Tolosa potrebbe anche non essere la prima città a cui si pensa quando si visita la Francia, eppure la calda e coinvolgente capitale dell'Occitania è una città molto interessante, capace di unire la sua ricca anima storica con il suo essere decisamente giovanile e molto rilassata. I Pirenei e la Spagna non sono poi così lontani e l'influenza spagnola un pochino si sente in una città dove si mescolano chiese e monumenti architettonici di stampo gotico e romanico e la modernità dei luoghi dedicati all'aeronautica ed alla cultura spaziale. Non è un caso che molti francesi sognano, da sempre, di trasferirsi e vivere proprio qui, attratti anche dai colori che Tolosa assume al crepuscolo, quel rosastro che caratterizza il suo fiume principale, la Garonna, e gli edifici circostanti. E poi il cibo, il foie gras e il mitico Cassoulet, risalente addirittura al Medioevo, ovvero uno stufato sostanzioso preparato con fagioli, carne di maiale e di oca. Se cercate una città che coniughi la sua anima universitaria con storia, gastonomia, sport ed aeronautica e ricerca spaziale, questa è proprio Tolosa...
Toulouse may not even be the first city that comes to mind when visiting France, yet the warm and engaging capital of Occitanie is a very interesting city, capable of combining its rich historical soul with its decidedly youthful and very laid-back nature. The Pyrenees and Spain are not that far away, and the Spanish influence can be felt in a city where Gothic and Romanesque churches and architectural monuments mix with the modernity of places dedicated to aeronautics and space culture. It is no coincidence that many French people have always dreamed of moving and living right here, attracted also by the colors that Toulouse takes on at dusk, that pinkish hue that characterizes its main river, the Garonne, and the surrounding buildings. And then the food, foie gras and the legendary Cassoulet, dating back as far as the Middle Ages, which is a hearty stew made with beans, pork and goose. If you are looking for a city that combines its university soul with history, gastonomy, sports and aeronautics and space research, this is definitely Toulouse...

COME RAGGIUNGERE TOLOSA DALL'AEROPORTO
Esistono diverse possibilità per raggiungere il centro di Tolosa provenendo dall'aeroporto di Tolosa Blagnac. Nel momento in cui scrivo (primavera 2024) sono in corso dei miglioramenti sulla linea del tram, ma è l'opzione che mi sento comunque di consigliare se volete risparmiare. Appena fuori dall'aeroporto, infatti, potrete salire sul bus che in una quindicina di minuti vi condurrà alla fermata del tram (T2). Da qui sarà molto facile raggiungere il centro storico. L'opzione più veloce, ma più costosa, è quella della navetta aeroportuale che collega l’aeroporto con la stazione di Tolosa Matabiau. I collegamenti partono ogni 16 minuti nei giorni feriali e 20 minuti nei fine settimana e durante le vacanze scolastiche. Il tempo di percorrenza varia da 20 a 45 minuti a seconda del traffico. HOW TO GET TO TOULOUSE FROM THE AIRPORT
There are several options for getting to downtown Toulouse coming from Toulouse Blagnac Airport. At the time of writing (spring 2024) improvements are being made on the streetcar line, but it is the option I would still recommend if you want to save money. Just outside the airport, in fact, you can board the bus that will take you to the streetcar stop (T2) in about fifteen minutes. From here it will be very easy to get to the historic center. The faster but more expensive option is the airport shuttle that connects the airport with Toulouse Matabiau station. Shuttles leave every 16 minutes on weekdays and 20 minutes on weekends and school vacations. Travel time varies from 20 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. IL DAY 1 - LA CROCIERA SUL CANAL-DU-MIDI
Approfittando della crociera sul Canal-Du-Midi in programma per la tarda mattinata, la visita di Tolosa comincia da sud-est, con un breve passaggio dal Palazzo di Giustizia sino a raggiungere i Jardin Des Plantes. Questo giardino pubblico è uno dei tanti polmoni verdi di Tolosa, capace di ospitare oltre un centinaio di di specie botaniche che sono, di fatto, il motivo principale per cui il parco fu creato, ovvero permettere agli studenti di medicina di avere a disposizione piante medicinali. Con il tempo le cose sono un po' cambiate ed ora troverete tanti locali a passeggio per questo giardino, che grazie a diversi ponti pedonali è collegato ad altri giardini come il Grand Rond ed i Giardini Reali. Se siete alla ricerca di una pausa relax e soprattutto se viaggiate con bambini, questo è il posto che fa per voi anche grazie ai diversi punti ristoro ed alle tante giostrine adatte ai più piccoli.
DAY 1 - THE CRUISE ON THE CANAL-DU-MIDI
Taking advantage of the cruise on the Canal-Du-Midi scheduled for the late morning, the tour of Toulouse begins from the southeast, with a short passage from the Palace of Justice until reaching the Jardin Des Plantes. This public garden is one of Toulouse's many green lungs, capable of housing more than a hundred botanical species that are, in fact, the main reason the park was created, which was to allow medical students to have medicinal plants at their disposal. Over time things have changed a bit and now you will find many locals strolling around this garden, which thanks to several pedestrian bridges is connected to other gardens such as the Grand Rond and the Royal Gardens. If you are looking for a relaxing break and especially if you are traveling with children, this is the place for you, thanks to the various refreshment spots and the many rides suitable for the little ones.

