Se Belfast è una delle città più affascinanti del nord Europa ed in particolare del Regno Unito uno dei motivi è sicuramente il suo passato burrascoso e gli oltre vent'anni di "troubles", la guerra che vide proprio Belfast come teatro principale degli scontri tra i repubblicani, la parte della popolazione che lottava (e ancora oggi lotta...) per un’Irlanda unita, e i lealisti, ovvero coloro che erano (e sono...) fedeli al governo inglese. Una guerra settaria che si è conclusa solamente il 10 aprile del 1998 grazie al Belfast Agreement, un accordo di pace che non ha comunque mai del tutto suturato una ferita che ancora oggi è evidentemente ancora aperta.
If Belfast is one of the most fascinating cities in northern Europe and in particular in the United Kingdom, one of the reasons is surely its stormy past and what happened during the more than two decades of “troubles,” the cruel war which saw Belfast as the main theater of clashes between the Republicans, the part of the population that fought (and still fights...) for a united Ireland, and the Loyalists, those who were (and are...) loyal to the British government. It was a sectarian war that ended only on April 10, 1998, thanks to the Belfast Agreement, a peace agreement that nevertheless never fully sutured a wound that is evidently still open today.
A testimonianza di quegli anni difficili e decisamente turbolenti rimangono stupendi murales reati da artisti locali, una sorta di "protesta collettiva" da parte di entrambe gli schieramenti coinvolti nel conflitto: i lealisti protestanti di East Belfast e quelli repubblicani di Falls Road. In mezzo la Peace Line, creata appositamente nel 1970 per separarli. Oggi visitarli è uno dei "must" quando si visita Belfast, il modo migliore per entrare davvero a contatto con la realtà della stupenda cittadina dell'Irlanda del Nord. Vengono, infatti, proposti dei Taxy-tour che porteranno il turista a visitarne i più rappresentativi, ma il modo migliore è avventurarsi per i due quartieri per respirare l'area della periferia di Belfast, quella dei Troubles.
As evidence of those difficult and decidedly turbulent years, there are still amazing murals painted by local artists, a kind of “collective protest” by both sides involved in the conflict: the Protestant loyalists of East Belfast and the Republicans of Falls Road. In the middle there was the Peace Line, specially created in 1970 to separate the two neighborhoods. Today, visiting them is a kind of must while in Belfast, the best way to really get in touch with the reality of the wonderful Northern Irish city. Taxy-tours take the tourist to all the most representative murals, but the best way is to venture through the two neighborhoods to really breathe the "Troubles" air...
Io non ho perso l'occasione, ho camminato moltissimo, ma ho cercato di vederli tutti, partendo dal quartiere ad est della città (East Belfast), il quartiere lealista, i cui murales sono decisamente provocatori e legati all'immagine militaresca. I riferimenti sono quasi sempre espliciti e legati alle battaglie o al re Guglielmo III, a dimostrazione del legame indissolubile con la corona britannica. Dopo tutto, il motto è "We will mantain our faith and our nationalty" (Conserveremo la nostra fede e la nostra nazionalità).
I did not miss the opportunity, I walked a lot, but I managed to visit them all, starting with the neighborhood to the east of the city (East Belfast), the Loyalist neighborhood, whose murals are decidedly provocative and related to the military image. The references are almost always explicit and related to battles or King William III, demonstrating the unbreakable bond with the British crown. After all, the motto is “We will maintain our faith and our nationalty.”
I MIGLIORI MURALES DI EAST BELFAST
Nell'East Belfast sono due i principali murale che mi sento di consigliarvi. Il primo è "Untold Story", situato in Canada Street, che racconta un grave incidente dell'agosto 1971 in cui l'Ira attaccò le comunità protestanti della città.
BEST MURALS IN EAST BELFAST
In East Belfast there are two main murals that I feel like recommending. The first is “Untold Story,” located on Canada Street, which depicts a serious incident in August 1971 in which IRA attacked the city's Protestant communities.
Il secondo è invece un grande simbolo non solo di East Belfast, ma di tutto il mondo protestante dell'Irlanda del Nord. Il riferimento è ovviamente al Freedom Corner (Freedom Corner, Newtownards Rd), la massima espressione lealista di Belfast. Il murales, anzi i murales, che coprono una cinquantina di metri buoni, sono un viaggio nel legame con il resto della Gran Bretagna ma non solo.
