"Ma che belle foto! Sai che non pensavo che fosse così bella". Sono tanti i messaggi di questo tipo che ho ricevuto dopo la due giorni a Belfast, la sorprendente capitale dell'Irlanda del nord. Una città vivace, ricca di storia e di quel fascino "lontano dai riflettori" che l'hanno fatta entrare di diritto tra le mie preferite del nord Europa. Certo, mi ha aiutato anche un meteo decisamente favorevole, ma tutte le mie aspettative di trovarmi di fronte una città "triste" e "poco coinvolgente" sono sostanzialmente (e fortunatamente) evaporate dopo pochi minuti, perchè... Belfast è davvero molto, molto bella! Qui storia e cultura si fondono alla perfezione, tra musei ben curati e pittoresche stradine acciottolate, quartieri un tempo periferici e non proprio tra i più sicuri, diventati ora ricchi di cafè, pub e ristoranti. Il mio consiglio? Andateci!
"Oh, those are a lot of amazing pictures. You know, I didn't think it was that beautiful". I got so many such messages after the two days spent in Belfast, the amazing capital of Northern Ireland. A vibrant city, rich in history and that “out of the spotlight” charm that made it rightfully among my favorites in Northern Europe. Of course, I was also helped by the sunny weather, but all my expectations of being visiting a “sad” and “uninvolving” city basically (and fortunately) evaporated after a few minutes, because... Belfast is really, really beautiful! History and culture blend to perfection here, between well-kept museums and picturesque cobblestone streets, neighborhoods that were once suburban and not exactly among the safest, which have now become full of cafes, pubs and restaurants. My tip? Just visit it as soon as you can!
COSA VEDERE A BELFAST
IL DAY 1 TRA TITANIC MUSEUM, BELFAST CASTLE E CENTRO STORICO
Due giorni pieni sono sufficienti per visitare il meglio di quello che Belfast ha da offrire, anche se aver un terzo giorno a disposizione renderebbe la visita sicuramente più completa. L'avventura comincia dal lungo fiume Lagan, dove è situato il mio alloggio. Una scelta perfetta (trovata su airbnb) sia logisticamente, sia economicamente visti gli altissimi prezzi degli hotel (diciamo pure assurdi!) in città. Percorrere il lungofiume, insieme agli abitanti del luogo che fanno jogging o semplicemente passeggiano mi aiutano ad entrare in contatto con una città dai ritmi poco frenetici e molto dedita al lavoro, sin dai tempi in cui Belfast era (per certi versi lo è ancora) capitale mondiale dell'industria tessile e dei cantieri navali. Ed è proprio nel Titanic Quarter, il quartiere del porto, che mi sto dirigendo, per visitare il museo più bello ed intrigante dell'intera Belfast, il Titanic Belfast, che ogni anno attrae oltre 3 milioni di visitatori.
WHAT TO SEE IN BELFAST
DAY 1 BETWEEN TITANIC MUSEUM, BELFAST CASTLE AND OLD TOWN
Two full days are enough to visit the best of what Belfast has to offer, although having a third day available would certainly make the visit more complete. The adventure begins at the riverside Lagan, where my accommodation is located. A perfect choice (found on airbnb) both logistically and economically, given the very high (let's just say absurd!) hotel prices in the city. Walking along the riverfront, along with the locals jogging or simply strolling, help me get in touch with a city with an unhurried pace and very dedicated to work, from the days when Belfast was (in some ways still is) the textile and shipyard capital of the world. I am heading to the Titanic Quarter, the harbor district, for the most beautiful and intriguing museum in all of Belfast, Titanic Belfast, which attracts more than 3 million visitors each year.
Per raggiungere il museo dovrete raggiungere la zona a nord-est della città, quella portuale. Ad attendervi oltre alla scritta "Titanic", perfetta location per una foto ricordo, l'edificio che contiene tutta la storia del transatlantico più tristemente famoso al mondo. La struttura è composta da 3.000 pannelli di alluminio ed è stato costruito nel punto in cui la nave ha toccato l'acqua per la prima volta.
To get to the museum, visitors will have to reach the northeast area of the city. Waiting for you, in addition to the sign “Titanic” which is perfect location for a souvenir photo, there will be the building that contains the entire history of the world's most infamous ocean liner. The structure consists of 3,000 aluminum panels and was built on the spot where the ship first touched the water.
