USA SUMMER 2023 - ON THE ROAD ON THE EAST COAST: NEW YORK STATE, VERMONT, PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW JERSEY (Day 9: Lake Placid - Syracuse, New York State)

Lake Placid è la città olimpica americana per eccellenza. Qui si possono vivere, nel senso più pieno del termine e al massimo livello possibile, tutti gli sport olimpici invernali e, se siete alla ricerca di adrenalina, anche provare il brivido di diventare un... atleta olimpico per un giorno. E quale disciplina più del bob, che combina velocità e ghiaccio, può rappresentare il giusto connubio tra divertimento e azione? Direi nessuna, ecco perchè ho scelto di recarmi qualche miglia a sud di Lake Placid, alle pendici del Mount Van Hoevenberg, la casa olimpica americana di molti degli sport invernali, tra cui lo sci di fondo, il biathlon, lo slittino e, appunto anche il bob. 

Lake Placid is America's quintessential Olympic city. Here you can experience, in the fullest sense of the term and at the highest possible level, all the winter Olympic sports and, if you are looking for an adrenaline rush, even experience the thrill of becoming an Olympic athlete for a day. And what sport more than bobsledding, which combines speed and ice, can represent the right combination of fun and action? I'd say none, which is why I chose to travel a few miles south of Lake Placid, to the slopes of Mount Van Hoevenberg, the U.S. Olympic home of many of the winter sports, including cross-country skiing, biathlon, luge and, indeed, bobsledding as well.

Sono stato indeciso sino all'ultimo se provare il biathlon (dove si combina sci di fondo e tiro al poligono) oppure il bob, ho scelto alla fine il brivido di quest'ultimo (https://mtvanhoevenberg.com/todo/bobsled-experience/) e ne è valsa davvero la pena, nonostante la discesa sulla pista del ghiaccio duri solamente circa 50 secondi. 

I was undecided until the last whether to try biathlon (where you combine cross-country skiing and shooting) or bobsled, I finally chose the thrill of the latter (https://mtvanhoevenberg.com/todo/bobsled-experience/) and it was really worth it, despite the fact that the descent on the ice rink only lasts about 50 seconds.

Ovviamente voi sarete solamente passeggeri del veicolo, perchè davanti a voi, a guidarlo, ci sarà un ex pilota olimpico americano per far sì che anche i più "paurosi" possano sentirsi tranquilli. La versione estiva del bob corre su ruote, quella invernale sulle lame.

SARANAC LAKE, UN GIOIELLINO SUL LAGO

Se c'è una città vibrante tutto l'anno in quest'area dello stato di New York, oltre ovviamente a Lake Placid, questa è proprio Saranac Lake. Più tranquilla, ma anche più chic, piena di negozi e ristoranti, di gallerie d'arte ed eventi che la rendono una delle mete preferite anche dai newyorchesi di New York City. Il suo downtown, che si sviluppa tra River Street, la via che costeggia il Flower Lake, e Main Street, è decisamente affascinante, tra graziosi parchi, una scultura di un serpente, murales colorati e... anche la walk of fame, che celebra personaggi che hanno avuto un legame con questa comunità come ad esempio Albert Einstein, Bela Bartok o l'autore Robert Louis Stevenson. Se aveste voglia di un gelato soft l'indirizzo da non mancare è invece quello di Donnelly's Ice Cream, 4.6 miglia a nord della città.

SARANAC LAKE, A LITTLE GEM ON THE LAKE

If there is a year-round vibrant town in this area of upstate New York, other than Lake Placid, this is precisely Saranac Lake. Quieter, but also more chic, filled with stores and restaurants, art galleries and events that make it a favorite destination even for New Yorkers. Its downtown, which runs between River Street, the road that runs along Flower Lake, and Main Street, is decidedly charming, including pretty parks, a snake sculpture, colorful murals, and even the walk of fame, which celebrates people who have had a connection to this community such as Albert Einstein, Bela Bartok, or author Robert Louis Stevenson. If you were in the mood for soft ice cream, however, the address not to be missed is Donnelly's Ice Cream, 4.6 miles north of town.

COME VISITARE IL THE WILD CENTER - IL MUSEO NATURALE DEGLI ADIRONDACK

Questo tratto della Tupper Lake Highway è davvero scenografico, un connubio perfetto tra natura e piccole comunità. E, a proposito di natura, ci sono un paio di luoghi davvero da non mancare anche se io, per questioni di tempo, ho dovuto sceglierne solamente uno. Il primo è semplicemente il sentiero più famoso di tutti i monti Adirondacks ed uno dei più gettonati nell'intero stato di New York, l'Ampersand Mountain Trail, un'autentica scalata che tuttavia regala, una volta in vetta al monte Ampersand, viste davvero impareggiabili sugli Adirondacks. La Lunghezza del sentiero è, tra andata e ritorno, di 10 km, ma il dislivello è davvero importante (540 metri). Molto più semplice è invece la visita al The Wild Center (https://www.wildcenter.org/. prezzo: 23 dollari), una volta conosciuto come Museo di Storia Naturale degli Adirondacks.

HOW TO VISIT THE WILD CENTER - THE ADIRONDACKS NATURE MUSEUM

This stretch of the Tupper Lake Highway is truly scenic, a perfect blend of nature and small communities. And speaking of nature, there are a couple of places really not to be missed although, due to lack of time,  I had to choose to visit one of them. The first one is simply the most famous trail in all of the Adirondacks and one of the most popular in the entire state of New York, the Ampersand Mountain Trail, an authentic climb that nevertheless gives, once at the summit of Ampersand Mountain, truly unparalleled views of the Adirondacks. The Length of the trail is miles roundrtrip, but the elevation gain is really significant (540 meters). Much easier, however, is a visit to The Wild Center (https://www.wildcenter.org/. price: $23), once known as the Adirondacks Natural History Museum.

Il The Wild Center è davvero il luogo perfetto se viaggiate con i vostri bambini. Mescola, infatti, all'interno dei suoi 470.000 m2 di parco, una parte interna ed una esterna, dove troverete davvero di tutto, soprattutto la grande attrazione del parco. Parliamo del Wild Walk che, nonostante abbia aperto solamente nel 2015, è diventata subito la più gettonata grazie ai diversi ponti (e piattaforme) che permettono davvero di... camminare tra gli alberi. Tra le esperienze all'aperto, tutte dedicate alla fauna ed alla flora del territorio, ci sono le tante possibilità di effettuare trail (bellissimo quello con la musica, il Forest Trail che combina natura, storia ed arte) ed anche quella di un giro in canoa (con la guida) lungo il Raquette River. 

