Amsterdam è una città magica. Ma c'è un periodo dell'anno, la primavera, in cui la capitale olandese si colora e diventa ancora più bella. E no, non stiamo parlando del Koningsdag o Giorno del Rem la festa nazionale nel Regno dei Paesi Bassi che viene celebrato il 27 aprile, o il giorno precedente se il 27 cade di domenica, ovvero la data in cui è nato Willem-Alexander. Seppur questa giornata sia davvero imperdibile, il periodo del quale stiamo parlando è decisamente più lungo, sostanzialmente dal 20 di marzo sino ai primi giorni di maggio. E' in questi quasi due mesi che Amsterdam dà il meglio di sè, in cui i colori diventano davvero magici grazie al fiore simbolo di tutta l'Olanda, i mitici tulipani. E c'è un luogo, non lontano dalla capitale, dove proprio in questo periodo potrete visitare il parco di tulipani più famoso al mondo, il Keukenhof: un enorme giardino botanico considerato uno dei luoghi più fotografati di tutto il nord dell'Europa, dove ogni anno fioriscono ben sette milioni di bulbi piantati a mano all'interno dei suoi 32 ettari. Il parco, che nacque nel 1949, ospita ben 4 milioni e mezzo di tulipani, 2500 alberi di 87 specie diverse, un lago, canali e vasche d'acqua con fontane, un mulino a vento e numerose sculture che lo rendono in questo ambito il parco più ricco del paese. Although this day is truly unmissable, the period we’re talking about is much longer, essentially from March 20 through the first days of May. Pur essendo una delle attrazioni più famose della città di Amsterdam, organizzare la visita al Keukenhof (https://keukenhof.nl/en/) non è così semplice. In primis perchè il parco è aperto sostanzialmente due mesi all'anno ed è decisamente gettonato, e poi perchè... non si trova ad Amsterdam, ma nella città di Lisse, situata 35 km a sud ovest della capitale. La prima raccomandazione è quella di muoversi per tempo con l'acquisto dei biglietti perchè vanno davvero a ruba (dovrete selezionare il giorno della visita), e decidere come raggiungere il parco. Se non state guidando la vostra auto, esistono due opzioni per organizzare la spedizione da Amsterdam verso la piccola Lisse, dove sorge il parco. La più gettonata è sicuramente quella di acquistare un biglietto cumulativo che includa anche il trasporto, scegliendo la location di partenza (da Amsterdam) in base alle vostre esigenze.

AMSTERDAM'S MOST BEAUTIFUL PARK
Although it is one of Amsterdam’s most famous attractions, planning a visit to Keukenhof (https://keukenhof.nl/en/) isn’t that simple. First of all, because the park is essentially open only two months a year and is extremely popular, and second, because… it isn’t located in Amsterdam, but in the town of Lisse, located 35 km southwest of the capital. The first recommendation is to move in advance and get your tickets very early because they really sell out fast (you’ll need to select your visit date), and decide how to get to the park. If you’re not driving your own car, there are two options for getting from Amsterdam to the small town of Lisse, where the park is located. The most popular option is definitely to buy a combined ticket that includes transportation, choosing your departure location (from Amsterdam) based on your needs.

Il costo del biglietto cumulativo è di 38.50 euro (con partenza da Amsterdam Rai, durata del viaggio 40 minuti circa), di 33.50 per tutte le altre stazioni. Se invece deciderete come noi di muovervi in autonomia (noi abbiamo utilizzato prima il treno e poi il bus), il prezzo d'ingresso per visitare il Keukenhof è di 21 euro (aggiornato al 2026). Il secondo consiglio è quello di visitare il parco al mattino, possibilmente a ridosso dell'apertura (ore 8), per evitare la calca di turisti e godervi al meglio un luogo davvero splendido.
You can choose between Amsterdam Rai, Hoofdorp, Leiden, and Harlem. The cost of the combined ticket is 38.50 euros (departing from Amsterdam Rai, with a travel time of approximately 40 minutes) and 33.50 euros for all other stations. If, like us, you decide to get around on your own (we took the train first and then the bus), the admission price to visit Keukenhof is 21 euros (as of 2026). The second tip is to visit the park in the morning, preferably closer to the park's opening (8 a.m.), to avoid the crowds of tourists and fully enjoy this truly beautiful place.

