Se c'è un luogo in Francia a cui non sappiamo resistere è la Provenza, un luogo davvero magico in tutte le stagioni ma in particolar modo in estate, quando i suoi colori (viola, verde, giallo e rosso su tutti) si mescolano ai profumi della natura incantevole e delle piccole cittadine che sembrano uscite da un libro di fiabe. E' la Provenza della lavanda, la grande regina del territorio nei mesi di giugno e luglio, ma anche delle montagne e degli spettacoli naturali offerti dal Sentiero delle Ocre e dal Colorado Provencal dove vi sembrerà per un attimo di essere nell'ovest statunitense. Ci vorrebbero almeno due settimane per visitarla in lungo e in largo, e non è un'esagerazione. Già, perchè in due week end (distanti quasi dieci anni uno dall'altro) non siamo riusciti a visitarla interamente ma, mettendo insieme il meglio dei due viaggi siamo sicuri che trovereste gli spunti giusti (e soprattutto l'entusiasmo), per iniziare a pianificare un viaggio nella terra della Lavanda. E allora vi rimandiamo al primo viaggio, ormai una vita fa (in tutti i sensi...), per scoprire cosa vedre in Provenza (DUE CUORI PER VIAGGIARE: PROVENCE), ma restate qui se invece siete alla ricerca di un itinerario di tre giorni alla scoperta del meglio della Provenza. Anzi, due giorni e mezzo, dove come sempre sarete un po' di corsa, ma riuscirete a visitare i luoghi imperdibili di questo territorio, dai campi di lavanda alle piccole comunità, da Avignone all'Abbazia di Senanque, dal Colorado Provencal al Sentiero dell'Ocra.
If there is one place in France that we cannot resist, well... it is definitely Provence, a truly magical place in all seasons but especially in summer, when its colors (purple, green, yellow and red above all) mingle with the scents of enchanting nature and small towns that seem to come straight out of a storybook. This is the Provence of lavender, the queen of the area in June and July, but also of the mountains and natural spectacles offered by the Ochre Trail and the Colorado Provencal where visitors feel like they are in the american soouthwest. It would take at least two weeks to visit Provence extensively, and that is not an exaggeration. That's right, because in two weekends (almost ten years apart) we didn't manage to visit it entirely but, putting together the best of the two trips we are sure you would find the right cues (and especially the enthusiasm), to start planning a trip to the Land of Lavender. And so we refer you back to the first trip, now a lifetime ago (in every way!)), to find out what to see in Provence (DUE CUORI PER VIAGGIARE: PROVENCE), but stay here if instead you are looking for a three-day itinerary to discover the best of Provence. Indeed, two and a half days, where as always we had to rush, but we managed to visit the must-see places in this area, from lavender fields to small communities, from Avignon to Senanque Abbey, from Colorado Provencal to the Ochre Trail.

Cosa vedere in Provenza in tre giorni? Non è una domanda a cui è così facile rispondere, perchè la Provenza-Alpi Costa Azzurra è una regione parecchio grande nel sud della Francia, affacciata sul mar mediterraneo, e delimitata a ovest dal fiume Rodano e ad est dal confine italiano, il grande motivo per cui ogni anno è visitata da migliaia e migliaia di italiani. Come noi che, partendo il giovedi nel tardo pomeriggio da Milano, abbiamo scelto di pernottare proprio al confine (a Sestriere), garantendoci così due giorni pieni di visita della Provenza (venerdì e sabato) e metà della terza giornata (domenica), prima di fare ritorno in Italia. Dormendo ovviamente sempre in luoghi diversi, l'unico modo possibile per poter visitare se non tutto, il più possibile, della regione più colorata della Francia.

What to see in Provence in three days? This is not such an easy question to answer, because Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur is a rather large region in the south of France, ovrlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and bordered on the west by the Rhone River and on the east by the Italian border, the big reason why it is visited by thousands and thousands of Italians every year. Just like us who, leaving on Thursday in the late afternoon from Milan, chose to stay overnight right at the border (in Sestriere), which helped us to have two full days of visiting Provence (Friday and Saturday) and half of the third day (Sunday) before returning to Italy. Spending the nights always in different places, the only possible way to visit as much as possible of the most colorful region of France.