The Wild Center is really the perfect place if you are traveling with your children. It mixes, in fact, within its 470,000 m2 of space, an indoor and an outdoor part, where visitors will really find everything, especially the park's big attraction. We're talking about the Wild Walk, which, although it only opened in 2015, immediately became the most popular attraction thanks to the different bridges (and platforms) that really allow visitors to... walk through the trees. Outdoor experiences, all dedicated to the area's fauna and flora, include the many trail options (i enjoyed the trail with the music, called the Forest Trail, which combines nature, history and art) and also that of a canoe ride (with a guide) along the Raquette River.

In questo museo interattivo, oltre alle esperienze all'aperto, ci sono anche cinque principali aree espositive al coperto: il The Pataki Hall of the Adirondacks contiene il The Living River Trail cheospita diverse lontre, la Big Wolf Great Hall che vanta un muro di ghiaccio glaciale ed è il luogo perfetto per ammirare diversi animali del centro. Situata appena al di fuori dell'edificio principale, non dimenticate di visitare neppure la piccola palude...

NEXT STEP: Salmon River falls (139 miles)

In addition to outdoor experiences, there are also five main indoor exhibit areas in this interactive museum: The Pataki Hall of the Adirondacks contains The Living River Trail that hosts several otters, the Big Wolf Great Hall that boasts a wall of glacial ice and is the perfect place to view several of the center's animals. Located just outside the main building, don't forget to visit the small swamp, too.

Tra il tempo speso a provare il bob, a visitare Saranac Lake ed a perdermi tra i rami del The Wild Center, mi son reso conto che avevo ancora quasi 200 miglia di auto prima di raggiungere Syracuse. Motivo per cui ho deciso di non spingermi fino al confine con il Canada, segnato qui dal Lake Ontario, rinunciando dunque alla visita del Tibbets Point Lighthouse e della vicina White Cap Winery, per spingermi fino alle porte di Syracuse, dove ad attendermi c'erano le Salmon River Falls. 

Between the time spent experiencing bobsledding, visiting Saranac Lake and getting lost in the branches of The Wild Center, I completely forgot that I still had almost 200 miles of driving before reaching Syracuse. Reason why I decided not to go as far as the border with Canada, marked here by Lake Ontario, thus forgoing a visit to Tibbets Point Lighthouse and the nearby White Cap Winery, to push: i preferred to get to the outskirts of Syracuse, where Salmon River Falls were waiting for me.

Dall'ampia area di parcheggio una passeggiata di circa 400 metri conduce alla parte superiore della cascata. Se invece vorrete scendere verso il fiume ed avere una vista decisamente migliore sulla cascata stessa dovrete seguire il sentiero in discesa posizionato circa a metà del percorso.

From the large parking lot, a walk of about 400 meters leads to the top of the waterfall. If, on the other hand, you would like to descend toward the river and have a much better view of the waterfall, you will have to follow the downhill path positioned about halfway down.

SYRACUSE, LA CITTA' REGINA DEI FINGER LAKES

Con i suoi quasi 150 mila abitanti, Syracuse è la quinta città più grande dello stato di New York e da sempre uno snodo commerciale fondamentale tra New York City ed il profondo nord grazie al canale Erie che permetteva lo scambio di merci collegando il fiume Hudson con il lago Erie. La città che prese il nome proprio dalla nostra Siracusa, è ancora oggi uno dei fulcri dello stato, anche grazie al centro commerciale Destiny Usa (ex Carousel Mall) che è il sesto più grande degli Usa ed attira ben 20 milioni di visitatori ogni anno. Ma Syracuse è molto altro. Qui si tiene ogni anno la fiera dello stato di New York che richiama pubblico anche dal vicino Canada, qui ha sede una delle più importanti università degli Stati Uniti, la Syracuse University (che vanta una delle migliori squadre di basket della nazione) e... fa un freddo incredibile, soprattutto inverno, dove la neve non è l'eccezione ma la regolarità!

COSA VEDERE A SYRACUSE, TRA STORIA E MODERNITA'

Il downtown di Syracuse ruota attorno ad Armory square, (che, attenzione, è un'area e non una piazza) e Clinton Square, questa si invece una piazza. Cominciate l'esplorazione della città proprio da qui, dove da novembre a marzo troverete anche una bellissima pista di pattinaggio sul ghiaccio, e proseguite verso il Niagara Mohawk Building, un edificio in art déco completato nel 1932 che fungeva originariamente da quartier generale della Niagara Hudson Electric Company. 

SYRACUSE, THE QUEEN CITY OF THE FINGER LAKES

With a population of nearly 150,000, Syracuse is the fifth largest city in New York State and has always been a key trading hub between New York City and the Deep North thanks to the Erie Canal, which allowed the exchange of goods by connecting the Hudson River with Lake Erie. The city, which was named after italian Siracusa, is still one of the state's hubs, thanks to the Destiny USA mall (formerly Carousel Mall), which is the sixth largest in the U.S. and attracts as many as 20 million visitors each year. But Syracuse is much more than that. The New York State Fair is held here every year, attracting audiences even from neighboring Canada; one of the most important universities in the United States, Syracuse University (which boasts one of the nation's best basketball teams), is based here; and... but don't forget that here is incredibly cold, especially during winter, where snow is not the exception but the regularity!

WHAT TO SEE IN SYRACUSE, BETWEEN HISTORY AND MODERNITY

Downtown Syracuse revolves around Armory square, (which, mind you, is an area and not a square) and Clinton Square (this one is a square). Begin your exploration of the city right here, where from November to March visitors will also find a beautiful ice skating rink, and continue on to the Niagara Mohawk Building, an art deco building completed in 1932 that originally served as the headquarters of the Niagara Hudson Electric Company.

Tra le cose da vedere a Syracuse spicca proprio questo edificio, nato per essere "una cattedrale di luce" e, come tale, vanta diversi tocchi architettonici per assicurarsi che luccichi, brilli e risplenda in ogni modo possibile.

Among the things to see in Syracuse, do not miss this particular building, which was created to be "a cathedral of light" and, as such, boasts several architectural touches to make sure it shine and sparkles in every way possible.

