La prima intensa giornata a spasso per Tolosa ha fatto sì che molti dei gioiellini della città siano stati, almeno in parte, visitati. Ma la "città rosa" ha davvero tanto ancora da offrire, dai quartieri più centrali a quelli periferici, da quelli più amati dai "locals" a quelli più turistici. Ed è proprio da qui che comincia la nuova giornata, dalla parte meridionale del centro storico, dove sono alla caccia di un murales molto famoso, anzi diciamo il più famoso dell'intera Tolosa. Già, perche Tolosa non sarà Belfast, la città che ho visitato poco prima della capitale dell'Occitania (https://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.com/2024/05/two-days-in-belfast-what-to-see-and-do.html) in quanto a quantità di murales, ma la street art ha comunque il suo fascino. Una delle opere più famose è quella realizzata da Miss Van nell’ambito del festival della cultura urbana Rose Béton ed intitolato La sinfonia dei Sogni.
The first busy day walking around Toulouse meant that many of the city's gems were, at least in part, visited. But the "pink city" really has so much more to offer, from the most central neighborhoods to the suburbs, from those most beloved by locals to the most touristy ones. And this is where the new day begins, from the southern part of the old town, where I am on the hunt for a very famous mural: let's say the most famous in the whole of Toulouse. Yes, because Toulouse may not be Belfast, the city I visited just before the capital of Occitane (https://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.com/2024/05/two-days-in-belfast-what-to-see-and-do.html) in terms of the amount of murals, but street art still has its charm. One of the most famous works is the one created by Miss Van as part of the Rose Béton urban culture festival and entitled The Symphony of Dreams.
Questo affresco sensuale e poetico, situato di fronte a una scuola (a proposito, ho amato i cartelli a forma di matita che segnalano la presenza di un istituto scolastico), rappresenta una donna circondata da maschere ispirate alle diverse culture del mondo.
This sensual and poetic fresco, located in front of a school (by the way, I loved the pencil signs signaling the presence of an educational institution), depicts a woman surrounded by masks inspired by different world cultures.
La prossima fermata è il simbolo religioso della città, la Cattedrale St Etienne de Toulouse, la cui costruzione cominciò nel XIII secolo e continuò per cinque anni. La sua caratteristica principale è che, nonostante i tanti anni spesi per edificarla, ancora oggi l'edificio religioso è incompiuto. Un'altra caratteristica è la sua ecletticità che combina ben due stili gotici, il massiccio meridionale ed il gotico settentrionale. All'interno, l'altare in marmo è costruito in stile barocco, assieme alle vetrate, tra le quali spicca quella del "Re di Francia", che raffigura il Re Carlo VII e il delfino, futuro Luigi XI.
Next stop is the religious symbol of the city, the St Etienne de Toulouse Cathedral, whose construction began in the 13th century and continued for five years. Its main feature is that, despite the many years spent to build it, even today the religious building is unfinished. Another feature is its eclecticism combining no less than two Gothic styles, the massive southern and northern Gothic. Inside, the marble altar is built in the Baroque style, along with the stained glass windows, among which there is the "King of France," depicting King Charles VII and the dauphin, future Louis XI.
Siamo nel cuore del centro storico di Tolosa, che nella prima giornata abbiamo un po' sacrificato per concentrarci maggiormente sui quartieri periferici della città. Uno dei principali luoghi di ritrovo, ma anche uno dei più affascinanti di tutta Tolosa, è il quartiere quartiere Des Carmes con il suo mercato al coperto con vista sulle bellissime case colorate di questa zona. Noterete tanti locali anche al suo esterno e tanti tavolini all'aperto: qui quando il clima lo permette, si respira la vera aria frizzante e giovanile di Tolosa.
This is the heart of Toulouse's historic center, which has been sacrficed a bit on the first day to focus more on the city's suburbs. One of the main places, but also one of the most charming in all of Toulouse is the Des Carmes neighborhood with its indoor market overlooking the beautiful colorful houses in this area. You will also notice many bars outside and many outdoor tables: here, when the weather permits, you can breathe the true crisp and youthful air of Toulouse.
Non lontano dal mercato, spicca l'Hotel d'Assezat, edificio diventato col tempo vero emblema del Rinascimento francese. Un tempo casa privata di un famoso commerciante di nome Pierre D'Assézat (che commissionò questo progetto), ora è parte della Fondazione Bemberg che l'ha reso uno dei musei più interessanti di Tolosa. Si tratta, infatti, di una sorta di percorso sull'arte occidentale, dal Medioevo al XX secolo, suddiviso in tre piani ricchi di quadri, oggetti ed importantissime opere.
Not far from the market, stands the Hotel d'Assezat, a building that has become over time a true emblem of the French Renaissance. Once the private home of a famous merchant named Pierre D'Assézat (who commissioned this project), it is now part of the Bemberg Foundation, which has made it one of the most interesting museums in Toulouse. It is, in fact, a kind of itinerary on Western art, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, divided into three floors full of paintings, objects and very important works.
Lasciato il cuore del centro storico, è tempo di avvicinarsi alla Garonna, che già ieri avevamo ammirato durante il tramonto. Siamo nuovamente, infatti, in Place de la Dourade, ma questa volta per visitarla, non per i suoi colori. Il simbolo della piazza è sicuramente la bellissima Eglise Notre Dame De La Daurade, monumento Storico francese sin dal 1963. La chiesa ospita la Vergine Nera, la protettrice delle future mamme.