La prima parte del museo racconta la storia della città, ovvero quando Belfast era la capitale mondiale dell'industria tessile. Poi sarà solo e soltanto... Titanic, sin dai tempi in cui il cantiere Navale Harland & Wolff decise di costruire il transatlantico poi reso celebre dal film del regista James Cameron con Leonardo Di Caprio e Kate Winslet.
The first part of the museum tells the history of the city, when Belfast was the textile industry capital of the world. Then it will be just and only... Titanic, since the days when the Harland & Wolff shipyard decided to build the ocean liner later made famous by director James Cameron's movie starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet.
Il Titanic Belfast è un vero e proprio viaggio in nove gallerie, esposte su sei piani espositivi che ripercorrono l'intera grandezza della nave, dove il visitatore potrà rivivere la storia, la cronologia dei tragici fatti che portarono il transatlantico ad affondare in Nova Scotia e leggere le testimonianze dei sopravvissuti.
Titanic Belfast is a true journey through nine galleries, displayed on six exhibition floors tracing the ship's entire size, where visitors can relive the history, the chronology of the tragic events that led to the transatlantic sinking in Nova Scotia, and read the testimonies of survivors.
Non mancano pannelli interattivi, effetti speciali lungo il percorso ed anche una giostra, molto divertente, che vi porterà nel cuore della nave durante la sua costruzione. Sarete catapultati nel 1912, durante i giorni in cui il Titanic lasciò Belfast per il suo "viaggio di prova" fino a Southampton, dove cominciò il viaggio vero e proprio verso New York.
There is no shortage of interactive panels, special effects along the way, and even a coaster, which is great fun, that will take you to the heart of the ship during its construction. You will be catapulted back to 1912, during the days when Titanic left Belfast for the trial trip to Southampton, where it began the actual voyage to New York.
Capirete l'attesa di quei giorni, il grande seguito che ci fu e poi il naufragio lungo le coste canadesi della Nuova Scotia, quando il Titanic colpì un iceberg e affondò. Del vero Titanic potrete ammirare tra le altre cose, anche e soprattutto uno dei dodici giubbotti di salvataggio rimasti, il violino di uno dei musicisti di bordo e l'orologio da taschino di un passeggero di nome Joakim Johnson, rimasto fermo alle 01:37, momento in cui affondò nelle acque gelate dell'Oceano.
You will understand the anticipation of those days, the great following there, and then the shipwreck along the Canadian coast of New Scotia, when the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank. L'affondamento del Titanic cambiò ovviamente anche il mondo e il museo spiega cosa accadde in seguito alla tragedia, la sua eredità e le misure messe in atto per scongiurare il ripetersi di un simile disastro.
The sinking of the Titanic obviously changed the world as well, and the museum explains what happened in the aftermath of the tragedy, its legacy, and the measures put in place to prevent a repeat of such a disaster.
Lasciato il Titanic Belfast, una breve passeggiata lungo il fiume vi porterà, dopo aver attraversato il bellissimo Lagan Weir Footbridge, nel cuore del centro storico di Belfast. Io ho scelto di non fermarmi qui, ma di limitare, almeno per il momento la visita del centro storico con le due sculture presenti sul lungofiume, ovvero Big Fish e Beacon of Hope, vicinissime l'una con l'altra.
Leaving Titanic Belfast, a short walk along the river will take you, after crossing the beautiful Lagan Weir Footbridge, into the heart of Belfast's historic city center. I chose not to stop here, but just visit the two sculptures on the riverfront, namely Big Fish and Beacon of Hope, very close to each other.
Proprio a ridosso del fiume, in Donegall Quay, non potrete non notare questa scultura a forma di pesce in ceramica colorata, il Big Fish. Ogni piastrella racconta una storia della città ed in brevissimo tempo dalla sua costruzione è diventata uno dei simboli dell'intera Belfast. L'altra scultura, situata alla fine del Queen's Bridge, è Beacon of Hope, una scultura in acciaio alta 19 metri realizzata nel 2007 in Thanksgiving Square, la piazza dedicata al Giorno del Ringraziamento, combinando alcuni degli elementi architettonici chiave dell'originale Thanksgiving Square a Dallas, in Texas.
