part of the viaduct to the point where it abruptly stops.

Lasciato il Kinzua Bridge State Park è il momento di attraversare lo stato da ovest ad est e, nel mio caso, nulla batte la panoramica Route 6, menzionata dal National Geographic come "una delle strade più panoramiche di tutta l'America" per le sue 400 miglia ricche di storia, piccole città e bellezze naturali. Ne percorrerò 120 miglia, quelle che separano la scenografica Smethport e Towanda, dove si concluderà la giornata. E proprio Smethport merita una menzione particolare per via del suo Smethport Mansion District, ovvero una trentina di proprietà che vantano storia e architettura e mostrano la vita lussuosa del passato di questa ricca cittadina della Pennsylvania. Su tutte la casa di Henry Hamlin, un tempo il banchiere privato più ricco degli Stati Uniti, la chiesa episcopale di San Luca e la Melbury House, un tempo utilizzata come scalo sulla via della libertà per gli schiavi che fuggivano verso nord attraverso la Underground Railroad. Senza dimenticare poi  il tribunale della contea di McKean, il Route 6 Diner, il Lindgren's mercantile e l'Old Jail Museum, il sesto luogo più infestato della Pennsylvania. Il consiglio è di perdervi lungo la main street, la strada che "taglia in due" la città. 

NEXT STOP: Wellsboro (69 miles)

Leaving Kinzua Bridge State Park, it is time to cross the state from west to east and, in my case, nothing beats scenic Route 6, mentioned by National Geographic as "one of the most scenic roads in all of America" for its 400 miles full of history, small towns and natural beauty. I'm about to travel just 120 out of the 400 miles, the stretch that separates the scenic Smethport and Towanda. Smethport deserves a special mention because of its Smethport Mansion District, or some 30 properties that boast history and architecture and showcase the luxurious life of this wealthy Pennsylvania town's past. Above them all is the home of Henry Hamlin, once the wealthiest private banker in the United States; St. Luke's Episcopal Church; and the Melbury House, once used as a stopover on the way to freedom for slaves escaping north via the Underground Railroad. Not to mention the McKean County Courthouse, the Route 6 Diner, Lindgren's mercantile and the Old Jail Museum, the sixth most haunted place in Pennsylvania. The advice is to get lost along Main Street, the street that cuts the city in two.

LUNGO LA ROUTE "6" - IL GRAND CANYON DELLA PENNSYLVANIA

La Route 6 è un susseguirsi di campagna, qualche centro abitato e tanta natura. Dopo tutto, parliamo di una delle strade del coast to coast americano (Roosevelt Highway) e, questo particolare tratto che collega New York con Chicago è sicuramente uno dei più apprezzati dagli appassionati di on the road. La piccola Coudesport, alle porte del Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, è famosa per ospitare il Cherry Spring State Park, il luogo migliore in tutti gli Stati Uniti perguardare le stelle e, in alcuni periodi dell'anno, anche per ammirare l'aurora boreale. In downtown val la pena fermarsi lungo main street per una sosta caffè al Cream and Sugar (115 N main street) e per fare qualche foto al Potter County Courthouse. Se siete invece di fretta, proseguite per qualche chilometro ad est, dove ad attendervi ci sarà il Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania (il suo vero nome è Pine Creek Gorge), circa 47 miglia di gola racchiusi in due parchi statali, il Leonard Harrison ed il Colton Point. Il sentiero più famoso si trova all'interno del primo parco, il Leonard Harrison State Park, un sentiero lungo 2 miglia (a/r) che permette di scendere fino alla valle del Pine Creek Gorge.