UNA SORPRESA SUL FIUME DURANCE, LE CASCATE PIETRIFICATE
Per raggiungere il cuore della Provenza, dal confine di stato italiano, occorrono circa tre ore di auto. Ma non disperatevi, sono luoghi affascinanti e vi verrà voglia di fermarvi ad ogni angolo ed ad ogni piccolo paese che incontrerete. Il confine è segnato dal Monginevro, che tra un tornante e l'altro vi porterà... in Francia. E poi troverte Briancon, particolarmente conosciuta grazie alla città fortificata di Vauban, dichiarata Patrimonio dell’Umanità dall’UNESCO e poi ancora Gap, che con i suoi 735 metri di altitudine, è la città di Gap è la più alta prefettura di Francia. A farvi compagnia (come in altri momenti del viaggio in Provenza) ci sarà il bellissimo fiume Durance e, come spesso accade dove c'è acqua, ci sono anche tante bellezza naturali.
A SURPRISE ON THE DURANCE RIVER, THE PETRIFIED WATERFALLS
It takes about three hours by car to reach the heart of Provence from the Italian state border. But don't despair, these are fascinating places and you will want to stop at every corner and every small town you encounter. The border is marked by Montgenèvre, which between one hairpin bend and another will take you to... France. And then there is Briancon, particularly well known thanks to the fortified town of Vauban, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and then again Gap, which, at 735 meters above sea level, is the highest prefecture in France. Keeping you company (as in other parts of the Provence trip) will be the beautiful Durance River and, as is often happens where there is water, be ready to admire natural beauties!

Come le Fontaine Pétrifiante De Réotier, che pensavamo fossero una semplice fermata per sgranchirci le gambe in attesa di entrare nel clou della Provenza e che invece si sono rivelate essere un autentica sorpresa nonostante siano decisamente poco pubblicizzate. Siamo a Réotier, poco lontano dalla N94 che stiamo ormai percorrendo dal confine italiano e che percorreremo ancora per un lungo tratto. Un ampio parcheggio e poi una passeggiata di un paio di minuti ci porterà a... Yellowstone! No, stiamo scherzando, però le Fontaine Pétrifiante De Réotier davvero assomigliano alle Mammoth Hot Springs del più bello e famoso tra i parchi nazionali americani.Queste cascate pietrificate che tanto assomigliano ad un drago (o ad un mostro) si trovano sulla "Grande Faglia della Durance", una frattura che i geologi ritengono possa estendersi per diversi chilometri sotto il livello del suolo, raccogliere l'acqua ricca di sali minerali che, una volta scesa in profondità, emerge poi come geyser.
Such as the Fontaine Pétrifiante De Réotier, which we thought they were a simple stop to stretch our legs while waiting to approach the best of Provence and that instead turned out to be a genuine surprise despite being decidedly unadvertised. We are in Réotier, not far from the N94, which we've traveled from the Italian border and which we will be traveling for a long stretch more. There's a large parking lot and then a walk of a couple of minutes that takes us to.... Yellowstone! No, we're kidding, but the Fontaine Pétrifiante De Réotier really do resemble the Mammoth Hot Springs of the most beautiful and famous of American national parks.These petrified waterfalls that look so much like a dragon (or a monster) are located on the "Great Durance Fault," a fracture that geologists believe may extend several kilometers below ground level, collecting water rich in mineral salts that, once it descends to the depths, then emerges as geysers.

Nell'agosto del 1889, durante i lavori di costruzione della ferrovia, furono rinvenute nei pressi della fontana ben 300 monete romane in argento o bronzo, risalenti dal regno di Augusto a quello di Costanzo II. È stata ritrovata anche “una piccola gamba di bronzo romana”, tutti doni dei viaggiatori che percorrevano la "Strada Romana" e che si fermavano proprio nelle vicinanze per la presenza di un santuario.
In August 1889, during railroad construction work, as many as 300 Roman coins in silver or bronze, dating from the reign of Augustus to that of Constantius II, were found near the fountain. Also found was “a small roman bronze leg”, all gifts from travelers who traveled along the “Roman Road” and stopped just nearby due to the presence of a sanctuary.
FERRASSIERES E SAULT, IL PRIMO APPROCCIO CON LA LAVANDA
Circa 140 km (lungo strate parecchio tortuose) separano le cascate pietrificate con i primi campi di lavanda, quelli di Ferrassieres e di Sault. Siamo ai piedi del Mont Ventoux, il "Grande Calvo", che nella precedente spedizione avevamo scalato rendendo omaggio alla montagna più famosa di Francia. Il primo approccio con la lavanda l'avrete al
Champ de lavande Mauve, mentre attraverserete montagne dai nomi che intimoriscono, come il Col de l'Homme Mort. Ma non fatevi spaventare, i panorami ripagheranno della fatica e di qualche manovra per far passare le vetture presenti nell'altra carreggiata.
FERRASSIERES AND SAULT, THE FIRST APPROACH TO LAVENDER
About 140 km (along quite winding stratas) separate the petrified waterfalls with the first lavender fields, those of Ferrassieres and Sault. We are at the foot of Mont Ventoux, the "Great Bald," the mountain we climbed during the previous trip to Provence. It's just one of the most famous french mountain. The first approach to lavender is at the Champ de lavande Mauve, while crossing mountains with intimidating names, such as the Col de l'Homme Mort (mountain of the dead man). But don't let that scare you, the views will repay the effort and some maneuvering to pass cars on the other roadway.