E Poi c'è Armory Square, il vero downtown ed una delle aree da non perdere a Syracuse. Qui troverete ristoranti, cafè e locali per un drink, ma anche uno dei teatri più importanti dello stato, il Landmark Theatre, costruito nel 1926. 

And then there is Armory Square, the real downtown and one of the must-see areas in Syracuse. Here you will find restaurants, cafes and places for nightlife, but also one of the state's most important theaters, the Landmark Theatre, built in 1926.

Poco ad est di downtown, non perdetevi nemmeno l'immenso campus della Syracuse University (i mitici "orange"), ed in particolare lo spettacolare Carrier Dome, la casa dello sport della città. Ecco, questo non è un palazzetto dello sport qualunque, è un tempio. Non solo è il più grande degli Stati Uniti, ma vanta record di ogni tipo. 

Just east of downtown, don't miss the huge campus of Syracuse University (the legendary "oranges") and in particular the spectacular Carrier Dome, the city's home of sports. Here, this is not just any sports hall, it is a temple. It is not only the largest in the United States, but it also boasts records of all kinds.

E per cena? Beh, se amate il barbeque non perdetevi Dinosaur Bbq che è un'autentica istituzione nello stato di New York e che a Brooklyn è una sorta di "must" quando si visita New York City. Ma se volete qualcosa di particolare (e di economico) dirigetevi appena sotto Armory Square, lungo South Salina Street. Qui, in un piccolo centro commerciale, troverete Habiba's Ethiopian Kitchen, dove ho sperimentato la buonissima cucina etiope...

And for dinner? Well, if you love barbeque, don't miss Dinosaur Bbq, which is a real institution in the state of New York and is sort of a "must" in Brooklyn when visiting New York City. But if you want something special (and inexpensive) head just below Armory Square, along South Salina Street. Here, in a small shopping mall, you will find Habiba's Ethiopian Kitchen, where I experienced the delicious Ethiopian cuisine...

Se amate la natura, i laghi, ma allo stesso tempo avete voglia di visitare alcune tra le cantine vinicole più rinomate al mondo, c'è un luogo davvero magico negli Stati Uniti che fa al caso vostro, la regione newyorchese dei Finger Lakes, undici laghi di origine glaciale situati nel nord dello stato che sono da sempre una delle più popolari mete turistiche, sia d'estate che d'inverno, di tutta la east coast. E, mentre i nomi degli undici laghi sono tutti riconducibili alle prime popolazioni di nativi che abitarono la zona (il Cayuga ed il Seneca Lake sono tra le altre cose anche tra i più profondi degli Usa!), il nome della regione è invece legato alla posizione geografica dei laghi stessi. Già, perchè buona parte di essi ricordarono ai primi cartografi della zona le dita (in inglese "finger") di una mano e da quel momento sono, di fatto, diventati, i "Finger Lakes". E tra le cose da non perdere quando si visita il New York State ci sono proprio loro...

NEXT STOP: Green Lakes State Park (9 miles)

If you love nature, lakes, but at the same time you fell like visiting some of the most renowned wineries in the world, there is a truly magical place in the United States that is right for you, the New York's Finger Lakes Region, eleven glacial lakes located in the northern part of the state that have always been one of the most popular tourist destinations, both in summer and winter, of the entire east coast. And while the names of the eleven lakes can all be traced back to the earliest native peoples who inhabited the area (Cayuga and Seneca Lake are also among the deepest in the U.S.), the name of the region, on the other hand, is related to the geographical location of the lakes. That's right, because a good portion of them kind of reminded early cartographers of fingers of one hand and have since become, in fact, the "Finger Lakes." And they are definitey among the things not to miss when visiting New York State...

COSA VEDERE NEI DINTORNI DI SYRACUSE - IL GREEN LAKES STATE PARK

Prima di addentrarci nel cuore dei Finger Lakes, una volta lasciata Syracuse vi consiglio di spostarvi ad est, e poi successivamente a sud-est, della quinta città più grande dello stato perché sono davvero tante le attrazioni imperdibili nei suoi dintorni. In particolar modo il Green Lakes State Park (8 dollari a veicolo) che vanta i due laghi più insoliti e sicuramente più belli di tutto lo stato di New York. Due laghi glaciali (Round Lake e Green Lake) circondati da foreste, tra i pochi negli Usa ad essere meromitici, ovvero con strati che non si mescolano mai, rendendoli di fatto davvero fotogenici grazie alla tonalità verde-bluastra degna dei migliori laghi alpini. 

WHAT TO SEE AROUND SYRACUSE - GREEN LAKES STATE PARK

Before delving into the heart of the Finger Lakes, once you leave Syracuse I recommend moving east, and then later southeast of the state's fifth-largest city because there are so many must-see attractions around it. Especially Green Lakes State Park ($8 per vehicle), which boasts the two most unusual and certainly most beautiful lakes in the entire New York State. Two glacial lakes (Round Lake and Green Lake) surrounded by forests, among the few in the U.S. to be meromictic: it means that their layers never mix, making them, in fact, truly photogenic thanks to the bluish-green hue worthy of the best alpine lakes.

E, mentre il Green Lake, pur senza perdere la sua bellezza, è un lago che offre servizi anche per la famiglia (un bar-ristorante, una spiaggia, la possibilità di nuotare, noleggiare un kayak, praticare il golf o sci di fondo nei mesi invernali...), il Round Lake è decisamente più primitivo. Non a caso è stato nominato nel 1973 National Natural Landmark per la sua unicità e bellezza, nonché per i numerosi alberi secolari che costeggiano le sue rive. 

While Green Lake, whitout losing its beauty, is a lake that also offers servicrs and amenities for the family (a restaurant, a beach, the possibility of swimming, renting a kayak, golfing or cross-country skiing during winter...), Round Lake is decidedly more primitive. Not surprisingly, it was named a National Natural Landmark in 1973 for its uniqueness and beauty, as well as for the many ancient trees that line its shores.

Entrambi i laghi offrono un sentiero che li costeggia e che, se percorsi interamente (la lunghezza è di 5 km), porterà il visitatore a seguire una sorta di "8" dalla durata di circa un'ora e mezza, comprese le soste (e ne farete tante...) per scattare la miglior foto possibile. Un sentiero ancor più lungo (13 km) segue l'andamento dei due laghi e prosegue nella foresta. Una volta raggiunto il secondo lago, il Round Lake, ricordatevi che non troverete alcuna infrastruttura. Solo natura. E che natura...