Leaving the heart of the historic center, it is time to approach the Garonne, which we had already admired yesterday during sunset. I am again, in fact, within Place de la Dourade, but this time i'm not here for its colors. The symbol of the square is definitely the beautiful Eglise Notre Dame De La Daurade, a French Historical Monument since 1963. The church houses the Black Virgin, the patroness of mothers-to-be.
Da qui, il mio consiglio è di proseguire verso nord, percorrendo parte del Promenade Henri Martin (il lungo fiume Garonna) sino a raggiungere un altro canale, non altrettanto famoso come il Canal-du-Midì, ma sicuramente più tranquillo nonostante sia immerso nel centro città, il Canal de Brienne.
From here, my advice is to continue north along part of the Promenade Henri Martin (close to the Garonne River) until you'll see another canal, not as famous as the Canal-du-Midì, but certainly quieter despite being immersed in the city center, the Canal de Brienne.
Capirete che l'avrete raggiunto perchè l'accesso al canale è situato poco dopo piazza Saint Pierre, con il bellissimo Pont Sant Pierre, costruito nel 1987, che grazie al suo impianto d'illuminazione è uno dei ponti più amati dagli abitanti di Tolosa. Place Saint Pierre è invece ricca di locali e ristoranti che restano aperti fino a notte inoltrata, rendendola una delle preferite dai giovani.
You'll know you've reached it, because the access to the canal is located shortly after Place Saint Pierre, with the beautiful Pont Sant Pierre, built in 1987, which, thanks to its lighting system, is one of the most beloved bridges for Toulouse residents. Place Saint Pierre, on the other hand, is full of bars and restaurants that are open late into the night, making Place St Pierre a favorite among young people.
La passeggiata lungo il piccolo Canal de Brienne vi condurrà invece sino all'incrocio con il più grande Canal du Midì. Io ne ho percorso solamente un pezzo, prima di tornare sui miei passi e quindi verso Place Saint Pierre per poi attraversare il Pont San Pierre e raggiungere il mio quartiere preferito di Tolosa, St Cyprien, sicuramente tra i più autentici. Qui troverete soprattutto la gente del posto, che non mancano di affollare i tanti spazi verdi, i locali ed anche il piccolo mercato al coperto. A livello turistico da non perdere ci sono i parchi Prairie des Filtres e Jardin Raymond VI ed il già citato Marché Saint-Cyprien, ricco di specialità locali.
Instead, the walk along the small Canal de Brienne leads all the way to the intersection with the larger Canal du Midì. I only walked part of it, before retracing my steps and then towards Place Saint Pierre and then crossing the Pont Saint Pierre to reach my favorite neighborhood in Toulouse, St Cyprien, surely among the most authentic. Here you will find mostly locals, who do not fail to flock to the many green spaces, restaurants and even the small indoor market. On a tourist level, do not miss the Prairie des Filtres and Jardin Raymond VI parks and the aforementioned Marché Saint-Cyprien, full of local specialties.
La sua attrazione principale è tuttavia lo Chateaux d'Eau, l'ex torre dell'acqua, che oggi ospita numerose mostre di fotografia. Arrivando da nord percorrerete la Promenade du Dr Charles Rose sino a raggiungere il museo d'arte moderna Les Abbattoirs con i suoi giardini. Scendendo ancora di più arriverete nel cuore del quartiere, rappresentato da Rue de la Republique che poi diventa Etienne Billières, dove attendervi ci sarà il mercato St Cyprien. E' l'ultimo luogo che ho scelto di visitare nella due giorni spesa a Tolosa. Da qui, una manciata di metri vi riporteranno verso il Ponte Nuovo e quindi verso il centro cittadino, da dove, se avrete più tempo a disposizione, potrete anche raggiungere con la metro o con il tram un paio di luoghi davvero da non perdere se si visita Tolosa. Il primo è la "Città dello Spazio" (Cité de l'Espace), un parco scientifico e di divertimento a temo nella città dove si producono gli Airbus, gli aerei più usati in Europa. Il secondo è Hall de la Machine, un luogo quasi surreale amato soprattutto da chi è un fanatico degli effetti speciali. In questo hangar, difatti, sono troverete gigantesche macchine con l'aspetto di alcuni animali, che vengono utilizzate in numerosi spettacoli di tutto il mondo.
However, its main attraction is the Chateaux d'Eau, the former water tower, which now hosts numerous photography exhibitions. Coming from the north, you will walk along the Promenade du Dr Charles Rose until you reach the Les Abbattoirs, a modern art museum with its gardens. Descending further, visitors will notice the heart of the district, represented by Rue de la Republique, which then becomes Etienne Billières, where the St Cyprien market is located. It is the last place I chose to visit in the two days spent in Toulouse. From here, the Pont Neuf will take you back to the city center where, if you have more time, you can board the subway or the tram and get to couple of places that are really not to be missed while visiting Toulouse. The first is the "Space City" (Cité de l'Espace), a science and entertainment park themed in the city where Airbus, the most widely used aircraft in Europe, is manufactured. The second is Hall de la Machine, an almost surreal place loved especially by those who are special effects fanatics. In this hangar, in fact, you will find gigantic machines with the appearance of some animals, which are used in numerous shows around the world.