A Férrassieres dirigetevi verso la chiesetta, lasciate qui l'auto e a piedi percorrete la via "Le Village": comincia qui il "sentiero della Lavanda" o "Lavender Botanic Trail", una sorta di introduzione a quello che troverete in questi tre giorni all'insegna del colore viola.
In Férrassieres, head to the little church, leave your car right there and walk down “Le Village” street: this is where the “Lavender Trail” or “Lavender Botanic Trail” begins, a sort of introduction to what you will find during these three purple days.

Potrete percorrerne un piccolo tratto o addentrarvi nei campi coltivati, prima di raggiungere la cittadina principale dell'area, Sault, distante circa 5 km da Férrassieres, in mezzo a campi di grano, farro e lavanda. Qui si produce miele, amaretti, formaggi caprini, piante aromatiche, lavanda ovviamente ma troverete anhe dell'ottimo maiale e dell'agnello. Ma la grande specialità è il torrone (nougat), realizzato con ingredienti locali come il miele di lavanda, bianchi d’uova e mandorle. Non a caso Sault è considerato da sempre il "Villaggio più profumato della Provenza".
You can walk a small section of the trail or venture into the cultivated fields before reaching the main town in the area, Sault, about 5 km from Férrassieres, amid fields of wheat, spelt and lavender. Honey, amaretti, goat cheeses, aromatic plants and lavender are produced here, but you will also find excellent pork and lamb. However the great specialty is the nougat, made with local ingredients such as lavender honey, egg whites and almonds. It is no coincidence that Sault has always been considered the “Most Fragrant Village in Provence.”

ORANGE, IL SEGRETO MEGLIO CUSTODITO DELLA PROVENZA
Se Fèrrassieres e Sault le avevamo già visitate durante la prima esperienza in Provenza, non eravamo invece mai stati nella splendida Orange, che possiamo tranquillamente definire il più bello tra i villaggi dell'intera Provenza. Siamo solamente a mezz'ora a nord di Avignone e ad un'oretta abbondante a ovest di Sault, lontani però dagli itinerari più turistici e dai campi di lavanda: da Orange non ci si passa, ci si viene di proposito e sono sempre di più i turisti che accorrono per visitare i suoi due monumenti patrimonio Unesco (il Teatro Antico e l'Arco di Trionfo) ed il suo caratteristico centro storico, caratterizzato da un ricco patrimonio sia romano che medievale.
ORANGE, THE BEST-KEPT SECRET IN PROVENCE
While we had already visited Fèrrassieres and Sault during our first experience in Provence, we had never been to the beautiful Orange, which we can easily define the most beautiful village in all of Provence. Orange is located just half an hour north of Avignon and a good hour or so west of Sault, far from the more touristy routes and lavender fields. Tourists does not pass through Orange, they come there on purpose, bu there are more and more people flock to visit its two UNESCO World Heritage monuments (the Ancient Theater and the Arc de Triomphe) and its quaint old town, characterized by a rich heritage, both Roman and medieval.