ALONG ROUTE "6"-THE GRAND CANYON OF PENNSYLVANIA

Route 6 is a succession of countryside, a few towns and a lot of nature. After all, we are talking about one of America's coast-to-coast roads (Roosevelt Highway), and, this particular stretch that connects New York with Chicago is certainly one of the most popular. The small Coudesport, at the gateway to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, is famous for being home to Cherry Spring State Park, the best place in the entire United States to gaze at the stars and, at certain times of the year, even to admire the Northern Lights. Stop in downtown, along main street, for a coffee stop at Cream and Sugar (115 N main street) and to take a few photos at the Potter County Courthouse. If you are in a hurry, however, continue a few miles east, where there's the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania (its real name is Pine Creek Gorge), about 47 miles of gorge enclosed by two state parks, Leonard Harrison and Colton Point. The most famous trail is located within the first park, Leonard Harrison State Park, a 2-mile-long trail (a/r) that allows you to descend to the valley of Pine Creek Gorge.

Per coloro i quali vogliano visitare quest'area, le due città che fungono da "gate town",  sono Wellsboro e Mansfield, distanti tra loro 12 miglia. La prima, Wellsboro, è decisamente carina. Un ottimo modo per visitarla è quello di prendere un opuscolo turistico al Tioga County Visitor Bureau e fare un tour a piedi dei luoghi più significativi della città. Tra cui il Courthouse (116 main street) ed i negozi (tutti indipendenti) di main street. Su tutti il Dunham's, un grande magazzino indipendente. 

For those who wish to visit this area The two towns that serve as gate towns, are Wellsboro and Mansfield, 12 miles apart. The first one Wellsboro, is definitely gorgeous. A great way to visit it is to pick up a tourist brochure at the Tioga County Visitor Bureau and take a walking tour of the town's most significant sites. These include the Courthouse (116 main street) and the stores (all of them are independent) on main street. Above all is Dunham's, an independent department store.

Prima di arrivare a Towanda, uno stop davvero imperdibile è il Mill Street Caramel Corn, un piccolo negozio che può tranquillamente essere ricordato come il regno dei pop corn. Ne troverete di tantissimi gusti, dal dolce al salato. Non lontano potrete far visita anche al Knapp's Covered Bridge, situato alle porte della città di Towanda, dove ho scelto di concludere la giornata. Towanda, che prende il nome dai nativi americani che consideravano questa terra il luogo perfetto per seppellire i propri cari, ha avuto un ruolo importante anche nella Rivoluzione Francese, perchè tra il 1793 ed il 1803 un gruppo di rifugiati francesi stabilì un insediamento proprio nei luoghi dove ora sorge la città.

Before arriving in Towanda, a really must stop is Mill Street Caramel Corn, a small store that can safely be remembered as the kingdom of popcorn. Visitors will find lots of flavors, from sweet to savory. Not far away, don't miss the Knapp's Covered Bridge, located on the outskirts of the town of Towanda, where I chose to end the day. Towanda, named after the Native Americans who considered this land the perfect place to bury their loved ones, also played an important role in the French Revolution because, between 1793 and 1803, a group of French refugees established a settlement in the places where the town now stands.

E qui ho potuto alloggiare in un fantastico bed and breakfast in stile vittoriano, l'Hatch House, gestito dagli splendidi Roger and Michelle Hatch. L'edificio, risalente al 1888, nel corso della sua storia è passato dall'essere una residenza privata della famiglia Tracey a chiesa battista ed ora è uno dei più rinomati bed and breakfast della Pennsylvania. Ah, e ricordatevi che a darmi il benvenuto ci sarà un bellissimo ma autoritario gattone, il vero padrone di casa... Semmai doveste passare da queste parti, fate tappa a Towanda ed alloggiate all'Hatch House!

In Towanda i was able to stay in a fantastic Victorian-style bed and breakfast, the Hatch House, run by the wonderful Roger and Michelle Hatch. T hroughout its history, the building which dates back to 1888, went from being a private residence of the Tracey family to a Baptist church and is now one of Pennsylvania's most renowned bed and breakfasts. Well, just remember that there will be a beautiful but bossy big cat, the real master of the house, that welcomes you.... If you ever visit this area of Pennslvania, stop in Towanda and stay at the Hatch House!