NEXT STOP: Chittenango (6 miles)

Both lakes offer a trail that runs alongside them. The total length of the trail is 5 km and is a kind of a double loop (a "8") and it takes about one hour and half to complete it, including stops to take the best pictures. An even longer trail (13 km) follows the course of the two lakes and continues into the forest. Once you reach the second lake, Round Lake, remember that you will find no services. Only nature and a bunch of benches. 

Poco lontano dal parco troverete la piccola comunità di Chittenango, famosa per aver dato i natali a Lyman Frank Baum, autore de Il meraviglioso mago di Oz. Nella sua Main Street troverete anche un piccolo negozio a tema "il Mago di Oz", mentre ogni anno proprio qui si tiene un festival chiamato "Oz-Stravaganza!" in onore di Baum e della sua maggiore opera letteraria. Chittenago è tuttavia famosa anche per le Chittenango Falls, situate all'interno dei 197 acri del Chittenango Falls State Park (5 dollari a veicolo).

NEXT STOP: Cazenovia (9 miles)

Not far from the park, there's the small community of Chittenango, famous for being the birthplace of Lyman Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. On its Main Street you will certainly notice a small store themed "the Wizard of Oz," while every year. just right here, there is a festival called "Oz-Stravaganza!" in honor of Baum and his major literary work. However, Chittenago is also famous for the Chittenango Falls, located within the 197-acre Chittenango Falls State Park ($5 per vehicle).

COSA VEDERE NELLA REGIONE DEI FINGER LAKES 

CAZENOVIA, "THE COOLEST SMALL TOWN IN AMERICA"

Ma in questa area a sud-est di Syracuse, la cittadina da visitare è sicuramente Cazenovia, che mi ha sin da subito incuriosito dopo aver scoperto che niente meno che Budget Traveler l'ha definita "the coolest Small Town in America", ovvero la più bella tra le piccole cittadine americane. Non avrei davvero mai potuto escluderla dall'itinerario nel New York State e, a conti fatti, devo ammettere che tale scelta si è rivelata fortunata. Devo anche ammettere di essere stato molto fortunato perchè l'ho visitata di domenica (ed in estate) e nel suo cuore pulsante, ovvero il Lakeland Park separa la via principale della città (Albany Street) con il Cazenovia Lake, si stava svolgendo un concerto di musica country locale, con food truck ed un atmosfera davvero di "vacanza".

WHAT TO SEE IN THE FINGER LAKES REGION 

CAZENOVIA, "THE COOLEST SMALL TOWN IN AMERICA"

But in this area southeast of Syracuse, the town to visit is definitely Cazenovia, which immediately intrigued me after discovering that Budget Traveler called it "the coolest small town in America." I really could not have excluded it from my itinerary in New York State, and on balance, I must admit that such a move was the right one. I must also admit that I was very lucky because I visited Cazenovia on a Sunday (in the summer) and in its beating heart, that is Lakeland Park, a park that separates the town's main street (Albany Street) with Cazenovia Lake, a local country music concert was taking place, with food trucks and a truly vacation atmosphere.

Ed ovviamente con solo gente del posto intorno a me. Difficile chiedere di più, da una cittadina che regala davvero un salto indietro nel tempo. Già, perchè sebbene le persone e lo stile di vita siano ovviamente moderni, l'architettura e il paesaggio rurale forniscono rappresentano quell'anima vera dell'America che tende a piacere tantissimo al turista europeo. Il quartiere storico di Cazenovia è rappresentato da Albany Street, l'arteria est-ovest del downtown cittadino, che parte proprio dal Cazenovia Lake e di conseguenza dal Lakeland Park. 

NEXT STOP: Critz Farms (4.3 miles)

And of course with only locals around me. There's nothing better than this.  It's hard to ask for more, because this small town really gives a step back in time. Although the people and the lifestyle are obviously modern, the architecture and rural landscape they provide represent that true soul of America that i really enjoy while visiting the United States. Cazenovia's historic district is represented by Albany Street, the east-west artery of the city's downtown, which starts right from Cazenovia Lake and consequently Lakeland Park.

LE MIGLIORI FARM DEI FINGER LAKES

 ALLA RICERCA DEL MIGLIOR SIDRO DI MELE

Ormai mi sto avvicinando a grandi falcate al cuore della regione dei Finger Lakes ma c'è ancora qualche chicca da esplorare e da raccontare. Già, perchè quest'area del New York State è famosa non solo per la produzione vinicola, ma anche per le tantissime aziende che producono e vendono il sidro di mele. E, proprio 4 miglia a sud di Cazenovia, c'è una delle più famose "farm", la Critz Farms and Critz Farms Brewing & Cider Co., un'azienda agricola produce sidro di mele e birra davvero gustosi. Qui val la pena fermarsi per diversi motivi: se state viaggiando con i bambini che potranno giocare con gli animali o nel bellissimo parco giochi, o se siete alla ricerca di buona musica country dal vivo... ma anche e soprattutto se volete assaggiare il loro sidro e la loro birra nel cafè dell'azienda agricola. Ah, e non dimenticate che qui il primo sabato di agosto si svolge anche il Blueberry Jam Festival, il festival delle confetture di mirtilli.

THE BEST FINGER LAKES FARMS - LOOKING FOR THE BEST APPLE CIDER

I'm approaching the heart of the Finger Lakes region, but there are still a few tidbits to explore and to tell. That's right, because this area of New York State is famous not only for its wine production, but also for the many companies that make and sell apple cider. And, just four miles south of Cazenovia, there is one of the most famous farms, Critz Farms and Critz Farms Brewing & Cider Co, that produces a really tasty apple cider and beer. It's worth stopping here for several reasons: if you're traveling with kids, they can play with the animals or in the beautiful playground, if you're looking for good live country music, there is always something for you... but also and especially if you want to taste their cider and beer in the farm's cafe. And don't forget that the Blueberry Jam Festival is also held here on the first Saturday in August.

Circa 25 miglia ad ovest di Cazenovia, sulla strada verso i più grandi e famosi laghi dei Finger Lakes, c'è un'altra famosissima "farm", icona ormai dell'intera regione, la Beak & Skiff. Questa, se vogliamo, esteticamente è anche più accattivamente della precedente e, se siete fortunati (non le troverete sempre), potrete assaggiare oltre al sidro anche le mitiche donuts alla mela. Ma non è finita qui, potrete acquistare le mele all'interno dell' "Apple Barn", visitare l'Apple Hill General Store o assaggiare nella distilleria risalente al 1911 un ottimo Bourbon Whisky, Vodka e Gin. 