The second, on the other hand, is a great symbol not only of East Belfast, but of the entire Protestant world of Northern Ireland. I'm talking, of course, about the Freedom Corner (Freedom Corner, Newtownards Rd) Belfast's highest Loyalist expression. The mural, or rather the murals, which are very huge, are a journey into the bomd with the rest of Britain but not only.
C'è il legame delle donne con la guerra e molto altro. Il consiglio? Percorrete l'intera via del Freedom Corner (Newtownards road) a piedi fino ad arrivare al centro, ne troverete altri di murales ed uno, nascosto dietro una casa, è davvero toccante: un ricordo di quello che è stato e che, si spera, non succeda più.
There is also the connection of women to war and much more. The tip? Walk the entire Freedom Corner street (Newtownards road) till you get to the city center: there are more murals and one, hidden behind a house, is really touching: a reminder of what was and hopefully will never happen again.
UNA PAUSA TRA I MURALES - IL BELLISSIMO ST GEORGE MARKET
Per raggiungere l'ovest della città e di conseguenza continuare la visita dei murales, dovrete per forza di cose ripassare per il centro storico e, molto probabilmente, sarà ora di pranzo. Quale occasione migliore allora per visitare il bellissimo St George Market, un vecchio edificio vittoriano ora riconvertito in mecca gastronomica cittadina. Qui troverete musica dal vivo e dell'ottimo cibo nella tre giorni di apertura del mercato: il venerdì, il sabato e la domenica. Il venerdì è il giorno del Friday Variety Market, moltissime bancarelle che vendono frutta, verdura, oggetti e molto altro tra cui il pesce, freschissimo e squisito. Il sabato è invece dedicato ai sapori provenienti da tutto il mondo e sull'artigianato, mentre la domenica è infine la giornata dedicata, oltre ai prodotti locali freschi, anche e soprattutto alle arti locali. Una giornata, mettiamola così, molto irlandese...
A BREAK BETWEEN THE MURALS - THE BEAUTIFUL ST GEORGE MARKET
If you want to visit the west side of the city and consequently continue the tour of the murals, you will have to cross the old town and, most likely, it could be lunchtime. What better time then to visit the beautiful St George Market, an old Victorian building now converted into the city's food mecca. Here visitors will find live music and great food during the three opening days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday is the day of the Friday Variety Market, many stalls selling fruits, vegetables, items and much more including fish, very fresh and delicious. Saturday, on the other hand, is dedicated to flavors from all over the world and on handicrafts, while Sunday is finally the day dedicated not only to fresh local products but also and especially to local arts.
FALLS ROAD, I MURALES DI WEST BELFAST
Il Gaeltacht Quarter, nella West Belfast, è la zona dove sono concentrati buona parte dei murales repubblicani, che nel corso degli anni hanno spaziato su temi politici ma anche di attualità e, ovviamente, politica interna. Negli anni in cui la guerra era nel pieno del suo svolgimento, quest'area "operaia" era una sorta di campo di battaglia, soprattutto dopo la costruzione nel 1970 della Peace Line che divideva i due schieramenti. Una zona ad alto rischio insomma. Oggi parliamo invece del luogo per me più suggestivo della città di Belfast e Falls Road è davvero un susseguirsi di murales, uno più rappresentativo dell'altro. Il primo che incrocerete è il "Solidarity Wall" (111 Albert St), che è da sempre legato ad un tema di attualità (nel momento in cui ho visitato Belfast era dedicato alla Palestina).
FALLS ROAD, THE MURALS OF WEST BELFAST
The Gaeltacht Quarter in West Belfast is the area where most of the Republican murals are concentrated, which over the years have ranged over political themes but also current affairs and, of course, domestic politics. In the years when the war was in its heyday, this “working-class” area was a kind of battleground, especially after the construction in 1970 of the Peace Line dividing the two sides. A high risk area in short. Today we are talking instead about the most striking place, at least for me, in the city of Belfast, and Falls Road is really a succession of murals, one more representative than the other. The first one you will cross is the “Solidarity Wall,” (111 Albert St), has always been related to a topical issue (at the time I visited Belfast it was dedicated to Palestine).