USA SUMMER 2023 - ON THE ROAD ON THE EAST COAST: NEW YORK STATE, VERMONT, PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW JERSEY (Day 14: Towanda - York, Pennsylvania)

Dopo oltre venti viaggi negli Stati Uniti sentivo che ancora mi mancava qualcosa per potermi davvero definire un "american addicted", quella magia che nasce dai film, dai lanci tra padre e figlio in un parco la domenica mattina. Non avevo ancora assistito ad una partita di baseball, il passatempo americano per eccellenza. E questa volta la fortuna è stata davvero dalla mia parte perchè, a programma ormai ultimato, mi sono reso conto, per puro caso, che nella città in cui avrei pernottato (York, in Pennsylvania) non solo possedeva una squadra di baseball che gioca nella seconda lega americana (la nostra serie B), ma che la stessa sera avrebbe disputato un sentitissimo derby con i "cugini" del Lancaster, città conosciuta anche dalle nostre parti per essere la "città degli amish". E allora, ecco che una giornata funestata dalla pioggia che mi ha sostanzialmente impedito di visitare la maggior parte dei luoghi che avrei voluto vedere, si è trasformata in una delle esperienze più significative di tutti i viaggi negli Usa. Perchè, se è vero che il basket e l'Nba hanno per me un fascino inarrivabile (e le diverse partite Nba viste dal vivo non avranno mai eguali), non puoi dire di essere davvero entrato a contatto con la cultura americana senza aver assistito ad una partita di baseball...

NEXT STOP: The mad Bakers (18 miles)

After more than twenty trips to the United States, I felt that something was still missing for me to truly call myself an "American addict," that magic that comes from movies, from father and son playing in a park on a Sunday morning. I had not yet attended a baseball game, the quintessential American pastime. And this time luck was really on my side because, with the travel plan already completed, I realized, by pure chance, that the city where I planned to stay overnight (York, Pennsylvania) not only owned a baseball team that plays in the American Minor League, but they would have played that night against the bitter rivals Lancaster, a city known even in Europe for being the "city of the Amish." So, here was a day rained out, which basically prevented me from visiting most of the places I would have liked to see, turned into one of the most meaningful experiences of any trip to the US. Because, while it is true that basketball and the Nba have an unmatched fascination for me, you can't really say you've come into contact with American culture without attending a baseball game...

ROTOLANDO VERSO SUD - NEL CUORE DELLA PENNSYLVANIA

Un viaggio in Pennsylvania che si rispetti non può davvero prescindere da due luoghi sacri dello stato, la città di Hershey, il regno americano del cioccolato e Lancaster, la "casa" della più grande comunità amish degli Stati Uniti. Ma di queste due icone parlerò nei prossimi due post, ora è tempo di "tagliare" in due lo stato da nord a sud, costeggiare Scranton (la città di "the Office", una delle serie tv più divertenti di sempre) e avvicinarmi a York (a due passi sia da Hershey che da Lancaster), dove assisterò per la prima volta ad un match di baseball. Con la pioggia che ha pesantemente condizionato la giornata, dopo aver superato il Wyalusing Rocks Scenic Overlook (che con il sole avrebbe avuto decisamente un altro impatto), ho scelto di fare tappa a Dushore, al The Mad Bakers, per assaggiare quelle che per molti sono tra le donuts più buone della Pennsylvania. E non avevo alcun dubbio che fosse vero, in primis per la fila di persone in attesa di queste prelibatezze e poi per il fatto che alle 8.30 del mattino fossero già terminate quasi tutte (ma tranquilli, la seconda sfornata giornaliera sarebbe arrivata da lì a breve!). 