Sono tante le cose da vedere a Orange, una cittadina che sin da subito ci ha colpito moltissimo. Lasciate la vostra auto nel parcheggio adiacente l'Arco di Trionfo (Av de l’Arc De Triomphe) e cominciate da qui il tour a piedi che vi consentirà di visitare tutte le bellezze di Orange, partendo proprio dall'Arco di trionfo, risalente al I secolo dopo cristo e considerato un incredibile monumento dell'arte romana provenzale. Solitamente, questo tipo di costruzione ricorda e celebra il ritorno trionfante di un generale e del suo esercito, ma la storia dell'Arco di Trionfo di Orange è ben diversa: non evoca, infatti, un particolare evento ma simboleggia la supremazia di Roma in mare come in terra.
There are so many things to see in Orange, a town that from the very beginning impressed us greatly. Leave your car in the parking lot adjacent to the Arc de Triomphe (Av de l'Arc De Triomphe) and start from here the walking tour that takes you close to all the beauties of Orange, starting right from the Arc de Triomphe, dating back to the 1st century AD and considered an incredible monument of Provençal Roman art. Usually, this type of construction commemorates and celebrates the triumphant return of a general and his army, but the story of the Triumphal Arch of Orange is quite different: in fact, it does not evoke a particular event but symbolizes the supremacy of Rome at sea as well as on land.

La seconda grande attrazione di Orange è il Teatro Romano (biglietto d'ingresso: 11.50 euro, aggiornato al 2025), anch'esso monumento del I secolo d.c. e classificato come patrimonio mondiale Unesco perchè unico al mondo a conservare il muro di scena originario. Luogo principale della vita della città, già all’epoca della costruzione divenne immediatamente famoso per la perfetta acustica e la struttura dell’edificio, che poteva accogliete più di 9.000 spettatori. Per anni fu sostanzialmente dimenticato e poi portato a nuova vita nel diciannovesimo secolo, diventando casa di tantissimi eventi di caratura internazionale.
Orange's second major attraction is the Roman Theater (entrance fee: 11.50 euros, updated to 2025), also a first-century A.D. monument and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it is the only one in the world to preserve the original stage wall. Being the main place of city life, even at the time of its construction it immediately became famous for the perfect acoustics and structure of the building, which could accommodate more than 9,000 spectators. For years it was basically forgotten and then brought back to life in the 19th century, becoming home to many events of international stature.
Cosa vedere ad Orange oltre all'Arco di Trionfo ed al Teatro Romano? Se avete più tempo da spendere per le vie di Orange, vi consigliamo vi fare tappa in altri tre luoghi iconici della città: il municipio, la chiesa di Sant Florent e la Cattedrale. Il municipio (Pl. Goerges Clemenceau) è situato in una dimora seicentesca che vanta anche un bel campanile, la chiesa di San Florent (Rue Saint-Florent) è la chiesa conventuale dei Cordeliers (francescani), mentre la Cattedrale di Orange, consacrata il 26 ottobre 1208 a nostra Signora di Nazareth, è il principale luogo di culto di Orange.

Avignone è la Provenza, con il suo cielo sempre limpido, vicoli e piazzette e quel romanticismo tipico che pervade questa regione della Francia. Ma, se le altre sono piccole cittadine, Avignone è la "grande città della Provenza", conosciuta in tutto il mondo per essere stata in passato "la città dei Papi". What to see in Orange besides the Arc de Triomphe and the Roman Theater? If you have more time to spend on the streets of Orange, we recommend three other iconic sites in the city: the City Hall, Sant Florent Church, and the Cathedral. The City Hall (Pl. Goerges Clemenceau) is housed in a 17th-century mansion that also boasts a beautiful bell tower, St. Florent's Church (Rue Saint-Florent) is the convent church of the Cordeliers (Franciscans), and the Orange Cathedral, consecrated on Oct. 26, 1208 to Our Lady of Nazareth, is Orange's main place of worship.
AVIGNON, THE ART OF LIVING IN PROVENCE
Avignon is just... Provence, with its ever-clear skies, narrow streets and small squares and that typical romanticism that pervades this region of France. But while the others are small towns, Avignon is the "great city of Provence," known throughout the world for having once been "the city of the Popes." In the capital of Provence you will find everything, from history to good food, from art to culture, from a picturesque medieval appearance to the religious charm of a city that has hosted as many as nine popes, each of whom was able to expand and embellish the immense papal palace, now the symbol of all Avignon.