Il Jardin de Plantes non è molto distante dal Canal-Du-Midi e dal punto di partenza delle imbarcazioni che consentono di effettuare di una gita di poco più di un'ora lungo il fiore all'occhiello della città di Tolosa. Ma, prima di raccontare nel dettaglio l'esperienza lungo il canale, bisogna fare un passo in dietro e spiegare meglio perchè il "Canale dei due Mari" sia così tanto apprezzato dai francesi e non solo. Già, perchè il Canal-Du-Midi è l'unico canale che con i suoi 240 km di navigazione collega l'Oceano Atlantico on il Mediterraneo, attraversando città come Bordeaux e Tolosa ormai dal lontano 1681. Che scegliate di effettuare una gita in barca, di noleggiare una bici e costeggiare le sue sponde o semplicemente di camminare per qualche chilometro, l'esperienza lungo il canale è una delle cose da fare quando si visita Tolosa.

But, before detailing the experience along the canal, ineed to take a step back and explain why the Canal-Du-Midi is so popular with the French and beyond. That's right, because the Canal-Du-Midi is the only canal that, with its 240 km of navigation, connects the Atlantic Ocean on the Mediterranean, passing through cities such as Bordeaux and Toulouse since 1681. Whether you choose to take a boat trip, rent a bike and ride along its banks or simply walk a few kilometers, the experience along the canal is one of the things to do when visiting Toulouse.

Patrimonio dell'Unesco dal 1996, il Canal-du-Midi fu voluto da Luigi XIV che lo descrisse come "opera di pace, capace di perpetuare la memoria del suo autore nei secoli a venire". Quando fu costruito, infatti, il Canal du Midi fu considerato il più grande progetto idraulico della sua epoca, e ancor oggi viene visto come una grande realizzazione ingegneristica, anche grazie alle 63 chiuse, progettate per superare i dislivelli lungo il percorso. Le Bateaux Toulousains è una delle principali compagnie che offre brevi escursioni lungo il canale (1h15 minuti oppure 1h.30 minuti). Sul sito ufficiale (

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, the Canal-du-Midi was commissioned by Louis XIV, who described it as a "work of peace, capable of perpetuating the memory of its author for centuries to come." When it was built, in fact, the Canal du Midi was considered the greatest hydraulic project of its time, and even today it is considered as a great engineering achievement, thanks in part to the 63 locks, designed to overcome the unevenness along the route. Le Bateaux Toulousains is one of the leading companies offering short excursions along the canal (1h15 minutes or 1h.30 minutes). On the official website (https://www.bateaux-toulousains.com/en/sightseeing-cruises) you can choose between different tours offered by the company: from March to June, the 3 Locks Cruise, an excursion offered from Monday to Friday (10:30 am and 2:30 pm) that starts from Port St. Sauveur and ends in Port de L'Embouchure, and the Riquet Cruise, offered instead on Saturdays and Sundays. The latter starts and ends from Port Sant Sauveur.
Da luglio a ottobre diventano invece tre le proposte de Le Bateaux Toulousains: la prima è la Night Cruise (40 minuti, solo nei mesi di luglio ed agosto) lungo il fiume Garonna (port de la Dourade), la seconda è la "60 minute Cruise" che consente al pubblico di ammirare sia la Garonna che il Canal-Du-Midi ed infine la "30 minute cruise" lungo la Garonna. Il prezzo varia dagli 8 ai 14 euro. L'unica nota stonata, ma è una consuetudine in Francia ed in particolare a Tolosa, è che diventa quasi obbligatorio conoscere la lingua francese per capire quello che si sta vedendo. E' successo nel boat tour, ma la medesima situazione si è verificata anche in altri musei.
Jowever, from July to October Le Bateaux Toulousains offer three kind of tours: the first is the Night Cruise (40 minutes, July and August only) along the Garonne River (port de la Dourade), the second is the "60 minute Cruise" that allows visitors to admire both the Garonne and the Canal-Du-Midi, and finally the "30 minute cruise" along the Garonne. The price ranges from 8 to 14 euros. The only jarring note, but it is a custom in France and particularly in Toulouse, is that it becomes almost mandatory to know the French language to understand what you are seeing. E' ora di pranzo, ma ho scelto di snobbare il mercato al coperto Marché Victor Hugo, 4000 metri quadri di prodotti tipici della gastronomia locale e ristoranti, come succede sempre più spesso in questi mercati, ahimè non proprio economicissimi. Per questo ho preferito pranzare da Hao Zai, una piacevolissima scoperta non lontana dal Canal du Midi. Hao Zai è un piccolo locale che offre un'autentica e molto interessante cucina vietnamita e le recensioni sui vari motori di ricerca non fanno altro che confermare la bontà della scelta che mi sento di consigliare.
It's lunchtime, but I chose to snub the Marché Victor Hugo indoor market, 4,000 square meters of typical local gastronomic products and restaurants. The reason? As it often happens in these markets, price are too high. That is why I preferred to have lunch at Hao Zai, a very pleasant discovery not far from the Canal du Midi. Hao Zai is a small place that offers authentic and very interesting Vietnamese cuisine, and the reviews on the various search engines only confirm the goodness of the choice, which I would recommend.