ROLLING SOUTH - INTO THE HEART OF PENNSYLVANIA

In a road trip to Pennsylvania really, visitors cannot ignore two sacred places in the state, the cities of Hershey, the American chocolate kingdom, and Lancaster, the home of the largest Amish community in the United States. Anyway, i will talk about these two icons in the next two posts, now it's time to "cut" the state in two from north to south, skirt Scranton (the city of "the Office," one of the funniest TV series ever) and approach York (a stone's throw from both Hershey and Lancaster), where I will attend a baseball game for the first time. With the rain heavily affecting the day, after passing the Wyalusing Rocks Scenic Overlook (which would definitely have made a different impact in sunshine), I chose to stop in Dushore, at The Mad Bakers, to sample what many people consider among the best donuts in Pennsylvania. And there was no doubt in my mind that this was true, first because of the line of people waiting for these delicacies and then because of the fact that by 8:30 a.m. they were already almost all gone (but don't worry, the second daily batch would come soon!).

NEXT STOP: Ricketts Glen State Park (19 miles)

Il clou della giornata avrebbe dovuto essere questo bellissimo parco statale, ma la pioggia davvero forte mi ha di fatto precluso la visita. Eppure il Ricketts Glen State Park merita davvero una sosta, per ammirare la sua foresta secolare e le 22 (esatto) cascate che compongono il principale sentiero del parco, su tutte la più alta, ovvero la Ganoga Falls. Se doveste passare da queste parti, lasciate la vostra vettura al parcheggio Lake Rose Trail Head e cominciare il sentiero circolare (lunghezza 5 km) denominato Falls Loop Trail che conduce a 18 delle 22 cascate visibili visitando il parco. Se però non volete perderne neppure una, allora percorrete il sentiero più lungo (7 miglia), che vi consentirà di ammirarle davvero tutte!

NEXT STOP: Retherford's Farm Market Produce and Antiques (14 miles)

Uno stop consigliato, se state come me dirigendovi verso il sud dello stato, è questa particolarissima bancarella agricola, il Retherford's Farm Market a Benton. Si tratta di un'azienda agricola a conduzione familiare che oltre a vendere frutta e verdura, offre un piccolo parco giochi per i bambini (c'è anche un bel trenino!) e soprattutto vanta un bellissimo fienile all'interno del quale troverete incredibili oggetti d'epoca, tutti acquistabili. 

NEXT STOP: Ricketts Glen State Park (19 miles).

The highlight of the day was supposed to be this beautiful state park, but beacause of the really heavy i couldn't visit it. Still, Ricketts Glen State Park is really worth a stop, to admire its centuries-old forest and the 22 (that's right) waterfalls that make up the park's main trail, and especially the tallest one, namely Ganoga Falls. If you're planning to visit this park, just leave your car at the Lake Rose Trail Head parking lot and start to hike the loop trail (5 km long) called Falls Loop Trail that leads to 18 of the 22 waterfalls visible when visiting the park. However, if you don't want to miss a single one, then take the longer trail (7 miles), which allows to really see them all!

NEXT STOP: Retherford's Farm Market Produce and Antiques (14 miles).

A recommended stop, if you are, like me, heading to the southern part of the state, is this very special farm stand, Retherford's Farm Market in Benton. This is a family-owned farm that, in addition to selling fruits and vegetables, offers a small playground for children (there's even a nice little train!) and most importantly boasts a beautiful barn where visitors will find amazing vintage items, all of which can be purchased.

Prima di giungere a York, incrocerete diversi "covered bridge", che in Pennsylvania sono presenti in numero davvero cospicuo. Su tutti lo Stillwater Covered Bridge, l'East Paden Covered Bridge ed il Josiah Hess Covered Bridge, situati tutti e tre a breve distanza l'uno dall'altro, non lontani dalla "487" e quindi dal Retherford's Farm Market.