Cosa vedere ad Avignone? Un tour a piedi della città dei Papi non può prescindere dall'immenso Palazzo dei Papi. Ma, prima di iniziare il percorso, vi consigliamo di lasciare la vostra vettura nel parcheggio situato dalla parte opposta del Rodano (1 All. Antoine Pinay) e poi percorrere a piedi il ponte Eduard Daladier, la porta d'ingresso alla città storica di Avignone. Ah, in questo parcheggio, non solo godrete di una bellissima vista sulla città, ma potrete anche scattare la famosa foto alla scritta "Avignon" con... Avignone sullo sfondo!
What to see in Avignon? A walking tour of the City of the Popes cannot prescind from the immense Palace of the Popes. But, before starting the tour, we recommend that you leave your car in the parking lot located on the opposite side of the Rhone (1 All. Antoine Pinay) and then walk across the Eduard Daladier Bridge, the gateway to the historic city of Avignon. Well, if you park your car in this parking lot, you will get a beautiful view of the city, but also take the famous photo of the “Avignon” sign with... Avignon in the background!
Il Palazzo dei Papi, il più grande edificio gotico d'Europa, è davvero imponente e domina l'intero centro storico di Avignone. Le sue dimensioni rivelano sostanzialmente quella che era la sua vera natura, ovvero l'essere una fortezza inespugnabile per i papi che si rifugiarono qui scappando dalle tensioni di Roma. Il palazzo si compone di due edifici adiacenti, per un totale di 25 stanze adibite a scopi differenti e una serie di cortili, chiostri, sale di ricevimento e cappelle. Adiacente al Palazzo dei Papi troverete la Cattedrale Notre Dame Des Doms, tipico esempio architettura romanica provenzale. Sulla sommità della basilica svetta una statua raffigurante la Madonna, che con una mano benedice Avignone e con l’altra la protegge: con i suoi 6 metri di altezza veglia sulla città dal 1859.
The Palace of the Popes, the largest Gothic building in Europe, is truly imposing and dominates the entire historic center of Avignon. Its size basically reveals what its true nature was, namely, to be an impregnable fortress for the popes who took refuge here fleeing the tensions of Rome. The palace consists of two adjacent buildings with a total of 25 rooms used for different purposes and a series of courtyards, cloisters, reception rooms and chapels. Adjacent to the Palace of the Popes you will find the Notre Dame Des Doms Cathedral, a typical example of Provençal Romanesque architecture. At the top of the basilica stands astatue depicting the Virgin Mary, who blesses Avignon with one hand and protects it with the other: at 6 meters high, she has been watching over the city since 1859.
Lasciata la cattedrale, e prima di avventurarvi nella vera e propria anima storica di Avignone, visitate i Giardini del Rocher des Doms, un'osasi di pace e tranquillità nel cuore della città. Non distanti dal Palazzo dei Papi (ma situati su una collina), offrono una vista davvero speciale sulla città, sul fiume Rodano e su tutta la vallata circostante. Proprio sotto di esso non potrete non notare il "mitico" Ponte di Avignone (sì, quello della canzone...), la cui storia è del tutto particolare. Il ponte Saint-Bénezet collegava, infatti, Avignone con la vicina Villeneuve, superando il fiume Rodano e per l’epoca si trattava certamente di un capolavoro di ingegneria: grazie ai suoi 900 metri di lunghezza e 22 arcate, il ponte ha per anni sfidato la forza del fiume, fino alla piena del 1668, dalla quale rimasero in piedi solamente quattro arcate. Da quel giorno la struttura è rimasta monca...
Leaving the cathedral, and before venturing into the real historic soul of Avignon, don't miss the Rocher des Doms Gardens, a haven of peace and tranquility in the heart of the city. Not far from the Palace of the Popes (but located on a hill), this park gives a very special view of the city, the Rhone River and the entire surrounding valley. Located just below it, you cannot fail to notice the “mythical” Avignon Bridge (yes, the one in the famous song...), whose history is quite special. The Saint-Bénezet Bridge used to connect, in fact, Avignon with neighboring Villeneuve, crossing the Rhone River: at that time, it was certainly a masterpiece of engineering. Thanks to its 900 meters in length and 22 arches, the bridge was able to withstand the force of the river for years, until the flood of 1668, from which only four arches remained standing. Since that day, the structure has remained stumped...

L'ultimo stop del tour a piedi di Avignone è la Piazza dell'Orologio, vero cuore pulsante della città. Questa trafficatissima piazza prende il suo nome dall'orologio posizionato in cima al Municipio e vanta diversi ristoranti, un carosello e la bellissima Opera. Dove cenare ad Avignone? The last stop on the Avignon walking tour is the Place de l'Horloge, the real beating heart of the city. This busy square gets its name from the clock located atop the City Hall and boasts several restaurants, a carousel, and the beautiful Opera House. Where to dine in Avignon?