Il mio programma tra la "cose da vedere in due giorni a Tolosa" prevedeva altro ma, come si sa, spesso i piani cambiano in corsa e, approfittando della vicinanza con il ristorante vietnamita, ho scelto di proseguire visitando i quartieri periferici del centro storico di Tolosa, partendo dal quartiere di St Aubin, dove la domenica mattina si svolge il mercato dell'artigianato e dove artisti, artigiani e commercianti vivono in simbiosi. Dopo tutto, in quest'area incastonata tra il centro ed il Canal-Du-Midi, si respira un'aria diversa: non è un caso, infatti, che il quartiere sia soprannominato la Montmartre di Tolosa poichè la sua arteria principale, Rue de la Colombette, possiede lo status di libero comune sin dalla fine della seconda guerra mondiale.
My schedule among the "things to see and do in two days in Toulouse" included something else but, as we know, plans often change in a hurry and, taking advantage of the proximity to the Vietnamese restaurant, I chose to continue by visiting the peripheral neighborhoods of Toulouse's historic center, starting with the St Aubin district, where the craft market takes place on Sunday mornings and where artists, artisans and merchants live in symbiosis. After all, in this area nestled between the center and the Canal-Du-Midi, one breathes a different air: it is no coincidence, in fact, that the neighborhood is nicknamed the Montmartre of Toulouse since its main artery, Rue de la Colombette, has held the status of a free commune since the end of World War II.
Sto risalendo verso nord, anzi nord est, fiancheggiando il centro storico. E a proposito di quartieri a ridosso del centro, da non perdere è anche Les Chalets, uno dei preferito dai "locals". Qui il tempo scorre più lento e non c'è la frenesia del centro storico, qui ci si gusta un caffè sulla terrazza del Cafè de la Concorde, uno dei più antichi di Tolosa, ed addentrandosi nelle sue vie si resta ammaliati dalle Toulousaines, le case bianche tipiche dell'Occitania.
I'm heading up northeast, flanking the historic city cente. And speaking of neighborhoods close to the city center, also not to be missed is Les Chalets, a favorite of the locals. Here time passes slowly and there is not the hustle and bustle of the old town, here you may enjoy a coffee on the terrace of the Café de la Concorde, one of the oldest in Toulouse, and as you venture in its streets you are bewitched by the Toulousaines, the white houses typical of Occitanie.

Se state seguendo il mio percorso, vi sarete ritrovati sulle sponde nord del Canal-Du-Midì: costeggiatelo sino a raggiungere i bellissimi Jardin Japonais Pierre Baudis, risalenti al periodo che va dal 1400 al 1600. Il suo design è decisamente esotico, un'oasi di relax per chi ama la meditazione e ovviamente i ritmi decisamente orientali. Al suo interno troverete il giardino zen, un muro di cinta, ponti, lanterne ed anche un gazebo per il tè.
If you are following my route, you are probably along the north banks of the Canal-Du-Midi: walk along it until you reach the beautiful Jardin Japonais Pierre Baudis, dating from the period between 1400 and 1600. Its design is decidedly exotic, an oasis of relaxation for those who enjoy meditation and, of course, decidedly oriental rhythms. Do not miss the Zen garden, a boundary wall, bridges, lanterns and even a tea gazebo.