A SPASSO PER YORK, UNA VIBRANTE CITTADINA RICCA DI STORIA

L'appuntamento con la "prima" del baseball è per le 19, un'occasione più unica che rara per scoprire la città di York, spesso definita come un "museo architettonico" grazie ai suoi tanti edifici antichi, ma anche considerata come "capitale mondiale dei tour delle fabbriche", perchè qui viene prodotto davvero di tutto, dalle motociclette alle caramelle, passando per le patatine. Qui ha inoltre sede la "hall of fame" del sollevamento pesi, la Weight Lifting Hall of Fame.

Above all the Stillwater Covered Bridge, the East Paden Covered Bridge and the Josiah Hess Covered Bridge, all three located within a short distance of each other, not far from "487" and thus from Retherford's Farm Market.

WALKING AROUND YORK, A VIBRANT TOWN RICH IN HISTORY

The baseball "premiere" is at 7 p.m., a lifetime opportunity for me to discover the city of York, often referred to as an "architectural museum" thanks to its many old buildings, but also regarded as the "factory tour capital of the world," because everything (from motorcycles, to candy, to potato chips) is really made here. It is also home to the "hall of fame" of weight lifting, the Weight Lifting Hall of Fame.

Il suo fiore all'occhiello è però sicuramente il downtown, cuore ed anima della vita cittadina. Sebbene risalga principalmente al periodo vittoriano, il centro conserva perfettamente oltre tre secoli di storia americana: in pochi isolati, scoprirete luoghi e storie legate ai primi pionieri, ai soldati della guerra rivoluzionaria e agli agricoltori del XIX secolo. Se a ciò si aggiungono le vivaci attività commerciali e gli invitanti ristoranti, l'affascinante zona di Historic Downtown diventa davvero imperdibile. 

Its flagship, however, is surely downtown, the heart and soul of city life. Although it dates mainly from the Victorian period, downtown perfectly preserves more than three centuries of American history: within a few blocks, you will discover places and stories related to early pioneers, Revolutionary War soldiers and 19th-century farmers. If you add to that the bustling businesses and inviting restaurants, the result is that the fascinating area of Historic Downtown becomes truly unmissable.

YORK REVOLUTION - LA... RIVOLUZIONE DEL BASEBALL

Dal bellissimo downtown non potrete non notare, distante poche centinaia di metri, lo stupendo WellSpan Park, che con i suoi 7500 posti a sedere è la "casa" della squadra locale, gli York Revolution, una delle principali compagini della Minor League Baseball, la seconda lega del baseball professionistico americano. La squadra è inserita nella North Division della Atlantic League of Professional Baseball e sta per sfidare gli acerrimi rivali del Lancaster e, proprio questa partita, è stata la mia prima volta sul diamante del baseball. La partita è stata vinta dai Revolution, ma come sempre quando si parla di sport americano, è il contesto a fare la differenza: dall'atmosfera familiare, dalla possibilità di vivere l'esperienza dell'intrattenimento al massimo livello possibile e, non secondario, di partecipare attivamente alla partita. Già, perchè come sempre accade quando si parla di sport a stelle e strisce, il divertimento non manca mai... e io son stato anche doppiamente fortunato perchè, al lancio delle t-shirt (il t-shirt toss), una è finita proprio tra le mie braccia, rendendo questa serata davvero indimenticabile.

YORK REVOLUTION - THE. BASEBALL REVOLUTION

From the beautiful downtown you cannot fail to notice, just a few hundred meters away, the amazing WellSpan Park, which with its 7500 seats is the home of the local team, the York Revolution, one of the leading teams in Minor League Baseball, the second league of American professional baseball. The team is placed in the North Division of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and is about to take on arch-rivals Lancaster and, this game was my first time on the baseball diamond. The game was won by the Revolution, but as always when it comes to American sports, it is the context that makes the difference: from the family atmosphere, the opportunity to experience entertainment at the highest possible level and, not secondary, to actively participate in the game. As always happens here, there is no shortage of fun... and I was also doubly lucky because, at the t-shirt toss, one ended up right in my arms, making this a truly unforgettable evening.