About 25 miles west of Cazenovia, on the way to the larger and more famous Finger Lakes, there is another very famous farm, now an icon of the entire region, the Beak & Skiff. This one, aesthetically, is even more appealing than the previous one and, if you are lucky (you won't always find them), you will be able to taste not only cider but also the legendary apple donuts. But that's not all, visitors can buy apples inside the Apple Barn, visit the Apple Hill General Store or taste in the distillery dating back to 1911 an excellent Bourbon Whiskey, Vodka and Gin.

Se non sarete in ritardo sulla tabella di marcia, avrete l'imbarazzo della scelta tra le cose da fare in questo tratto di Finger Lakes prima di raggiungere Geneva. Una possibilità è quella di fermarvi a  Skaneateles, situata proprio sulle sponde dell'omonimo lago. Oppure spingervi a nord per circa 40 miglia e visitare il Chimney Bluff State Park, sulla sponda meridionale del Lake Ontario. Il sentiero principale del parco (lungo 1.6 km) è quello che collega le due scogliere (Bluffs, appunto) a strapiombo sul lago Ontario, fatte di grandi formazioni argillose. Se amate la "wildlife" spostatevi invece solamente di pochi km rispetto a Skaneateles e percorrete la Wildlife Drive del Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, uno dei migliori esempi di boschi paludosi nel nord-est degli Stati Uniti. Il rifugio è l'habitat di di diverse specie di uccelli acquatici e migratori tra cui l'airone, ma anche di mammiferi quali il coyote, il procione, la volpe rossa e grigia, gli scoiattoli, i castori ed i pipistrelli. La wildlife drive è una strada di 3.5 miglia (5.6 km) a senso unico che permette di ammirare questi animali davvero da vicino e, per chi ama camminare, non perdetevi il semplice Seneca Trail che conduce alla Observation Tower. E, infine, per chi ha... fame, consiglio la Muranda Cheese Company (orario di apertura, dalle 10 alle 17), che produce e vende il formaggio più buono dello stato. Le loro varietà più ricercate sono sicuramente il British Cheddar, il Red Buddy ed il Gouda, tutti assaggiabili nel "Taste tour" che, nel 2023, prevede ben 17 formaggi al costo di 3 dollari. Sei dollari, invece, con l'aggiunta di un calice di vino. 

NEXT STOP: Geneva (37 miles)

La città più famosa dell'area è sicuramente Geneva, che poi è dove ho scelto di spendere le mie due notti in questa bellissima regione. Nel cuore della pittoresca regione dei Finger Lakes, sul bordo settentrionale del lago Seneca, si trova questa storica, affascinante e pittoresca cittadina ricca di aziende vinicole pluripremiate e un bellissimo castello del XVIII e che vanta scena gastronomica davvero interessante.

If you are not behind schedule, you will be spoiled for choice of things to do in this stretch of the Finger Lakes before reaching Geneva. One option is to stop at Skaneateles, located right on the shores of the lake of the same name. Or push north about 40 miles and visit the Chimney Bluff State Park, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. The park's main trail (1.6 miles roundtrip) is the one that connects the two bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario, made of large clay formations. If you love wildlife, move just north of Skaneateles and take the Wildlife Drive within the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, one of the best examples of swamp forests in the northeastern United States. The refuge is habitat for several species of waterfowl and migratory birds including heron, as well as mammals such as coyote, raccoon, red and gray fox, squirrels, beavers and bats. The wildlife drive is a 3.5-mile (5.6-kilometer) one-way road that allows visitors to really see these animals up close, and for those who like to walk, don't miss the easy Seneca Trail that leads to the Observation Tower. And, finally, for those who are just hungry, I recommend the Muranda Cheese Company (opening hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), which makes and sells the finest cheese in the state. Their most sought-after varieties are definitely British Cheddar, Red Buddy and Gouda, all of which can be sampled: in 2023, the taste tour features as many as 17 cheeses for $3. If you want to add a glass of win the price is 6 dollars.

The most famous city in the area is definitely Geneva, which is then where I chose to spend my two nights in this beautiful region. In the heart of the picturesque Finger Lakes region, on the northern edge of Seneca Lake, there's this historic, charming and picturesque town filled with award-winning wineries and a beautiful 18th-century castle and boasting a really interesting food scene.

USA SUMMER 2023 - ON THE ROAD ON THE EAST COAST: NEW YORK STATE, VERMONT, PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW JERSEY (Day 11: Geneva - Geneva, New York State)

La giornata dei Finger Lakes è finalmente arrivata. Ne ho scelti due, i più famosi e più grandi tra gli undici laghi che compongono la regione (Seneca e Cayuga), e li ho visitati in lungo in largo, tra aziende vinicole e spettacolari wine tasting, città molto interessanti (Ithaca) e la solita incredibile natura che caratterizza questa parte del nord-est americano. E mi son bastate ventiquattro ore per capire che... non solo un giorno per visitare quest'area è troppo poco, ma che forse neppure una settimana basterebbe per entrare appieno nello spirito di questi splendidi laghi che assomigliano a tante dita di una mano. E sono ben undici. E' la "89" a farmi compagnia durante il mattino, una strada scenografica che costeggia il Cayuga Lake e che mi condurrà sino alle porte di Ithaca. Prima di visitare una delle cascate più belle dell'intero viaggio, non posso però non menzionare la State Bakery + Smokehouse, una panetteria che vende non solo prodotti da forno come croissant e torte ma anche carne affumicata. E, sempre lungo la "89" ad una ventina di chilometri a sud di Seneca Falls, regalatevi una sosta anche alla Liquid State Brewing Company - North Shore (non dimenticatevi mai di come anche la birra sia una sorta di religione nello stato di New York), una brewery con "vista lago" famosa non solo per le sue fantastiche birre, ma anche per offrire il "miglior fried chicken mc and cheese dello stato" tramite i food truck presenti nello spazio all'aperto. 