Lasciati i Jardin Japonais, è tempo di cominciare a respirare l'aria del centro storico di Tolosa. Partendo dalla Basilica di Sant Sernin, che non potrà lasciarvi indifferenti. Dedicata a San Saturnino, primo vescovo e martire di Tolosa, il suo percorso di costruzione fu molto lungo e controverso e, dopo molti interventi, regala un alternarsi di pietre e mattoni rosa, sia nel suo interno composto da cinque navate ed un transetto a tre navate, che al suo esterno.
Leaving the Jardin Japonais, it is time to start breathing the air of Toulouse's historic center. Starting with the Basilica of Sant Sernin, which cannot leave you indifferent. Dedicated to St. Saturnin, the first bishop and martyr of Toulouse, its path of construction was very long and controversial and, after many interventions, it gives an alternation of stones and pink bricks, both in its interior composed of five naves and a transept with three aisles, and in its exterior.

Adiacente alla Basilica di Sant Sernin non mancate di passeggiare lungo Rue du Taur, una piccola ma caratteristica via che vi porterà nel cuore del centro storico dove, prima di concludere la giornata, ci sono ancora due luoghi da non mancare.

Il primo è la Galleria Lafayette, per un momento dedicato allo shopping (non perdetevi in cima la terrazza panoramica da cui si gode della miglior vista su Tolosa) e soprattutto Place du Capitole e il Capitole, l'autentico cuore pulsante di Tolosa.
The first one is the Galerie Lafayette, for shopping lovers (don't miss at the top the panoramic terrace from which there is the best view of Toulouse) and especially Place du Capitole and the Capitole, the authentic beating heart of Toulouse.

E' l'anima del centro storico, dove a dominare è il Capitole, il Campidoglio, un monumento davvero incredibile, la cui facciata è caratterizzata da otto grandi colonne rosa, conosciuto nel mondo come un capolavoro assoluto dell'arte neoclassica del XVII secolo. Oggi è diventato sede del Municipio e del Teatro du Capitole. Al centro della piazza, ricca di ristoranti e di cafè, non perdetevi la Croce d'Occitania.
It is the soul of the old town, where the Capitole stands: it's a truly amazing monument whose façade features eight large pink columns, known throughout the world as an absolute masterpiece of 17th-century neoclassical art. Today it has become home to City Hall and the Theatre du Capitole. In the center of the square, full of restaurants and cafes, don't miss the Cross of Occitanie.
Ma il momento più bello della giornata, quando si visita Tolosa, è sicuramente il tramonto. Quando sta per calare il sole, li locali (tantissimi) si riversano sulle sponde della Garonna per ammirare, nelle belle giornate, lo spettacolo del cielo che si tinge di rosso e le luci dei ponti e delle città che lentamente si accendono, creando "quell'effetto rosa" che caratterizza Tolosa durante questo periodo della giornata.
But the perfect time of the day when visiting Toulouse is definitely sunset. When the sun is about to go down, locals (lots of locals!) flock to the banks of the Garonne to admire, on sunny days, the show of the sky turning red and the lights of the bridges and towns slowly coming on, creating "that pink effect" that characterizes Toulouse during this time of day.
Il posto perfetto per ammirare il tramonto è Le Quai de la Daurade: non c'è luogo migliore in città dove sentirsi dei veri "locals".

E per cena? Beh, devo ammettere che non me la son sentita di assaggiare il mitico Cassoluet (troppo pesante!), ma non mi è andata affatto male. Ho deciso di percorrere il Pont Neuf e di fermarmi nel quartiere Saint Cyprien, di cui parlerò approfonditamente nel secondo post. Qui spicca uno dei ristoranti migliori di Tolosa, Pepite, che offre un menù non esageratamente lungo (e scritto su una lavagnetta che viene portata al tavolo) ma di indubbia qualità. Ed a prezzi non esagerati. Consigliatissimo!
What about dinner? Well, I have to admit that I didn't feel like tasting the legendary Cassoluet (heavy food!), but that was not bad at all. I decided to walk along the Pont Neuf and stop in the Saint Cyprien neighborhood, of which I will talk about in the second post. In this neighborhood, do not miss one of the best restaurants in Toulouse, Pepite, which offers a high quality menu that is not exaggeratedly long (and written on a blackboard that is brought to the table). And fairly priced. Highly recommended!