Poco distante dal Solidarity Wall incrocerete il murales più fotogratato (e più famoso) di tutta Belfast, il Bobby Sands Murals (49 Falls Rd), che raffigura proprio Bobby Sands, volontario dell’IRA, che morì nel carcere di Long Kesh dopo uno sciopero della fame durato addirittura 66 giorni, una dura forma di protesta contro il regime carcerario imposto ai detenuti repubblicani.
Not far from the Solidarity Wall, you will cross the most photographed (and most famous) mural in all of Belfast, the Bobby Sands Murals (49 Falls Rd), which depicts the very Bobby Sands, an IRA volunteer who died in Long Kesh Prison after a hunger strike that lasted as long as 66 days, a harsh form of protest against the prison regime imposed on Republican prisoners.
Percorrendo la via potrete visitare anche altri famosi murales, tra cui quello di Gaelic Sports Mural (Brighton Street), l'Easter Rising Memorial (4 Beechmount Avenue) ed il James Connolly Mural (376 Falls Rd).
As you walk down the street you can also visit other famous murals, including the Gaelic Sports Mural ( 4 Beechmount Avenue), the Easter Rising Memorial (4 Beechmount Avenue) and the James Connolly Mural (376 Falls Rd).
Il percorso dei murales non poteva poi non concludersi con quello di George Best, il figlio prediletto di Belfast, il più grande giocatore britannico della storia. Esatto, quello di "Pelè good, Maradona better, George... Best" (9-1 Blythe St).
The murals trip then could not but end with that of George Best, Belfast's favorite son, the greatest British player in history. That's right, because “Pele good, Maradona better, George ... Best. (9-1 Blythe St)”.
COSA VEDERE NEL QUEEN QUARTER, IL QUARTIERE UNIVERSITARIO
Prima di concludere la due giorni di Belfast, manca ancora un quartiere tra i più vivi ed amati dagli abitanti di Belfast, il Queen Quarter, il quartiere universitario della città, che prende il suo nome dalla enorme e bellissima Queen's University Belfast. Ho adorato visitare il campus, come camminare per le sue vie ricche di locali e ristoranti, tra i migliori della città. Nel quartiere spicca il giardino botanico adiacente all'Ulster Museum, il museo più importante dell’Irlanda del Nord, che vanta diverse collezioni che spaziano sul passato, vicino e lontano, del paese. Oltre al museo ed al giardino botanico, da non perdere è il parco, che soprattutto nei mesi caldi richiama tantissimi locali.
WHAT TO SEE IN THE QUEEN QUARTER, THE UNIVERSITY DISTRICT
Before finishing the two-day Belfast trip, there is still one more neighborhood left to visit, which is among the most vibrant and beloved by Belfast residents, the Queen Quarter, the city's university district, named after the huge and beautiful Queen's University Belfast. I loved visiting the campusa and walking through its streets full of clubs and restaurants, some of the best in the city. Prominent in the neighborhood is the botanical garden adjacent to the Ulster Museum, Northern Ireland's premier museum, which boasts several collections spanning the country's past, near and far. In addition to the museum and botanical garden, not to be missed is the park, which especially in the warmer months attracts many locals.
Se vi avanza tempo, potrete inserire nella vostra visita alla città di Belfast sia Stormont, l'ex residenza del Parlamento dell'Irlanda del Nord (situato in cima ad una collina ad East Belfast), che Crumlin Road Gaol, una prigione chiusa nel 1996 dopo 150 anni di servizio, e diventata ora un luogo del tutto particolare. Non è, infatti, solamente un penitenziario visitabile (troverete la stanza delle esecuzioni e molto altro), ma una sorta di luogo di ritrovo. Al suo interno, infatti, sono stati creati un bar ed un ristorante e non è raro assistere anche a concerti. La prigione è stata inoltre dichiarata uno dei luoghi più infestati di Belfast...
Time permitting, do not miss both Stormont, the former residence of the Northern Ireland Parliament (located atop a hill in East Belfast), and Crumlin Road Gaol, a prison closed in 1996 after 150 years of service, and now become a very special place. It is, in fact, not only a visitable penitentiary (you will find the execution room and much more), but a kind of gathering place. In fact, a bar and a restaurant have been created inside, and it is not uncommon to attend concerts as well. The prison has also been declared one of the most haunted places in Belfast....