NEXT STOP: Toughannock Falls State Park (36 miles)

Finger Lakes day has finally come. I chose two, the most famous and largest of the eleven lakes that make up the region (Seneca and Cayuga), and I visited them far and wide, among wineries and spectacular wine tastings, very interesting cities (Ithaca) and the usual amazing nature that characterizes this part of the American north-east. And twenty-four hours were enough for me to understand that... one day is not only too short to visit this area, but maybe not even a week would be enough to fully enter into the spirit of these splendid lakes that resemble many fingers on a hand. They are eleven! It's the "89" the road that keeps me company during the morning, a scenic drive that runs along Cayuga Lake and leads me to the gates of Ithaca. Before visiting one of the most beautiful waterfalls of the entire trip, I cannot fail to mention the State Bakery + Smokehouse, a bakery that sells not only baked goods such as croissants and cakes but also smoked meat. And, still along the "89", about twenty kilometers south of Seneca Falls, treat yourself to a break at the Liquid State Brewing Company - North Shore (never forget how beer is also a sort of religion in the state of New York ), a brewery with an amazing lake view, famous not only for its fantastic beers, but also for offering the "best fried chicken mc and cheese in the state" thanks to a food truck located in the outdoor space.

Ma la grande attrazione di questa strada è il Toughannock Falls State Park, sicuramente l'highlight a livello naturale di questi giorni di viaggio. Qui si viene per ammirare la maestosità della Taughannock Falls, una cascata alta ben 60 metri che cade a picco dallle pareti della gola del canyon, garantendosi di fatto un posto nella top 10 dei luoghi naturali da vedere nello stato di New York. Ci sono diverse possibilità per ammirare le cascate: un primo modo è dall'altro della gola, evitando dunque di entrare nello State Park e di pagare la "fee" d'ingresso di 7 dollari a vettura. L'indirizzo è 2381 Taughannock Park Road ed il luogo è conosciuto come Taughannock Falls Overlook View Point, dove troverete tra le altre cose anche il visitor center del parco.

But the great attraction of this road is definitely the Toughannock Falls State Park, certainly the natural highlight of these days of travel. People come here to admire the majesty of the Taughannock Falls, a 60 meter high waterfall that falls sheer from the walls of the canyon gorge: it deserves a place in the top 10 of the natural sights to see in New York state. There are several possibilities to admire the waterfalls: the first way is from the other side of the gorge, thus avoiding entering the State Park and paying the entrance fee (7 dollars per vehicle). The address is 2381 Taughannock Park Road and the place is known as Taughannock Falls Overlook View Point, where you will also find the park's visitor center, among other things.

La vista però ovviamente non vale quella "da sotto", ovvero dopo aver percorso il sentiero di circa 1 km (interamente pianeggiante) che conduce proprio sotto la cascata dopo averne superata una più piccola, la Little o Lower Falls. Una terza possibilità è quella di percorrere nella sua interezza il sentiero ad anello del Taughannock Falls Gorge (2.9 km, dislivello di 60 metri) all'interno del bosco, un percorso che si snoda proprio sul bordo della gola. 

NEXT STOP: Ithaca (9.6 miles)

However, the view is obviously not the same as from below.Just follow che flat path (1 km) which leads right under the waterfall after passing a smaller one, the Little or Lower Falls. A third possibility is to follow the Taughannock Falls Gorge loop trail in its entirety (2.9 km) inside the woods, a path that winds right along the edge of the gorge.

COSA VEDERE A ITHACA

LA CITTA' UNIVERSITARIA SULLE SPONDE DEL CAYUGA LAKE

Se a nord dei principali Finger Lakes sono diverse le città da visitare (Seneca Falls, Geneva, Canandaigua, Auburn e Skaneateles su tutte), a sud dei due laghi che ho scelto di visitare sono Watkins Glen e soprattutto Ithaca i principali punti di riferimento. E proprio Ithaca è una rilassata cittadina universitaria sulle sponde del Cayuga Lake, famosa non solo per la sua università (la famosissima Cornell University, all'interno del cui campus potrete visitare il Cornell Botanical Gardens), ma anche per le bellezze naturali ed il suo vibrante downtown. 

WHAT TO SEE IN ITHACA

THE UNIVERSITY CITY ON THE BANKS OF CAYUGA LAKE

If to the north of the main Finger Lakes there are several cities to visit (Seneca Falls, Geneva, Canandaigua, Auburn and Skaneateles above all), to the south of the two lakes I chose to visit, there are only Watkins Glen and above all Ithaca. The last one is a relaxed university town on the shores of Cayuga Lake, famous not only for its university (the very famous Cornell University, within whose campus you can visit the Cornell Botanical Gardens), but also for its natural beauties and its vibrant downtown.

E, la visita della città comincia proprio dal suo centro storico, il principale luogo di ritrovo per gli abitanti di Ithaca. Distesa su più isolati, l'area pedonale (una rarità negli Stati Uniti) è decisamente piacevole, grazie ai tanti negozi, ai ristoranti, ai bar, ai teatri ed installazioni create dalla Carla Sagan Planet Walk. L'area è conosciuta anche come Ithaca Commons e si sviluppa principalmente lungo West State Street. 

The visit to the city begins right from its historic center, the main meeting place for the inhabitants of Ithaca. Spread over several blocks, the pedestrian area (a rarity in the United States) is decidedly pleasant, thanks to the many shops, restaurants, bars, theaters and installations created by the Carla Sagan Planet Walk. The area is also known as Ithaca Commons and is mainly located along West State Street.

Poco fuori downtown prende il via anche il rinomato Cascadilla Creek, un percorso attraverso una delle gole più pittoresche dei Finger Lakes che collega il centro città con la Cornell University. Questo percorso, regalato alla città da Robert Treman nel 1909, fa parte proprio del Treman State Park ed è un insieme di sentieri, scale in pietra, bellissimi ponti e piccole cascate (ben sei) lunghi quasi 2 miglia. Io ne ho percorso un pezzo, cominciando la mia avventura dal versante ovest del percoso, quello che prende il via lungo Lynn Street e ne ho percorso un pezzettino prima di rientrare e dirigermi verso la seconda attrazione cittadina, le Ithaca Falls. 

Just outside downtown, there's the renowned Cascadilla Creek, a path through one of the most picturesque gorges of the Finger Lakes that connects the city center with Cornell University. This route, donated to the city by Robert Treman in 1909, is part of Treman State Park and is a set of paths, stone stairs, beautiful bridges and small waterfalls (six) almost 2 miles long. I walked part of it, starting from the western side of the path, the one that starts along Lynn Street, and I covered a small part of it before returning and heading towards the city's second attraction, the Ithaca Falls.