Just down by the river on Donegall Quay, you cannot fail to notice this colorful ceramic fish sculpture, the Big Fish. Each tile tells a story of the city and it has become in a very short time one of the symbols of the whole of Belfast. The other sculpture, located at the end of Queen's Bridge, is Beacon of Hope, a 19-meter-high steel sculpture created in 2007 in Thanksgiving Square, the square dedicated to Thanksgiving, combining some of the key architectural elements of the original Thanksgiving Square in Dallas, Texas.
Da qui vi consiglio di dirigervi al 59 di High Street, distante poche centinaia di metri dal Beacon of Hope. Lungo la strada non potrete non notare l'Albert Memorial Clock, una torre dell’orologio voluta per ricordare il Principe Alberto, defunto marito della Regina Vittoria.
From here, I recommend heading to 59 High Street, a few hundred meters away from the Beacon of Hope. Along the way, don't miss the the Albert Memorial Clock, a clock tower intended to remind Prince Albert, late husband of Queen Victoria.
Raggiunto il 59 di High Street, salite a bordo del bus a due piani (linea rossa: 1a, 1c, 1d e 1e) ed allontanatevi dal centro sino a raggiungere la fermata del Belfast Castle (20 minuti circa). A dir la verità sono due le fermate del castello, io vi consiglio di scendere all'andata alla fermata Belfast Castle, ammirate le belle casette con giardino della periferia di Belfast ed entrate nell'enorme e bellissimo parco che ospita il castello.
Once you get to the 59 of High Street, board the double-decker bus (red line: 1a, 1c, 1d and 1e) and ride away from the city center until you reach the Belfast Castle stop (about 20 minutes). Actually there are two castle stops, I recommend getting off at the Belfast Castle stop on the way out, admire the beautiful little garden houses on the outskirts of Belfast and enter the huge and beautiful park that houses the castle.
Al ritorno cercate invece la più vicina fermata Gray's line e da qui ritornate verso il centro storico. Il Belfast Castle è obiettivamente molto bello, complice la sua posizione privilegiata sulle pendici di Cavehill.
On the way back, look instead for the nearest Gray's line stop and from there get back to the historic center. Belfast Castle is objectively very beautiful, thanks to its prime location on the slopes of Cavehill.
Il castello è aperto (gratuitamente) al pubblico, potrete visitare il suo interno, prendere un caffè nel bar, ammirare gli oggetti di antiquariato presenti nel piccolo negozietto e visitare la tenuta dove vivono diversi animali selvatici. Oggi il Belfast Castle è un hotel ed una rinomata location per ricevimenti.
The castle is open (free of charge) to the public, and you can tour its interior, have a coffee in the café, admire the antiques in the small store, and visit the estate where several wild animals live. Today Belfast Castle is a hotel and a popular reception venue.
ALLA SCOPERTA DEI BELFAST ENTRIES
I Belfast Entries, situati nel cuore del centro storico, sono tra le vie (piccole vie) più caratteristiche di tutta Belfast. Si tratta di vicoli strettissimi, ricchi di murales (non una novità a Belfast...) e disegni, dove potrete scovare anche negozietti davvero spettacolari (in termini di location ed atmosfera), pub più o meno nascosti e scoprire una Belfast molto "locals".
DISCOVERING BELFAST ENTRIES
The Belfast Entries, located in the heart of the Old Town, are among the most characteristic streets (very small streets) in all of Belfast. These are very narrow alleys, full of murals (not a novelty in Belfast...) and drawings, where you can also unearth really spectacular little stores (in terms of location and atmosphere), more or less hidden pubs and discover a very hidden Belfast.
Da non perdere (e li troverete in sequenza) sono quelli di Pottinger's Entry, joy’s entry, Crown Entry, Wincellar Entry, uno più bello dell'altro.