Potrete camminare ed ammirare i bellisismi tulipani, potrete salire a bordo della Whisper Boat (11 euro), godendovi la pace e la tranquillità del tipico paesaggio olandese nei dintorni di Keukenhof a bordo di un'imbarcazione elettrica, noleggiare una bici (12.50 euro per 3 ore) ed esplorare il parco pedalando, partecipare a tour guidati o ancora visitare il mulino a vento risalente al 1892. E c'è posto anche per l'arte, grazie ai 25 artisti che collaborano con Keukenhof e rendono il parco un luogo imperdibile tra le cose da vedere ad Amsterdam in 4 giorni.
Inside Keukenhof, where we recommend spending the entire morning, there’s no shortage of attractions. You can stroll around and admire the beautiful tulips, hop aboard the Whisper Boat (11 euros) to enjoy the peace and quiet of the typical Dutch countryside surrounding Keukenhof on an electric boat, rent a bike (€12.50 for 3 hours) and explore the park by cycling, join guided tours, or visit the windmill dating back to 1892. Tornati in città e prima di dedicare il pomeriggio alla visita dei principali musei di Amsterdam, e pranzate al ristorante più piccolo al mondo. Già, parliamo del Pancakehouse Upstairs, una locanda specializzata in pancake davvero unica nel suo genere. Prenotate anche qui per tempo, salite le ripide scale e troverete un ristorantito davvero piccolo ma decisamente suggestivo, che rappresenta un must tra le cose da fare ad Amsterdam in quattro giorni. E, già che vi trovate da queste parti, esplorare un paio di quartieri che non siete ancora riusciti a visitare, entrambi raggiungibili a piedi. Iniziamo con Rembrandtplein, dedicata al celebre pittore olandese del Secolo d’Oro, una vivacissima piazza circondata da bellissimi edifici storici e dominata da un’imponente statua in bronzo raffigurante proprio Rembrandt.
Once you’re back in the city, and before spending the afternoon visiting Amsterdam’s main museums, grab lunch at the world’s smallest restaurant. That’s right, we’re talking about Pancakehouse Upstairs, a truly one-of-a-kind pancake house. Be sure to book ahead, climb the steep stairs, and you’ll find a tiny but decidedly charming little restaurant—a must-do on your four-day itinerary in Amsterdam. And, since you’re in the area, explore a couple of neighborhoods you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, both within walking distance. Let’s start with Rembrandtplein, named after the famous Dutch painter of the Golden Age, a lively square surrounded by beautiful historic buildings and dominated by an imposing bronze statue of Rembrandt himself.
Non lontano troverete anche il ponte decisamente più particolare di Amsterdam, ovvero il Magere Brug, conosciuto anche come "Skinny Bridge" per via delle sue dimensioni ridotte. Il ponte, che attraversa il fiume Amstel, è famoso non solo per il suo design accattivante e la struttura basculante doppia, ma anche e soprattutto per il fatto che, ogni venti minuti, i suoi due lati si sollevano per far passare le imbarcazioni più alte. Ora è tutto automatizzato, ma sino al 1994 il sollevamento dei bracci era manuale ed affidato a due guardiani. E poi c'è Spiegel, un quartiere dedicato agli appassionati di arte e di antiquariato (sono oltre 80 i negozi), che ruota intorno alla sua via principale, Nieuwe Spiegelstr.
Not far away, you’ll also find Amsterdam’s most distinctive bridge, the Magere Brug, also known as the “Skinny Bridge” due to its small size. The bridge, which spans the Amstel River, is famous not only for its striking design and double bascule structure, but also, and above al, for the fact that, every twenty minutes, its two sections lift to allow taller boats to pass through. The process is now fully automated, but until 1994, raising the arms was manually done by two bridge keepers. And then there’s Spiegel, a neighborhood dedicated to art and antiques enthusiasts (with over 80 shops), centered around its main street, Nieuwe Spiegelstraat.

Sono 4 i musei presenti nel Museumkwartier: Il principale e sicuramente più famoso è il Van Gogh Museum, che vanta una mostra permanente su tre livelli del grande pittore olandese ed altre esposizioni temporanee, il Rijksmuseum, il più grande museo di storia olandese ed è famoso per la collezione di dipinti del Secolo D'oro, lo Stedelijk Museum ovvero il museo di arte moderna e contemporanea di Amsterdam ed infine il Il MOCO, il museo di arte contemporanea che ospita una permanente su Banksy. Il consiglio è, come sempre, quello di muoversi per tempo nell'acquisto dei biglietti.

From the Spiegel neighborhood, it takes just a short walk to reach the Museumkwartier, Amsterdam’s renowned cultural hub and the heart of the city’s art scene, offering an in-depth journey into the Golden Age of Flemish art. Within the Museum Quarter lies the Museumplein (Museum Square), a large park-like square filled with fountains, sculptures, and plenty of greenery, and of course surrounded by several museums that are among the must-see attractions during a four-day stay in Amsterdam. There are four museums in the Museum Quarter: The main and undoubtedly most famous is the Van Gogh Museum, which features a permanent exhibition spanning three floors dedicated to the great Dutch painter, along with other temporary exhibitions; the Rijksmuseum, the largest museum of Dutch history and famous for its collection of Golden Age paintings; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam’s museum of modern and contemporary art; and finally the MOCO, the museum of contemporary art that houses a permanent exhibition on Banksy. As always, the advice is to purchase tickets well in advance.
Noi abbiamo speso l'intero pomeriggio visitando tre dei quattro musei (abbiamo escluso, per questioni di tempo, il Rijksmuseum) e dobbiamo ammettere che sono uno più bello dell'altro. We spent the entire afternoon visiting three of the four museums (we skipped the Rijksmuseum due to time constraints) and we have to admit that each one is better than the other. Starting with the best-known, the iconic Van Gogh Museum, a true sanctuary dedicated to the life and works of Vincent van Gogh, one of the most influential artists of all time.

La collezione presente nel museo include sia dipinti che disegni, ma anche bellissime lettere scritte da Van Gogh stesso al fratello Theo e ad altri amici e familiari, oltre ovviamente ad a oggetti personali che raccontano nel profondo uno dei pittori più ammirati al mondo. All'interno dei tre piani del museo troverete alcune delle sue opere più famose, come ad esempio “I Girasoli”, “La Camera di Van Gogh ad Arles” e “Notte Stellata”. Il museo è aperto tutti i giorni ma gli orari variano a seconda del periodo dell'anno.
The museum’s collection includes both paintings and drawings, as well as beautiful letters written by Van Gogh himself to his brother Theo and other friends and family members, not to mention personal items that offer a deep insight into one of the world’s most admired painters. Spread across the museum’s three floors, you’ll find some of his most famous works, such as “Sunflowers,” “Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles,” and “Starry Night.” The museum is open daily, though hours vary depending on the time of year.

Next to the Van Gogh Museum, you’ll find the equally stunning Moco Museum. The museum is located inside Villa Alsberg, an elegant building designed by Eduard Cuypers, cousin of the more famous Pierre, who designed the nearby Rijksmuseum and Central Station.

During our visit (2026), we thoroughly enjoyed the temporary exhibition dedicated to Robbie Williams, which focused on raising awareness about mental health.