E no, non stupitevi del fatto che lo slogan cittadino sia "Ithaca is Gorges", perchè qui davvero gole e canyon mancano davvero mai. E, da una di queste, nascono anche le Ithaca Falls, un'imponente cascata visibile dopo aver percorso un brevissimo e semplice sentiero di 0.3 miglia. Ma Ithaca è anche cultura, oltre alla natura. Non dimenticatevi quindi di visitare l'Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, progettato da IM Pei, il Johnson Museum of Art e, se volete entrare a stretto contatto con la comunità, anche il bellissimo Ithaca Farmers Market, aperto il giovedì, il sabato e la domenica. 

NEXT STOP: Watkins Glen (28 miles)

Don't be surprised that the city slogan is "Ithaca is Gorges", because gorges and canyons are truly never lacking here. And, from one of these, you'll notice the Ithaca Falls, an imposing waterfall visible after following a very short and simple 0.3 mile trail. But Ithaca is also culture, in addition to nature. So don't forget to visit the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, designed by IM Pei, the Johnson Museum of Art and, if you want to get in close contact with the community, also the beautiful Ithaca Farmers Market, open on Thursdays, Saturdays and the Sunday.

Per non togliere spazio alle tante cantine che spopolano lungo il Seneca Lake ed il Cayuga Lake, ho dedicato poco spazio a tutto ciò che ci si trova di fronte nel tratto tra Ithaca, sulle sponde meridionali del Cayuga Lake, con Watkins Glen, situata invece su quelle meridionali del Seneca Lake. Ma, se avrete tempo, non dimenticatevi di fare una sosta da Dennis' Homemade Ice Cream per un ottimo gelato, di vistare le Lucifer Falls (il sentiero è un "loop trail" di 1.8 km all'interno del Robert Treman State Park) e di ammirare il Newfield Covered Bridge, il più antico ponte coperto ancora aperto al traffico veicolare quotidiano. 

I decided to spend the last part of the day some of the many wineries that are popular along Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake, which means that i had to dedicate very little space to all the stops along the stretch of road that connects Ithaca, on the southern shores of Cayuga Lake, with Watkins Glen, located instead on the southern ones of Seneca Lake. But, if you have time, don't forget to stop at Dennis' Homemade Ice Cream for an excellent ice cream, to visit Lucifer Falls (the trail is a 1.8 km and is a "loop trail" inside Robert Treman State Park) and to admire the Newfield Covered Bridge, the oldest surviving covered bridge still open to daily vehicular traffic.

TRA VELOCITA' ED IL PIU' FAMOSO STATE PARK DEI FINGER LAKES

Solitamente, Watkins Glen è sulla bocca di tutti gli americani una volta all'anno, quando sul circuito automobilistico del Watkins Glen International sfrecciano i bolidi del campionato Nascar (molti anni fa qui si svolgeva anche il Gran Premio di Formula 1), ma nel resto dell'anno questa città è nota per essere la casa del più famoso State Park dell'intera regione dei Finger Lakes, il Watkins Glen State Park, capace nel 2015 di arrivare terzo nel sondaggio voluto per i suoi lettori da Usa Today tra tutti gli State Park Americani. 

THINGS TO DO IN WATKINS GLEN 

BETWEEN SPEED AND THE MOST FAMOUS STATE PARK IN THE FINGER LAKES

Usually, Watkins Glen is on everyone's lips once a year, when the NASCAR championship cars whiz by on the Watkins Glen International car circuit (many years ago, the America's Formula 1 Grand Prix also took place here!), but in the rest of the year this city is known for being the home of the most famous State Park in the entire Finger Lakes region, Watkins Glen State Park, which in 2015 came third in the poll wanted for its readers by USA Today among all the State Park Americans.

Il merito di questi risultati è dovuto soprattutto al fulcro di questo parco grande ben 3.15 km2, ovvero il Gorge Trail, un sentiero di 3 km tra andata e ritorno (ma è possibile completare il loop seguendo gli altri due sentieri del parco, il Southern Rim ed l'Indian Trails) all'interno di una strettissima gola, al cui interno scorre il Glen Creek.

The credit for these great results is due above all to the cornerstone of this 3.15 km2 park, namely the Gorge Trail, a 3 km round trip path (but it is possible to complete the loop by following the other two trails in the park, the Southern Rim and the Indian Trails) inside a very narrow gorge, through which the Glen Creek flows.

Il sentiero comincia a ridosso del Visitor Center e, nella parte iniziale, consente di conoscere la storia di questa gola, aperta al pubblico nel lontano 1863 ed acquistato dallo stato di New York nel 1906. Il sentiero che si sviluppa all'interno della Watkins Glen Gorge permette di ammirare ben 19 cascate e, nonostante dovrete superare ben 800 scalini, è perfetto anche e soprattutto per i bambini che si divertiranno a camminare in totale sicurezza. I punti di riferimento del percorso sono il Sentry Bridge, che segna l'ingresso nella gola, la Cavern Cascade, l'affascinante Spiral Tunnel, Central Cascade e poi ovviamente il luogo più iconico di tutto il Watkins Glen State Park, le Rainbow Falls. 

NEXT STOPS: Fox Run vineyards & Ventosa Vineyards

The trail begins close to the Visitor Center and, in the initial part, allows visitors to learn about the history of this gorge, opened to the public way back in 1863 and purchased by the state of New York in 1906. The trail that develops within the Watkins Glen Gorge involves 19 waterfalls and, although the 800 steps, it is also and above all perfect for children who would enjoy walking in complete safety. The landmarks of the route are the Sentry Bridge, which marks the entrance to the gorge, the Cavern Cascade, the fascinating Spiral Tunnel, Central Cascade and then obviously the most iconic place in the whole of Watkins Glen State Park, the Rainbow Falls.