Se siete alla ricerca di un bel prato dove fermarsi per qualche minuto e diventare ancor di più un "locals", il Belfast City Hall con il suo bellissimo prato all'inglese è il posto che fa per voi. Non è raro, infatti, nelle ore centrali del giorni, trovare la gente del posto che si gusta con una magnifica vista sul municipio il suo pic nic o legge un libro. Il City Hall poi è davvero molto interessante: oltre ad essere l'edificio più rappresentativo della città, la sua imponente struttura dallo stile rinascimentale in pietra bianca di Portland, rappresenta nel modo migliore il periodo d'oro di Belfast durante la Rivoluzione Industriale, un periodo di grande splendore per la città. E' possibile anche visitare il suo interno (gratuitamente), partecipando a visite guidate proposte nei seguenti giorni: dal lunedì al venerdì (ore 11, 14 e 15), il sabato e la domenica (ore 12, 14 e 15).
If you are looking for a beautiful lawn where you can stop for a few minutes and act like a local, Belfast City Hall with its beautiful English-style lawn is the place for you. In fact, it is not uncommon in the middle hours of the day to find locals enjoying, with a magnificent view of the City Hall, their picnic or reading a book. City Hall then is really very interesting: besides being the city's most representative building, its imposing structure in the Renaissance style of white Portland stone best represents Belfast's heyday during the Industrial Revolution, a period of great splendor for the city. It is also possible to visit its interior (free of charge) by participating in guided tours offered on the following days: Monday through Friday (11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.), Saturday and Sunday (noon, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.).
Da qui, risalite verso nord il centro storico e passeggiate per qualche minuto lungo Royal Avenue, la via dello shopping di Belfast, prima di raggiungere uno dei quartieri più belli della città di Belfast, il Cathedral Quarter.
From here, head north till you get to the Old Town and stroll for a few minutes along Royal Avenue, Belfast's shopping street, before reaching one of Belfast's most beautiful neighborhoods, the Cathedral Quarter.
Il quartiere, che prende il nome dalla Cattedrale di Sant'anna, ovvero il luogo di culto più importante della città, è delimitato da Donegall Street, Waring Street, Dunbar Street e York Street. Per molti anni è stato l'ex quartiere mercantile della città ed ancora oggi regala grandi magazzini costruiti in mattoni rossi, ora trasformati in gallerie d'arte e ristoranti di alto livello.
The neighborhood, named after St. Anne's Cathedral, or the city's most important place of worship, is bounded by Donegall Street, Waring Street, Dunbar Street and York Street. For many years it was the city's former mercantile district and still gives away large warehouses built of red brick, now converted into art galleries and upscale restaurants.
La zona è ovviamente "molto giovane" ed è il luogo perfetto per uscire la sera. Spingetevi sino alla St Patrick Church e poi rientrate, fermandovi nella pittoresca e coloratissima Commercial Court, con gli ombrelli colorati che finiranno nelle vostre migliori foto scattate a Belfast. Bere una guinness qui non ha davvero prezzo.
The area is very suitable for young people and is also the perfect place to spend the evening. Push on to St Patrick Church and then back in, stopping in the picturesque and colorful Commercial Court, with the colorful umbrellas that will end up in your best photos taken in Belfast. Drinking a Guinness here is truly priceless.

Come non ha prezzo visitare, a pochi passi da Commercial Court, due dei principali pub della città. il The Dirty Onion ed il vicino The Thirsty Goat Belfast, due luoghi in cui perdersi tra fiumi di birra, musica dal vivo e quell'atmosfera tipica dell'Irlanda del Nord.
BELFAST'S BEST PUBS
It's priceless even the visit, within walking distance of Commercial Court, to two of the city's premier pubs. the Dirty Onion and the nearby The Thirsty Goat Belfast, two places to get lost among rivers of beer, live music and that typical Northern Irish atmosphere.
Altri pub notevoli sono il Duke of York, The John Hewitt Bar, Kelly cellar, Bert's Jazz Bar, Filthy Mcnastyse il the Crown Saloon. E la cena? per la prima sera mi sono diretto nel vivacissimo quartiere universitario, il Queen's Quarter.

E' qui che ho scelto di cenare, puntando dritto verso il Holohan's Pantry, uno dei ristoranti più storici ed apprezzati di Belfast. E devo ammettere che non ha deluso le attese, tanto da invogliarmi a tornare anche per l'ultimo pranzo prima di lasciare Belfast.
It was here that I chose to dine, aiming straight for Holohan's Pantry, one of Belfast's most historic and popular restaurants. And I must admit that it did not disappoint expectations, so much so that I was tempted to repeat the experience just before leaving Belfast.