LE MIGLIORI CANTINE DEI FINGER LAKES

La premessa è doverosa. Il tempo speso prima nel visitare le bellezze di Ithaca e dei suoi dintorni e poi nel Watkins Glen State Park, unito al solo giorno a disposizione per questa splendida area, mi ha obbligato a visitare solamente due delle cantine vinicole che avevo minuziosamente preparato nei minimi dettagli. E la scelta è ricaduta su quelle che semplicemente avrebbero chiuso un po' più tardi nel pomeriggio, fermo restando i soliti orari americani molto diversi da quelli europei (diverse cantine chiudevano i battenti alle ore 17 nonostante fosse estate). E dunque, prima di parlare delle due che ho scelto di visitare, vi elenco anche le altre, tutte meritevoli di una sosta anche veloce durante il vostro viaggio eno-gastronomico nel territorio dei Finger Lakes. Il tutto aggiornato ad agosto 2023. Ah, la strada numero "14", quella che collega Watkins Glen con Geneva non solo è un susseguirsi di aziende vinicole, ma regala panorami davvero incredibili. Ed al sottoscritto anche un incredibile arcobaleno.

THE BEST WINERIES IN THE FINGER LAKES

The premise is necessary. The time spent in visiting the beauties of Ithaca and its surroundings and then visiting the Watkins Glen State Park, combined with the only single day available for this amazing area, forced me to visit only two of the wine cellars that I had meticulously prepared to the last detail. And the choice fell on those that would close a little later in the afternoon, without prejudice to the usual American opening hours which are very different from the European ones (several wineries closed their doors at 5pm despite it being summer!). So, before talking about the two wineries that I chose to visit, I will also list the others, all worthy of even a quick stop during your food and wine journey in the Finger Lakes area. All updated in August 2023. Well, the road number "14", the one that connects Watkins Glen with Geneva is not only a succession of wineries, but offers truly incredible views...

- La Hazlitt 1852 Vineyard, 10 miglia a nord di Watkins Glen, offre il "flight", ovvero la degustazione di più vini al prezzo di 10 dollari. Disponibile anche il singolo calice, da abbinare anche a qualche piatto come ad esempio il Grilled Cheese.

- La Three Brothers Wineries and Estates, 7 miglia a sud-est di Geneva, offre anch'essa sia il "flight" che il singolo calice. Se siete fortunati, al suo esterno troverete anche un food truck. E non dimenticate di consultare il sito ufficiale perchè la cantina organizza diversi eventi

- La Barnstormer Winery, 4 miglia a nord di Watkins Glen, offre il "flight" a 12 dollari ed è possibile prenotare anche il cibo in abbinamento. Con 15 dollari ti viene offerto anche il cesto per il picnic. Ultimo ingresso per il wine tasting alle 16.30

- La Glenora Wine Cellar, 8 miglia a nord di Watkins Glen, esce un po' dai soliti binari perchè oltre ad offrire il consueto wine-tasting, regala la possibilità di partecipare con 18 dollari all'assaggio dei vini abbinato al... cioccolato. Sì, avete sentito bene!

- Hazlitt 1852 Vineyard, 10 miles north of Watkins Glen, offers flights, which is tasting multiple wines for $10. A single glass of wine is also available, to be combined with some dishes such as the Grilled Cheese.

- Three Brothers Wineries and Estates, 7 miles southeast of Geneva, also offers both the flight and the single glass. If you're lucky enough, you'll also find a food truck outside the winery. And don't forget to ccheck the official website because they may organize an event on the day you want to visit the winery

- Barnstormer Winery, 4 miles north of Watkins Glen, offers the flight for $12 and you can also pre-order food to match. With 15 dollars you also get a picnic basket. Last entry for the wine tasting is at 4.30pm

- The Glenora Wine Cellar, 8 miles north of Watkins Glen, goes a little off the beaten track because in addition to the usual wine-tasting, it offers the opportunity to participate for 18 dollars in the tasting of wines paired with... chocolate . Yes, you heard right!

Ultime, ma non per importanza (anzi...) le due che ho scelto di visitare, entrambe non lontane da Geneva, ma sulle opposte sponde del Seneca Lake. La prima è la famosissima Fox Run Vineyards, un'esperienza nel vero senso della parola sia per la vista (bellissimo il contesto), che per il palato. Già, perchè questa azienda vinicola, oltre a produrre ottimi vini, consente di effettuare il "wine tasting" abbinando ad ogni singolo vino un piccolo assaggio di piatti davvero squisiti. Per chi volesse qualcosa in più, è possibile pranzare nel cafè della Winery.

Last, but not least, the two wineries I chose to visit, both not far from Geneva, but on the opposite shores of Seneca Lake. The first one is the very famous Fox Run Vineyards, an experience in every sense of the word both for the sight (beautiful setting) and for the palate. Yes, because this winery, in addition to producing excellent wines, allows visitors to experience the wine tasting by pairing each individual wine with a small taste of truly exquisite dishes. For those who want something more, it is possible to have lunch in the excellent café.

L'altra cantina che ho visitato, dal nome italianissimo, è la Ventosa Winery, con vista davvero affascinante sul Seneca Lake. Qui potrete davvero sbizzarrivi, tra il wine tastin, un buon calice da gustare nello splendido patio o pranzare al Cafè Toscana. E non dimenticatevi che spesso e volentieri qui troverete anche live music. Cosa volete di più?

The other winery I chose to visit, with its very Italian name, was the Ventosa Winery, with a truly fascinating view of Seneca Lake. Here you can really indulge yourself, between the wine tasting at the bar, a good glass to taste on the splendid patio or lunch at the Cafè Toscana. And don't forget that visitors will often also find live music here. What could be better?

SENECA FALLS - LA CITTA' DEI DIRITTI DELLE DONNE

Se nel post precedente ho parlato di Geneva, una delle due principali città di quest'area dei Finger Lakes, oggi è la volta della sua "sorella", ovvero Seneca Falls, famosa per aver svolto un ruolo di primo piano nella lotta per i diritti delle donne. Elizabeth Cady, una delle organizzatrici della Convenzione sui diritti delle donne di Seneca Falls del 1948, visse proprio qui parte della sua vita ed insieme ad Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Martha Coffin Wright, Mary Ann M'Clintock e Jane Hunt fu di fatto al comando della prima Convention sui diritti delle donne, che si svolse presso la Weslevan Methodist Chapel di Seneca Falls. 

SENECA FALLS - THE CITY OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS

In the previous post I talked about Geneva, one of the two main cities in this area of the Finger Lakes, but now it's time to talk about its "sister", Seneca Falls, which is famous for having played a leading role in the fight of women's rights. Elizabeth Cady, one of the organizers of the 1948 Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention, lived part of her life in this city and together with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Martha Coffin Wright, Mary Ann M'Clintock and Jane Hunt was the architect of the first Women's Rights Convention, which took place at the Westwood Methodist Chapel in Seneca Falls.
